PROGRESSION WEEK 2022 For Progression Week 2022 we held two main events and activities which took place across different departments. On 12 July approximately 250 parents registered for an online event on The Regional Economy bringing together representatives of the growth sectors in the region including Health and Social Care, Life Sciences, Green Jobs, Agri-Tech, Construction, and Engineering. We included two CEOs amongst the speakers. Laura Guymer of Growth Works with Skills gave an overview and highlighted the importance of apprenticeships as a viable pathway into many occupations with a shortage of skills. Around 40 slides packed with information were shared with parents alongside a recording of the event which will enable parents to have informed discussions with students about jobs and careers.

On Wednesday, 13th July we welcomed 30 companies to the second careers fair at Long Road in the space of three months. Companies ranging from childcare to engineering took over the Library Resource Centre and there was a steady stream of students and teachers throughout the day engaging with employers and learning about the careers on offer. Departments organised workplace visits and talks including one by entrepreneur Alex Hughes speaking to Business and Economics students and a group of Chemistry students visited Eurofins Chemtest in Newmarket, a global leader in bio-analytical testing. Students also experienced a day in the life of a Technology Consultant at TTP in Melbourn, organised by Cambridge LaunchPad.

PROGRESSION WEEK 2022 Many other departments organised their own events and workshops including Applied Sport students using Unifrog to find out about different careers and pathways. Activities also occur outside of Progression Week including aspiring medical students taking a Saturday out to attend practical workshops such as laparoscopic skills and suturing, a mentoring session and inspirational talks organised by the Royal College of Surgeons at Addenbrookes Hospital, which was very well received by those who took part. We also offered Mock Interview workshops with Form the Future, in which students met real life employers and practiced their interviewing skills. We continue to work with our partners Career Ready who support Applied Science students with visits to workplaces and

Form the Future which provides support across the whole range of careers activities. We are continuing to extend the use of our careers platform, Unifrog, which all students can access and use to help them discover more about their skills and strengths, research careers, create university, job, and apprenticeship shortlists, and record all their extra-curricular activities. From next year we will introduce new ways for students to collaborate and address issues such as climate change and to get involved in volunteering and community activities. We will also offer a workshop on building a profile on LinkedIn as social media becomes an increasingly important way for students to market themselves to employers.

CAREERS E-MAGAZINE Did you know our Careers and Progression team publishes a fortnightly Careers E-mag full of content relevant to Long Road students, including topical articles and progression advice covering University, Apprenticeships, Further Education and Gap Years. CAMBRIDGE INSPIRED ART Being so closely located to the beautiful centre of Cambridge made for a wonderful research afternoon for our art students! Our Year 1 Level 3 Art and Design Extended Diploma students took the opportunity to draw, photography and gain inspiration for their Year 2 projects. Starting in Cambridge Market, Kings Parade and into Coe Fen, ending up at Little St Mary’s Church; the trip focused on different areas of Cambridge where we were able to take various photographs as well as observational drawings of the areas we visited. Students on the trip shared their thoughts about the day... "I personally found this trip very helpful and inspiring, having the teachers to guide us to different places helped me focus on each different area but equally we had

a lot of freedom about what we wanted to draw and where the best place to sit down was. This trip gave me confidence for the start of my unit and I was able to take many photographs and drawings that I am proud of" Rebecca "Our trip into Cambridge was an excellent way to commence the new project. It allowed me to make a collection of at least 100 photographs to carry into unit 4, decay and regeneration." Rhona "I found the day to be very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed drawing from primary observation as this is a skill I had not practiced much prior. Overall the I found the trip to be an amazing start to the project and a great starting point for my ideas and imagery" - Lloyd

STUDENTS FOCUS ON FAKE NEWS IN NATIONAL ART EXHIBITION Last month saw the launch of Planet Future, an online exhibition of pictures created by sixth form college students. The exhibition showcases students’ creative interpretation of the challenges facing the environment, and their reflections on the sustainability agenda. More than 180 students from 64 colleges submitted their artwork for the exhibition that runs until 21st July 2022. The exhibition is being co-ordinated by the Sixth Form Colleges Association and all pictures can be viewed on the SFCA gallery website here. Alex Burghart MP, Minister for Skills, said: “SFCA’s Planet Future exhibition highlights the extraordinary artistic talent in the

sixth form college sector. My congratulations go to all the students involved. The sustainability agenda has never been more important, and the exhibition highlights students’ hopes and fears about the future, while also showcasing their enormous creativity and innovation.” Congratulations to Long Road students whose work was featured in the exhibition! OPEN AIR EXHIBITION 2021/22 A cold and rainy November morning was certainly been brightened up earlier this year by the installation of the new artwork in our Open Air Exhibition! Our Open Air Exhibition features work from students across our creative arts department; including graphic designers, photographers and artists. You can come and view their work for FREE when you visit us for your Applicant Welcome Day, just check out the large artwork across our campus entrance. We refresh our Open Air Exhibition annually for all of out staff, students and visitors to enjoy. Each year teachers from across all of our creative arts subjects select their favourite pieces of student work, before

our Principal makes the final decision on who to feature in the display. The installation of the final chosen artwork is an exciting time for all of the subjects! Artwork showcased in the previous 2 years Open Air Exhibitions is dotted across the college campus, so take a stroll and find your favour piece. Huge thank you to our Art Technician and our Photography Technician, for helping us bring this project to life; and of course massive thanks to our wonderfully talented students for allowing us to display your work!

LONG ROAD STUDENT INSPIRES COMMUNITY WITH LOCKDOWN ART PROJECT Maggie Powell, Level 4 Foundation Art and Design student, didn't let lockdown stop her from getting creative and inspiring others in her local community to use their free time to explore their artistic talents! Before moving to remote learning, Maggie was working on her Final Major Project, planning to create a window display for some office space in central Cambridge. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 lockdown put a stop to all of Maggie’s hard work – however she didn’t let this dishearten her! Rather than waiting to pick her project up again after lockdown, Maggie set about adapting her Final Major Project.

“The tile project, like my FMP, was inspired by my trip to Lisbon in January where I discovered the work of Joana de Abreu. A Portuguese artist who replaces the missing tiles of the city with her own colourful versions. So I recruited and updated my local community via Facebook and Instagram to make some tiles of their own. The idea was to give my community something to occupy themselves with for the first month of lockdown. Then create a display of the artwork for them to continue to enjoy. The owner of our local pub, The Rose and Crown kindly agreed to let me display the tiles outside. It is in the centre of the village and the walls are on show to everyone."

DRAMA & THEATRE A LEVEL The Drama and Theatre Studies course is taught in excellent purpose-built facilities which include rehearsal rooms and a fully functional black box theatre. The main focuses of the course are the development and interpretation of theatre and live performance. The course offers a professional theatre approach with preparation for students considering studying Acting or Drama at either university or major acting schools. Students will have the benefit of working with industry trained staff and practitioners within the department that have a wide range of skills. In addition to the academic course, we also offer a wide range of performance enrichment activities such as LAMDA Acting

Exams. The LAMDA Level 3 Certificate in Performance: Acting is designed to enable learners to develop a wide range of acting skills. Learners will perform their chosen scenes from memory, integrating their knowledge and skills to demonstrate a mature understanding of the material; combining physical and vocal flexibility to support and inform characterisation and engage the audience. We also support students in taking part in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RAMDA) Shakespeare Awards. The RADA Shakespeare Awards aim to develop an understanding of Shakespeare’s texts and characters, communication of performance, words, emotions and ideas and creative flexibility, confidence and reflection on the work.

DT STUDENT WINS JAPANESE DESIGN COMPETITION! Huge congratulations to Louis Byrne, Year 2 DT A Level student, who recently won a Japanese design competition and his artwork had now been produced commercially and is available as a product! Louis got in touch to tell us all about the competition… "The competition I entered was a Japanese competition called, ‘

お でかけポーチねおデザインコン テスト’ or ‘Nendroid Pouch Neo Design Contest’ which is the English title.

It was hosted by a company called ‘ Good Smile Company ‘ which is a Japanese figurine and merchandise company and the task was to design a new design to add to their ‘Nendroid Pouch

Neo’ product line up, which is basically like a case for their figurines to be able to display/carry them. We were given a template to draw out our designs and the 2 chosen winners would have their design become an actual product. I was also able to talk with the company/manufacturer about how I wanted the final thing to look and give feedback on the prototypes, although not in person obviously! The prototype was shown off at an exhibition thing called ‘WONDERFUL HOBBY LIFE FOR YOU!!’ which is hosted by the company and other figurine manufacturers in Akihabara, Japan."

BAR GROISMAN DANCE WORKSHOP Back at the start of the year our Musical Theatre students were lucky enough to taker part in a dance workshop on-campus led by professional dance artist, and former Long Road student, Bar Groisman. Bar studied the BTEC Performing Arts course at Long Road from 2014-2016 and is now a Cambridge based dancer, choreographer, writer and founder of the dance theatre company Sababa Co. Bar worked with a group of students on material related to her company’s new piece ‘Coiled Up’.

It was great to have Bar back in the Studio again, sharing her experiences of Long Road and what she has gone on to achieve since leaving here. The students found the workshop really interesting and we can’t wait to invite Bar back for more workshops and progression talks.

LONG ROAD PHOTOGRAPHY SUPERSTARS! The last few years have certainly been very challenging for us all, but our A Level Photography students let nothing stand in the way of getting creative! We couldn't be prouder of our students who were so proactive and successful in both local and national photographic competitions over lockdown. Student Imogen Cox was a winner in the photography competition run by Churchill College, Cambridge. Her portrait was selected as it represented life in lockdown. The next triumph was when photography student, Dan Starling, won first prize in the young photographer competition run jointly by the Rotary Club and

Cambridge Camera Club. Student Lexi Howard also gained a commendation for her entry into the competition. Recently, six of our photography students were successful after being shortlisted for a national photography competition run by London Metropolitan University. The judges, who included professional photographers and lecturers at the university, commented on the quality of their images.
