Highlights from Our Gardens Come Play in our Pumpkin Display!

A Tradition of Chrysanthemums

(1) Visit our outdoor Children’s Corner this September and October for some fall fun with pumpkins! Children can pick up and play with hundreds of pumpkins and can also strike a pose by our largest pumpkin in the display, weighing in at more than 800 pounds. Big, small, bumpy, and smooth— there will be all types of pumpkins and gourds on view. Pack your camera, because this display is a picture perfect spot!

(3) Chrysanthemums have been displayed in our conservatory since it first opened in 1921. Since then Longwood Gardens has built one of the largest and oldest chrysanthemum displays in North America. Our collection consists of nearly 200 cultivars representing all 13 chrysanthemum classes recognized by the National Chrysanthemum Society. One of the rarest and most difficult chrysanthemums we grow is our Thousand Bloom. We first began growing chrysanthemums in the Thousand Bloom style in 1994. Our first effort yielded 150–250 blooms. We set out to learn more about growing a Thousand Bloom, including studying the traditional techniques with experts in Japan. Our efforts paid off, as the number of blooms increased each year from 331 in 2007 to 1,339 in 2012. Our horticulture experts spend more than a year preparing for our Chrysanthemum Festival, cultivating 16,000 chrysanthemum plants into artistic shapes and forms. Come see what artistic feat we’ve created this year during Chrysanthemum Festival, October 26–November 24.

Thousand Bloom Mum Travels to United States Botanic Garden (2) For the first time, Longwood Gardens is growing a Thousand Bloom chrysanthemum to take on the road. Beginning October 26, guests of the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) in Washington, DC, can see this rare beauty on display. Our Gardeners have been growing the plant for over a year. It will boast approximately 500–600 perfect white blooms. Longwood staff will travel to USBG with the mum and work with USBG’s team to arrange the blooms, sharing our plant care knowledge. We are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase this audacious plant to a new audience and share our expertise with our colleagues at USBG.

New! Treeware Collection From Our Forest to Your Table Every item in our new Treeware Collection is made from the reclaimed wood of fallen trees from our Gardens. These exclusive serveware accessories are hand-carved by local artisans, Artifaqt. Purchase on-site and online: $89–$179 In limited supply. Members save 10%. Learn more at longwoodgardens.org

Student Exhibition Garden On View through End of October The final project of the Professional Gardener students can be graded by all—The Student Exhibition Garden. From developing the landscape concept to final construction, through the maintenance and interpretation of the space, students combine the knowledge gained in their courses and work rotations to execute this “real world” experience on their own. This year, four teams of students transformed their interpretation of the theme “Beyond the Garden Gates” into a landscape, each dramatically different from the other and some incorporating a variety of unusual plants: a monkey puzzle tree, Araucaria araucana, bromeliads, Vriesea odorata and Aechmea ‘Hacienda’, and bird-of-paradise, Strelitzia reginae. The students took an abstract theme and transformed these spaces into beautiful, inviting, and engaging gardens for our guests to enjoy. Senior PG Megan Gardner reflects on the project, “My favorite

part about the Student Exhibition Garden was seeing the end result. You imagine how your garden is going to look, how big your plants will be when they are delivered, and you imagine colors that may or may not be a big part of your design.” The Student Exhibition Garden will be open through the end of October; come and grade them yourself. Learn more about our Professional Gardener Program at longwoodgardens.org.

Education is a Global Goal Education at Longwood Gardens is going global. Students can now visit and learn at our Gardens without leaving their classrooms via Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC). IVC

technology enables our educators to see and speak with students in real time, no matter where they are. During each lesson, students participate in learning activities and virtually travel to different parts of the Gardens see plants up close through a variety of media. We have already connected with 14 different classrooms in the U.S. and Canada during the piloting stage of the program and look forward to teaching our Desert Plant Adaptations and Tropical Plant Adaptations lessons to students around the world beginning in the fall. Lessons are being developed for students in grades 1–6, with plans to reach grades K–12, university students, and beyond!

Our Trial Garden is in Peak Bloom Visit our Trial Garden now through mid-October to see how Longwood’s research team of horticulture experts are experimenting with new plants and testing the limits of old varieties for future use in our brilliant displays. The plants in this Garden will go through our plant evaluation process. Over the course of this season, we will evaluate each variety for height, flower color and size, foliage color and texture, bloom time and duration, as well as insect and disease resistance. Only the top performing plants will be approved for use in our ever-changing displays. This new garden will be a focal point of the 2013 International Trials Conference that Longwood Gardens is hosting September 16–20. Learn more at longwoodgardens.org. Have even more fun in this Garden if you visit us during Beyond the Garden Gates Days & Nights events through October 9 to get a chance to vote for your favorite plant and receive an “I voted” sticker.
