About this Catalog In this catalog we encourage everyone to explore the science of plants—the reason that gardens and natural lands invite, delight, nourish, and comfort us all. This year, we are focusing on the accomplishments of women in art and horticulture. The cover and section divider pages of the guide feature original cyanotypes created exclusively for Longwood by local artist Sarah Bourne Rafferty. Sarah lives in West Chester, PA and teaches Photography in the Upper School at The Agnes Irwin School. Learn more about the art and science of the cyanotype photographic printing process on page 78.

Choose what best suits you, whether it’s an individual 3-week or 6-week class in plant identification, plant science, or the pursuit of a Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture. Students in the Certificate program can work through a progression of levels, increasing their knowledge and skills. Create your own focus and develop expertise in areas that interest you through a series of requirements. Required courses (to ensure a base level of knowledge) along with electives in plant sciences, plant identification, and horticultural techniques are available for a tailor-made horticulture learning experience.

The plants are arranged by family, including Pinaceae (Pines, Spruce, and Firs), Cupressacease (Arborvitae, Cypress, and Juniper), Taxaceae (Yews), and others, to foster knowledge of specific identification characteristics. This course will focus on the major coniferous genera, highlighting identification, growth patterns, and use in the landscape. Gain a practical and technical understanding of the differences between the asexual and sexual reproduction of plants, the propagation environment, and the techniques used in both home and commercial settings. Discuss propagation techniques including seed hybridization, vegetative cuttings, division, layering, grafting, budding and tissue culture. They provide framework to your garden and contribute as a significant habitat for wildlife. Plant Science: 21st Century Trends: An Enrichment Review

Plant Science: Understanding Plants Online with Jeff Jabco

Fee: $39 for enrichment review in addition to conference registration This class is directed to horticulture professionals as well as continuing education students who are well versed in horticulture. This course can be used to meet the requirement for Plant Science for the Ornamental Horticulture Certificate, Level III. The student will register and attend a day-long conference. A list of annual local conferences is available through the continuing education office. The conference must be pre-approved by the Continuing Education Coordinator. The conference experience will be enriched and evaluated by the post-conference submission of targeted discussion questions to demonstrate the student’s understanding of the topics presented and the implications for their horticultural practices and decision making. A grade of 70% or better is required to receive credit for this course.

Improve your plant identification skills through a study of leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. Look in detail at the methods (morphology) and terminology (nomenclature) used to describe plants throughout the seasons. You will also gain an understanding of the botanical system of plant names and how the plant kingdom is organized. This is important “groundwork” for anyone hoping to become a better gardener. An Appreciation of Plants: IdentiďŹ cation and Use Learn to identify and appreciate commonly used plants on your own schedule. Longwood Gardens is partnering with North Carolina State University to provide a unique fully online survey of plants. This survey will expose you to plants that can be grown throughout the nation. The use and key identifying characteristics of these plants are conveyed through photo stories, presentations, online fact pages, and beautiful images. EC

Landscape Design Gain the design and drawing skills to create exquisite landscapes with ease through our Certificate of Merit in Landscape Design. Whether you are pursuing the entire course series to earn a Certificate of Merit, or just interested in beautifying your property, landscape design courses are available to everyone. Previous knowledge of plant material is strongly recommended and is required for some courses. To earn the Certificate of Merit, the student must satisfactorily complete the following core courses, receiving a minimum grade of 70% in each course. Core course grades will be based on assignments, class projects, and participation. Additionally, three elective courses are required and will be graded on a pass/non-pass basis. To receive credit toward a Certificate, students must complete an assignment. Small class size ensures low student-teacher ratios. Please register early.

You will be introduced to various media, including pencil, ink, colored pencil, marker, pastel, and watercolor, as well as the use of drafting tools. Using these tools and techniques and plenty of in-class practice time will give you the confidence to communicate your design ideas effectively. This is a great first step toward your Certificate in Landscape Design. Highly recommended for anyone with no previous or limited sketching experience and a valuable course to take before Landscape Design I. A materials list will accompany your confirmation email. Using elements from Landscape Design I, create beautiful planting designs with balance, repetition, and cohesiveness. Gain exposure to different garden situations, such as the sunny perennial border or woodland garden while considering important ecological aspects. Insightful discussion of traditional plant combinations for both formal and informal styles is paired with examples of effective planting designs used at Longwood and other gardens. Develop a foundation in field sketching techniques including line, tone, and color through drawing exercises designed for the novice landscape designer. Ephemeral plants only spend a brief moment in the landscape but can add an instant pop of color or excitement when used effectively. Learn about the proper use of these transitory plants and their distinctive growth strategies. Explore layering techniques used to provide multiple displays within even a small garden throughout the year. Philadelphia is widely credited as being the epicenter of horticulture in the United States, both in the present day and historically. Lesser known is the role that women of Philadelphia played in promoting gardening as a viable career and as a channel for social activism. Join us as we visit the Ambler Arboretum at Temple University, former campus of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women; Andalusia, founding site of the Garden Club of America; and Wyck, the oldest rose garden in the United States. Martha Keen will be joined by Jenny Rose Carey, Eva Monheim, and Kathleen Salisbury, who will provide the context to interpret these gardens and the many other figures and locations that informed the Progressive Era in Philadelphia. We will explore the value and challenges of their continued preservation, and the relevance these gardens uphold today. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous walking. Appropriate footwear and water are recommended. Dress for all types of weather. Tom will show you how to uncover visual clues to unravel former agricultural, logging, or wind histories in our forests. Using the shapes of trees, trunk scars, stump decay patterns, stone walls, forest floor topography, and much more, a forest’s history can be deciphered in great detail. Walk off the beaten path through one of Longwood’s oldest woodlots and start looking for clues. Next, travel off-site for a rare opportunity to visit one of Chester County’s vast former estates, to continue reading the landscape and exploring previous land use.

Where Catalpa Room & Soil Shed Join us for a delightfully messy, handson, hypertufa trough-making workshop. Hypertufa is a lightweight, porous concrete mixture made from Portland cement, peat, and perlite. Your small, weatherproof container will welcome plants that like well-drained conditions such as sedums, hens and chicks, and rock garden plants. Ideal for those with limited space, troughs can be planted as miniature gardens or to display choice specimens. Louise will provide individual attention and step-by-step instructions from mixing and molding to aftercare. Please bring a pair of heavy duty rubber gloves for working with the cement mixture. Dress in layers in clothing that can get dirty.

From the French, a cloche is a glass covering, originally bell-shaped, for garden plants to prevent frost damage and promote early growth. Some plants need extra support from time to time. Discover different materials and approaches on how to make aesthetically pleasing supports that will add interest to your garden, and serve an important function for your plants. Different trellis ideas as well as staking and tying of perennials and annuals will be discussed through photos and hands-on demonstrations.

Learn the old English tradition and ecological benefits of coppicing. Coppicing is the practice of creating straight poles (withy) for use in the garden by removing the central leader of a tree or shrub. Using material harvested in this manner, learn to wattle—weaving woody branches into an ornamental garden structure (roughly 24" long and 18" in height). The versatility, the practicality, and delightful creativity of coppice maintenance and wattling will surprise and win over new and old gardeners alike. This course requires hand strength to bend and form woody branches. Please bring your own pruners and gardening gloves.

Kusamono are potted arrangements of wild grasses and flowers in unique pots or trays selected to suggest a season, place, or natural habitat. Join US National Arboretum’s Kusamono artist Young Choe, for a hands-on experience in this Japanese botanical art. Learn characteristic styles, methods for creation, display techniques, and care for Kusamono. Through a lecture and demonstration, Young will share her expertise and enthusiasm for these accent plantings that are often paired with bonsai displays. You’ll have the opportunity to create your own Kusamono to take home and enjoy. All materials included.

The term is sometimes defined as a “maize field” but is more commonly used to name a place where maize is cultivated along with a combination of nutritionally and environmentally complementary crops. Nowadays the concepts of the milpa are worked into gardens with plants from throughout the world. Learn about the wonders of pre-Columbian horticultural practices that gave birth to some of the world’s greatest civilizations and whose principals help drive popular modern movements such as permaculture. Each student will take home a starter pack to begin your own milpa.

Longwood’s Waterlily display attracts thousands of summer visitors who admire the tranquility and beauty of the unusual plants. Learn how to grow these lovely specimens at home. The class will include discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities as you divide and repot plants from Longwood’s collection to take home for your new water garden. Conclude with a walk around the waterlily display and discuss favorable conditions for growing these remarkable specimens.

Lush, fragrant peonies are gorgeous in the garden and gorgeous in floral arrangements. Learn tips for selecting peony varieties, growing and harvesting, and also some new ideas and techniques for using peonies as cut flowers. Take a trip with us to A Peony Garden in Glen Mills and select your own stems. When we return to Longwood, Jane will guide you in making a simple floral arrangement with freshly cut peonies.

Students receive water-loving plants, special medium, and a container to create their own miniature water garden. Please be prepared to transport a large container, dress for a hands-on experience, and bring gardening gloves if you care to use them.

You’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional cut stems from A Peony Garden for your own use. If you wish to purchase additional peonies, bring a bucket or deep container no larger than 12" across the top.

Please bring a vase with a 5"–8" opening.

Table grapes are often an afterthought to the rich flavors of those used to make wine and champagne. Explore the wide world of table grapes, which can also make great ornamental plants in the landscape. USDA ARS Research and Vitis aficionado, Rachel Naegele will provide a deep dive into the diversity of the plants that provide us with fresh grapes and raisins as well as a few selections that can also be used to make wines and vinegars. Following the presentation you will get a chance to view the grapery in the conservatory before heading over to the kitchen to sample dishes inspired by the rich, bold flavors of grapes, raisins, wine, grape leaves, and grapeseed oil.

Where Visitor Center Parking Lot Philadelphia is widely credited as being the epicenter of horticulture in the United States, both in the present day and historically. Lesser known is the role that women of Philadelphia played in promoting gardening as a viable career and as a channel for social activism. Join us as we visit the Ambler Arboretum at Temple University, former campus of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women; Andalusia, founding site of the Garden Club of America; and Wyck, the oldest rose garden in the United States. Martha Keen will be joined by Jenny Rose Carey, Eva Monheim and Kathleen Salisbury, who will provide the context to interpret these gardens and the many other figures and locations that informed the Progressive Era in Philadelphia. We will explore the value and challenges of their continued preservation, and the relevance these gardens uphold yet today. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous walking. The Japanese kusudama is a paper ornament that is created by combining multiple petal-like units together to form a sphere of beautiful blossoms. Kusudama originate from ancient Japanese culture, where they were originally used for potpourri to ward off evil spirits. Learn to make your own sphere by folding and gluing bright colorful papers. The finished product makes a lovely indoor decoration or gift. Leave with the ability to make more on your own. This course requires the dexterity of using your hands to make intricate paper folds, appropriate for beginners as well as those with experience in origami. All materials provided.

Learn to produce a unique piece of nature inspired art! Taylor combines his experience as an artist and horticulturist to teach the process for creating a desktop (10"–12") wire tree. Digital photography has enabled just about anyone to take photos easily and quickly. However, strategies to create better photos are often either never learned or frequently misunderstood. This class is aimed at beginners and uses constructive critique, and individually based suggestions to refine one’s eye to see beyond the mediocre photo. Camera mechanics will be de-emphasized in favor of learning elements of composition and seeing new photo ops where seemingly few exist. This workshop will focus on the outside grounds and gardens of Longwood. Participants must bring their own digital photographic equipment (camera, smart phone or DSLR) and blank memory card. Bring a laptop computer, tablet, or iPad and a flash drive to download images for the critique. Participants should have complete familiarity of their camera. A tripod is optional. Atkins pioneered the use of the cyanotype process to capture images of algae, ferns, flowers, and other botanicals. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a lovely monochromatic image in shades of blue. In this class, explore the history of this process and make your own cyanotypes using plant material harvested exclusively from Longwood.

Where Fully online Make your garden images stand out by learning basic digital photographic techniques in clear, easily applied terms. This five-week interactive online course engages students with hands-on projects and rich open discussions in a fully online environment. Complete weekly assignments in garden photography by shooting anywhere in the world. Assignments guide you from basic composition to editing techniques. Benefit from sharing and critiquing each other’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and review from the instructor. Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f/ stop) will start the class. Class materials and assignments will be devoted to seeing and composing through the lens (zooming, focus), exposure and metering, direction and quality of light. Floral Fun Classes Need a quick arrangement or hostess gift for the weekend? Try our Floral Fun classes. They’re quick, fun, and designed for everyone, regardless of experience. Each month, you create a themed design, perfect for weekend entertaining, to give as a gift, or just to enjoy at home. Our Floral Fun Classes are inexpensive, lots of fun, and a perfect outing to share with a friend! These classes do not meet the floral design elective requirements. We schedule each class for two hours, but some of you will finish more quickly; it just depends how much fun you are having!

Celebrate spring with a series of vases holding festive spring flowers. Use a new technique that allows glass vases to overflow with stems and blossoms. A copper wire grid will support the flower heads while allowing stems to be inserted into fresh water. The look is light and airy and the impact is high.

Go beyond the traditional size of a hand-held bouquet using the new floral mesh. Flora mesh, once only available in Europe, will be used to extend the size and drama of a traditional bouquet allowing for stems to be supported beyond the size of the hand. With foliage and flowers the support will disappear as the bouquet expands. Bring a tall vase with a 6"–10" opening to hold your grand bouquet.

We are delighted to welcome her back to the Longwood Ballroom for an evening to inspire your next party. In this lively and fun evening, join Jane as she demonstrates how to set the table with flowers for your next fête. Learn to match the formality of the setting with the appropriate colors and textures for the best effect. Watch as Jane uses a vast array of techniques that are translatable to your home or event on any scale.

The exam includes a written test, identification of flowers, and floral designrelated materials. In addition, candidates are required to create a floral design in a designated advanced style. Upon receipt of registration, your eligibility will be verified. Study materials are available to qualified students via our online classroom, about six weeks in advance. The candidate must earn a minimum of 70% on the written and practical exam to earn the Certificate of Merit in Floral Design.

Lush, fragrant peonies ...gorgeous in the garden, gorgeous in floral arrangements. Learn tips for selecting peony varieties, growing and harvesting, and also some new ideas and techniques for using peonies as cut flowers. Take a trip with us to A Peony Garden in Glen Mills and select your own stems. When we return to Longwood, Jane will guide you through the process of adding greens and making your own arrangement using freshly cut peonies and fresh water mechanics for a long lasting design. Please bring a vase with a 5"–8" opening. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional cut stems from A Peony Garden for your own use. If you wish to purchase additional peonies, bring a bucket or deep container no larger than 12" across the top. Flowers and greens for the classroom arrangement, and bus transportation to A Peony Garden are included.

Learn from the experts throughout the day with the opportunity to choose between various concurrent demonstrations. Cap off your day at the main stage program featuring top designers from around the world. This trip is for designers of all skills and abilities, but does not include a hands-on component. This class will give students an opportunity to explore kubari, the placement of branches or twigs in a container to support the materials in the arrangement. This technique, used in Ikebana for centuries, has become a popular alternative to traditional Westernstyle mechanics and adds an element of beauty to your design.

Large leaves, radiating colors, and unique forms of tropical flowers elevate any design. Using such bold elements can be challenging and Renee will show you how to incorporate them effectively for a dramatic design. This five-week interactive online course engages students with hands-on projects and rich, open discussions in a fully online environment. Complete weekly assignments in garden photography by shooting anywhere in the world. Assignments guide you from basic composition to editing techniques. Benefit from sharing and critiquing each other’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and review from the instructor.

Ever wonder what a phrase such as “dentate margin” means? Improve your plant identification skills through a study of leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. Look in detail at the methods (morphology) and terminology (nomenclature) used to describe plants throughout the seasons. You will also gain an understanding of the botanical system of plant names and how the plant kingdom is organized. This is important “groundwork” for anyone hoping to become a better gardener.

Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f/stop) will start the class. Class materials and assignments will be devoted to seeing and composing through the lens (zooming, focus), exposure and metering, direction and quality of light. The final assignments will challenge you to use color to capture a mood. This class also covers basic editing techniques (level, color correction, black and white, and file sizes).

Chrysanthemum Festival October 5–November 18 Chrysanthemum Festival is one of the largest and oldest chrysanthemum displays in North America. Thousands of chrysanthemums are nurtured and trained, some for more than a year, by our expert horticulturists to resemble orbs, spirals, shields, pagodas and more.

A Longwood Christmas November 22, 2018–January 6, 2019 A half-million twinkling lights, thousands of poinsettias, and magnificently decorated trees herald the arrival of A Longwood Christmas. Festive performances share the sounds of the season and illuminated fountains dance to music.
