Music Tech Fest is a celebration of ideas – a fun, welcoming and improvisational gathering of all sectors of the extended music tech community. Founded by music technology innovator Michela Magas in 2012 as a way to bring together academics, music industry, artists, hackers, inventors and music startups, the Festival has become a global phenomenon, with events taking place in New York, Paris, Berlin, Boston and Wellington, New Zealand in 2014 – and ten more festivals around the world planned for 2015. The London Music Tech Fest runs from 5 to 7 September at LSO St Luke’s on Silicon Roundabout – the London Symphony Orchestra’s own research and development venue and home of LSO Discovery, bringing the best in music technology to the heart of the capital. The Festival’s aim is to share with you fantastic collaborations, experiments, performance, showcases, demonstrations and ideas over the course of the weekend – with special guests, live cinema, a music hackathon like no other – and a gathering of some of the world’s finest minds, fresh from inventing the very future of music itself. Last autumn, the uK witnessed its first ever Family Arts Festival. From music and theatre to circus, art and dance, this nationwide comingtogether of arts and cultural organisations was designed to put families centre stage. Now we’re looking forward to doing it all over again! Taking place from 17 October to 2 November 2014, and encompassing half term, the LSO’s contributions to the Festival include Story-Telling for Under-5s (24 October), two 45-minute Free Lunchtime Concerts performed by vocalists from the Guildhall School (17 and 31 October), and a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert of string quintets by beethoven and bruch (30 October), the perfect school holiday activity to inspire budding young string players. LSO in Wartime: Create an Opera in a Day (1 November) invites all generations to discover what happened to the London Symphony Orchestra and its musicians between 1914 and 1918 in a series of immersive workshops. Outside the Festival, there’s a recital from the LSO French horn section (5 September) and why not bring your children to see the talented 8- to 17-year-olds from Junior Trinity in their end-of-term showcase? Bigger does not always have to mean better, but adding extra instruments to a string quartet can certainly make things sound richer. For the composer it presents not only both new technical challenges but also new expressive opportunities, so it is not surprising that some of the greatest names in music history have been drawn to writing for string quintet and sextet. In these four concerts, one of this country’s most distinguished chamber ensembles, the world-renowned Nash Ensemble, have chosen from among the very best of these supercharged works to offer a series of deluxe delights by composers ranging from Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky to Dvorˇák, Bruckner and Borodin. World War I changed the face of Britain, and indeed the world, with over nine million casualties and a generation of young men wiped out. One hundred years on we commemorate and remember the sacrifice and hardships faced by those men so that we might have a future. In 1917, only 13 years into its life (it was formed in 1904), the London Symphony Orchestra faced a crisis: with nearly half its members called up for military service and the fear of Zeppelin attacks keeping people away from concerts, the LSO’s Board made the tough decision to suspend concert-giving until the end of the war. A weekend of events at LSO St Luke’s delves into the effects that war can have on culture – both a hundred years ago and in current theatres of war. Bring your children to find out about what happened here in London in 1914–18 and compose your own opera; attend a study day exploring the connection between conflict, the brain and music; round it off with the premiere of a new work by Sally Beamish with the LSO at the Barbican, which draws on the tragedy of shell shock and war-induced posttraumatic stress, and uses the voices of patients and doctors in poetry by Sir Andrew Motion. lso.co.uk/firstworldwar

Junior Trinity 1pm Concert

LSO Sing, the London Symphony Orchestra’s singing programme devised by Choral Director Simon Halsey, is gathering pace, and with six Singing Sundays concerts, five Singing Days you can take part in, and new conductors for the community choirs getting into their stride, singing continues to grow and grow at the LSO. The 120-strong London Symphony Chorus gave a UK tour in May, performing Rachmaninov ‘Vespers’ in Cardiff, Basingstoke and at the Newbury Festival; and will sing the Vespers again in their own a cappella concert at the Barbican on 26 November, along with Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year. They also give a world premiere, Equal Voices by Sally Beamish, and sing choral masterworks conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Donald Runnicles, Daniel Harding and Bernard Haitink. There has never been a better time to join the Chorus in the run-up to its 50th anniversary year in 2016. Visit lsc.org.uk to find out more. For the LSO’s community choirs, last season was especially exciting due to the arrival of new Conductor David Lawrence and Associate Conductor Lucy Griffiths. David conducts the 80-strong LSO Community Choir and 40-strong Senior Youth Choir, and Lucy the 70-strong Junior Youth Choir, all of whom live, work or go to school within 15 minutes of LSO St Luke’s. David has vast experience of conducting choirs, including the annual Young Voices concerts at the O2 incorporating more than 8,000 singers, and the national youth choirs of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as conducting Songs of Praise for BBC One and The People’s Chorus for BBC Four. At LSO St Luke’s this term the Community Choir’s 24 November concert is oratorio highlights, linked to the 22 November Singing Day focusing on Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri. Over at the Barbican on 14 December all the choirs take part in the Christmas Choral Celebrations, and work begins on the UK premiere of Jonathan Dove’s new community opera, The Monster in the Maze, to end the season on 5 July 2015 with Sir Simon Rattle. It should be quite a year.

LSO ST LUKE’S CafÉ LSO St Luke’s runs its own in-house Bar and Café service. Our Bar and Café Manager Stuart Connery and his team look forward to welcoming you. A selection of hot and cold drinks including a well-stocked bar, sandwiches, snacks, cakes and pastries are available for the majority of public events, opening one hour before concerts begin and during the interval (unless otherwise advertised).
