AU TU MN Autumn’s Colors September 12–November 22
Autumn’s Colors On view September 12–November 22 When crisp, cool mornings awake us, golden hues paint our landscape, and children’s laughter abounds in our Garden Railway, we know that Autumn’s Colors has arrived. It’s the perfect time of year to take a nature walk in our Meadow Garden, where you’ll be enveloped by colorful goldenrod, native asters, and meadow grasses. Starting in mid-October, explore our Conservatory to see our most horticulturally intense display, Chrysanthemum Festival, which features our Thousand Bloom Mum, the largest mum in North America. When the sun sets, our Gardens remain aglow as the nighttime spectacle of Nightscape continues, and our popular Night of 1,000 Lights event returns. Cover: Our Webb Farmhouse, located in the Meadow Garden, was restored in 2014 to reflect its appearance at the end of the eighteenth century. The Webb Farmhouse recently won the 2015 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Award presented by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. Photo by Carlos Alejandro.

Highlights from Our Gardens Chrysanthemums as a Core Collection (1) Chrysanthemums are the centerpiece of our annual Chrysanthemum Festival. To create this unique exhibition, we maintain an inventory of more than 200 different cultivars that are not reliably available from commercial sources anywhere in the US. At the collection’s core are 45 cultivars of Chrysanthemum × morifolium bred for use with several Asian, mostly Japanese, growing techniques. The most iconic technique our growers employ is the Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum resulting in a single plant, over 12 feet in diameter, with as many as 1,500 perfectly arranged flowers. Only two cultivars in the world are suitable for this technique, ‘Susono-no-Hikari’ and C. ‘Susono-no-suki’, both originating from Japan. Other key cultivars in our core collection include the Cascade Mums, also bred in Japan, for use in the cascade growing technique. These cultivars include ‘Megumi’, ‘Kurume’, ‘Tsuribito,’ and many others which we use to make our famous hanging orb-shaped baskets, column skirts, and spiral forms. Other cultivars rounding out the collection are ‘Hatsune’, ‘Kotoi No Kaori’, and ‘Tsubaki Hime’ which are used for making Chrysanthemum bonsai. The Chrysanthemum collection is one of 17 Longwood core collections. The core collections are special groups of plants within the overall plant collection that deserve the highest level of attention because of their display, legacy, research, education, preservation, and environmental values. The core collections each have an assigned collection curator, a Longwood staff member, who develops and oversees the management plan for the collection.
A Fountain of Mums (2) Our horticulture experts spend more than a year growing and training our chrysanthemums into amazing shapes for Chrysanthemum Festival. A new form not to be missed this year is our Mum Fountain. Inspired by our Fountain Revitalization Project, the new form stands 12 feet tall and is formed from 17 mum plants grown in four containers featuring more than 2,000 blooms. Our craftsmen created the custom stainless steel framework to which our horticulture experts trained and grew cascade-style chrysanthemums. To do this, our horticulture experts wrapped the fountain-shaped frame in chicken wire to support the plant as it grew. The branches of the mums are tied to the chicken wire with green wire, about 2” to 3” long. We use cascade-style chrysanthemums for our forms because of their long, trailing growth habit and very small flowers. The mums used for this particular display were started from cuttings from December 2014. Every two weeks throughout the summer, our gardeners pinched the tips out of every branch and tied the branches to the fountainshaped metal frame. This forces the plant to grow more branches and ensures that at display time there will be a solid carpet of flowers overflowing from the fountain form.
Staff Exchange: Longwood In Scotland (3) One of the ways we bring new ideas and plants to our Gardens is through our International Staff Exchange Program. With opportunities in Scotland, England, Singapore, and China, Longwood staff members can apply for the program and work in a garden abroad for a few months. This past June and July our

Senior Gardener, Kat McCullough, was at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. Throughout August, Kat worked at the Logan Botanic Garden and Benmore Botanic Garden. She returns to Longwood in September. Kat is working to find new plant varieties that could be used at Longwood, especially for the Conservatory and seasonal displays. We have been following her travels through her blog, and we invite you to do the same. In her blog, Kat talks about her work in the Gardens and also about her experiences in a new country with a new culture. Read all about her experiences here: kamccullough.wordpress.com.
throughout the seasons. Some of the plants in areas such as our Flower Garden Walk and Silver Garden will need to be switched out due to growth rates and natural plant cycles. The back drop of our Large Lake display, which is mostly deciduous trees, will shift as the trees change color and lose their leaves. The mix of horticulture and technology is especially prominent as Longwood works with Klip Collective to keep the Nightscape displays looking phenomenal throughout these fall months.
Explore New Heights (5) Visit our new online exhibit, newheights.longwoodgardens.org, to explore the project featuring our Main Fountain Garden. ‘New Heights’ honors the history of the Main Fountain Garden and allows visitors to learn more about the Revitalization project through original blueprints and conceptual diagrams, 3D renderings, illustrations of fountain mechanics, and more! Using full-screen video, ambient sound, and large archival imagery, the website transports and immerses its visitors into the world of the Fountain Garden.
Nightscape Changing with the Seasons (4) As our plants change this fall, so does our Nightscape display. Nightscape’s creator, Ricardo Rivera of Klip Collective, a Philadelphia-based visual art shop whose award-winning work in projection content couples technology with storytelling, planned ahead and worked with our horticulture team to identify which components of the canvas will change the most
