Festival of Fountains On view May 24–September 1 Festival of Fountains, a season that shines with our stunning Waterlily Display, refreshing fountains, and towering trees. An even brighter summer is in store with so much to celebrate. On June 13 we debut our new Meadow Garden and invite you to explore its 86 acres of beauty telling the story of human interaction with the natural world. Later in June, our Open Air Theatre turns 100 years old, and we’re marking this milestone with Summer Soirée evenings. Lastly, don’t miss our Fireworks & Fountains Shows—this year we’re presenting six of our favorites. Come, celebrate summer with us.
Meadow Garden Opens June 13
Spanning 86 acres, our new Meadow Garden—designed by Jonathan Alderson Landscape Architects and a team of artisans—showcases the best practices in ecological garden design with an artful approach. Explore more than three miles of trails as you discover open, undulating fields, lush wetlands, and diverse habitats for flora and fauna.
Grand Opening Weekend June 13–15, 11 am–3 pm Open up your eyes (and ears) to a world of blooming, buzzing, and flying. Enjoy a nature seek-and-find for kids, learn how this new garden was created on guided walks at 11:30, 12:30, and 1:30, and engage with volunteers and staff who will spark your curiosity about its interconnected ecology.
The Meadow Garden was designed by Jonathan Alderson Landscape Architects, Inc. to highlight the unique topography and to showcase this crucial part of the region’s ecology and history.
Meadow Days August 2, 4–8 pm September 20, 11 am–3 pm October 11, 11 am–3 pm Our experts will be on hand to answer questions as you explore our walking trails, embark on a nature seek-and-find for kids, and more. Meadow Garden walks and hikes: Offered on select days by expert guides Immerse yourself in nature and watch the interaction between wildlife and the habitats in which they reside. Meadow Garden Destinations Inspired by the Brandywine Valley The learning pavilions and bridges in the Meadow Garden are places of discovery and exploration. Their design was inspired by the vernacular of the Brandywine Valley.
The Meadow Bridge presents an opportunity to learn about the entire Meadow Garden, including the plants and wildlife. The Meadow Walk is a wheelchair accessible path that provides an overview of the Meadow Garden experience.
The Hourglass Lake Bridge explores the nearby wetlands, sharing the story of how this habitat is the foundation of a food web that includes insects, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and numerous birds. Visit Forest Edge to uncover the story of the beauty of the surrounding woodlands and the plant and wildlife that reside there.
The Pollinator Overlook explores the important role of pollinators in the Meadow Garden, highlighting the plants that attract each pollinator.
Inside the Webb Farmhouse & Galleries The historic Webb Farmhouse, which has stood on the property since the early 1700s, has been selectively restored by preservationist John Milner to serve as a gallery space to explore the unique beauty of each season and the extraordinary history and evolution of the land.
Meadow Harvest Dinner Friday, October 3, 6–10 pm
Hawk Point sits at one of the highest elevations in the Meadow Garden, providing not only a breathtaking vista with expansive sky, perfect for bird watching, but also the opportunity to learn about and identify the birds that call the Meadow Garden home.
This gourmet dinner brings together the flavors of autumn and the vibrant fall palette of our new Meadow Garden. Your evening begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at our Lookout Loft Treehouse. From there, walk our Meadow Boardwalk and explore the wetlands surrounding the Meadow Garden’s Hourglass Lake Bridge. Our Meadow Garden is on view every day, weather permitting. Explore the 86 acres of our Meadow during Gardens hours until dusk.

Our Meadow Garden is accessible to all guests. A pathway for wheelchairs, scooters, and strollers has been created.

You may wish to pack a water bottle, plant and wildlife I.D. books, and your binoculars. The GardenShop, located in our Visitor Center, carries I.D. books and bottled water, as well as other merchandise. Animal lovers, wildlife is typically more active in the early morning and early evening.

Choose your route before you go out. The Meadow Garden offers multiple ways to explore and enjoy its natural beauty. Take a leisurely walk or extensive hike along the many trails, which total 3 miles. Maps have been placed throughout the Meadow Garden at every trail intersection to help guide explorers.
There are many benches and shaded pavilions throughout the Meadow Garden to sit, relax, and enjoy the expansive views.

Visit the Peirce-du Pont House before you explore the Meadow for timely highlights about what to see.
Wear sturdy shoes for trail walking and plan for weather. Some trails are along rolling terrain and uneven ground. Footwear with good traction is recommended. Be sure to dress appropriately for current and predicted weather conditions.

Respect nature. Stay on designated trails to protect fragile plants and to prevent erosion or wildlife disturbance. Please do not enter the stream or lakes.
Insects, including ticks and mosquitos, are a part of the ecosystem of the Meadow Garden. Stay on pathways and thoroughly check for ticks on your body and clothing after leaving the Meadow.

Highlights from Our Gardens
Roots of our Meadow History Run Deep The landscape of our new Meadow Garden has a story to tell. From its use by the first encampments of Native Americans to the Meadow Garden you see today, this land has changed dramatically over time. Its earliest inhabitants fished and hunted upon forested land. Early settlers cleared the land for farming and grazing, and by the late 19th century local farmers had established the region as a center for agriculture. Agricultural practices increased under the leadership of Pierre S. du Pont, our founder, who planted and maintained orchards, expanded dairying, and raised prizewinning cattle and pigs. After farming ended here in the 1950s, the land was transformed again into a simple grass meadow. Today the Meadow is alive with diverse plant and animal life and plays a critical role in the region’s ecology. It is a home for many bird species, and an anchor of natural habitat for many other species on our property. The Webb Farmhouse has witnessed many significant changes, too. The original Webb Farmhouse was most likely built by one of the original landowners, William Webb (1684–1753), a Quaker farmer and well-known community member. The house was built in two stages—the eastern part was constructed in the early 18th century and an extension
was added to the west more than five decades later. The first floor and the exterior of the house were selectively restored as we prepared to open our new Meadow Garden. John Milner Architects, a local firm, led the restoration of the farmhouse. The exterior of the house was restored to reflect its appearance at the end of the 18th century after the western addition. The first floor of the interior of the house was adapted to serve as gallery space, featuring two unique exhibitions. The West Gallery depicts the Meadow Garden through the seasons, and the East Gallery, which is the oldest section of the House, features the original, large cooking fireplace that was “the heart of the house”. This part of the gallery highlights the history and evolution of land over time, including those who lived on this land. Work of Local Artisans Featured in New Meadow Garden Environmentally friendly, locally sourced materials are used throughout the Meadow Garden. The benches placed throughout the 86 acres were constructed by our own carpenters from the wood of fallen Longwood trees. Around our architectural bridges and pavilions, you will see exquisite
hardscape work that features local Avondale stone. Local masons, carpenters, and craftsmen worked to handcraft the pavilions, stone work, sculptures, and bridges throughout the landscape. A highlight not to be missed, that can be seen at the main entrance of the Meadow, features the old world blacksmith artistry of Artisans of the Anvil in Stroudsburg, PA. Our custom, wrought iron Meadow Garden Gate is hand-forged and made exclusively from repurposed wrought iron materials. Look closely, you will see how we were inspired by the Longwood logo. Even all of the new plantings added throughout the Meadow were grown by local nurseries. More than 100 species of new and augmented plants were added to create “sweeps” of native wildflower plantings meant to introduce variety and color to the landscape each season.
Did You Know: Longwood Offers Fully-online Courses No matter where you live, you can learn at Longwood. Our engaging Continuing Education courses with expert instructors are available with a click of a mouse. This year, we offer 26 diverse hybrid courses and 4 fully-online courses focused on photography, vegetable gardening, and school gardening. In 2015, offerings will be expanded to include Digging Deeper into Vegetable Gardening, Growing Your School Garden, Digital Garden Macro Photography, as well as additional plant identification courses. The online classroom is user-friendly, easy to access, and more flexible than the traditional classroom—allowing students to work through course material at non-conventional times and at their own pace. In addition to our Continuing Education courses, Longwood offers other online learning programs, including live lessons to
school children grades 1–6 and senior living communities through interactive videoconferencing. Our on-site interactive videoconferencing studio is also used for connecting our staff with colleges and universities across the country to discuss careers in public horticulture. Open Air Theatre Turns 100 Our Open Air Theatre, one of the most magnificent and unique theatre gardens in the world, will mark 100 years of performances on June 24, 2014. Over the past century, more than 1,500 shows have entertained hundreds of thousands of audiencegoers. Inspired by outdoor European theatres and his life-long love of the performing arts, our founder Pierre S. du Pont designed and built the Open Air Theatre in 1913. The theatre debuted at the 1914 Garden Party with a dance spectacular—and thus began our 100-year performing arts tradition. The jets of our Open Air Theatre were first incorporated into a Garden Party performance in 1915. From 1926–1927 underground dressing rooms were built, the fountains were expanded to 750 jets, and 600 colorized lights were installed. It is estimated that more than one million people have experienced the magic of the Open Air Theatre over the past century—and it is a tradition Longwood continues today by presenting more than 40 performances every summer.

Walk of Fame Spotlights Stars This summer explore our new interpretative display in the Open Air Theatre to learn about the design, history, and story of 100 years of performing arts in our Gardens. As part of the experience, visit our “Walk of Fame” to see the names of past performers engraved into the bricks near the Theatre Garden. The Walk includes John Philip Sousa, Martha Graham, The Beach Boys, B.B. King, Tony Bennett, and even our Founder Pierre S. du Pont, who, on occasion, would help construct scenery for performances at Longwood.

Autumn’s Colors is unlike any other time of year at Longwood—it is filled with crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, and a bounty of color. Our new Meadow Garden is spectacular in the fall, and its autumn palette features native asters and meadow grasses, coupled with the foliage of maples and oaks. The art of horticulture takes center stage in our Conservatory in October when we unveil more than 5,000 chrysanthemums trained into exquisite shapes and forms as part of Chrysanthemum Festival. November brings the return of our Night of 1,000 Lights, a lantern festival celebrating the Asian heritage of chrysanthemums. Autumn splendor awaits.
