Coming in 2014... Every Place Tells a Story Just like the roots of our historic trees, the stories of our Gardens are strong and far-reaching. They touch the land upon which our story began, they inspire our vision while paying homage to our legacy, and they forever connect us with our community. This coming year, our longstanding roots give rise to spectacular things, celebrating 100 years of the Open Air Theatre, expanding a Meadow Garden to 86 acres, and capturing the stories of those whose lives have been touched by the experiences here. Courses that pertain to our 2014 theme are designated by this symbol.

Certiﬁcate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture Expand your knowledge of horticulture through our Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture class offerings. Choose what best suits you, whether it’s an individual 6-week or 3-week class in plant identification or plant science, or the pursuit of a Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture. Students in the Certificate Program can earn sequential, multiple Certificates of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture (Level I, II, etc.). Each certificate is earned consecutively and is based on meeting the requirements listed on the next page. Create your own focus and develop expertise in areas that interest you through a series of requirements listed below. Required courses (to ensure a base level of knowledge) along with electives in plant sciences, plant identification, and horticultural techniques are available for a tailor-made horticulture learning experience.

The world of exotic and tropical plants, ranging from colorful foliage plants to fragrant flowering plants, will be covered in this course, with concentration on identification, culture, growth patterns, and management in the interior and exterior landscape. Appropriate overwintering locations will also be discussed. The use of these plants provides the opportunity to add color, texture, movement, and seasonal excitement to interiors throughout the year and to containers and garden beds in the warm season for home, garden, institutional, or commercial applications.

Understanding and caring for a garden’s soil is essential for helping plants to thrive. A plant’s nutrition, growth, and ability to endure environmental conditions all depend heavily on the soil in which it’s growing. Discover how soils differ in texture and structure, physical and chemical properties, and fertility. Learn how a soil’s pH and organic matter affect plant growth and how to work with the soil in your garden to get the best results. Flowering trees are among the most eye-catching plants in season. Defined as flowering trees less than 40 feet tall, these plants make spectacular statements, accents, and specimen trees in any landscape. This course will focus on identification, culture, and landscape uses of favorites such as dogwoods, cherries, and magnolias; in addition to some beautiful, lesser known species like the snowbell (Styrax spp.) and dove tree (Davidia involucrata).

Hardy bulbs are an important part of the garden palette from late winter through spring and a few even bloom in autumn. Discover the many kinds that are seldom or rarely affected by deer and other critters. These easily grown bulbs and other tuberous plants provide a succession of bloom in a wide range of colors and reappear each year in increasing numbers. This class focuses on some of the best groundcovers to grow in the MidAtlantic region. Deciduous trees are typically the most long-lasting plants in a landscape and when mature, can be the most valuable structures on the property. They provide framework to your garden and many species contribute significant habitat for wildlife. Deciduous trees offer essential shade in the landscape and can even lower your energy bill if placed correctly. This course will cover the identification and landscape uses of deciduous trees found in this region. This class has two main topics of discussion: plant morphology and plant nomenclature. The first part of the class will focus on the outward structure, or morphology, of plants during the growing season. Look in detail at the methods and terminology of plant identification through a diverse study of leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. The second part deals with understanding the botanical system of plant names and how the plant kingdom is organized. This is important “groundwork” for anyone hoping to become a successful gardener. This course will introduce you to the culture, identification, use, and landscape design qualities of a range of plants suitable for use in the MidAtlantic region. Information presented will focus on each plant’s unique qualities, key identification characteristics, and considerations for selection in the design of traditional, contemporary, and naturalistic landscapes. Landscape Design Gain professional experience and drawing skills to design exquisite landscapes with ease through the Certificate of Merit in Landscape Design. Whether you are pursuing a certificate or just interested in beautifying your property, landscape design courses are available to everyone. Previous knowledge of plant material is strongly recommended and is required for some courses. To earn a Certificate, you must satisfactorily complete core courses, receiving a minimum grade of 70% in each course. Core course grades will be based on assignments, class projects, and participation. Elective courses will be graded on a pass/non-pass basis. To receive credit toward a Certificate, students must complete an assignment. Small class size ensures low student-teacher ratios. Please register early.

Gain practice in master drawing and drafting by accurately measuring a garden space, translating measurements to scale, and drafting a base plan. Get acquainted with design tools such as a scale, triangle, and T-square, and garner the knowledge needed to develop a concept plan, converse professionally with other designers, and examine landscapes with an educated eye.

Many design lessons can be learned from studying meadows and other wild areas. This course will start by looking at examples of unmanaged areas to draw out elements that can be included in the design of gardens of any scale. The course will explore how gardens can be enhanced by incorporating or imitating the patterns or habits of natural areas. Each student will develop a plant list and focus on their own project to design a garden, taking into account location, scale, cultural issues, plant selection, combinations, and succession. Create beautiful planting designs with balance, repetition, and cohesiveness using elements of design including line, form, color, and texture. Gain exposure to different garden situations, such as the sunny perennial border or woodland garden while considering important ecological aspects. Insightful discussion of traditional plant combinations for both formal and informal styles is paired with examples of effective planting designs used at Longwood and other gardens. Join us for a stimulating walk in the woods, where we will observe, explore, and discuss many of the design opportunities and challenges contained within the Park. Through our explorations and discussions, we will learn just how crucial a thorough understanding of urban ecology is for maximizing user experience and maintaining forest health on urban natural land. Among the many sights and scenarios that we will examine are: eroded trails and restored trails, storm water impacts, old mill dams, a highly urbanized creek, highly stressed tributaries, WPA structures, the Bells Mill Road grade crossing and bridge, large schist outcrops, weeping rocks, and impressive trees. Along the way, we will also learn about the fascinating geologic history of the Park. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous hiking. Appropriate footwear, water, binoculars, and field journal/ sketchbook are recommended. Lunch, on your own, is available at Valley Green Inn. Students wishing to receive credit for their Landscape Design Certificate must complete and submit an assignment designed specifically for this landscape tour. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine.

This course is for beginning landscape designers who are looking to take their graphic communications to the next level. SketchUp is a powerful and flexible tool that enables designers to envision and communicate their creations in 3D. Students will be introduced to the software, taught its basic functions, and learn how to generate a model from a 2D drawing and real-life example. Operations such as importing existing drawings and converting them to 3D, applying textures, basic contour modeling, and exporting images and documents will be covered as you create a simple landscape design. Students are required to bring their own laptop with the latest Basic Version of SketchUp already installed (downloads are free at http:// www.sketchup.com/intl/en/download/index. html). A full-size mouse and power cable are highly recommended. Students should have solid two-dimensional manual drafting/drawing skills and be comfortable working in a computer operating system environment (Windows or Mac). Operations such as click, double-click, saving files, and other common tasks must be second nature as a prerequisite. Be sure to test your software installation before arriving at class. There will not be time in the course to troubleshoot installations, hardware, or software problems.

Gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between Chinese, Korean and Japanese gardens; and learn about components of traditional gardens, as well as interpretive gardens that borrow ideas and adapt them in innovative ways. This class will include an initial design overview to understand the historic context and complexity of Asian gardens, with applications for the United States. Rock placement will be addressed, with step-bystep construction approaches to the use of rocks in garden design. Asian garden plants and the use of garden elements, such as walls, fences, walkways, lanterns, and basins in Asian gardens will also be discussed.

Gertrude Jekyll was perhaps the most important British garden designer of the 20th century. She famously argued that gardening ought to be considered a Fine Art, highlighting that it becomes a point of honor to be always striving for the best. In her new book, Gertrude Jekyll: Her Art Restored at Upton Grey, author Rosamund Wallinger examines Jekyll's work at Manor House, Upton Grey in Hampshire, England and offers insight into Jekyll's eclectic, imaginative, and inspiring art. Designed between 1908 and 1909, and once maintained by as many as nine gardeners, the garden fell into disrepair by the second half of the twentieth century, before a full and accurate restoration was carried out in the early 1980s. This restoration was led by Wallinger and her husband, the current owners of Upton Grey. During this lecture, taken from her years of developing this book, Wallinger will share a visual record of the garden's plants and layout, with original plans and photographs, as well as beautiful images of the garden taken since its restoration. Hear about her experiences with Upton Grey and how her book succeeds in illustrating exactly why Jekyll was so admired in her lifetime and why she continues to inspire and influence gardeners today.

Join our first-ever Community Read. Community or Big Reads are designed to inspire people to pick up a good book, to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment, and to start a conversation on a specific topic. This year our focus is on preserving land, legacy, and community. With this in mind we've chosen A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. First published in 1949, A Sand County Almanac has sold over two million copies in ten languages, and is a wonderful book about conservation and the need for a human conscience towards the use of land. It’s beautifully written with great descriptions of nature and the way plants and animals interact with each other for survival. After registering, you will be mailed a copy of a A Sand County Almanac. Begin reading, and then participate in one of our small group discussions. Led by our staff, these book chats will be an informal exchange of ideas and impressions about Leopold and his work in conservation. Accompanied by garden-wide activities, this Community Read will include weekly Blog posts and the opportunity to view the film Green Fire (based on Leopold’s extraordinary career). This pleasurable walking tour puts participants up close and personal with champion trees in all parts of the Garden and in areas not typically open to the public. These champion trees are the biggest, tallest, and oldest trees in our region, and in some cases, even in Pennsylvania and the nation. You’ll be able to measure and record tree circumferences, heights and spreads, and discuss tree identification, structure, and natural history. Standing at the base of one of these giant trees is an indescribable experience. “Big Trees of Pennsylvania” book is included. This is an outdoor experience. Please dress for all types of weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. You may be walking on uneven paths. This is a rain or shine walking tour.

Container gardening continues to soar in popularity, and stone-like troughs give gardeners a weatherproof option for displaying plantings. This class will cover the method of making troughs, paving stones, or birdbaths out of cement, paper, perlite, and a little creativity. Every student will create and take home a small trough, along with the knowledge to make more. Wear old clothes and bring a pair of well fitting, heavy-duty waterproof dishwashing gloves. Dust masks will be provided. We will be working outside, so please dress appropriately. Hats and sunscreen are suggested.

Longwood’s Water Garden display attracts thousands of summer visitors who admire the tranquility and beauty of the unusual plants. Join our waterlily experts to learn how to grow these lovely specimens at home. The class will include discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities as you divide and repot surplus plants from Longwood’s collection to take home for your new water garden. The class will end with a walk around the waterlily display and a discussion of favorable conditions for growing these amazing specimens. Students receive water-loving plants, special medium, and a container to create their own miniature water garden. The rose is one of the most recognizable and popular flowers in the world; yet many gardeners are intimidated by them because of their reputation for being very difficult to grow. Join Robin as he discusses selecting roses, planting, fertilizing, managing insects and diseases, as well as pruning and training various types of roses. Through a combination of classroom discussion and outdoor exploration, we will get a feel for the water cycle and gain a deeper understanding of water in its various forms and locations. Coverage will include streams, wetlands, aquatic life, watersheds, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, groundwater, and evapotranspiration. Do you have a lawn on your property? Say you stopped mowing and went away for ten years. Upon your return, in what state do you think you would find your lawn? Chances are, you would encounter a young woodland emerging where your grass used to be. Join us in the classroom and outside to discuss the values provided by our forests and to explore the wonders within the forest canopy. In both our classroom discussion and our interactive woodland walk, we will cover: forest layers, forest succession, the living subterranean root zone, trees and shrubs, woodland wildflowers, forest critters, the role of water, ecosystem services, and the unique sense of place beneath the treetops. Come prepared to engage in lively discussion and to get your hands a little dirty.

Join two of our horticulturalists on a journey to learn about how a wide range of ornamental plants have been used medicinally both in past and present times to treat everything from the common cold and arthritis to cancer. Learn the basics of the cold process method of soap making using vegetable oils and herbal additives. This is a hands-on class where you will make and take home a batch of soap that you personally design. Herbal additives and essential oils will be available for use and a discussion will be held to understand the benefits of different herbs and oils for soap making. Safety equipment will be supplied and required. Please bring a small shoebox or plastic container as a mold for your soap.

This holiday season, why not give a gift to the birds by making an outdoor wildlife tree? Find out how to create a tree that is both beautiful and provides food for our feathered friends. This is your opportunity, as a photo enthusiast, to capture striking images of orchids under the guidance of our instructor. Where Catalpa Room As a serious photographer, do you dream of an opportunity to shoot in the Gardens without the buzz of activity during the day? This is that opportunity! In four, three-hour sessions, you will be given a series of challenging but fun assignments and the freedom to move through selected areas of the Gardens to complete them. Class time is devoted to photography, so we will use online support for lively discussions and critiques. Participation in the online discussions is expected of all participants. This class is open to all who own a digital, single lens reflex camera. Because we will be shooting in available light, a sturdy tripod is highly recommended. Basic instruction in the fundamentals of photography will be provided online for those who are new photographers or interested in a camera basics refresher.

Join us in the Gardens to photograph the splendor of early morning’s golden light. Meet before sunrise, discuss briefly where the best locations are to be found, and then head out to photograph, just as the sun is rising. You’ll need a tripod and a shutter release is highly recommended. Colored pencils are a versatile medium to interpret flowers and plants with rich, glowing, and realistic results. Learn how to build up layers of color, burnish, and use the least obvious colors to get the elusive subtleties of nature. Initially work from simple forms of fruits and vegetables, and progress to more complex plants and flowers, learning to emphasize accurate drawing and form. No previous art experience is needed. As part of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to borrow and experiment with a wide range of Canon EOS bodies, flashes, and lenses to further enhance the experience. Photographers are, by nature, curious folks. Interested in the workings of things, eager to see what others don’t see, photographers crave access to places not generally available to others. In this course you will have three hours to visit the tunnels that run under the Main Conservatory, providing power, water, and climate control for the gardens above. In order to ensure that you fully understand what you are seeing, two of our staff whose daily routine is focused on keeping things running smoothly, will give you a history of the tunnels and explain the day-to-day function of the complex system. The rest of the time will be spent photographing the fascinating world that lies below the Conservatory, ending with a critique of images collected from the group.

What happens when you combine two different media? This easy and enjoyable technique results in a vibrant lifelike painting. The first step is to paint a flat, one-color simple shape which becomes the underpainting. Then apply, by layering and blending, wax-based colored pencils. The combination creates a glowing painting with lifelike depth and dimensionality. Demonstrations and step-by-step instruction, as well as live specimens, enhance the workshop. Conservatory Road separates Abbondi from the public areas of the Gardens. You’ll find beautiful mature trees, ponds with wildlife, and meadows. We will begin the day at the APGA house (located at the entrance to Abbondi property) with an introduction to the unique landscape and autumn photography. This course provides you with the basic skills you need to design, prepare, and arrange the flowers for a full-scale wedding and reception from basic corsages, boutonnieres, flower-girl headpieces and bouquets; to simple bridal bouquets, church aisle decorations, and reception cake decorations. Ikebana expert Midori Tanimune will guide you through the process of constructing a beautiful, re-usable structure made from handmade paper. You will then use fresh flowers and greens to complement it with a contemporary Ikebana design.

Decorating a table can be lots of fun! From contemporary floral design to some unusual uses of flowers and vegetables, this class will be full of ideas for wowing your guests with your creativity and style. Get yourself ready for a bountiful Thanksgiving table.

A cup kenzan will be provided. Bring a tall vase or a shallow container.

Bring a container of your choosing—long and low, multiple small ones, or a dramatic tall shape. We’ll explore various design options given a potpourri of vases.

Wreaths are a wonderful décor for the holiday. This class will inspire you with ideas and trends from Europe. A variety of seasonal greens and cones will be provided for students to create a wreath to celebrate the season and enjoy its aroma.

Bring wire cutter, clippers, and floral scissors.

Bring clippers, wire snips, and garden gloves. Please bring four yards of ribbon for a festive bow and any holiday embellishments, if desired.

Make your garden images stand out by learning basic digital photographic techniques in clear, easily applied terms. This 5-week interactive online course engages students with hands-on projects and rich, open discussions in a fully online environment. Complete weekly assignments in garden photography by shooting anywhere in the world. Assignments guide you from basic composition to editing techniques. Benefit from sharing and critiquing each other’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and from a final portfolio review from the instructor. Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f/stop) will start the class. Class materials and assignments will be devoted to seeing and composing through the lens (zooming, focus), exposure and metering, direction, and quality of light. The final assignments will challenge you to use color to capture a mood. This class also covers basic editing techniques (level, color correction, black and white, and file sizes).

Experienced photographers, take your garden photography to the next level in a fully online environment by discovering and applying sophisticated approaches to composition, exposure, lighting, and post processing. Work at your own pace and shoot gardens anywhere in the world in this 5-week interactive online course. Learn and practice new techniques in weekly assignments and share and discuss the images you shoot through direct interaction with your skilled instructor and classmates. Toward the end of the course, we will focus on macro photography and some of the popular software that is being used by amateurs and professionals alike to process and enhance their work. Students enrolling in this class should be experienced photographers who are thoroughly familiar with the principles of exposure and composition, own and are familiar with a DSLR, and have either completed the Digital Garden Photography Basic I course, or are conversant with its content.

Autumn’s Colors September 7–November 23 Reconnect with nature amid the glowing reds, golds, and oranges of fall. As autumn’s chill sets in, escape to our conservatory where horticultural feats abound during the Chrysanthemum Festival.
