During our Insider Tours, our expert guides lead you on a walking tour of these areas sharing unique stories and perspectives that celebrate the beauty of our displays. During our Student Exhibition Garden Talks our Professional Gardener students reveal their visions for this year’s Student Exhibition Garden. At Family Story Time, young guests can enjoy nature-based stories in our Lookout Loft Treehouse. Storytelling, songs, and puppets encourage children to discover the joys of nature, language, and literature. Family Story Time is designed for children ages 3–6. In case of inclement weather, the program will meet in the Peirce-du Pont House. Birds of Longwood Tours, Beginner Bird Hikes, American Birding Association Monthly Bird Hikes, Meadow Bluebird Walk, and Meadow Birding Hikes require outdoor clothing and shoes/boots. Binoculars are recommended. Meadow Garden Wildflower Hikes start on our fully accessible Meadow boardwalk introducing you to our beautiful Meadow Garden. From there, you may continue with our wildflower experts on our meadow trails to discover what’s in bloom. During Wonders of the Waterlilies Talks learn about the outdoor display that features a wide variety of aquatic plants from all over the world. Is the class you want sold out? Highlights from Our Gardens New Horticulture In Our Main Fountain Garden

Savor Longwood Seasons: Grapefruit Solstice

(1) While the fountains in our Main Fountain Garden may be taking center stage during the revitalization project, we are also excited about the new horticultural elements of the garden. The horticultural design will complement the European-inspired design of our Main Fountain Garden. Over 2,600 boxwoods (Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Green Beauty') will be planted. The ‘Green Beauty’ variety was chosen for its form, color, and its resistance to Boxwood Blight. The invasive Norway maple trees that were previously in the allee will be replaced with almost 170 deciduous linden trees. These linden trees are native to eastern North America and are beautiful shade trees, which guests are sure to enjoy.

(3) When our Beer Garden opens for a second season on June 9, guests can enjoy a new signature summer brew, Longwood Seasons: Grapefruit Solstice, which was brewed with our own oroblanco grapefruit grown right here in our Conservatory. This brew is a true collaboration between our horticulturists who harvested more than 100 grapefruits, our chefs at 1906 who juiced the fruits and candied the peels, and Victory Brewing Company’s brewers who developed the final product. The brew features German malts and hops paired with American hops and candied grapefruit peel, which results in a crisp, citrusy, and refreshing ale that is light in color and body, but big in summertime flavor.

Million Pollinator Project Prescribed Meadow Burn (2) This past April, we performed a prescribed burn on 31 acres of our Meadow Garden. While meadows are usually thought of as wild spaces that do not need maintenance, they actually require regular attention to ensure they do not naturally succeed into a forest. Fire helps to keep out the invasive plants, enhances native herbaceous plants, and removes the buildup of dead vegetation in the thatch layer. The nutrients released from burning the dead vegetation and unwanted invasive plants helps with the growth and germination of certain plant species and helps to renew the Meadow. This summer, the native plants are coming back stronger than before due to the burn. Read a more in-depth recap and see even more photos on our blog at longwoodgardens.org/blog.

(4) We are proud to be part of the Million Pollinator Project, a nationwide call to action to preserve and create gardens and landscapes that help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators across America. In order to be considered a pollinator garden, the garden must include plants that provide nectar and pollen sources, provide a water source, create large “pollinator targets” of native or non-invasive plants, establish continuous bloom throughout the growing season, and eliminate or minimize the impact of pesticides. Our Meadow Garden is a registered Pollinator Garden for its native plantings, management of invasive species, and support of air, water, and soil quality. To learn more about how you can plant your own pollinator garden, or to register your garden as part of the initiative, visit millionpollinatorgardens.org.
