Orchid Extravaganza On view January 23–March 27 Be wowed this winter by our largest and most diverse display of orchids‌ever. As one of the first plant collections at Longwood, orchids have held a place of distinction since 1922. Our talented horticulturists celebrate the beauty and variety of orchids with an artful display that includes a towering 12-foot-tall archway, our spectacular orchid curtain, and hundreds of vibrant Vanda orchids adorning our Silver Garden. More orchids, more surprises, more living works of art await. See you in the Gardens.

Read. Think. Engage. Join Our Community Read

Get reading this winter as we join with local libraries and our community partners for the third year of our Community Read—a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and start a conversation. As we watch the progress of our Fountain Revitalization Project, we are reminded of the man who created it, Pierre S. du Pont. This one man inspired many people with his vision. Therefore, the powerful idea of ‘one person to inspire many’ is a fitting theme for this year’s Community Read, featuring two inspiring titles, one for adults and one for children.

Get the Books and Start Reading! Available for purchase: The GardenShop, shop.longwoodgardens.org, and major booksellers. Available for borrowing: Most New Castle County, DE, Chester County, PA, Cumberland County, PA, and Delaware County, PA public libraries.

In Grandma Gatewood’s Walk (2014), Ben Montgomery traces the story of an unlikely heroine—a woman who, to escape personal struggles, in 1955, embarks on a journey of several thousand miles of rugged terrain… alone…without any equipment… at the age of 67.

In On Meadowview Street (2007), author Henry Cole tells the story of a little girl, Caroline, who makes a connection with a small flower. That connection grows…and grows, transforming her new neighborhood.

Highlights from Our Gardens Orchid Curtain (1) Orchid Extravaganza marks the return of a fan-favorite orchid spectacle, the orchid curtain. Featuring 250 orchids, including Cattleya hybrids and Phalaenopsis hybrids, the curtain will boast beautiful purple blooms, which are complemented by green foliage. Using a custom frame made in our metal shop, 6-inch pots, and an irrigation system that will simplify the watering process, the curtain is installed in our Exhibition Hall in two days by four or more members of our horticulture staff. The frame is put into place first, then our staff installs the pots of orchids into the frame to create the curtain. Every two weeks of the display, 50 Cattleya orchids will be replaced with newer, fresher plants as these blooms fade. Our staff is excited to bring this beautiful display back, so visit the Exhibition Hall during Orchid Extravaganza to see it in all of its splendor.

Longwood’s International Organ Competition Returns (2) The 2016 International Organ Competition is officially underway! The competition has attracted applicants of the highest level of talent from almost 10 different countries for a chance to win the $40,000 Pierre S. du Pont First Prize, the largest cash prize of any organ competition. In early February, 6 renowned judges will decide the top 10 competitors advancing to the preliminary rounds during the public competition in June. Douglas Cleveland, University of Washington School of Music, Stefan Engels, Southern Methodist University, David Higgs, Eastman School of Music, Christa Rakich, St. Mark the Evangelist Church, Cherry Rhodes, Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California, and Peter

Sykes, Boston University, have been chosen as the 2016 Audition Jury. A separate panel of judges is slated to judge the competition in June, led by Ken Cowan, hailed as one of North America’s finest organists, a graduate of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and current head of the organ program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. The ten finalists will be announced on March 1, 2016. Experience the preliminary and final rounds live—learn more and get tickets at longwoodgardens.org.

Introducing ‘Longwood Chimes Tower’ (3) Don’t miss the newest clivia from Longwood’s breeding program, Clivia miniata ‘Longwood Chimes Tower’. This is the fourth named clivia that will be released from Longwood’s clivia breeding program. ‘Longwood Chimes Tower’ has florets that open with a rich bronze orange color and then fade to red. Red flowers are very desirable in the clivia world, which is why this flower attracts many clivia enthusiasts. The flower is slow to multiply, so only a few plants will be available upon release. This special plant will be on view during the North American Clivia Show, held in Longwood’s Conservatory on March 12–13, 2016. This clivia will be sold in an online auction.

Below the Surface & Behind-theScenes with Our Main Fountain Garden (4) Our Main Fountain Garden Revitalization Project is more than a year underway, and a lot of progress has been made. Most recently, two new tunnel systems were installed in the fall of 2015. The benefit of having the tunnel system is that it provides our staff easy access to service the

Main Fountain Garden out of the view of guests. The tunnels house all of the utility piping, electric, and mechanical systems necessary for running the fountains. The deepest tunnel system connects utilities from the Main Fountain Garden’s upper canal Pump Room and the rectangular basin Pump Room. The second tunnel system provides utility services for the upper canal fountains. Both tunnel systems are 8 feet high and range from 8 to 18 feet wide. Stone restoration and repair work continues as well. We are nearly 70% percent complete with cleaning and repairing the 3,000 pieces of limestone removed from the site and sent to Dan Lepore & Sons, a masonry construction company in Conshohocken, PA. At the warehouse, the stone is being cleaned, evaluated, repaired if needed; and then treated for water and weather exposure. We estimate that the stone will arrive back at the Main Fountain Garden beginning in late winter of 2016. called micropropagation that keeps the new plants free from viruses, which is a common canna problem. Other benefits include the short height making it ideal for container gardening and the unique salmon colored flowers. For Longwood, our aim is, as always, to turn the ordinary into extraordinary through excellence, innovation and passion for our plants and gardens.

Canna ‘Longwood Simply Salmon’ In 1967, Longwood’s Geneticist Dr. Robert Armstrong began breeding cannas. The original goal was to develop a clear yellow-flowered dwarf canna and a pure white-flowered canna that could grow well in the Conservatory. The project started with making crosses involving three cultivars obtained from Ukraine and South Africa. As the project progressed, other cultivars and species were introduced from around the world. Between 1972 and 1985, 12 cultivars were selected for release. Named for local historically significant places and events, these included ‘Brandywine’, ‘Chesapeake’, ‘Conestoga’, ‘Delaware’, ‘Franklin’, ‘Independence’ and ‘Liberty.’ Now, after decades of canna breeding, we are thrilled to announce that Longwood has partnered with PlantHaven International, Inc. and Oglesby Plants International, Inc., to license and distribute our newest cultivar ‘Longwood Simply Salmon’ this spring. This canna cultivar is produced with a special technique

Paul Jacobs Saturday, April 2 8 pm

Latin Grammy-winner Pablo Ziegler, the Buenos Aires-born pianist and composer who helped define the modern tango as pianist for tango master Astor Piazzolla, brings the rich Argentine musical tradition of New Tango into a chamber music setting. A consummate ensemble featuring piano, bandoneon, cello, and double bass, Ziegler’s Quartet for New Tango breathes with nuance and refinement, at once subtle and utterly expressive.

The first and only organist ever to win a Grammy Award, Paul Jacobs, combines a probing intellect and extraordinary technical skills with a repertoire that spans the gamut. Known for his imaginative interpretations and charismatic stage presence, he has also been an important influence in the revival of symphonic music featuring the organ. He will offer an eclectic program which includes music by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and others.
