Outdoors, gloriously illuminated trees lead you on an enchanting holiday journey through our Gardens. Stroll underneath floating orbs of light, watch as tree roots and branches take new illuminated life, and see our Main Fountain Garden as you’ve never seen it before. Warm up by our welcoming fire pits, listen to carolers, and relish in the wonder of A Longwood Christmas. Members may visit anytime, but require free, timed Member reservations every day during A Longwood Christmas if arriving after 2 pm. Gardens Premium Members and those included in their Membership do not require reservations. Member reservations are limited, and sell out is likely. With a timed Member reservation, you may enter the Gardens as early as a halfhour before or as late as a half-hour after your entry time. Later or earlier arrivals cannot be accommodated. You may stay as long as you wish once you enter the Gardens.

Arrive by 2 pm and youll miss the evening rush of traffic and still have time to explore all the Brandywine Valley has to offer after your visit to the Gardens. Keep in mind, traffic may become heavy approaching Longwood Gardens between 3 and 7 pm. e Prepared, Avoid the Lines. (4) Festive Food & Spirits in Our Beer Garden Starting November 23 Monday–Friday, 4–8 pm (limited menu last hour), weather permitting Saturday & Sunday and every day December 21–31, 12–9 pm, weather permitting Enjoy tasty pub fare, a variety of homemade pizzas, and burgers and sandwiches in our Beer Garden throughout A Longwood Christmas. Pair your fare with our holiday signature brew on tap, Longwood Seasons: Cherry Oatmeal Stout, developed in partnership with Victory Brewing Company and crafted with cherries grown in our Gardens (while supplies last). Open Air Theatre Fountains Dance to Holiday Classics Open Air Theatre fountain shows run on the hour from 10 amâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;3 pm, and every 5 minutes beginning at 3:30 pm. Shows are weather permitting.

Highlights From Our Gardens Unexpected Materials, Remarkable Displays Our Gardens are pinnacles of creativity this year, showcasing beautiful Christmas displays crafted from materials you’d least expect. Our outdoor Wildlife Tree, for one, wows with its 200 handmade illuminated birdhouses crafted by Longwood volunteers, many of which were created using fallen redwood and cypress trees from our property. At nightfall, the Wildlife Tree glows, evoking a sense of warmth. Following the close of A Longwood Christmas, the birdhouses will be given to area schools, as well as natural land organizations and trusts. Step inside the Conservatory and one of the first (of many) inspired elements you’ll see is the towering East Tree, a 24-foot white fir swathed in red ornaments and dripping in icicles, surrounded by a white deciduous tree and red winterberry holly forest. The Ballroom Tree is a vision of holiday gifts and trimmings from its tree garland made entirely of ornate packages to the golden present perched on top.

The Music Room sings with its creative library embellishments, anchored by a rotating 18-foot Fraser fir graced with a garland of gold manzanita branches to silver and copper books. A whimsical 14-foot tree built of children’s books—which will be donated to local public schools— stands beside the Music Room’s eight custom walnut book cases, adorned with reimagined books and paper works crafted by local artists Lee and Dannielle Vincent. The Mediterranean Garden glimmers with a suspended “tree” of 600 pieces of hand-cut stained glass measuring 12 feet high and 5 feet across, dexterously lingering above the garden’s center fountain. In the Palm House, a cone tree inspired by bold tropical textures and colors stuns with its fresh-cut tropical flower tree-topper. The Fern Passage beckons with moss tree forms topped with playful metal fiddleheads, while the Silver Garden delights with its 12-foot tumbleweed tree delicately embellished with white lights. Let your imagination run wild with our reimagined takes on trees, among many other inventive displays this season.

The Wonder of Seeds

Lighting the Way

(1) When you get down to it, seeds are nothing less than amazing marvels of nature. They mark the beginning of the plant journey, explode into extraordinary beauty, and, in turn, nourish and inspire human life.

(2) This season, gloriously illuminated trees and globes lead you on a magical holiday journey outdoors. Our half-a-million twinkling lights bring surprises at every turn, evoking a sense of graceful movement and enchantment as you explore our Gardens. As soon as you step out of our Visitor Center, you’re welcomed by our starlit elm tree beautifully lit in a rich blue. Turn right toward Flower Garden Drive and look up in wonder as you stroll underneath white and red bursts of color suspended along the pathway. Tree roots and branches take new life in light shows that take center stage along the Peirce’s Woods backdrop behind the Large Lake. An immense 36-foot cone tree beautifully accents the Italian Water Garden, while a color-changing globe display meanders along the Meadow Boardwalk. In the Main Fountain Garden, elegantly illuminated arches and cone trees placed in its basins reinvent this dramatic performance garden into a shimmering, lustrous forest.

In 2019 our Community Read and Continuing Education courses take a close look at the wonder of seeds and their influence on the human world. As part of our sixth year of Community Read, we are excited to announce The Triumph of Seeds: How Grains, Nuts, Kernels, Pulses, & Pips Conquered the Plant Kingdom and Shaped Human History by award-winning author Thor Hanson as our pick for 2019. Hanson’s warm and engaging writing helps uncover the power that seeds contain, their ability to endure, and the journeys they take. Also included in this year’s Community Read selections are two children’s books. For middle school readers, Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman tells the story of how the simple act of a nine-yearold girl planting lima bean seeds sparks individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and age levels to come together and create a community garden. For our youngest readers, The Reason for a Flower by Ruth Heller explores the parts of plants and their functions in Heller’s trademark rhythmic style. Our Continuing Education course lineup includes offerings that focus not only on seeds’ horticultural role, but also their artistic appeal and heritage. Floating Forest: A First for Longwood (3) Our celebration of the tree transcends our wildest expectations with this year’s Exhibition Hall display. Our dramatic interpretation of a floating forest features 17 live, lit, and decorated Fraser firs suspended from the ceiling, running the entire 70-foot length above the Fern Floor. These 8- to 10-foot tall trees, adorned with small crystals, silver glass reflecting balls, and faceted lights, will soar from heights of nearly 30 feet above the sunken marble Fern Floor to just skimming its still water surface, together creating a beautiful sense of weightlessness and whimsy. It’s a sight not to be missed, and one to behold from every angle around the Conservatory’s centerpiece space.

"We Shall Overcome"— A Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., Featuring Damien Sneed Saturday, January 19 8 pm Inspired by the words and action of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., We Shall Overcome showcases repertoire from across the African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches. Produced and directed by Damien Sneed, this production ties together a living lineage of music and culture from gospel to jazz to spirituals. Lavish Cymbidium orchids dramatically spill from basins, grand Phalaenopsis orchids float overhead, and tiny orchid species make a big impact, among other show-stopping arrangements. Take a quiet stroll through our outdoor gardens. Reflect amongst the solitude and enjoy the beauty of winter.

The outdoor gardens are open. Dining at The Terrace The Terrace is a Certified Green Restaurant through the Green Restaurant Association and offers these dining experiences: The Café, 1906, and the Beer Garden. For menus, hours, and 1906 reservations visit longwoodgardens.org/dine. For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers on a first-come basis. Children's strollers are available for a fee (complimentary for Members). Supply limited, reservations not accepted. Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather. Parking Longwood offers free parking for our guests.
