Ruth Naomi Floyd Presents Frederick

Douglass Jazz Works An Event Honoring Juneteenth

Friday, June 21

6:30 pm

To commemorate Juneteenth across our region, Voices Underground is proud to present Frederick Douglass Jazz Works—a discussion and jazz performance comprised of vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd’s original compositions paired with words from Douglass’s speeches and writings—in the Open Air Theatre. Illustrated through the artform of jazz improvisational music, the performance illuminates the themes of tragedy, grief, despair, and injustice of American slavery but through the multi-faceted prism of hope, joy, perseverance, and triumph—all with Floyd’s soaring mezzo-soprano voice and Douglass’s own words.
