why this concept for the book?
I wanted to write about something that I wanted to learn more about, and that was a big enough subject to fill a book. Therefore, I ended up writing about classification. I didn’t want to use pictures in my book.
my grid structure
Divided into 6 columns. Used 2-4 columns for each block of text. Didn’t really use a grid horizontally; I had a lot of the things in the center of the page, and made sure thing were aligned with each other. Margins: - Top 15mm - Inside 25 mm - Bottom & outside 20 mm
point size of typefaces
Lone Letters size 30 for headings
Minion Pro regular 10 pt black on white pages, Minion pro semibold 10 pt on coloured pages Avenir size 10 for page numbers (also used on front page).
what i’ve learned
Do more research! Orphaned words. Styles in InDesign. How to use Grids in InDesign. How to use a page like Blurb. Triple check everything... Consistency. Aligning. How important white space is. That InDesign has spell check!
what i would change
I used way to much time on the text in the book, and rewriting things – and not enough time on the actual design. Do research on design that streches over two pages. I actually wanted to try it, but was afraid to mess up, since it’ s my first book and I didn’t have a clue of what i was doing. Work more on my cover. Wish I modified a sans serif typeface instead; I feel like I would have been more free to design how I wanted it then. The orange colour in the beginning and end of my book. Mostly because I kind of hate orange.
