RUSSIAN PIANO WORKS BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

For the final series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts in the 2013/14 season, LSO St Luke’s will host four leading Russian pianists, who each give us a taste of their own venerable national tradition. These four sparkling recitals take in a selection of the greatest Russian Romantic piano works, from Mussorgsky’s evocative Pictures at an Exhibition – his most celebrated work for the piano – to lesser-known but equally imaginative pieces by Taneyev and Blumenfeld.

Along with music by Russian masters Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, there is a particular focus on sonatas by Scriabin, running in tandem with Valery Gergiev’s series of the composer’s complete symphonic works with the LSO at the Barbican. The selection of pieces charts a journey through Scriabin’s musical life, from early Romantic lyricism to the intense, mysterious chromaticism of his later works.

We conclude this season of UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica performances celebrating song and stories of family and of home with The Campbells of Greepe, one of the great dynasties of Gaelic song on Tuesday 15 April. The family’s roots lie in a tiny crofting township on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where music was the constant accompaniment to everyday life.

Pipers and singers who love to dance, it’s no surprise that the group are considered the masters of puirta-beul, Gaelic mouth music, and their performances encompass a whole musical world – pibroch songs (a form of pipe music featuring variations on a traditional theme), work songs and the songs of their own community.

For the final UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica of the season, LSO St Luke’s will welcome three generations of the family, plus special guests including virtuoso American step-dancer Nic Gareiss and award-winning piper Lorne MacDougall, for a lively evening full of beauty, wit and colour. lso.co.uk/eclectica

AURORA SPECIAL GUESTS

Aurora Orchestra has sky-rocketed to prominence since its establishment in 2005, and not without good reason. Never without a breath of fresh air, this dynamic young ensemble infuses eclectic programming with innovative concert presentation and inspiring artistic partnerships to scintillating effect.

This season Aurora presents two characteristically ingenious events at LSO St Luke’s. Featuring acclaimed countertenor Iestyn Davies, How Pure the Sky (1 May) explores a programme that ‘contemplates virtue, peace, and celestial heights’. From Bach’s meditative Widerstehe doch der Sünde to works by the ‘brightest stars’ of contemporary music, including Thomas Adès and Nico Muhly, this programme promises to inspire and uplift music lovers of all stripes.

Then it’s back down to earth with just the right sort of bump. Jitterbug (20 July) is straight-shooting stimulation: this no-holds-barred ‘shake-down’ inspired by the prohibition era features music by Paganini, Stravinsky and Gershwin. Combined with foot-tapping grooves from Aurora Leader Thomas Gould’s swing outfit Man Overboard. What’s more, there’s a pre-concert swing dance lesson for those who want to get in the mood, and a post-concert speakeasy for those still standing.

STRAUSS 150 LSO DISCOVERY

Born in Germany in 1864, Richard Strauss began composing at the age of six – the first steps of a career that took in over 60 years at the forefront of musical life in Europe. This summer, 150 years after his birth, the LSO will be exploring his legacy with a series at LSO St Luke’s and the Barbican, featuring some of his thrilling orchestral and operatic music, plus an in-depth LSO Discovery Day. Strauss touched on almost every genre over the course of his career, as the musical world around him shifted from late-Romanticism to the innovations of the 20th century. His tone poems (evocative orchestral works that tell a story through music) were his first breakthrough; the LSO’s concerts at the Barbican explore this vivid music, alongside extracts from the opera Der Rosenkavalier.

Beyond the fantastic tales of his tone poems and operas, Strauss’ life and career made for a fascinating story. Come and explore more at the LSO Discovery Day on 4 May, when you’ll have the chance to hear a performance of his moving Metamorphosen, watch an LSO rehearsal and gain insights from a guest speaker.

LSO Discovery Friday Lunchtime Concerts are the perfect way to find out more about the instruments of the orchestra and the music written for them. Given by LSO players and musicians from the Guildhall School together with presenter Rachel Leach, these friendly, informal performances take place in the Jerwood Hall at LSO St Luke’s and last for 45 minutes, making them the ideal way to spend a lunch break.

This summer’s lunchtime series mirrors the focus of the LSO’s evening concerts taking place at the Barbican this June: Beethoven. Possibly the most influential composer in history, Ludwig van Beethoven’s music is both incredibly beautiful and powerfully dramatic. In order to get to grips with his musical world, this series explores music not only by Beethoven but by his contemporaries and devotees as well.

No doubt these wonderful lunchtime concerts will whet your appetite for Beethoven and you’ll find yourself wanting more – they’re the perfect prelude to the Symphonies, Overtures, Concertos and Mass at the Barbican.

Written on one of Saint-Saëns frequent winter vacations to Egypt, the music is infused with exotic influences from Java, Spain and the Middle East. Grieg’s lively Symphonic Dances and Bell Ringing (Klokkenlang) complete the programme as the Orchestra makes a return visit to LSO St Luke’s.

Since 2005, Richard Skelton has been making unique, raw and powerful landscape-inspired compositions which have garnered much praise. Working with the Elysian String Quartet, he will be performing a new series of works which see him taking his signature sound into new and exciting territory.

Jeremy Denk is one of today’s most intelligent and insightful pianists.

In addition to being a compelling artist, his writing on music has been praised by Alex Ross (author of The Rest is Noise, music critic and journalist for The New Yorker) for its ‘arresting sensitivity and wit’. In 2012 Denk was awarded a MacArthur Foundation award, popularly known as the MacArthur ‘genius grants’.

Before the concert, at 5.30pm, Denk introduces a screening of his new DVD, Liner notes to the Goldbergs, which accompanies his recent release of the work on Nonesuch.

Inside Out is a series of free lunchtime outdoor music events during the summer. With a variety of musical styles from across the globe, there’s something for everyone! This year’s concerts feature a dynamic jazz session by trumpeter Byron Wallen (6 June), a family friendly sing-along with Harriette Ashcroft and her band (27 June), and a celebration of Brazilian music with Latin American singer Guillermo Rozenthuler (11 July). We invite people to bring their lunches to enjoy the summer sunshine with some music – a perfect break from the office and great for families.

Also, come and support the LSO Community Choir as they join the Whitecross Street Party on 20 July.

The annual local festival, which will be held on 19 and 20 July, presents high quality street arts, live music and tasty food.

Portland-based musician Grouper (Liz Harris) juxtaposes layers of processed field recordings, choral harmonies and keyboard in a resonant framework that moves behind and through a 16mm film

by Paul Clipson. Clipson’s densely rhythmical images in turn traverse Grouper’s musical language to create startling, revelatory, and critical associations. Together they invite the audience to participate in a collective mind’s-eye trip through landscapes of American myth making.

Richard Morrison, the chief music critic of The Times, offers a wide-ranging survey of music education in Britain, illustrated by performances from the talented youngsters of LSO Youth Choirs, Tomorrow’s Warriors and the Purcell School. He then chairs a panel discussion with leading figures in music, education and the media, including Kathryn McDowell, the Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Darren Henley, the Managing Director of Classic FM and the author of two important Government reports on music and arts education.
