A warm welcome back to Long Road! We hope you all had a wonderful summer. For those of you who are new, here’s a brief summary of what to expect from the Student Services Newsletter this year:

We know that for roughly half of you reading this you have only just started at Long Road. We know that this can be daunting, and it can take some time to adjust. So we thought it would be a good idea to tell you a bit about ourselves and some other departments and what they can do for you!

Student Services

We are Student Services, a friendly team here to help you during your time at Long Road. You can find us at Reception, the helpdesk in the Student Centre, and the desk in the Progress Coach area.

We provide support for a number of services, including things such as:

Progress Coaches

As you find your feet here at Long Road, your Progress Coach will always be here to keep a close eye on how you ’ re getting on. They will have regular Progress Review meetings with you to help you stay on track and give you the support you need. You will have a weekly 45 minute tutorial with them covering topics like: Job and university applications Writing a CV Society and philosophy Politics and voting

Additional Learning Support

Feeling anxious or overwhelmed? Maybe you ’ re struggling with your workload? Don’t worry, Long Road has you covered. Our wonderful Additional Learning Support team will work alongside you to make sure you can achieve to your highest potential. Offering 1 to 1 support with both quiet and lively work areas, our team specialise in helping students with a variety of needs. Click here for more info.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing Appointments ��

Lisa Verrier is our wonderful Student Wellbeing Engagement Co-ordinator. She offers 1 to 1 appointments with students who are facing personal challenges. By clicking the picture, you can arrange an appointment at a time that suits you so help is always there when you need it.

Did you know that you can get period products for free at Long Road? They can be found in:

You can also get free sexual health products at Long Road! You can sign up for a C-Card here or at local youth organisations and pharmacies. Bring your C-Card for discrete collection from: Wellbeing Offices (C4, C6, & C9)

First Aid ��

At Long Road we have a number of staff who are first aid trained. If you or someone you know are ever in need of first aid assistance, not matter how big or small, you can go to Reception and ask.

What’s On?

We have a plethora of exciting enrichment opportunities at Long Road with something that should interest everyone. Please keep in mind that some clubs may not be up and running yet, but we expect that all will be available from after the October half term. Some clubs are still to be confirmed (TBC).

The Long Lens ��

The Long Lens is Long Road’s very own film magazine, and has been going strong since 2020. Whether you ’ re an aspiring filmmaker, a seasoned critic, or simply a cinephile, there’s something

inside for everyone. You can now access all the previous editions on Issuu, including the latest edition which dropped in July. They’re always on the lookout for passionate writers to join the team, so if you’d like to be involved email Andrea at ajoyce@longroad.ac.uk.

Sports Facilities

There are so many high quality sports and fitness facilities available at Long Road. Whether you ’ re interested in a football scholarship, team sports, casual sports, gym sessions, or wellbeing fitness, there is something available for everyone.

Code Orange ��

Spooky season is nearly upon us, and we thought it would be fun to highlight Halloween-themed clubs. Learn about how to make your own slasher film at Slasher School, including creating realistic gore using make-up, special effects editing, and much more. Calling all trainers! The brand new Pokémon Card Game Club is here. If you are interested in Pokémon or other card-based games, come to E3 Thursday lunchtimes.

Feminist Society

Duke of Edinburgh

The prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is now available at Long Road. DofE is a brilliant way to make new friends, learn new skills, and make a difference in our community.

The Gold Award is comprised of four sections; Physical, Skills, Volunteering, and Expedition, and also includes a residential trip where you will be spending four days and three nights camping in wild countryside.

The Feminist Society is a vibrant and inclusive community that strives for gender equality and empowerment. It provides a safe space for all genders to come together to advocate for women's rights. Participate in activism, education, and support the society towards making Long Road more equitable for everyone. More information coming soon!

Upcoming Events

Multicultural Society

For the last two years Long Road has had a Multicultural Society. This is a club set up and run by students with the aim to share and appreciate the beautiful things our different cultures have to offer. The society also organises Culture Day which has previously taken place in the spring and summer terms. Multicultural Society starts this week and takes place every other Tuesday lunchtime in D106/ D107. Come by and say buenos dias!

Wellbeing Fair

The Wellbeing Fair will be taking place again this year! Come by and pet our therapy dogs, find out about support for a variety of things, and do fun mindfulness activities. Keep an eye on your emails for updates.

Careers Events

Our careers team will be running the annual Careers Fair on 21st November 2024. In previous years we ’ ve had law firms, the prison service, chartered accountants, sports providers for secondary schools, and more. Come by and discover your career path!

International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day was first celebrated in 1967 and takes place on the 8th of September. The day highlights the importance of literacy, with an estimated 775 million people lacking basic literacy skills. Below are some recommendations about the importance of literacy, which can all be found at the Cambridge Central Library.

On the following page are some recommendations from our LRC, who made a successful bid to Lit In Colour who provide free books written by non-white authors.

Matilda is the story of an extremely smart girl who sees the value of education. Unfortunately, her parents are self-centred and unsupportive and her headteacher literally throws children!

Dune It Ends With Us

Genre: Science Fiction

Prominent journalist and LGTBQ+ activist George M Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, from getting his teeth kicked out by bullies to flea marketing with his beloved grandmother, and his first sexual relationships. On the desert planet Arrakis a noble family is tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is a life-extending drug called “spice” coveted throughout the universe.

VR Suite

At Long Road we are lucky to have a suite full of VR headsets. These have a number of applications, and you can book a time to use them via the QR code or by emailing careers@longroad.ac.uk.

Biodiversity Club

In 2022, the Biodiversity Club planted over 100 indigenous trees on the Long Road campus. These were provided by the Woodland Trust, and were planted to increase biodiversity and work towards our aim to become a net-zero organisation. Now the team is looking for staff and students to help with the upkeep of the young trees. Email fgutierrez@longroad.ac.uk for more info.

Student Night

Student Night at the Grand Arcade takes place on 9th October from 3-8pm. Get discounts for one night only, get freebies, play
