The recent State of the Workforce Luncheon was a resounding success, celebrating the companies awarded the prestigious Red Apple Awards, sponsored by Cynergy Technologies and Studio Grace Pilates & Barre. This event highlighted the critical role businesses play in promoting literacy and education within our community.
As we reflect on this celebration, it’s essential to explore how parents can further engage in improving literacy rates among children in Longview. Currently, only 46% of students in Longview schools read at grade level, posing a significant challenge to our future workforce. Here are several impactful ways you can contribute:
1. Read with Your Children:
Dedicate just 30 minutes each day to read with your child. This simple yet powerful practice can exponentially enhance their literacy skills. Use this time to unwind together and make it part of their bedtime routine. For more insights on the benefits of reading to children, check out this Healthline article.
2. Get a Library Card:
A library card opens a world of resources at the Longview Public Library, including access to physical books and digital subscriptions. The library also sponsors rewarding programs for young readers, providing prizes for completing books. Sign up at the Longview Public Library today!
3. Volunteer at Your Child’s School:
Show your child the importance of reading by actively participating in their education. Read to them at home and consider volunteering at their school to read to classmates. This demonstrates your commitment to literacy and sets a positive example.
4. Support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library:
In collaboration with the Greater Longview United Way, the Imagination Library delivers age-appropriate, high-quality books to registered children aged birth to five in Gregg County at no cost. This initiative aligns with the National Assessment of Educational Progress, emphasizing the importance of having books at home for academic success. To sign up or learn more, visit longviewunitedway.org/dpil or contact Dr. Evan Dolive, Executive Director, at edolive@longviewunitedway.org.
