LSO Season 2015/16 Spring Concert Guide
SPRING 2016
London’s Symphony Orchestra
The LSO is the capital’s oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world’s finest, with over a century of history behind it and one hundred musicians forming its membership. Each year the LSO joins forces with the world’s leading conductors and soloists to perform 70 concerts at the Barbican Centre. In the new year, Sir Simon Rattle – the Orchestra’s Music Director Designate – returns for three concerts, including a bold new staging of Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande, Shakespeare 400 explores the legacy of the literary icon in a series of events at the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s, and LSO Futures throws open the door to the music of 2016. Beyond our home in the City of London, the LSO performs a further 70 concerts all over the world. Recent tours have taken the Orchestra to all the major European cities and further-flung destinations including the US, Australia, Singapore, India, China and Japan. The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall, too. LSO Discovery, our education and community programme, which

And you can hear the Orchestra on over a hundred (and counting!) releases on our own label, LSO Live, and on iconic soundtracks for numerous films (including 2015 hit Suffragette, four of the Harry Potter films and the six original Star Wars movies).

WELCOME / SIMON RATTLE ~ LSO.CO.UK
‘There’s an extraordinary quality of freshness, which is very unusual, with an amazing ability to just turn on the moment … so you feel the LSO can go anywhere with you.’ Sir Simon Rattle, LSO Music Director Designate
Simon Rattle Sir Simon Rattle takes you on a journey through the French musical imagination – from Debussy to Dutilleux – in his first series of 2016. First stop, the mythical kingdom of Allemonde, where two lovers become united by fate and then torn apart by envy. In Pelléas et Mélisande, Debussy’s only opera, no one ever quite says what they mean. But lurking beneath the text lie the hidden truths revealed gradually through the atmospheric music that is this composer’s hallmark and that makes this work a masterpiece. So join us for the operatic event of the year: for two nights only, Pelléas et Mélisande brought to life in the Barbican Hall by Sir Simon Rattle, visionary director Peter Sellars, an all-star cast and the London Symphony Orchestra. Then celebrate the centenary of musical luminary Henri Dutilleux, with two of his exquisite scores nestled between works by Ravel and Delage. Expect clarity, colour, consummate craftsmanship and a little je ne sais

Spirit of Today
‘Full of beautifully crafted, endlessly varied sounds and creative extravagance … the performances, led by François-Xavier Roth, were a marvel.’ Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, on LSO Futures in 2013
March 2016 sees the return of LSO Futures, a week of concerts, workshops and a conference spearheaded by conductor François-Xavier Roth, exploring the diversity of contemporary music and featuring the first performances of no fewer than ten works. A pair of concerts under the incisive direction of François-Xavier Roth, who has played a pivotal role in the LSO’s Panufnik Composers Scheme since its creation ten years ago, form the centrepiece of the series, each presenting a world premiere by LSO composer scheme alumni. Dr Glaser’s Experiment, by Darren Bloom, brings together a chamber orchestra, live video and immersive light-design to place the audience in the middle of the performance, while Elizabeth Ogonek’s Sleep & Unremembrance is a hyperactive ten-minute romp for full symphony orchestra. Book-ending LSO Futures are two concerts conducted by leading British composer Thomas Adès, showcasing his own mesmerising works alongside scores that inspired their creation by Brahms, Sibelius and Franck. Meanwhile in January, Roth sets the scene for LSO Futures with After Romanticism, a curated series that traces a journey through music composed on the cusp of modernity, with revolutionary scores by Webern, Berg, Mahler and Strauss.
