Julius Burkett heart care success story
GRATEFUL. “THANKS TO LONGVIEW REGIONAL, I’M BACK TO MY LIFE.” When Julius Burkett was diagnosed with a heart rhythm disorder, his cardiologist referred him to Dr. Jorge Massare at Longview Regional. “He said he was pretty sure he could help me,” Julius says. “I trusted Dr. Massare completely.” He performed a procedure to correct Julius’ condition, and the staff took great care of him the entire time. “The nurses were really nice. Longview Regional is an excellent hospital,” he states. Since the procedure, Julius is feeling better and back on the farm. “The only thing I haven’t tried is cutting firewood – yet,” he says. Strategy Breeds Success
A
s your Chamber prepares to close out another fiscal year, I reflect back over the many powerful accomplishments we Kelly Hall have experienced. The President/CEO purposeful activities and strategies led by the board of directors over the past several years continue to breed success after success. In 2014 we experienced another successful InterCity trip with over 30 business and community leaders to learn best practices of how to move our community’s redevelopment process forward. The Washington D.C. trip last spring was powerful as well. Our leadership team was able to visit with key agencies and elected officials on significant issues that impact our business community’s ability to be successful. In June we celebrated with two of our local businesses, Baxter Clean Care and Cynergy Technology, as they were recognized by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce as two of the top 100 businesses in the country. Most recently, it was exciting to see our organization once again recognize emerging leaders. It truly is energizing to hear the stories and learn about how the young professionals in our community are identifying what they are passionate about and their willingness to be part of making a difference. While there are many more examples to share about the intentional work of your chamber, one of the common threads that runs through each program/event is relationships. Moving our community forward requires us to seek your guidance and utilize your personal and professional experiences. Your input helps us remain objective so we can properly assess the organization’s strengths and weaknesses. Your input ensures our ability to remain focused on what is important to you and your business. More importantly, your feedback helps us understand the behaviors that must be modified or enhanced so we can develop the leadership skills to prepare for the future. We are counting on you this next year to help us continue to move in the right direction as we strive to achieve a stronger, more sustainable and prosperous local economy and improved quality of life in Longview. “Leading Longview. People. Place. Prosperity.” is the Chamber’s 2014 – 2016 strategic plan—to support existing businesses while creating jobs and the high quality opportunities Longview has to offer. By leveraging our many strengths, we believe we can improve the local economy and further enhance quality of life for Longview residents.

Leadership Development - Why, What, How!
C
hambers of Commerce were started to help businesses find solutions for creating a business climate that will breed success. Chambers also advocate on behalf of their membership. In all this, the development of leaders and leadership skills is key to moving a Chamber forward. Some of the initiatives for leadership development adopted by the Chamber are: • The Woman’s Leadership Council which comprises about four sessions per year. The Chamber looked for where there were gaps and saw a need to train women to reach the executive level in our community. It’s purpose is to foster an environment that will prepare women to advance. • The Business Development series focuses on personal and professional development: how an employee can excel in their position and take advantage of advancement opportunities. This year, 2015, will include sessions from Glen Shepherd, and Bill Drury. Also offered will be “Today Matters” by John Maxwell which offers 12 decisions and disciplines—he calls it his daily dozen— that can be learned and mastered by any person to achieve success. • Leadership development also includes the effort to identify and bring new talent to the forefront. How do we help expose the next class of leaders to our community? Emerging Leaders award program helps to identify under age 40 leaders who are already in position and making a contribution. • Committees are designed to help develop
the skill sets of the individuals who want to transform the community. This is core to our leadership development. • The Leadership Longview program trains individuals in their role as leaders and how to use their skill sets. The mission of Leadership Longview is “to strengthen and transform the community of Longview through a program of leadership development, community study, and involvement.” Through participation in Leadership Longview, graduates become part of a new community resource capable of directing important activities in the community. • Leadership Alumni helps to re-engage and keep past participants connected. The Leadership Alumni program continues the development through interaction with their peer group and through enhanced communication of social media and newsletter which creates a sense of community for this program. • The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own REAL businesses. The Longview Chamber of Commerce is excited to bring YEA! to the Longview Community and to be in partnership in the 2014-2015 year with the Pine Tree Independent School District. What is the best fit to move our chamber forward? What do we need to do and why do we do it? Your chamber is committed to developing leaders to move our community forward. It’s more than giving out maps.

I
From Humble Beginnings
t is amazing what determination and passion can accomplish. R & H Machine embodies the definitive rags to riches American success story. What started as a small one person machine shop, formerly Blalock Machine, has grown into a thriving business with over 26,880 square feet space of climate controlled machine shop and a new 10,000 square foot fabrication facility employing about 45 full time employees. Rae Burrows is the reserved, soft-spoken, owner of R&H Machine and has been in business for 23 years. With his own $3200 investment in 1992 he worked out a deal and purchased Blalock Machine after a tragic accident in the Blalock family. As a single dad he faced this challenge head on, driven to succeed. His workaholic personality kicked in and that small machine shop grew into a thriving business and moved to Kilgore in 1995. After continued expansion, they moved to their current location in 2006 and have added on to that as well. From the first day he opened his door, R & H Machine has had customers, and these customers are loyal to the outstanding service they receive. Their customer base is global, extending to Alaska, South America, the North Sea, Mexico City, Australia, and Dubai, and that is just the start. The core business is maintenance and repair in the oilfield, but that has diversified to insulate them from the volatility of the oilfield market’s mercurial pricing. The primary equipment includes general computer numerical control (CNC) and manual machine shop facility. Services include Manual Finished part ready for assembly. Machining, CNC Turning, CNC Milling, Welding & Fabrication, CNC 3 & 4 Axis Machining, Sawing, and Plasma Machining. In this highly competitive market, their advantage is having a diverse line of equipment and a highly qualified team, capable of machining difficult parts with a quick turnaround time. What typically takes two weeks for a larger manufacturer, R&H can usually complete “in a little while.” Another competitive advantage is their innovation. They build all of the parts and assemble them for Snubco trailers for oil rig sites. Every piece of equipment that rests on the bed of the trailer, from rails to instrument panels to tubing, is manufactured by R & H with Snubco supplying the hydraulics.
6
Longview Progress Report | January - February 2015
Manufacturing time that originally took from 3-4 months to complete has decreased to 3-4 weeks for completion of a Snubco trailer. The manual CNC machines originally required 5 operators and now, with automation, they use only 3, thereby decreasing labor costs.
R & H Machine built snubbing unit mounted on Snubco trailer.
Seeing a need for product improvement, Rae designed and created a new Swivel used for coil tubing. The standard design failed in the field after “tens of hours.” He worked with engineers to create an improved swivel that lasts in the field for hundreds of hours, reducing costs and time. Another competitive advantage is that R & H Machine is R & H designed Swivel one of a very few API certified machine shops in the United States; critical standards for the oilfield. Their motto is customer first, employees second, and the rest comes third. R &H Machine has never had to make a cold call for sales. Their reputation for doing the impossible: quality workmanship on a quick turn has been their calling card. By word of mouth and reputation, the sales and requests continued and still continue to this day. Their customer base is great and Rae believes in taking care of his customers: “if you take care of them, they will take care of you.” Their reputation in the industry is that this is the shop you call when others aren’t answering their phone. When asked what words of wisdom he can pass along to those desiring to start their own business, he jokingly says to “live without sleep.” In seriousness, his advice is that the real things to look for are succeeding at things and overcoming challenges. This company focuses on making parts: some modified from original manufacture to meet the specific needs of the client and some have to be designed from scratch. Rae describes of receiving a broken part that he placed into a bowl to see all of the pieces. He then envisioned how that part Continued to Page 11 www.LongviewChamber.com

The Hayes RV Center Kids Adventure Camp will be filled with hands on learning activities provided by the Gregg County 4-H Club; from hatching chickens, to making a garden in a glove, to learning about how everyone plays a role in agriculture. The whole family will enjoy a day at the Boat & RV Show. Event chairperson Amanda Traywick pointed out, “Some of the positive changes we have made in recent years include the 4-H Kids Adventure Camp sponsored by Hayes RV. The Gregg County Ag Extension office does an outstanding job entertaining and educating our youngest visitors while mom and dad shop for boats and RVs from local dealers. It is important to the Chamber of Commerce to make this event as family friendly as possible, allowing children 12 and under be admitted free of charge.” The Boat & RV Show fits the Longview area perfectly. We are an active community that values its outdoor recreation and supports locally owned and operated businesses. Whether it is to shop for a new boat, RV, ATV or to just look around, The Boat & RV Show is an event you won’t want to miss. Presented By:

Downtown Face-Lift
I
f you take a trip to Downtown Longview, you will discover something new and unique. One of the vacant buildings on Tyler Street has received a face-lift. On Tuesday, December 2nd, crews from Sign Pro installed three-dimensional window decals to 101 W. Tyler; this is only the second installation of its kind in the state of Texas. This initiative was started by Longview Main Street to improve the aesthetics of Downtown Longview. Purchasing the decal will provide awareness of available properties in Downtown and give a vision of what the property could look like if it were re-designed or renovated. Tom Eberhart is the property owner and was instrumental in the completion of this downtown project. Without his partnership, Main Street would not have been able to fulfill their vision of finding owners for vacant buildings within the district. The project was funded by the Color up 5K Fun Run that was held in November at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex. Five dollars of each registration was donated to Longview Main Street from the November run. If this project is a success, Main Street will plan on covering another window within the district. This will not only help with the look of Downtown, but will successfully share the vision and mission of One Hundred Acres of Heritage.

Lighting the Way
H
as it been a year since you’ve had a chance to connect with the professional you met at last year’s annual banquet? Does it seem like 2014 has flown by and you’re not sure how you should begin 2015? The Longview Chamber Banquet, presented by Citizens National Bank, is THE place to start. Approximately 700 members attend this event annually, and it’s the place to kick off your year of success! The evening will begin at 5:30 pm on January 13 at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex with a reception sponsored by Turn-Tex Machine and Tool, Inc. Guests will enjoy connecting with veteran members, as well as meeting new chamber members, who will display their goods and services around the reception area. Following the reception, guests will make their way into the banquet room to enjoy dinner and learn how the Chamber is Lighting the Way for 2015. From how your chamber is working with government on behalf of your business needs to the creation of the Business Solutions Conference, you will not want to miss the kick-off of this exciting initiative. This year’s keynote address will be given by David Thomas. In a challenging and upbeat manner, he will address the timeless, yet timely, virtue of integrity. David will enlighten attendees about how integrity is important to today’s workplace. He will also share how integrity can be maintained when those around us operate differently. A feature to the evening’s events will include the presentations of awards. The recipient of the 2014 Manufacturer of the Year is Energy Weldfab, Inc. Over the last 25 years, the company’s quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction have led the recently experienced growth. With a manufacturing area totaling over 180,000 square feet, Energy Weldfab, Inc. has increased their workforce to over 200 employees, who are active in the community through multiple entities. Convergys has been named the 2014 Large Employer of the Year. With over 82,000 employees, working throughout 70 global offices, Convergys provides superior care through innovative technology and insightful analytics. In 1975, the Longview Chamber of Commerce began recognizing individuals who make a positive impact on the community through their volunteer efforts demonstrating creativity, vision, leadership and citizenship. This year’s Chairman’s Award Recipient exemplifies all of these qualities, which is why the choice was clear for Chairman Brad Tidwell to select Dr. Dale Lunsford, President of LeTourneau University. Make plans now to attend this premier event by purchasing a corporate table or individual ticket at LongviewChamber.com or by calling the chamber office at 903-237-4000.

YEA! in the Classroom
E
xciting times are happening with the YEA! program. On November 17th, the Longview Chamber announced the partnership with Pine Tree ISD bringing the Young Entrepreneur Academy (YEA!) into the classroom of high school students. With the collaboration of the two entities, 21 students will have the opportunity to participate in the YEA! program. A Press Conference was held with guests including Superintendent TJ Farler, Mr. Pat Noon (President of PTISD Board of Trustees), Mr. Ken Cunningham, Mr. Allen Morris, Principal Cindy Gabehart, and Mr. Tony Tipton.
The journey of facilitating the Young Entrepreneur program in the classroom during school hours will be a pilot program for us. Recognizing that students are committed to other afterschool programs, this allows the students to still be part of an amazing program with life-changing experiences. These talented students will hear from local community guest lecturers, participate in the annual investor panel, and either an individual or one of the teams will have the opportunity to participate in the Regional Competition in May 2015. These 21 students will graduate the 2014-2015 YEA! program with a business and a community network, while having an opportunity to earn profits.
2014-2015 Young Entrepreneurs Academy Class at Pine Tree High School
Mr. Allen Morris, a faculty member of Pine Tree High School who helps students learn and create experiences for them stated, “High schooler’s know everything. If you look back at people that have done entrepreneurial things, they started in high school with an idea. John Lennon picked up a guitar at 16 years old and a couple of years later was touring the world. High schoolers didn’t listen to voices of authority telling them they couldn’t do something. The expert at anything was once a high school student. They are the fertile minds.” Perfectly stated! www.LongviewChamber.com

New Brochure Promotes Annual Events
T
he Convention and Visitors Bureau has collaborated with Forbes & Butler Creative to develop a new form of promoting our annual events to out of town visitors. We have created a 2015 Annual Events Guide which promotes the annual events that take place in Longview. This new guide will be printed each year and made available to local hotels, restaurants, and attractions as well as distributed at Travel Shows along with our visitor guides. They may also be requested from visitors on our website. This publication will take the place of the monthly calendars which have been distributed in the past. We have worked extensively with Sam Smead Photography and Jim King Photography over the past few years to capture some of the best moments of our local events in their outstanding photos for use in the new brochure. We feel this comprehensive list of events will help attract more visitors to Longview by giving our visitors awareness of the variety of activities and festivals that are available here. This will also make it easier for our guests to plan their travel dates. This new guide will be available the first of January. Persons interested in requesting copies of the guide for distribution in your business are welcome and should be directed to Margie Harris at mharris@longviewtx.com or by calling 903-753-3281. LONGVIEW
his year’s Leadership Longview Class, sponsored by LEDCO, was selected from various slices of Longview’s business community. This class has chosen D.O.R.S. Community Services as this year’s project recipient. They are creating an outdoor classroom with a pergola, tables, chairs and new software for their learning center. A group from the class is also creating a video showing the “dos” and “don’ts” of interviewing for a job. The finished product will be presented to the public at an open house in April. The Leadership Longview class will be attending juvenile court and touring the jail in January as part of Criminal Justice Day sponsored by Springhill State Bank and Westlake Chemical. In February they will learn about our local education system sponsored by Network Communications and Oak Forest Montessori School, and will have the opportunity to join the East Texas Coalition in Austin. Leadership Longview has also seen significant growth with the Alumni Network. Starting in October our e-newsletter, renamed the Alumni Today, has been sent monthly to over 300 graduates. This improved connection has led to an increase in attendance at monthly connection lunches and other events. Since July’s block party we have seen close to 125 of our graduates through our educational and networking opportunities. In early 2015 the Alumni will host a Winter Summit in conjunction with various city leaders to discuss the comprehensive plan and how we can partner together for positive change. R&H Machine, Continued from Page 6 looked intact and designed a replacement. Most parts that come to R&H Machine have to be made from scratch. Having attained success in his life, Rae finds ways to invest in the community. He donated the land next to R&H Machine in order to build a fire station for the community. He emphasizes that the outreach and investments are to give back to the community and are not for personal gain or accolades. He sponsors the Great Texas Balloon Race each year because “that is what you do.” Rae thinks back to 29 years ago when all he had was a paper sack with clothes and nothing else. His drive and determination built him into the success he and his company are today. He doesn’t look at what he is going to receive when giving back: it is not about him. He’ll tell you that is why the company is not named “Rae.” It is about the customer and it is about the community. The final take away from Rae Burrows and R & H Machine was possessing common sense. He advises entrepreneurs to hang on; you only get out of it what you put into it; and Dream Big. It appears that Rae Burrow’s dreams came true. January - February 2015 | Longview Progress Report

Need help writing a grant? People. Place. Prosperity.
ETEDD is designed to aid you with grant research, writing and post-grant administration.
Eligible applicants for and recipients of Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant assistance include a state, city, county, or other political subdivision of a State. For-profit, private-sector entities do not qualify for public works assistance. Economic Development Administration (EDA) will fund up to 90% of the total project costs. When working on an EDA Public Works grant, the East Texas Council of Governments will work closely with the applicant and will write the application for the customer and submit to EDA. We charge 1% for writing grants, and offer post-grant administration as well.
