Our New Meadow Garden— Opening Summer 2014
The Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition (3) History will be made on June 22 when we award the first $40,000 Pierre S. du Pont First Prize at the inaugural Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition to one of our 10 talented finalists. “The Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition recognizes and nurtures the next generation of great organists,” said Longwood Gardens Director Paul B. Redman. “Our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, believed performing arts were an important part of the Gardens experience and installed the first organ at Longwood in 1921. Since then, we’ve continued our commitment to the organ, adding an organ museum in 2005, completing a major restoration of our Aeolian organ in 2011, and now, through the launch of this competition.” All contestants will compete in the preliminary rounds June 18 –19, with the top five contestants competing in the final round on June 22. A distinguished panel of experts will judge the competition including Paul Jacobs, Chair of the Organ Department at The Juilliard School; Thomas Murray, Professor of Music at Yale University; Oliver Condy, Editor of BBC Music Magazine; SophieVéronique Cauchefer-Choplin, Titular of the Grand Orgue of Saint JeanBaptiste de la Salle in Paris; and Peter Richard Conte, Grand Court Organist of the Wanamaker Organ and Principal Organist at Longwood Gardens. (4) Starting July 22, 2013, we will begin construction of our new Meadow Garden—an expanded experience that will grow our existing Meadow from 40 to 86 acres and add colorful, native wildflower plantings, trails, and engaging interpretation and programs throughout the seasons. We plan to realize a 21st century American meadow offering guests a chance to see wildlife, native wildflowers and grasses, plantings, and a historic Colonial home that will tell the story of how the land has evolved from the 1700s. We’ve approached the design of this newest garden using best practices in stewardship while amplifying our horticultural excellence. We are preserving and improving the quality of all its environmental resources—its ecosystems, biodiversity, water, soil, air, and human connections. We will enhance the Meadow Garden experience through tours, classes, and school group programs. We envision the new Meadow Garden highlighting native plants of our region while flourishing within a fabric of ecologically, socially, and culturally rich surroundings. As we create this new garden experience, our existing Meadow will be closed to guests, reopening in summer 2014.
A Dazzling History of Fireworks & Fountains (5) Our founder Pierre S. du Pont was an enthusiastic fireworks impresario whose family had been fascinated with pyrotechnics for nearly two centuries. For his first July 4 celebration in the Gardens in 1907, Pierre ordered six dozen “colored torches” and two dozen “fountains” for $34. Two years later, fireworks were scheduled for the 1909 Garden Party and again for the 1911 and 1912 parties. In 1928, before the main fountains were in operation, Mr. du Pont showed an interest in embellishing the new Open Air Theatre fountains and wrote, “I should like to experiment with the use of fireworks in connection with a fountain display.” The outcome of this experimentation is not known. A half century later, in 1979, Longwood staff members attended a Fête de Nuit at Versailles and were impressed with the potential for combining fireworks with fountains. On June 14, 1980, the first Fireworks & Fountains Show ever at our Gardens was presented (without music) in the Main Fountain Garden. Recorded orchestral music was added in 1981, and since then three to ten shows have been scheduled each year. Highly sophisticated computer systems now run both the fountains and the
