Highlights From Our Gardens
Botanical Bliss
This season we’re highlighting the beauty and bounty of the natural world … made even more extraordinary with our signature A Longwood Christmas magic.
Step into the East Conservatory and find yourself immediately greeted by a textural Sempervivum living tree dressed in hundreds of hardy hens-and-chicks. Look up and you’ll discover a series of suspended gold metal orbs embellished with Amaranthus and other preserved botanicals, beckoning you to venture farther inside. There, you’ll find frosty hues of silver and gold, and two large arrangements of white and pink Phalaenopsis orchids and Spanishmoss helping frame the view. On the opposite end of the Oval Basin, the towering East Tree delights with its glittery palm branches, dried hydrangea flowers, and iridescent touches from its fabric garland to its meticulously wrapped packages.
In the Ballroom, the 18-foot Ballroom Tree is a vision of gold, pearl, silver, champagne, and preserved florals … as well as a place of wonder and imagination, thanks to the nine 12-foot Children’s Christmas Trees lovingly dressed in botanically inspired ornaments crafted by local schools and organizations.
From there, make your way into the Exhibition Hall and decide what you want to marvel at first—the living trees of bromeliads and bold tropicals, the jaw-dropping Fern Floor, or the commanding Exhibition Stage Tree dressed in red, gold, champagne, and silver and wrapped in gold ribbon and dried floral garland. The tree overlooks our spectacular Fern Floor, inspired by living garland and the wind-influenced landscape. Along the length of the floor are six trees draped
in warm white lights among dancing fountains and 12 dramatic curvilinear forms of thousands of poinsettias, twisted Dracaena fragrans ‘Tornado’, and rippled Peperomia caperata ‘Frost’ sweeping around the trees. Hanging baskets of poinsettias, Dracaena fragrans ‘Tornado’, and grass starburst forms playfully suspended above complete the scene with their bursts of color and texture.
Ready to be wowed again? Step into the Music Room and find yourself enveloped in an extravagant floral shop in homage to the beauty and grandeur of the floral arts. Working tables give the space the excitement of a bustling floral shop during the
holidays, while an 18-foot Fraser fir draped in floral elements, an artfully arranged mantel of preserved botanicals, an oversized chair covered in moss and floral embellishments, and much more delight the senses. The Music Room is also a place of high fashion, thanks to its two extraordinary floral dresses. Crafted of preserved plant material and faux accents by students of Drexel University’s Fashion Design program, we are so proud to display these works of art, with one appearing in its own shop window setting.
Plus—like a floral shop—the Music Room will be constantly changing. Each week throughout the season, a different large-scale, fresh-cut floral masterpiece created by a Continuing Education floral design instructor will be prominently displayed in this iconic space. Just outside of the Music Room, you’ll also find a botanical gallery showcasing botanical illustrations created by Longwood’s Continuing Education students, herbarium specimens, and charming German glass mushroom ornaments.
In the Main Conservatory, an 18-foot rotating tree turns heads with its pink and red preserved roses, while floral trees filled with Begonia × hiemalis ‘Barkos’ and Euphorbia pulcherrima ‘Fispue White’ add new dimensions of color and form. You’ll find more botanical elements in our Silver Garden and in our Acacia Passage, where grapevine orbs of creamy white
Phalaenopsis orchids, textural Tillandsia and Spanish-moss, and warm white lines float overhead. Follow those orbs to our Orchid House, dressed for its A Longwood Christmas debut with a series of orbs showcasing a variety of orchid genera.
Looking for even more indoor wonderment? It continues in the Peirce-du Pont House, where you’ll find an abundance of natural elements from sugared fruit garland to harvested elements such as fresh and preserved hops and grapevine, all complemented by beautifully festive trees and plenty of Christmas cheer.
Splendor of the Outdoors
Throughout A Longwood Christmas, the beauty of botanical splendor can be experienced indoors and out. The fun starts the moment you arrive, with our Visitor Center outfitted with flocked trees to meticulously crafted wreaths featuring an assortment of botanicals, from moss and lichen to preserved fruit and mushrooms.
From our Visitor Center, turn right and find yourself in a whole new, artful dimension. In our Rose Arbor, you’ll discover a new art piece perched upon the wishing well, with a botanically inspired pattern that radiates an enchanting shadow throughout the space. Stroll down our illuminated Flower Garden Drive and make your way to the ever-popular Wildlife Tree dripping with grains and seeds placed there daily to feed our resident wildlife. This year, the tree features carved gourd lights punctuated with whimsical patterns. Hanging spheres complete with flame-like bulbs adorn our Small Lake landscape before you arrive at the Canopy Cathedral Treehouse There, you’ll find yourself amid a snowy, simplistic setting inspired by kokedama, the Japanese art and traditional practice of potting plants in a ball of moss and displaying them in a dish, mounted, or suspended in the air.
At the Large Lake, look upon botanically inspired luminaria as they shimmer on the water and in our Italian Water Garden, gaze upon a new icy blue and white lights pattern as you warm up by the fire pit. A meandering path of lit grasses
creates a wave of light along the Meadow Boardwalk as you make your way to our beloved 200-foot-long Meadow Tunnel shimmering with light. The Lookout Loft Treehouse stuns with its monochromatic red theme of handcrafted corn husk flowers, winterberry containers, and rich velvet accents. Our Birdhouse Treehouse enchants with its woodland theme, dressed in moss to winter ferns to warm wood tones, while the neighboring Garden Railway delights with our dozens of locomotives and engines rumbling along 500 feet of track—and our fire pit near our Peirce-du Pont House warms the heart and the hands.
Venture to the western end of our Gardens—past our beloved East Conservatory Plaza orbs—and you’ll find a whole lot of new. Enter the Main Fountain Garden via a new, transformative 150-foot-long Main Fountain Garden Tunnel and in the Main Fountain Garden find lit tree forms throughout the basins and octagons, to a walkthrough tree along the south allée, to lights in our Grotto.
For the first time ever, the PearShaped Basin near the Chimes Tower is home to a 30-foot-tall floating tree, lit in stunningly icy elements. After gazing upon the scene, warm up at the fire pit at Pumphouse Plaza
On your way back to the Visitor Center, don’t miss Paulownia Drive and its suspended lights that help frame the Gardener’s Tree, a 25-foot white fir decorated with blush- and champagnehued ornaments, preserved magnolia flowers, live variegated ivy, and more whimsical touches.
