LSO Sing GETTING THE CITY INTO SONG LSO DISCOVERY / UBS SOUNDSCAPES: ECLECTICA
Singing can be powerfully spiritual, as the UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica An Eastern Vigil concert on Wednesday 22 January demonstrates. The Grammy award-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, one of the most famous choirs in the world, collaborates with Gilad Atzmon, a writer, award-winning jazz saxophonist and member of The Blockheads living in London. They explore the mystical and spiritual soundworlds of Arvo Pärt, Cyrillus Kreek, Vasyl Barvinski, Nikolai Kedrov and Rachmaninov combined with Atzmon’s swirling improvisations.
With concerts as inspiring as these, we hope you’ll want to join in. That’s the idea behind our LSO Singing Days on Saturday 4 January and Saturday 25 January. Whether or not you plan to come to the performance of Haydn’s The Creation at the Barbican or to see the excerpts of Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil in the Eclectica concert at LSO St Luke’s, come and join LSO choral professionals in workshops on these works, followed by an informal performance that friends and family can watch. There’s no better way to experience the joy of singing. lso.co.uk/lsosing lso.co.uk/eclectica

Later in the week, our attention turns to the LSO Panufnik Composers Workshop. Every year, the LSO takes on a group of composers on the verge of their professional careers. Working with composer Colin Matthews, they develop orchestral works and get the unrivalled opportunity to workshop their creations with the LSO, gaining instant and muchvalued feedback from the players. Schubert & Brahms BARRY DOUGLAS’ BRAHMS + SPRING-TIME SCHUBERT BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS
This spring, lunchtimes at LSO St Luke’s will be the setting for two very different musical journeys – a residency focusing on collaboration and an exploration of one composer’s intense, lyrical music. In January and February, we welcome back pianist Barry Douglas, an old friend of the LSO and a previous soloist at LSO St Luke’s. He’s invited a host of close musical friends for a series of collaborative concerts focusing particularly on Brahms’ chamber music, works that defined the genre in the late-Romantic era. The series is bookended by solo recitals by Douglas, which include two of the very first Nocturnes for piano and solo works by Brahms and Schubert. The second series moves from a performer’s perspective to an exploration of a single composer, Franz Schubert. The four concerts, performed by some of the most talented among the younger generation of chamber musicians, give a snapshot of some of the music that he wrote towards the end of his short life, from dramatic pieces for piano duet to duos, trios and his String Quintet in C major, his last chamber work and one of his most achingly beautiful and spiritual. lso.co.uk/lunchtimeconcerts

RUSSIAN PIANO WORKS BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS
For the final series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts in the 2013/14 season, LSO St Luke’s will host four leading Russian pianists, who give us a taste of their own venerable national tradition. These four sparkling recitals take in a selection of the greatest Russian Romantic piano works, from Mussorgsky’s evocative Pictures at an Exhibition, his most celebrated work for the piano, to lesser-known but equally imaginative pieces by Taneyev and Blumenfeld. Along with music by Russian masters Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, there is a particular focus on sonatas by Scriabin, running in tandem with Valery Gergiev’s series of his complete orchestral works with the LSO at the Barbican. The selection of pieces charts a journey through the composer’s career, from early Romantic lyricism to the intense, mysterious chromaticism of his later works. With some of the most skilled and spectacularly virtuosic pianists joining us for the series, including International Tchaikovsky Competition-winner Nikolai Demidenko, these recitals promise to bring the 2013/14 season of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts to a dazzling conclusion. lso.co.uk/lunchtimeconcerts

CAMPBELLS OF GREEPE UBS SOUNDSCAPES: ECLECTICA
Tue 15 Apr 8pm
We continue our season of UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica performances celebrating song and stories of family and of home with The Campbells of Greepe, one of the great dynasties of Gaelic song, who finish the series on Tuesday 15 April. The family’s roots lie in a tiny crofting township on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where music was the constant accompaniment to everyday life. Pipers and singers who love to dance, it’s no surprise that they’re considered the masters of puirt-a-beul, Gaelic mouth music, and their performances encompass a whole musical world – pibroch songs (a form of pipe music featuring variations on a traditional theme), work songs, and the songs of their own community.
