Ramadan mubarak Ramadan is a month of solidarity, helping each other. In that month, hearts soften, souls broaden, and senses of generosity revive. When the rich get hungry, they understand the conditions and needs of the poor better. If it were not for fasting, some rich people who only think of their own interest would not think that the poor needed help and compassion. Thus, by behaving with compassion towards others, man can open a real door of being thankful. “Everyone can find a needier person than himself in a way. He is responsible for showing compassion to that person.” From this point of view, Londra Gazete prides on being a pioneer unit for Turkish speaking community in London and the wider section of United Kingdom. Ramadan is a time in which the poor are given attention and helped; the lonely and the needy are supported. Especially going through a period whereby, discrimination and xenophobia persists, it is vital to act in solidarity and mutual respect.

What is Islam’s holiest month

?

Ramadan

M

illions of Muslim all around the world begin a month of praying, fasting and nightly feast. Here some information about Islam’s holiest month; Ramadan. FASTING DURING RAMADAN The fast is believed to bring the faithful closer to God and to raise awareness of the suffering of the less fortunate. Muslims frequently donate to charities during this special month and organise events or other alternative ways to provide food for the people in need. Fasting is an exercise in self-control. It’s perceived as a way to physically and spiritually detoxify by kicking impulses like morning coffee, smoking and midday snacking. Ramadan is a period to disengage from worldly amusement and spotlight on one’s

prayers. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, charity, and performing the hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. Observant Muslims cease from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for the entire month of Ramadan, with a single sip of water or a puff of a cigarette considered adequate to invalidate the fast. Muslims are also heartened to perceive the five daily prayers on time and to use their downtime just before breaking their fast at sunset to recite Quran and intensify remembrance of God. To compose for the fast, Muslims consume what is commonly called “suhoor,” a pre-dawn meal of power foods to get them through the day. BREAKING THEIR FAST Muslims traditionally break their fast likewise the way Prophet Muhammad did

1,400 years ago, which is consistence of a sip of water and some dates at sunset. That first sip of water is by far the most foreseen moment of the day. Subsequent to a sunset prayer, a substantial feast known as “iftar” is participated with family and friends. Iftar is a social event as much as it is a gastronomical adventure. Within the Arab world, juices made from apricots are a staple at Ramadan iftars. In South Asia and Turkey, yogurt-based drinks are popular. Across the Muslim world, mosques and aid organizations set up tents and tables for the public to eat free iftar meals every night of Ramadan. BEING FREE FROM FASTING There are special cases for children, the elderly, the sick, women who are pregnant or menstruating and people traveling, also could comprise athletes participating in

tournaments. A Muslims, particularly those who live in the U.S. and Europe, are accepting and welcoming of others around them who are not observing Ramadan. They also are not expecting shorter work hours, as is the case in the public sector across much of the Arab world during Ramadan. RAMADAN TRADITIONS Typically, the start of the month is welcomed with greetings such as “Ramadan mubarak!” Another hallmark of Ramadan is nightly prayer at the mosque among Sunni Muslims called “taraweeh.” In Egypt, a common sight during Ramadan is a lantern called the “fanoos,” which is often the centrepiece at an iftar table and can be seen hanging in window shops and balconies. In the Arabian Gulf countries, wealthy sheikhs hold “majlises” where they open their doors for people to pass by all hours of the night for food, tea, coffee and conversation. Increasingly common are

Ramadan tents in five-star hotels that offer lavish and pricey meals from sunset to sunrise. While Ramadan is a boon for retailers in the Middle East and South Asia, critics say the holy month is increasingly becoming commercialized. MARKING THE END OF RAMADAN The end of Ramadan is marked by intense worship as Muslims seek to have their prayers answered during “Laylat al-Qadr” or “the Night of Destiny.” It is on this night, which falls during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, that Muslims believe that God sent the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad and revealed the first versus of the Quran. Some devout Muslims go into reclusion those final days, spending all of their time in the mosque. The end of Ramadan is celebrated by a three-day holiday called Eid al-Fitr. Children often receive new clothes, gifts and cash. Muslims attend early morning Eid prayers the day after Ramadan. Families usually spend the day at parks and eating — now during the day.

Solidarity and respect to Muslims practising Ramadan

T

he Islamic holy month is of huge significance within the Islamic world as a opportunity to show appreciation to Allah and escape from the pace of everyday life. Ramadan is a exceptional month in the Islamic calendar when practising Muslims portray their admiration for the time in which Allah revealed his teachings to the Prophet Mohammad. In consideration of the words heard by the Prophet it is believed to construct the Islamic holy text, the

Qur'an, the holy month is of great significance across the Islamic world as a chance to show appreciation to Allah and escape from the pace of everyday life. It implicates a spotlight on being one's best possible self, with the hunger, thirst, frustration and irritation felt by everyone all put to the test during of self-restraint followed by celebration. Therefore, being a Muslim which practices the norms of the holy month in a country whereby not everyone is fast-

ing can be challenging. Here are some reccomendations you can do to portray solidairty and acknowledgement to followers of Islam in the course of Ramadan. BEING MINDFUL OF THE BASICS OF RAMADAN Ramadan is extensively proposed to begin on May 15 this year, despite the fact that date changes annually. The holy month runs according to the lunar Islamic calendar, and begins upon the first glimpses of the crescent moon. Sunni Muslims traditionally use a telescope to spot the light creeping across the moon, while Shia Muslims traditionally look with the naked eye. This illustrates why Ramadan starts moderately later in Shia-majority countries, for instance Iran, than in Sunni-majority countries, like Jordan.Everywhere else, it relies on the branch of Islam is being practised. UNDERSTANDING THE MEANING OF FASTING In various occasions fasting is often mistaken for dieting thus, some Muslims say the month is often confused with a kind of dietary "detox", but that this interpretation is a

misinterpretation of its real scope. It involves abstinence from eating, drinking water, and smoking between the local sunrise and sunset times - and trying to abstain from sensual and sexual

pleasures throughout the entire month. These are manifestations of a kind of spiritual fast, in which followers of Islam do not lose their temper, become angry or try to pursue their own selfish interests.

Best destinations to visit during Ramadan The Islamic month of Ramadan will last until 14 June this year and it is a spiritual time for those who are fasting. Though, this holy month formulates a great opportunity for travellers who wish to visit a Muslim majority country during this meaningful religious festival. Here are some destinations to consider:

ISTANBUL, TURKEY The ancient city of Istanbul was the capital of Islamic culture during the Ottoman Empire and stays true to its roots through its festive celebrations of Ramadhan. The local governments subsidise the construction of Iftar tents in which fasters and non-fasters can come together to celebrate and at night the city’s public spaces become filled with spiritual celebra-

CO

FES, MOROC

The Old Medina in Fes is another hub of Muslim culture. Walking around the medieval walled city, visitors can embrace the history and culture while experiencing the bustling modern life of the city. It is also the site of the world’s oldest university, al-Qarawiyyin, and numerous Mosques that serve as gateways into the rich Muslim culture.

CAIRO, E GYPT The breaking of the fast is a great opportunity to mix with the local people and try the traditional Moroccan Iftar meal, as it differs slightly from place to place. There are family filled funfairs in the public squares and music and light shows are not uncommon. As in Dubai, a cannon will be fired to signal the beginning and end of the fast.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Ramadhan in Malaysia is particularly known for its special food markets and bazaars that sell a wide variety of traditional snacks, delicacies and desserts, many of them unique to Malaysia as a result of the nation’s cultural diversity. Locals frequent the markets, making them a great place for tourists and non-fasters to interact

tion; public readings of the Quran occur and markets open with stalls and vendors selling traditional snacks and religious books and ornaments. Street performances of shadow puppets and traditional folk dances commence. Furthermore, Ramadhan is an ideal time to visit Istanbul’s famous Blue Mosque to learn about and experience the Muslim faith.

and celebrate with the locals and fasters. It is not uncommon for tourists to be invited to celebrate with locals and their families. Celebrations also include special performances of traditional dances. The Mosques in Kuala Lumpur depict the mix between the traditional designs with more modern architecture.

The city of Cairo was where many ancient civilisations met, resulting in a mixed cultural heritage. However, during the holy month of Ramadhan, Egyptians are seen to embrace the Islamic roots of the city and visitors will see festive Ramadhan lanterns decorating the homes, restaurants and streets of Cairo. The lanterns are lit at sunset, signaling the end of the fast and turned off when the sun rises in preparation

for the day of fasting. After the Iftar meal, people flood the city’s streets and markets, making them especially lively. Cairo’s main tourist attractions all remain open during Ramadhan, although may close earlier and for Eid Al Fitr. Cairo boasts some of the world’s most beautiful examples of historic Islamic architecture and visitors to these sites will appreciate the heightened feeling of celebration.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Dubai is a tourist hotspot all year round, but during the month of Ramadhan, Dubai is even more enchanting. In addition to the tourist amenities that Dubai offers on a regular basis, visitors during Ramadhan can participate in events organized by the local government, aimed at educating and reminding the public of the meaning and importance of the Holy time. Iftar is announced in Dubai by the sounding of cannons.

Hotels often construct Ramadhan Majlis (Arabic tents) decorated with ornate cushions and Persian carpets in which to celebrate the Iftar meal every evening. The meal includes a variety of cuisines reflecting Arabic culture. These meals are typically held after the sundown prayers have taken place, when the celebration really begins. Dubai possibly offers more services for non-fasters than other destinations.

It will consist of live catwalk shows,

The Prophet Muhammad

M

uslims believe that Islam is a faith that has always existed and that it was gradually revealed to humanity by a number of prophets, but the final and complete revelation of the faith was made through the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE. Muhammad was born in Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 570. He was a deeply spiritual man and often spent time in meditation on Mount Hira. Abdülmuttalib, when asked the meaning of his grandchild he stated: “I gave the name of Muhammad because I know that in the heaven Almighty, the people in the earth, they will remember him ...” The mother said “Ahmed”. (Muhammad refers to someone who is

highly praised and praised for his superiority and virtues, and who praises. The traditional story of the Qur’an tells how one night in 610 he was meditating in a cave on the mountain when he was visited by the angel Jibreel who ordered him to recite. Once Jibreel mentioned the name of Allah, Muhammad began to recite words which he came to believe were the words of God. The prophet Muhammad was a perfect example of an honest, just, merciful, compassionate, truthful, and brave human being. He was far removed from all evil characteristics and strove solely for the sake of God and his reward in the hereafter. Moreover, in all his actions and dealings, he was ever mindful and fearful of God.

MAY 2018

THE QURAN During the rest of his life, Muhammad continued to receive these revelations. The words were remembered and recorded, and form the text of the Holy Qu’ran, the Muslim scripture. As soon as he began to recite the Quran and to preach the truth which God has revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered persecution from unbelievers. The prosecution grew so fierce that in the year 66 God gave them the command to emigrate. This emigration from Makkah to the city of Madinah, some 250 miles to the north marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. PREACHING Believing that God had chosen him as his messenger Muhammad began to preach what God had revealed to him. The simple and clear-cut message of Islam, that there is no God but Allah, and that life should be lived in complete submission to the will of Allah, was attractive to many people, and they flocked to hear it. THE HIJRAH Muhammad’s popularity was seen as threatening by the people in power in Mecca,

and Muhammad took his followers on a journey from Mecca to Medina in 622. This journey is called the Hijrah (migration) and the event was seen as so important for Islam that 622 is the year in which the Islamic calendar begins. THE RETURN TO MECCA Within ten years Muhammad had gained so many followers that he was able to return and conquer Mecca. From this time on he was generally accepted by the faithful as the true final Prophet of God. Muhammad continued to lead his community both spiritually and in earthly matters until his death in 632. MESSENGER OF GOD It is mandatory that Muslims believe in all Prophets and Messengers of God, without making any distinction between them. As Allah states in the Quran regarding the believers: “All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” Quran 2:285 Muslims wholeheartedly believe that Prophet Muhammad was the greatest of all Proph-

ets due to the many pieces of evidence available. Allah states in the Quran: “Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but (he is) the Apostle of God, and JUSTICE The Prophet asked people to be just and kind. As the supreme judge and arbiter, as the leader of men, as generalissimo of a rising power, as a reformer and apostle, he had always to deal with men and their affairs. He had often to deal with mutually inimical and warring tribes when showing justice to one carried the danger of antagonizing the other, and yet he never deviated from the path of justice. In administering justice, he made no distinction between believers and nonbelievers, friends and foes, high and low.

Quran The holy book for Muslims:

“The Quran: literally, ‘that which is often recited.’ A web of rhythm and meaning, the words of which throb through Muslim worship and which, at every point in the believer’s life, break surface, sanctifying existence with the scent of eternity.”

ORIGIN OF THE QURAN Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel on numerous occasions between the years 610 and Muhammad's death in 632. In addition to memorizing his revelations, his followers are said to have written them down on parchments, stones, bones, sticks, and leaves. Muslims believe that the Quran available today is the same as that revealed to Prophet Muhammad and by him to his followers, who memorized his words. Scholars accept that the version of the Quran used today was first compiled in writing by the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, sometime between 650 and 656. He sent copies of his version to the various provinces of the new Muslim empire and directed that all variant copies be destroyed. However, some sceptics doubt the recorded oral traditions (hadith) on which the account is based and will say only that the Quran must have been compiled before 750.

14

Londra Ramadan |

There are also numerous traditions, and many conflicting academic theories, as to the provenance of the verses later assembled into the Quran. Most Muslims accept the account recorded in several hadith, which state that Abu Bakr, the first caliph, ordered Zayd ibn Thabit to collect and record all the authentic verses of the Quran, as preserved in written form or oral tradition. Zayd's written collection, privately treasured by Muhammad's widow Hafsa bint Umar, was used by Uthman and is the basis of today's Quran. Uthman's version organized the revelations, or suras, roughly in order of length, with the longest suras at the start of the Quran and the shortest ones at the end. Later scholars have struggled to put the suras in chronological order, and among Muslim commentators at least there is a rough consensus as to which suras were revealed in Mecca and which at Medina. Some suras (eg surat Iqra) were revealed in parts at separate times.

MAY 2018

QURAN AND MUSLIM DEVOTION The form of the Quran most used today is the Al-Azhar text of 1923, prepared by a committee at the prestigious Cairo University of Al-Azhar. The Quran early became a focus of Muslim devotion and eventually a subject of theological controversy. In the 8th century, the Mu'tazilis claimed that the Quran was created in time and was not eternal. Their opponents, of various schools, claimed that the Quran was eternal and perfect, existing in heaven before it was revealed to Muhammad. The Mu'tazili position was supported by caliph al-Mamun. The caliph persecuted, tortured, and killed the anti-Mu'tazilis, but their belief eventually triumphed and is held by most Muslims of today. Only reformist or liberal Muslims are apt to take something approaching the Mu'tazili position. Most Muslims regard the Quran with extreme veneration, wrapping it in a clean cloth, keeping it on a high shelf, and washing as for

prayers before reading the Quran. Old Qurans are not destroyed as wastepaper but deposited in Quran graveyards. The Quran is regarded as an infallible guide to personal piety and community life, and completely true in its history and science. From the beginning of the faith, most Muslims believed that the Quran was perfect only as revealed in Arabic. Translations were the result of human effort and human fallibility, as well as lacking the inspired poetry believers find in the Quran. Translations are therefore only commentaries on the Quran, or "translations of its meaning", not the Quran itself. READING THE QURAN There are 114 chapters, known as or Surahs, in the Quran. Many Muslims read the Quran by dividing it into 30 equal parts, called juz'. The goal is to try to read one juz' each day, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Early Muslims memorized the Quran to pass it along verbally to the next generation because they couldn't read, but memorizing the Quran is not required today. Followers treat the Quran with reverence; Muslim's don't eat, speak, drink or make noise while anyone reads the Quran.

BELIEFS Muslims believe the Quran is the holiest book because it remains unaltered, whereas disciples of other religions altered their holy texts through successive generations. By following the word of Allah, as written in the Quran, Muslims believe they can achieve happiness on Earth and peace in the afterlife. The Quran dictates how to avoid the influences of the devil, or Shaytaan and escape hell. While followers also read the Hadith, only the Quran comes directly from Allah, so this book is sacred. POWER Islam teaches that if you read the Quran in its entirety, Allah will grant one of your prayers. Traditionally, Muslims read the Quran and then they pray to Allah. Islamic people view the Quran as a source of guidance and societal laws.

May this Ramadan bring joy, health and wealth to you.

CUSTOMER SPECIAL PRODUCT LABEL Having produced five different flavoured kinds of ketchup for over 50 years without breaking the traditional recipe, the company brings its products to consumers with special labelling in line with the customer's request. Thus, food wholesalers are offered the opportunity to create their own brands without sacrificing quality NO COMPETITORS The company manager Işık Vedat, stated that they were catching a popular taste in the UK with the ketchup they produced and he shared an interesting story he experienced a while ago: "One day a person came and said he wanted to meet me; I accepted the meeting and found out that the person who came was the salesperson of our biggest rival amongst the ketchup market. This person who came without an appointment was trying to sell ketchup to our customers for a long time. He explained his visit by stating; "I visit your customers as your rival and I sell them a variety of sauce products, mainly mayonnaise, but I have not been able to per-

suade them to sell any ketchup products. Therefore, I came here to visit you to find out the secret of your success"said Vedat. Consequently, Vedat asserted that there were no competitors in the production and sale of ketchup. NO SUGAR ADDED TO KETCHUPS Vedat noted that McDonald’s and Heinz’s products in the UK food industry were too sugary, “We are very confident of our quality and taste. So much so that in the surveys we made in one of the UK's leading food wholesalers (Cash and Carry) we saw people prefer us to Heinz. For more taste, more sugar added ketchup is no longer desired by people and sugar is not preferred due to harm to human body. A woman who participated in the survey unwittingly stated that she was giving her children sugar and said she would now consume

our sauces.” SAUCES INCREASE SATISFACTORY NOT INCOME The Ukay Catering manager additionally points out that many business directors tend to assume “I give the sauce for free, it increases the cost” however, Vedat affirms that this is a misconception and adds that “Some of my customers tell me they do not get money for ketchup so they want the cheapest ketchup, thus I tell them even the cheapest meat of potatoes will taste better with quality ketchup. There's no extra charge for onions used in burgers however, no one wants to use cheap onions just because they do not get extra money for onions. We believe that some restaurants which produce delicious meals using the finest quality meat, potatoes, and other products tend to reduce their cost by using cheaper sauces, although this is just throwing their labour to

waste. The reason for the wrong calculations is that managers think that using sauce increases the costs, but it is not; The cost of ketchup is as low as on-the-go." ALWAYS STANDS WITH SOCIETY On one hand Ukay Catering presents the healthiest sauces to its consumer and on the other hand, Ukay Catering ensures material and spiritual support and awareness in terms of social responsibility matters. The company management, which takes care of all kinds of cultural, artistic and social contributions, says that they will continue to stand by our community members who live many kilometres away from their lands. The importance of peace for Islam

I

slam is a religion given by Allah for people to live in happiness and peace. The most important feature of this religion is to ensure good relations among people and calling universal peace. From the roots of “S-I-m”, Islam refers to peace. Islam offers peaceful life to mankind, manifested in the world by God’s eternal mercy and compassion. It contains the rules of good morals and virtues which people can live in compassion, tolerance, and peace regardless of anger, hatred and violence. However, Despite the call of peace in many books and relics, unfortunately, people have fought and killed each other for years. In relation to recent research, it was revealed that people have lived in peace for a total of 250 years. With this in mind and taking into account that humanity is thought to be 7000 years, it could be perceived that humanity holds negative aspects. UNIVERSAL PEACE Muslims understanding of peace is not to limit peace only to believers, however, to present it to all humanity. Even for those who do not hold inner peace and have bad intentions. At the end of every prayer they make, Muslims say, “ es-Selamu Aleyküm ve Rahmatullah”. They salute the visible and invisible beings and declare that they are at peace with them. In addition, it is also meaningful that a prayer is finished this way too. It is another proof of how much importance he attaches to peace as well as

expressing his good intentions towards other creatures when he begins to salute them at a time when he will be acquainted with other creatures while he finishes his worship with Allah. At the same time, peace can also be regarded as a product of a mature person loaded with spiritual feelings of worship. Because living in peace in a real sense is closely related to being fed with high values and matured. THE BEST ROLE MODEL OUR PROPHET Unless social justice is ensured in a society, it is not possible to speak of a long-term peace, and it is inevitable that there will be a conflict. Social peace cannot be established unless the minimum standards applicable to human life are provided. Chaos and anarchy are unavoidable. If there is an injustice in the equitable distribution of goods and if an imbalance occurs, it will not be possible for peace to last for a long time. Our Prophet (saas) has many warnings about this subject. Soon after his death, people fell into disagreement and started fighting and fighting. Moreover, many of those who fought saw our master in his health witnessed their own implementation and witnessed him as a peace prophet. Even though this is the case, they immediately entered into each other and fought. This is the clearest example of the inability to use the great invisibility and mind that humanity has fallen into.

BEAUTY OF ISLAM Islam is based upon good morality. This morality is outlined in the Quran whereby, it is based on man’s belief and the morality of the world. Good ethics for the creation and living of the peaceful environment are of great importance. A Muslim who grows up with the moral virtues brought by the Qur’an approaches with the intention of Islam; respectful of any idea; always show compromising, reducing tension, embracing, and temperate behavior in the face of events. The abstract serves for peace. WAR IS LAST RESORT According to Islam, peace is not simply an absence of war. Peace opens doors to all kinds of opportunities that are present in any given situation. A true Muslim should seek to bring others close to him, not to drive them away from him. This is why the Prophet declared, in a Hadith report incorporate in the Sahih al-Bukhari: “In him, there is no merit who is not familiar with others and with whom others are not familiar”. Muslims should respect others and try to maintain peace and should follow the straight path. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was sent as nothing but mercy to all the mankind. If the bringer of a religion is nothing but mercy and in His brought Truth there is no compulsion then the impression that Islam promotes violence seems illogical. Thus, Islam in its true preaching is nothing but peace.

Here’s wishing you a blessed Ramadan!

Healthy benefits of the holy month Ramadan

I

If you’re one of those worries, then you must have a look at the following health benefits which you’ll relish during and after Ramadan. instantly becomes clear that dates are one of the healthiest fruits out there. BOOST YOUR BRAIN There is certainly a high probability that you’ll recognize the positive impacts that fasting can have on your mental prosperity and spiritual concentration, however, the brain-boosting powers of Ramadan are fairly more important than you may assume. A study pursued out by scientists in the USA discovered that the mental focus accomplished during Ramadan boosts the level of a brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which motivates the body to formulate more brain cells, therefore developing brain function. Correspondingly, a discrete decrease in the extent of the hormone cortisol, composed by the adrenal gland, signifies that stress levels are vastly reduced both during and after Ramadan. Also as you refrain from them your body will eventually accommodate to their existence, till your addiction fades away for good. A team of cardiologists in the UAE found that people observing Ramadan enjoy a positive effect on their lipid profile, which means there is a reduction of cholesterol in the blood. Low cholesterol increases cardiovascular health, greatly reducing the risk of suffering

APPETITE REDUCTION One of the main issues with extreme fad diets is that potential weight loss is frequently quickly put back on, sometimes even with a little-added extra. This isn’t the instance with Ramadan. The cutback in food consumed throughout fasting results in your stomach to eventually shrink, defining that you’ll need to eat less food to feel full. If you want to get into the habit of healthy eating then Ramadan is a great time to start. DIGESTING ADDITIONAL NUTRIENTS As a result of not eating during the day throughout Ramadan, you’ll realize that your metabolism becomes more efficient, meaning the number of nutrients you absorb from food improves. This is due to an expansion in a hormone named adiponectin, which is constructed by a compound of fasting and eating late at night and enables your muscles to absorb more nutrients. This will escort to health benefits all around the body, as numerous areas are able to absorb and construct use of the nutrients they require to function.

RAMADAN SOUP SPECIALS

R

amadan is a vital time whereby Turkish families merge together and spend extended periods eating, talking and socializing with extended families and friends while they relish a wide collection of delicious foods. Majority of the families stretch back to their roots during Ramadan and serve conventional dishes passed down through their families for generations. That’s why it’s one of the best times of year to enjoy classic Turkish cuisine and along choices. IFTAR Iftar is the term for the first meal of the day which breaks the period of fasting between sunrise and sunset each day. The choice of food at the iftar table is as essential as the way it’s served. Fairly important is the shopping, preparation, and suspense each day until the evening call to prayer when cooks, helpers and hungry diners alike finally relax and eat. WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO There are various customs enclosing the iftar meal. Just

26

after the ezan or call to prayer is heard, fasting diners begin their meal with a sip of water, a bite of ‘pide’ bread, and a date or two. When the fast is broken, it’s time to move on to the soup and light fare resembling classic Turkish breakfast. After a short break, diners endure consuming the main courses to come. The meal comes to an end with a choice of classic Turkish desserts and Turkish coffee or tea. IRREPLACEABLE OF THE IFTAR TABLE There are many foods that are standard at the ‘iftar’ table. Especially the items are eaten to break the fast each day.

Breakfast items that follow can be as a sample of olives and white cheese or more elaborate including many

Soup is one of the significant dishes for iftar and is always served at the beginning. Traditional soups served are; ezogelin, yayla, tomato, tarhana and strained red lentil soup.

RAMADAN VEGETABLES AND BEANS Turkish vegetables dishes are generally cooked in olive oil and served cold. Here are some favourites, Turkish style artichoke bottoms with vegetables, romano beans, pinto beans in tomato sauce, imam bayildi, okra with tomato and olive oil, celeriac, leeks and carrots and broad bean pods.

MAIN COURSES WITH MEAT Meat may be quite expensive in Turkey. Though, some families which don’t consume much red meat during the year splurge during Ramadan to serve at least one main course dish with meat. The most popular dishes with meat are hunkar beğendi, roasted lamb shank, eggplant and ground beef casserole, baked lamb wraps, baked meatball and potato stew, karnıyarık or kadın budu köftesi. RAMADAN SIDE DISHES Side dishes rich in carbohydrates are always part of the ‘iftar’ table along with the main course. Here are some of the common side dishes; bulger and vegetable rice, rice with orzo, Turkish stuffed peppers, stuffed vine leaves, potato salad, baked pasta and cheese casserole, salad with bulgur and vegetables or cheese pastry. DELICIOUS DESERTS Ramadan is a period where traditional desserts take the forefront. The best choices are desserts steeped in syrup

and milk-based desserts such as güllaç, baklava, şekerpare, revani, ekmek kadayıfı, kazandibi, tavuk göğüsü, sütlaç and safranlı zerde. BEVERAGES Along with plenty of water, non-alcoholic beverages of any kind can be served during Ramadan. The meal is always topped off with Turkish coffee or tea. The most popular beverages in the Turkish cuisine are inclusive of, ayran, lemonade, Turkish tea, and coffee also beet juice. WHAT TO AVOID AFTER IFTAR What you eat, or choose not to eat, during Ramadan makes a big difference to your energy levels. After fasting all day, there is often a temptation to overeat and load up on sugary beverages during iftar and suhoor, but you could be doing yourself a disservice. It's important to be quite careful and to avoid carbonated drinks, high sugar foods, and fried foods during iftar. Although, the Turkish cuisine offers healthy dishes for during iftar it is still vital to ensure a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Spiritual inspiration of Ramadan

T

uesday, 15 May marks a month-long fast observed by most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims. Fasting during the holy month is one of the five pillars of Islam, which also embraces prayer and charity. To fast, Muslims

28

Londra Ramadan |

refrain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to sunset. Muslims follow the lunar calendar, which signifies Ramadan arrives several days earlier each year. Fasting isn't a certain requirement. Children normally don't fast until they come to

MAY 2018

a certain age, and there are exclusions for people who are inadequate to fast due to illness, age or pregnancy. For followers of Islam, Ramadan is a joyous month of spiritual growth and late night family meals. It ends with a three-day festival called Eid al-Fitr. SPIRITUAL PURPOSE OF NOT EATING DURING THE DAY The spiritual purpose of fasting is the surrender, the submission to a higher authority, which is the creator. Not eating is central because, as human beings, how many times do we aim our hands toward our mouth? Many. It's the physical body we are feeding all day, but by abstaining from eating we are paying attention to the pains of hunger and thirst, and that makes you aware of those who don't get to break their fast because they're hungry all the time. It makes us very grateful for what we do have. We are not physical beings exclusively. We are spiritual

beings housed in a physical container. The physical body has its life and we have obligations to it, but it will be left behind. We can't let this physical body dominate the narrative. SPIRITUAL AWAKENING AND ADVANCEMENT Fasting is an institution for the betterment of a person both spiritually and morally. It is hoped that the changes one makes during this blessed month will be carried on long after Eid. The month of Ramadan is the most glorious time to make amends and seek forgiveness for our sins. Among the most basic and universal lessons of Ramadan is that each of us has the ability to change and become better. The Prophet spoke of the impact such changes will have in both this life and the hereafter: “Whoever among you improves his conduct during this month will have a safe passage on Sirat alMustaqeem, when many feet will slip away.” The environment presented

by Ramadan is perfect for increasing our spiritual concentration due to the absence of idle chatter, useless debates, and – God forbid – even gossiping or backbiting. The key to comprehending the manner in which we must strive to improve spiritually is through understanding why we fast. Fasting is an act of devotion that we use to seek nearness and increase our devotion to God. The most exalted and praised fast is one in which we disengage ourselves from everything other than Allah. By doing so, we free our hearts to the true and pure worship of God and remove worldly vices from our souls. During Ramadan, it is said we are the guests of Allah, but applying this concept is more difficult unless we invest great resolve in seeking God and His blessings. The following Prophetic tradition reinforces the above; “For the one fasting, there are two joys: joy when breaking his fast, and joy when he meets His Lord.”

Significance of staying healthy during Ramadan

R

amadan is the period of spiritual nourishment and reinforces the values of humanity. When the holy month of Ramadan approaches, people start to worry about how to keep a balance between fasting, dealing with the weather, and continuing daily activities. The 30 days of Ramadan require a strict schedule to be followed that includes fasting (Roza), reciting the Holy Quran (Tilawat), offering prayers (Namaz) five times a day, special prayer called ‘Taraweeh’ and, above all – good behaviour. DIET DURING RAMADAN Those who are observing fast need to have at least two meals a day – Suhoor (predawn meal) and Iftar (a meal at dusk). As fasting is one of the five main pillars of Islam, this exercise cannot be ignored or skipped. So, it be-

32

Londra Ramadan |

comes important to have such a diet during Surooh and Iftar that you can go on throughout the month with ease, especially during summers. DIET FOR SUHOOR Suhoor should include foods that digest slowly and provides enough energy for rest of the day. For Suhoor, one should prefer meal that is rich in carbohydrates, fibre and potassium over the food that burns fast – bananas, milk, dates, avocados, khajla-pheni, dried peaches, pistachios, pumpkin, peas, and dark chocolate. Bananas are high in potassium and suppress your thirst while dates will give you a good stock of energy to be consumed slowly throughout the day. DIET FOR IFTAR Following the Prophetic tradition, one should breakfast with dates as they provide a burst of energy. Avoid attacking food as soon as you break the fast and keep your

MAY 2018

dusk meal light. During Iftar, do not drink lots of water just because it takes less effort to fill stomach with water than with food. Rather, compliment your Iftar meal with fresh fruits. While breaking your fast, chew food slowly as it will speed up digestion and help maintain your weight. WHAT TO DO BETWEEN SUHOOR AND IFTAR The best way to spend your day during fast is to qualify the basic requirements of fasting. Ramadan is not just about fasting, and fasting is not just about keeping from food the entire day. The concept of Ramadan expects a Muslim to surrender himself to Almighty (Allah) and refrain from activities that pleases him or provokes him to do anything bad. Ramadan is a month-long effort to install a healthy

lifestyle that one can follow throughout his life. Whether it’s avoiding unhygienic food, behaving well in the society, doing physical exercise (namaz) regularly, personality development or making a good name, this is the month where one can improvise his inner self. WHAT TO DO BETWEEN IFTAR AND SUHOOR Once you have broken your fast, have a glass of water after every two hours. This is very important to restore the water level in your body. Those who are fitness freaks are not advised to work out immediately after Iftar as

body’s blood flow is concentrated around the stomach at that time. There should be a gap of at least two hours between you gym and Iftar. If you like desserts, have them, but leave at least a two-hour gap between Iftar and desserts to stay fresh and awake for Taraweeh prayers. Your body has a right over you, and when it wants rest, then rest. Go to bed on time and wake up fresh for the next Suhoor. Following this routine - cum - guidelines would hopefully allow you to enjoy a healthy lifestyle throughout the holy month of Ramadan and even after that.

Islam and Britain before the 20th century

F

ollowing the Crusades against Islam, Britain became friendly with a few Islamic countries. Queen Elizabeth I, for instance, requested the Ottoman Sultan Murad for naval support against the Spanish Armada. The first recorded Englishman to become a Muslim was John Nelson, who converted to Islam during the 16th Century. A 1641 document cites "a sect of Mahometans" being "discovered here in London". There were additionally some conversions to Islam within this period, and a few years after, in 1649, came the first English edition of the Qur'an, by Alexander Ross.

34

Londra Ramadan |

In the 18th and 19th Centuries, there were a various amount of converts to Islam in regards to the English upper classes, including Edward Montagu, son of the ambassador to Turkey. The first large group of Muslims in Britain arrived about 300 years ago. They were sailors recruited in India to work for the East India Company, thus the first Muslim communities were found in port towns. Ships cooks came too, many of them from Sylhet in what is now Bangladesh. There are records of Sylhetis working in London restaurants as early as 1873. A part of the Muslim sailors pronounced to remain in Brit-

MAY 2018

ain and simply left their ships without going through any formal immigration procedure. The next wave of Muslim immigration to Britain proceeded with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The expansion in trade triggered an appeal for men to work in ports and on ships. Most of these immigrants came from Yemen, likely due to the fact that Aden was the essential refueling stop for ships between Britain and the Far East, and many of the seamen later settled in the port cities of Cardiff, Liverpool, South Shields, Hull, and London. There are now an estimated 70-80,000 Yemenis living in Britain, who form the longest-established Muslim group in Britain. A case of this is that the Yemeni community of South Shields, which began at the end of the 19th century when Yemenis working as stokers on steamships moved ashore and set up boarding houses in the dock area. The first mosque in Britain is recorded as having been at 2 Glyn Rhondda Street, Cardiff, in 1860. IMMIGRATION Britain's Muslim population are almost all people who

immigrated to Britain in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s or their descendants. In the course of the first quarter of the 20th century, it was predicted that there were around 10,000 Muslims in Britain. Contemporarily there are between 1 and 2 million British Muslims (2% - 4% of the population), and a majority of them were born in Britain. THE FIRST IMMIGRANTS A vast amount of the immigrants during the 1950s and 60s migrated from India and Pakistan with the desire of a better material life. They had the potential to earn 30 times as much in Britain as they could in Pakistan. Although many made arrangements to bring their families to Britain once they'd accomplished financial security, others planned to save money to buy land in Pakistan and then return to the families they had left behind. Fear was another factor for people to come to Britain in the 1950s. Many left India because they wanted to get away from the disruption and community violence that concurred with the division of British India into Pakistan and India.

Another noteworthy reason why some Muslims left Pakistan was that of the construction of the Mangla Dam in the early 1960s. This submerged some 250 villages in the Mirpur District, and displaced 100,000 people; more than half the residents of some villages moved to Britain. Most immigrants came from farming areas such as Azad Kashmir and the Northwest Frontier, which had close connections with Britain as established recruiting grounds for the British army and the merchant navy. Almost all Bangladeshis came from Sylhet, which also had a long tradition of providing immigrants to Britain.

Laylat Al Qadr:

The Night of Power

T

he month of Ramadan, which is the month the Qur'an was sent down as a guidance for mankind, and clear signs of direction and distinction. Within the nights of Ramadan, there is one special night. Good deeds performed on that single night are equal to those performed over a thousand months. It is the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr), when the Qur'an was disclosed. Certain commentators suppose it was the night when the Qur'an was brought down from Baytul M`amur (Heavenly abode), for Jibrael to reveal in parts to the Prophet (s). Whilst some state it was the night when the Prophet received the entire Qur'an, however, was requested to transmit it as and when the occasion urged to. Laylatul Qadr is a celebration to celebrate the coming of the final guidance for humans. It is a praise to the commence-

ment of the message divulged to mankind by their Creator, a message which illustrates them the way to accomplish happiness in both the worlds. Likewise, as the arrival of a child is commemorated on its birth and then every year, as a bringer of joy and fulfillment for the family, Laylatul Qadr is celebrated as a bringer of light and guidance for mankind. Also, Laylatul Qadr consists of a feast for the spirit, a feast of worship and prayers. Some Ahadith designates that the fate of every believer for the coming year is decreed on this night. That is why the Du`as for this night ask for special favors in the decree for the year. Believers are endorsed to remain awake the entire night and pray for blessings and forgiveness. It is the holiest night of the year, and it would be unwise to be heedless of the tremendous benefits of this night. Lailat al Qadr, the Night of Power, cites the night in which

MAY 2018

the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Allah. Muslims consider this as the most significant event in history, and the Qur'an states that this night is better than a thousand months (97:3), and that on this night the angels descend to earth. This is a time that Muslims spend in study and prayer. Some will spend the whole night in prayer or in reciting the Qur'an. Lailat al Qadr is a good time to ask for forgiveness. Lailat al Qadr takes place during Ramadan. The date of 27 Ramadan for this day is a traditional date, as the Prophet Muhammad did not mention when the Night of Power would be, although it was suggested it was in the last 10 days of the month. Because of this, many Muslims will treat the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan as a particularly.

For observers in the Middle East, North Africa and most of the United Kingdom except Scotland, easy sightings of the first crescent of the new moon should be possible on Wednesday, May 16. People in Scotland will have to wait until Thursday, May 17, to see the moon, when it will be easy to see across the whole of the world. Muslim days start at sunset so Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of May 16 following confirmation of a sighting of the moon. As the Islamic months move back through the Western calendar, Ramadan is set to begin in April by 2020, in March by 2023 and in February by 2026. That means the daily hours of fasting will get shorter, offering some comfort to those who struggle to go without food and drink for such long periods.

thanksgiving. Eid falls on a day which values great merry-making. It is also a day of love, affection, harmony, and brotherhood. As it happens, the festival proceeds for three days, but most of the celebration transpires on the first day. Eid is perceived colourfully in an advantageous mean and with

Quran. These verses are- "Recite in the name of Your Allah who creates you, creates men from a clot. Recite and your lord is the most beautiful who teaches the man. He teaches the man what he doesn't know." from then Jibrail (am) visited with Muhammad (sm) many times following his 23 years and thought him the

and happiness and it greatly enjoyable with the nearest and dearest ones .On this day, special prayers are held the world over, between sunrise and noon, when the Muslims assemble, in large congregations, wearing their best dresses standing shoulder to shoulder, demonstrating for everyone the universal broth-

many non-Muslims participate in Eid celebration. They also stream to make their Eid shopping or purchasing new clothing’s. In relation, we can comment that the festival of Eid-ul Fitr has become a global festival. Muslim Community celebrates two great festivals annually identified as Eid-ul Fitr and other is Eid-ul Azha. Eid ul Fitr is an Arabic word precisely, `Eid' Means happiness, or festivity that emerges from the Arabic word `Aud' and Fitr means breaking of fast, termination of fast. Consequently, Eid-ul-Fitr conveys the festival of Fast-Breaking which return after a year. Though, Eid-ul- Fitr is commemorated on the first day of Shawaal, the tenth month in the Muslim calendar, to impress the end of a monthlong fast during the month of Ramadan. It is celebrated with immense passion and with great eagerness around the world. It is additionally a day of forgiveness, peace, and

a great zeal and zest. The common tradition of Eid is the gathering of families at the patriarchal home after the Eid prayers. Before the special Eid meal is served, young children line up in front of each adult family members who present money to the children. Eid-ul-Fitr is enthusiastically celebrated by all Muslims of the world. ORIGINATION OF EID By reference to the Islamic tradition and historians, it was in the year 610 A.D. Prophet Muhammad (sm) was meditating in the Mount Hera when He was 40 years old. One night during the month of Ramadan the prophetic vision the angel of Jibrail (ah), the messenger of Allah while he was meditating in the mount of Hera and said to read but Muhammad (sm) replied that he could not to read. The Jibrail (am) teaches him five verses from the Holy Quran that is also known as the first verse of the Holy

holy knowledge inverses. This sacred knowledge consists of the code of conduct that Allah wants his people to maintain on earth. As a mark of respect to Allah and show gratitude to him for the true knowledge that he gave to the people. The prophet asked him to pass the month of Ramadan in fasting, prayers and other austerities and end of the monthlong restraint with a festive celebration. This practice laid the foundation of Eid- ul Fitr. And the first Eid-ul Fitr was celebrated in 624 A.D by the prophet Hz. Muhammad (sm) with his friends and relatives after the victory of battle Jang-e Badr. IMPORTANCE OF EID The importance of Eid-ulFitr is completely spiritual. It is the day which the Muslim population portrays appreciation to Allah for having given them the will, the strength and the endurance to observe fast and obey His commandment during the holy month of Ramadan. Eid reveals delight

erhood which is another distinguishing feature of Islam. On this specific day all the Muslim population, regardless of class, economic and social status, perform the Eid Salat under open the sky and they forget their own class, status, power and they embrace each other. This manner illustrates us about the equality of Islam. Eid is a sorrow, and this is additionally a definition of the same word. It is cited in Hadith - "Eid is not a matter

of festival for those who didn't fast during the month of holy Ramadan. Wore new clothes, used fragrant items; rather Eid bears a cautionary message of punishment for these people, these people should be repent for their misdeeds and also make a pledge in this manner that they will not indulge in evil activities anymore" from this declaration the immense importance here laid. The essential happiness of Eid-ul-Fitr only for those people who practice the fasts generally, Eid is for them who went hard practice; who materialized all the principals of the holy Ramadan make the best of this precious chance and form a special progress spiritually, due to this they hold a reason to be happy; thus, the word 'Eid commonly conveys a happiness that is recommended every year since Muslims cooperatively are anticipated to perceive the fast. This day, in the Muslim world, emerges rejoicing and harmony. The happiness is not, yet, at the departure of the month of Ramadan; it is the joy which Muslims feels subsequent to successfully accomplishing a meaningful task. Important prayers during Ramadan

W

ith majority things in Islam, for instance approaching for the spiritual pilgrimage of Hajj or even praying the five daily prayers, fasting begins with assembling a dua or prayer for meaning to fast, which is known as the niyyat. This prayer fulfils as a perception to God which you propose with your heart and soul to fast during the holy month of Ramadan for His pleasure. This can also be accomplished once before the month starts, or it is advised to be done every morning just before suhoor, which is the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins. There are ten important prayers during the period of Ramadan. These are consist of the following: PRAYER FOR BREAKING THE FAST One of the significant prayers of Ramadan is the one which is done just before breaking your fast. Fasting does no end without this prayer is quoted as: “Allahuma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizq-ika aftarthu.” Which means; “Oh Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You [and I put my trust in You] and I break my fast with your sustenance.”

PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS Ramadan is a time when Muslims are told through the Qur’an and in hadiths that God will absolve them of their sins if they engage in sincere worship and repentance. The following prayer is a good one to recite during Ramadan to ask for Allah’s forgiveness: “Allahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika al-lati wasi’at kulli shay’in an taghfira li.” That is, “Oh Allah, I ask you by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me.” This is a prayer that Abdullah ibn Amar, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, used to recite as he was breaking his fast, as reported by Ibn abi Mulaykah. TARAWEEH PRAYERS There are infinite prayers that Muslims recite during Ramadan, ones from the Qur’an, ones from hadiths, and others that companions of the Prophets and Islamic scholars recited. But a special type of prayer exclusive to the month of Ramadan are taraweeh prayers, which are special prayers said at night after breaking fast with physical movements akin to those Muslims do during their five daily prayers. In taraweeh prayers, a hafiz, or one who has memorized the Qur’an, recites MAY 2018

one chapter of the Qur’an each night while followers stand behind and pray along. Over the course of Ramadan, the Qur’an is recited in its entirety, one chapter at a time. As reading the Qur’an, is highly recommended during Ramadan, attending taraweeh prayers is a great way to absorb the virtues of the Qur’an in a congregational setting. PRAYERS OF ZIKR Zikr, or prayers recited over and over again in the remembrance of God, is often thought to be part of the Sufi Islamic tradition, when in fact it is an integral part of all Muslims’ lives and especially important during Ramadan. A great way to connect with God while doing all the mundane chores of daily life (driving, waiting in line, preparing the evening meal), is to recite over and over these short phrases: Subhan’allah, an expression used by Muslims to express strong feelings of joy or relief and recalls how everything Muslims have is thanks to Allah. Alhamdulillah, or “Praise be to God!” (It is a Qur’anic exclamation with a similar meaning as hallelujah.) Astaghfirullah, which means “I seek forgiveness from God.” Allahu Akbar, or “God is the

Greatest.” PRAYER FOR THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF RAMADAN Muslims scholars agree that Ramadan is such a holy month that any sort of prayer, whether it is a personal one from your heart or one from the Qur’an or other Islamic sacred texts, will surely be received by Allah and the rewards for those prayers will be numer-

ous. But the Prophet Muhammad did recommend Muslims to recite certain du’as at particular times during Ramadan. For example, during the first 10 days of the months, reciting the following prayer provides extra benefits: “Rabbigh fir war hum wa anta khair ur rahimeen.” Oh my Lord and Sustainer please forgive me and be

merciful to me. You are the best amongst those who show mercy. This prayer, which is from the Qur’an, was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad to be recited as much as possible during the second 10 days of Ramadan for maximum rewards and forgiveness of sins. Oh Allah indeed you are the greatest pardoner and you like the act of pardoning. Hence, please forgive us.

This particular prayer was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad to be recited during the last 10 days Ramadan as much as possible. It beseeches God to forgive us, because God is indeed the best at forgiving humans for their mistakes. “Astaghfirullaha rabbi min kulli zambin wa atabu ilaih.” I seek forgiveness of all my sins from Allah who is my lord and sustainer and I return

back in repentance to him alone. As beneficial all prayers are during Ramadan, any prayers recited on Laylat Al Qadr, or “The Night of Power,” receive the most reward. Laylat Al Qadr is one of the holiest nights of Ramadan. The night is commemorated as when the Prophet Muhammad received

the first revelation of the Qur’an. Most mosques try and complete the recitation of the Qur’an on Laylat Al Qadr, and it is recommended for Muslims to attend taraweeh prayers at their local mosque on this night. Muslims often try to spend the entire night in prayer, reciting surahs from

the Qur’an and all sorts of prayers and supplications, whether personal or from scripture. The importance of prayer and devotion on this night is unimaginable, as the Qur’an calls this night “better than a thousand months.” The key to praying during Ramadan, is praying sincerely with all your heart and soul.

What are the

justifications for fasting

in Ramadan?

T

he reasons for fasting in Ramadan are innumerable, however in this article, I present 10 powerful reasons for fasting in Ramadan. By consciously aligning your intention with these 10 reasons for fasting in Ramadan, you position yourself to get the most out of this divine spiritual practice, and so to truly progress in your personal growth and spiritual evolution. At present, nearly two billion human beings on planet earth are counted among the Islamic faith, and fasting in Ramadan is a unique annual event shared by a large percentage of Muslims in what is undoubtedly one of the most profound global spiritual experiences in the world. While in reality the rewards for fasting in Ramadan are countless and its full benefits

known only to God, the following are ten very important reasons for fasting in Ramadan, and why Muslims are encouraged to take advantage of this unique social and spiritual experience. PILLAR OF ISLAM The foundation of Islamic spiritual practice is known as the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis for a spiritual culture designed to provide an ideal environment for personal growth and spiritual evolution. Fasting in Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, constituting one of the most valuable spiritual practices designed to empower a human being in overcoming the self and transcending the ego, the one true veil between a human being and his or her Creator. SPIRITUAL PURIFICATION One of the primary benefits of fasting in Ramadan is spiritual purification, the

MAY 2018

essential goal of Islamic Spirituality. Although we tend to think of the mind, body and spirit as separate components, in reality they are all connected and interrelated, and improvement in any one naturally effects improvement in the others as well. Fasting in Ramadan purifies the mind, body and spirit, leading to greater clarity, sensitivity and health. HEALH It has now been scientifically documented and demonstrated that one of the most effective factors in improving human health and longevity is the reduction of intake and consumption. Fasting in Ramadan allows the digestive system, the engine of the body, to rest from the normal demands of processing and breaking down food, freeing up system resources to cleanse and purify the body of accumulated toxins, thereby allowing more effective healing and tissue repair. Fasting in Ramadan keeps the body healthy and youthful (provided one does not overindulge when breaking fast). FAMILY AND COMMUNITY One of the greatest benefits and reasons for fasting in Ramadan is renewing solidarity and cultivating positive relationships with one’s family

and community. Only one who observes fasting in Ramadan can truly know the beauty and joy of breaking fast with others, celebrating the gift of life daily for thirty days with loved ones. Fasting in Ramadan is truly one of the greatest social experiences a human being will ever have, and this is one of the most important aspects of this unique pillar of Islamic practice. GRATITUDE It’s true that one generally does not realize what he or she has until it’s gone or not available, and by fasting in Ramadan, Muslims become acutely aware of the unlimited abundance of divine favour God Almighty has blessed humanity with, particularly with regards to sustenance. The cultivation of gratitude is a core purpose of Islam, and few spiritual practices cultivate gratitude as does fasting

in Ramadan! EMPATHY AND COMPASSION Although we live in a world of natural abundance, of divine grace and providence, unfortunately due to a lack of empathy, compassion and solidarity among human beings, there are many throughout the globe who still struggle with hunger, poverty, lack and scarcity. When a Muslim observes fasting in Ramadan, he or she feels the hunger that many experience daily as a normal consequence of their circumstances. By fasting in Ramadan, we develop the holy qualities of empathy and compassion, becoming more aware of our intrinsic connection and oneness with all human beings regardless of borders or labels that create artificial separation among the citizens of the human race.
