Ornamental plants offer a multi-purposed approach that supports emerging lifestyles and a practical way to look at the garden. A mixed bed can take your garden into the kitchen year-round. This course will concentrate on identification, culture, landscape, and culinary use by concentrating on planting combinations of safe edible species and cultivars that are suitable for growing in the garden or containers. Tasting opportunities will be provided!

Mixed with annuals and perennials or filling empty spaces later in the season, summer flowering bulbs are an important part of the garden palette. Some bring intriguing detail to the garden, while others provide lush foliage and abundant bloom. Winter hardy varieties return each year, and even tender kinds are especially easy to overwinter. Most bulbs are pest and disease resistant, even to deer. This course will focus on the identification and culture of bulbs, corms, rhizomes, and tubers that flower in summer.

Prerequisite Landscape Design I + a minimum of 3 Certificate of Merit plant identification courses. Garden designers have been called creative problem solvers. They must take into consideration site characteristics and challenges, as well as plant combinations for year-round interest. Using elements from Landscape Design I, create beautiful planting designs with balance, repetition, and cohesiveness. Gain exposure to different garden situations, such as the sunny perennial border or woodland garden, while considering important ecological aspects. Insightful discussion of traditional plant combinations for both formal and informal styles is paired with examples of effective planting designs used at Longwood and other gardens. This practical course allows you to develop a planting plan based on realistic situations and clearly communicate the desired effect and design intent.

Knowing climatic conditions is critical to growing plants successfully. Understanding and reflecting on the natural, historical, and cultural aspects that contribute to a sense of place can similarly affect the success of a garden or landscape design. In this 4-week course, expect illustrated lectures, assigned readings, discussions, and exercises that use a sense of place as a starting point to develop landscape design ideas and approaches.

This day-long tour will highlight several exquisite private gardens in the region. Join landscape architects Allan Summers and Geoff Anderson, with Rodney Robinson Landscape Architects, Inc., as they lead you through the design process they used to create three unique residential gardens. Go beyond the beautiful vistas to understand the theory and structural design for each garden and discover how these elements are integrated into each homeowner’s individual style and needs. Plant selections and special features will be evaluated and discussed at each location. After visiting two gardens in the morning, the tour will wind its way to Winterthur, for a lunch stop and the opportunity to explore several gardens designed by Allan and Geoff. Following Winterthur, we’ll visit the third private garden, where you will explore design and planting ideas for achieving an exuberant garden within a limited space. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous walking. Appropriate footwear and water are recommended. Dress for all types of weather. Students wishing to receive credit for their Landscape Design Certificate must complete and submit an assignment designed specifically for this landscape tour.

This course is for beginning landscape designers who are looking to take their graphic communications to the next level. SketchUp is a powerful and flexible tool that enables designers to envision and communicate their creations in 3D. Students will be introduced to the software, taught its basic functions, and learn how to generate a model from a 2D drawing and real-life example. Operations such as importing existing drawings and converting them to 3D, applying textures, basic contour modeling, and exporting images and documents will be covered as you create a simple landscape design. Students are required to bring their own laptop with SketchUp installed. We recommend downloading SketchUp Make for Educational Use. This is a FREE download available at http://www.sketchup.com. A full-size mouse and power cable are highly recommended. Students should have solid two-dimensional manual drafting/ drawing skills and be comfortable working in a computer operating system environment (Windows or Mac). Operations such as click, double-click, saving files and other common tasks must be second nature as a prerequisite. Be sure to test your software installation before arriving at class. There will not be time in the course to troubleshoot installations, hardware, or software problems.

Aquaponic systems have been used to grow food for thousands of years. Discover their renaissance as a means of food production in an environment of shrinking farm land. Aquaponics is a method of combining aquaculture (raising aquatic animals), hydroponics (growing plants without soil), and bacteria in a symbiotic relationship. In essence, the fish produce waste, the bacteria breaks it down to fertilizer, and the plants absorb the nutrients from the water. This course will cover the basic science behind these systems and provide resources for sourcing materials for home or commercial use and its application for the average homeowner.

Community Read Join us and our community partners for the third year of our Community Read—a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and then start a conversation. As we watch the progress of the New Heights Fountain Revitalization Project and learn more about the Main Fountain Garden through the Longwood Lecture Series, we have been thinking a lot about the man who created it all, Pierre S. du Pont. This one man has inspired so many people with his vision. Given that context, the powerful idea of “one person to inspire many” is the perfect theme for our 2016 Community Read. Both books feature stories of spirited women who inspired their communities. In Grandma Gatewood’s Walk (2014), Ben Montgomery traces the story of an unlikely heroine. A woman who, to escape personal struggles, in 1955 embarks on a journey of several thousand miles of rugged terrain, and often ill-marked trails…alone…without any equipment…at the age of 67. Achieving more than escape or solitude, she becomes the first woman to through-hike the 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Her act of walking became an inspiration to others. She began to focus much-needed attention on Appalachian Trail conditions and rallied support for the Trail. In On Meadowview Street (2007), author Henry Cole tells the story of a little girl, Caroline, whose inspiration transforms her new neighborhood. Caroline first makes a connection with a small flower. That connection grows and grows. Both are fun and engaging to read. These books inspired us to explore the simple acts of walking in nature and planting a flower (or two)! We want to share both with our community.

Ready, set, SHOP! This unique trip will visit some relatively unknown regional nurseries where participants will find high quality and often hard-to-find plants for their gardens. Many of these nurseries are not open to the public and are specifically selected by David. The only thing really needed for this trip is a little bit of self control among the dynamic selection of woody, annual, and perennial plants at great prices. Purchases will be loaded into a truck and delivered back to Longwood for you to take home that day. It’s fun, it’s hectic, and it’s not for the faint of heart.

Bring your own container to explore ways to ensure that it sparkles on your deck or patio in daylight or after sunset. Karl loves to play with color and texture. You might see rubies in sunlight or diamonds in the dark once you’re done! He’ll guide you through planting a container full of contrasts so that it looks good both day and night. Bring a container that you will be able to lift back into your car once it’s planted, no bigger than 24 inches across the opening.

Dress for all kinds of weather and bring your wish list. Sunscreen and a hat advised. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine.

Once you master the technique, you’ll enjoy practicing it to increase your bulb inventory, especially on expensive bulbs.

What happens when a tree falls at Longwood? Expert arborists will discuss the process of removal and wood preservation. See how Longwood stewards its trees and keeps their legacy alive by transforming the wood into functioning pieces used in the gardens. Before there was overnight shipping, designers created elegant floral arrangements with a combination of flowers and fruits from the garden, fields, and meadows nearby. Constance Spry, a pioneer in local sourcing during the early 20th century, is the perfect example of “blooming where you are planted.” Nancy will tell Spry’s story and introduce you to the beautiful floral designs by Constance Spry. She’ll create arrangements that demonstrate Spry’s influence on design and how her style is resurging in today’s fashion. This demonstration delivers an alternative method from heavily engineered structures and allows the design to showcase the beauty of the flowers themselves. The evening includes a complimentary wine and cheese reception and silent auction for a chance to bid on Nancy’s designs. The Surprising Life of Constance Spry will be available for sale.

Experience the renaissance in sourcing local materials and how it creates a sophisticated marriage of nature and elegance. Two designers from Martha Stewart’s list of Top Designers team up to present a full-day workshop combining their love of seasonal materials and elegant designs. Learn how to develop, design, and harvest from your own cut flower garden from talented designer and floral farmer, Jennie Love of Love ‘n Fresh Flowers. Explore the world of colorful stems, breathtaking flowers, and exciting edibles and blend them in a design with a harmonious connection to the land. As an established innovator in New York City’s competitive floral design world, Ariella Chezar delivers sensuality to her designs that incorporate local materials into works of seasonal floral art.
