History of the Robert G. Hamilton Memorial Library That is the correct name of the Library located in the Activity Center. Your Library. How did that come about? Previous to 1995 the space now occupied by your Library had many different uses.

Kay Sullivan has been a busy bee! She has painted our halls, hung new rods for our quilts and a new shelf for our Crafters to display some of their projects. The Parkinson family has donated a table in memory of their mother Virginia who was one of our first Bookends. The quilts are a wonderful decoration to the hall.

In the earliest years of the resort the ‘front’ room had been a grocery store that sold staple items, fishing gear and paper goods. The two back rooms were originally set up as a small café and seating area that served hot dogs and other simple menu items. Next time you’re in the Library look for the patio door and the single door that lead out to the pool. When the “El Café”(as it was called) closed down the rooms served as storage areas and craft rooms. Then in 1989 the ‘front’ room was developed as the community’s mail room, with the mailboxes behind the counter. By 1995 the mailbox area had been moved next door next to the Activity desk. Not wanting to completely abandon the ‘front’ room it was converted to a video machine room and storage area for Trash & Treasure items. Did I mention there already was a Library in the Resort? In the 1980’s it was a small area on the second floor with a few shelves (now it’s the President’s office). Anyone could take or leave donated books. There was no system and the random use made it quite unorganized (in other words “a mess”). The Library concept along with the construction of the original shelves was developed by a resident that loved books. He was an avid reader and Oil Industry Educator before he moved here with his wife Marieta. His name? You guessed it, Robert G. Hamilton. In April of 1995 new residents, Rowdy and Judy Voss settled in the Resort. Seeing the need for a more accessible and better organized Library, Judy asked Board Member Margaret Hunnicutt if she would ask the Board for permission to set up the Library in the seldom used video game room. Of course the Board wanted to know where the start up money would come from. No problem, Margaret came back to the next meeting with a $5,000 check that Marietta Hamilton and her children donated in memory of the now late Dr. R. G. Hamilton. Marietta also donated 700 books from their family library. However, because of their classroom subject matter many of these books were then donated to the University of Texas in Brownsville. The Library now had funding, a room, a head Librarian and the blessing of the Board. Lumber was purchased and another resident, a contractor, Don Davis, donated his time to build the shelves located in the “Front” room. Volunteers painted all the shelves and organized the books and the Library opened its doors in 1996.. I’ll stop here, but this is not the end of the transformation to the “Library” as we know it today. This story will continue in your next Newsletter.
