LSO ST LUKE’S: GET INSPIRED
SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY SINCE 1733 Our gleaming white spire is one of Old Street’s most iconic landmarks. Rising 200 feet into the sky, the unique obelisk structure, designed by famous Baroque architect Nicholas Hawksmoor in 1733, once attracted local people to church. Now a state-of-the-art music venue, LSO St Luke’s is serving the local community in a different way, its bold tower a call to all to come and join in with inspirational music-making.
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE In 2003, the London Symphony Orchestra, based up the road at the Barbican Centre, decided to transform a ruined church into a totally one-off music venue for everyone to enjoy, with the help of corporate partners UBS. Created primarily as a home for LSO Discovery, the LSO’s education and community projects, as well as for the Orchestra themselves to rehearse in, the venue also hosts hundreds of concerts every year, exploring other genres alongside classical like folk and jazz. Read on to find out how you can witness these events; or better yet, come and make some music yourself.
WHAT’S ON? Page 3 – Inside Out The great British summer is coming, and so long as the sun stays shining that means it’s time for another series of free lunchtime concerts on the grass outside of LSO St Luke’s. Page 4 – Get involved Ever tried a Gamelan? Or are you a budding digital composer at secondary school or college? Whether you have prior music knowledge or not, our workshop leaders will make sure you enjoy yourself. Page 5 – Get singing No instruments needed here, just your voice! Singing is said to be incredibly good for the soul and is also something everyone can join in with. If you’re a more experienced singer, why not try an LSO Choral Singing Day? Page 6 – Events for everyone Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke’s offer the chance to hear small-scale classical music performed in a stunning venue by LSO and Guildhall School musicians. Introduced with insightful facts, they also offer a chance for you to ask any burning questions. Everything you need to know about tickets and where we are is on pages 7 & 8.
