Highlights From Our Gardens Magic Takes Shape This Christmas we celebrate contours inspired by the delicate points of a snowflake to the bold swirls of a rainbow lollipop. From the moment you arrive, our focus on the silhouettes of the season takes shape. Embellished with beautiful geometric wreaths, our Visitor Center sets the stage for a magical experience. Our Canopy Cathedral Treehouse stuns with sculptural forms inspired by traditional Finnish Christmas decorations called Himmeli. In the Peirce-du Pont House, we’ve tucked succulents into diamond-shaped ornaments, woven gilded kiwi vine and Spanish-moss into flowing garland, and embellished each room to highlight a different shape, from stars to trees. In the Conservatory, our soaring East Tree is a 24-foot vision inspired by nature’s complex pine cone shape, dressed in shades of red, copper, silver, and white. Enveloped in 700 crystal ornaments, our glistening Ballroom Tree playfully complements the crystal shapes found in the Ballroom’s elegant chandeliers and sconces.
Our Music Room has been deliciously transformed into an upscale confectionery shop, swathed in pastel ornaments and sugary pink poinsettias to vintage candy molds and elegant apothecary jars brimming with whimsical treats. Delectably fun goodies from Shane Confectionery in Philadelphia, the oldest continually operating candy shop in the country, as well as handcrafted porcelain ornaments by local artist Anne Piazza elevate the playfulness of the room. Concentric circles of Phalaenopsis adorn the Orchid House living wreath, while snowflakes shine in the Estate Fruit House. In the Tropical Terrace, classic ornaments in exaggerated shapes lead the way to the delightfully embellished Silver Garden, with its spirals of ribbon and ornaments cradling textural Tillandsia. From a celebratory homage to the iconic silhouettes found in our Conservatory to a whimsical recreation of nature’s most unique forms, our celebration of shapes comes full circle this season.
Plot Twist Our iconic Fern Floor tells a beautifully innovative story this season. Originating from the 22-foot-tall Exhibition Hall Stage tree—itself adorned with red, gold, and silver globes—an astounding 350 feet of exquisite gilded ribbon flows out onto the Fern Floor, adding a dimension never before seen in this hallmark space. Measuring 20 inches in width, the ribbon enchants and interacts with larger-than-life ornaments and live cut trees placed along the floor, and its mesmerizing curves and spirals guarantee an engaging view from every angle. The ribbon is constructed by bending poplar and mahogany wood, and then assembled and arranged in a process termed “entwine” as conceived by Longwood Specialty Horticulture Grower Kevin Bielicki. A trained artist with a Master of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University, Bielicki led the progression of designing and building the ribbons in individual modules along with Longwood Senior Horticulturist Michael Strengari, and then intertwining them in a repetition of similar shapes to create the resulting ribbon form. This fantastically fluid, undulating structure boasts a playfulness that ties into the Music Room’s confectionery shop theme … and claims a distinctive beauty all its own.
Merry and Bright From an illuminated tunnel in our Meadow Garden to dancing lights in our Main Fountain Garden, our half-a-million outdoor twinkling lights lead to infinite “oohs” and “aahs.” Start your holiday stroll amid floating orbs of color along Flower Garden Drive. Linger among lighted tree roots that line the Large Lake and take in short light shows set to music along a Peirce’s Woods backdrop. Luminous globes of light along the Meadow Boardwalk lead the way to a spectacular new Meadow Garden tunnel of light. This 140-foot-long spectacle bejeweled in gold and warm white hues spans a height of 10 feet and features a gentle curve, enveloping those who walk through in a seemingly endless span of light. In the Main Fountain Garden, lights with shimmering, flowing, and bubbling effects dance along to holiday music.
Winter Performances Enjoy an exceptional performance in the most exceptional of settings with these upcoming shows.
