Students wishing to receive credit for their Landscape Design Certificate must attend the tour, complete an assignment on Windmar, and attend a follow-up session on May 19 from 5–7 pm to present, share, and discuss the assignment. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous walking. Appropriate footwear and a water bottle are recommended. Dress for all types of weather.
This year, the Elements of Design tour focuses on garden revitalization. Visit four local gardens that are in various stages of renovation. We will visit Nemours, the estate of Alicia and Alfred I. du Pont with its formal French gardens. The gardens underwent restoration and reopened after the 3-year process in 2008. We will meet with the consulting landscape architects on the project. We will then visit Gibraltar, the former estate of Hugh Rodney Sharp and Isabella Mathieu du Pont. The formal gardens were designed by Marian Coffin and installed from 1916–1923. Parts of the garden were restored in the late 1990s. Our next stop is Goodstay, the American Tudor inspired garden planted in the 19th century and restored and enhanced in the 1920s with iris, rose, and peony “rooms”. The final stop for the day will be the unrestored garden of Windmar, the former estate of Mary A.B. du Pont and her husband, W.W. Laird. The formal walled garden is awaiting revitalization. Join Jeff on this inspiring tour as he explores the thought process behind a revitalization project and how the basic concepts can relate to our own gardens, no matter the scale.

Short Courses, Workshops, and Tours A Community Read Join in on our Book Chats!
Join us for the second year of our Community Read initiative—a program designed to inspire people to pick up a good book, to read for pleasure and enlightenment, and to start a conversation. This year, we continue to think about our relationship to the natural world with the selection Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Published in 2013, the book explores the human relationship with plants from both scientific and cultural perspectives. Robin Wall Kimmerer is a botanist, State University of New York, (SUNY) faculty member, and Native American (member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation). Kimmerer’s lyrical writing style draws the reader into the natural world seen with new perspective. She embraces indigenous teachings that consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. Intended for a general audience, the book pairs an engaging amount of plant science (no previous knowledge needed) and insight into Native American cultural beliefs toward plants and the natural world. After registering you will be mailed a copy of Braiding Sweetgrass. Begin reading, and then participate in one of our group discussions hosted by the author. This is your chance to interact with Robin, to learn about the book, her work, and to share your thoughts and ideas.
Book Chat with the Author For readers interested in a personal experience with this gifted writer and scholar, we offer the opportunity to discuss the book with the author and a small group of fellow readers. Where Visitor Center Parking Lot This year, the Elements of Design tour focuses on garden revitalization.

Perfect for those with limited space, the fern table is designed for year-round outdoor display and makes a great Mother’s Day gift. Please wear work clothes and bring a trowel and gardening gloves if you like to use them. A shallow 14" x 14" carton (similar to a pizza carry-out box) for transporting your finished table is recommended.

These low maintenance plants have thickened and fleshy leaves or stems, which retain and provide water to the plant in arid climates or soil conditions. Combine a variety of succulents for a unique living wreath that will look beautiful all season.
Back by popular demand! Attendees will receive an exact reproduction of an urn-shaped planter from our iconic Main Fountain Garden. Jess will offer tips on container design, planting, and maintenance throughout the season. Take home a planted container for sun or shade just as beautiful as the ones you see at Longwood. Where Visitor Center Parking Lot Ready, set, SHOP! This unique trip will visit some relatively unknown regional nurseries where participants will find high-quality and often hard-to-find plants for their gardens. Many of these nurseries are not open to the public and are specifically selected by David. The only thing really needed for this trip is a little bit of self-control among the dynamic selection of woody, annual, and perennial plants at great prices. Purchases will be loaded into a truck and delivered back to Longwood to take home that day. It’s fun, it’s hectic, and it’s not for the faint of heart. Dress for all kinds of weather and bring your wish list. Sunscreen and a hat advised.
Ever get in a rut, planting the same thing every year in your containers? If so, bring your favorite container and get advice from an expert on the best plants to showcase and compliment your container. Everyone will make something different and you will gain perspective on pairing plants and containers. A container can set the mood, determine the location for your planting, and set the style for colors, height, and weight of materials. Be flexible–there won’t be the exact same plants for each person. It will be fun to see the varied results! Bring a container that you will be able to lift back into your car once it’s planted, no bigger than 24 inches across the opening.
Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine.

Hügelkultur, German for “mound culture” in its most basic form, is a technique whereby woody debris (fallen branches, twigs, and/or logs) are used as a resource to create productive, low-maintenance garden beds. Benefits of this low-cost, “lazy” gardening technique include improved soil fertility, soil moisture retention, and microclimate creation (including the potential for extending the growing season). Many bulbs divide and multiply in the garden. Learn how to speed up the process by propagating bulbs yourself using methods practiced by bulb growers and enthusiasts. Practice the “chipping” method of asexual bulb propagation on Galanthus and Narcissus bulbs. The process involves cutting the bulbs into quarters and then placing in bags of moist vermiculite. You will also learn how to scoop the basal plate of hyacinths to form new bulbils, as well as dividing lily scales to generate the formation of more lily bulbils. Take the chipped, scaled, and scooped bulbs home and the pieces should produce bulbils, thus generating more bulbs. Once you master the technique, you can increase your bulb inventory, especially on expensive bulbs!
Take your garden in a new direction! Learn different strategies for using and caring for moss in the garden, along with understanding the many moss varieties. We’ll blend up a recipe for a moss milkshake in the classroom. Apply the special mix to stepping blocks to take home and set out on a new moss covered path.
Take home the bulbils you produce in class as well as a sharp grafting knife.

As a serious photographer, do you dream of an opportunity to shoot at Longwood without the overlay of activity that is everpresent during normal garden hours? This is that opportunity! In four, three-hour sessions, you will be given a series of challenging but fun assignments and the freedom to move through selected areas of the Garden to complete them. Class time is devoted to photography, so we will use online support for lively discussions and critiques. Participation in the online discussions is expected of all participants.
Orchid Extravaganza fills the Conservatory with thousands of rare and beautiful orchids. This is your opportunity, as a photo enthusiast, to capture striking images of orchids under the guidance of our instructor.
