LSO Season 2015/16 Summer Concert Guide
SUMMER 2016
London’s Symphony Orchestra
The LSO is the capital’s oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world’s finest, with over a century of history behind it and one hundred musicians forming its membership. Each year the LSO joins forces with the world’s leading conductors and soloists to perform 70 concerts at the Barbican Centre. During summer 2016, we welcome pianist Leif Ove Andsnes for his Artist Portrait series, Sir Simon Rattle – the Orchestra’s future Music Director – returns to conduct the world premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ children’s opera, The Hogboon, and the Orchestra takes over London’s Trafalgar Square once again for the annual BMW LSO Open Air Classics concert on 22 May. Beyond our home in the City of London, the LSO performs a further 70 concerts all over the world. Recent tours have taken the Orchestra to all the major European cities and further-flung destinations including the US, Australia, Singapore, India, China and Japan. The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall, too. LSO Discovery, our education and community programme, which

WELCOME / SIR MARK ELDER ~ LSO.CO.UK
‘Performing The Kingdom with the LSO in 2011 was a great joy. I look forward to The Dream of Gerontius with great anticipation.’ Sir Mark Elder
Elder, Elgar & England The LSO and Sir Mark Elder commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme with a programme of British and French music from the early 20th century. The series centres around works written by Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Butterworth, composers whose music has become synonymous with the British sentiment during this pivotal period in history. On 24 April, Sir Mark Elder takes on Elgar’s monumental oratorio, The Dream of Gerontius, an undeniable cornerstone of the British choral repertoire and a work that achieved immense popularity during World War I. This is followed on 28 April with an exploration of the effect the War had on music, with works of the era from both sides of the Channel. Complementing the LSO’s performances, a series of four BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke’s begins on 14 April. It takes Elgar’s chamber music for strings as its starting point, revealing some of the composer’s most intimate and moving works, many of which were written during World War I.

Only the very best merit an LSO Artist Portrait. Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes returns to the LSO this summer for his second. The New Yorker called him ‘one of the few who possess power and personality in equal measure’, and if you’ve ever heard him perform you’ll know that his concerts are more about sharing a life-long love affair with music, rather than just displaying his immense talent. Alongside our Principal Guest Conductors Daniel Harding and Michael Tilson Thomas he’ll play Mozart (8 May) and Schumann (12 May),

before capping off the series with a solo recital of Sibelius, Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin (10 Jun). Along the way, he’s joined by close friends and musical collaborators Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann and Clemens Hagen for a special performance of Brahms’ Piano Quartets (28 May) – in his own words: ‘the best chamber music that there is’.

BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS ELGAR UP CLOSE As the LSO explores the impact of World War I on orchestral musical at the Barbican, our BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts in April and May take Elgar’s chamber music as their starting point, revealing some of the composer’s most intimate and moving works, many of which were written during the war. Composed as Europe teetered on the brink of war, it’s hard not to imagine that the intense, melancholy violin melodies of Sospiri give voice to a very personal feeling of sadness. The Piano Quintet, String Quartet and Violin Sonata, meanwhile, were all written during 1918, when Elgar, deeply troubled by the losses of the War, was seeking refuge from London in the quiet Sussex countryside. The series places Elgar within the wider landscape of English musical history. His works are complemented by those of musical compatriots whose lives were also touched by the events of the 20th century: Benjamin Britten, a pacifist and conscientious objector during World War II; and Ralph Vaughan Willliams, whose hugely popular The Lark Ascending was written in 1914, on the eve of war.
