Gardens by Day Light by Night



Festival of Fountains On View May 5–September 25 This summer, Longwood is beautiful gardens by day and the magic of Light: Installations by Bruce Munro at night. Stroll through our Gardens awash in brilliant blooms, and discover a starlit getaway with our Illuminated Fountain Performances and live music in the Beer Garden. Beginning June 30, experience the wonder that is Light, on view Thursday through Sunday evenings through October 30. From vibrant summer blooms, to dancing fountains, to dazzling artistry, everything but the everyday is here.

Immerse yourself in the dazzling artistry and infinite imagination of artist Bruce Munro with this entirely new, entirely breathtaking exhibition. From the luminous Field of Light stretching across the Large and Small Lake landscape … to a flamboyance of 1,000 flamingoes wading near our Chimes Tower … to an immersive sensory environment inspired by our Waterlily Display in the Exhibition Hall … discover eight installations spanning our indoor spaces and outdoor vistas.

Experience Light, complemented by live music in the Beer Garden and Illuminated Fountain Performances Thursday through Sunday evenings beginning June 30.

Light Nights Join us the second Friday of each month for our fantastically fun themed Light Nights, all inspired by Light and complete with live music, fountain performances, family activities, and more.

Make a Splash … and Catch Every Beat

Our iconic Main Fountain Garden dances, soars, and delights with more performances than ever before this year … and with our newly enhanced and expanded sound system, you won’t miss a beat. It’s the splashiest summer yet. Free timed Member reservations required May 5 through June 29 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays if arriving after 3 pm and June 30 through October 30 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays if arriving after 3 pm. Fountain performances free with Gardens Admission. Check longwoodgardens.org for performance details, as well as real-time ticket and reservation availability prior to your visit. Chairs and blankets are permitted in the Gardens beginning at 12 pm on Illuminated Fountain Performance dates. Chairs and blankets may be used on the lawn areas throughout the Main Fountain Garden to enjoy the Illuminated Fountain Performance.

World Topiary Day Thursday, May 12–Saturday, May 14 Join us as we celebrate World Topiary Day along with gardens around the globe. Founded in 2021 by Levens Hall and Gardens (Cumbria, UK)—home to the oldest topiary garden in the world—this May 12 occasion (which we’re celebrating May 12, 13, and 14) recognizes the beauty, art, and joys of topiary. Here at Longwood, explore our Topiary Garden’s whimsical forms, learn how we’ve meticulously trained the yews over many decades, and get an up-close look at the 35 specimens throughout the garden. Horticulture experts will be on hand from 10 am to 4 pm each day to answer your topiary questions.


May Welcome summer with a whole lot of let’s-kick-off-the-season fun. Our Fountains Return Our Main Fountain Garden awakens May 5 with the return of our refreshing daytime shows and our colorful Illuminated Fountain Performances, which run each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening throughout the month of May. Turn to the Make a Splash pages of this brochure to learn more. This month, our new Country Roads fountain performance debuts on May 27, featuring hits from such country superstars as Loretta Lynn and Kenny Chesney. Mother’s Day Weekend Thursday, May 5–Sunday, May 8 Gather the family for spectacular evening fountain performances Thursday through Saturday when the Gardens are open until 10 pm, or enjoy a Sunday stroll when the Gardens are open until 6 pm. Free timed Member reservations are required after 3 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, except for Gardens Premium Members and Innovators; no timed Member reservations are required on Sunday.

Garden Chat: Longwood’s Native Orchid Collection Tuesday, May 24, 4:30 pm and 6 pm Wednesday, May 25, 5 pm Gardens Premium Members are invited to join us here in our Gardens as Associate Director of Conservation, Plant Breeding and Collections Peter Zale and Research Specialist Ashley Clayton give an up-close look at our native orchid collection. Explore our orchid nursery and learn about interesting new plants, breeding efforts, and the local to global impacts of Longwood’s research and conservation program. Then, learn how you can be involved in orchid conservation in your own backyard! Free for Gardens Premium Members. Advance registration required; space is limited.

Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 Join us in honoring the bicentennial of the birth of visionary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. To mark this anniversary, the National Association for Olmsted Parks is leading the nationwide Olmsted 200 celebration in recognition of Olmsted’s enduring influence—including the Inspired by Olmsted carillon competition. Here at Longwood, enjoy Chimes Tower tours, as well as a carillon concert each day by the competition’s award-winning carillonneurs Geert D’Hollander and Ellen Dickinson as they present their compositions inspired by the life and legacy of Olmsted.
