Autumn Takes Shape On View October 3–November 17 Autumn is here … and with it comes a debut exhibit, with our masterful Blooms & Bamboo: Chrysanthemum and Ikebana Sogetsu Artistry. Prepare to be wowed by towering bamboo art forms and enchanting arrangements by international artists. Autumn also brings a painted landscape of ever-changing color, imaginative play with pumpkins and our Garden Railway, and creative chrysanthemums meticulously grown into gorgeous forms throughout our Conservatory. Our Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum—a single plant bearing more than 1,000 perfect blooms on a single stem—makes its dazzling debut October 24. Autumn at Longwood … a work of art.
Blooms & Bamboo Chrysanthemum and Ikebana Sogetsu Artistry On View October 3–November 17
Masterworks of Ikebana—the timehonored Japanese art of flower arrangement—along with masterfully grown chrysanthemums take center stage this fall. These larger-than-life Ikebana forms—a first for Longwood and never before seen in the States— are showcased amid Ikebana arrangements throughout the Conservatory, crafted by designers near and abroad … as well as the jaw-dropping splendor of thousands of blooming chrysanthemums trained into imaginative shapes by Longwood’s own horticulture masters.
Headmaster Akane Teshigahara of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana has created towering displays of bamboo and natural elements exclusively designed for our Conservatory. Marvel at these art forms of twisting, spiraling, and intertwining bamboo reaching heights of 15 feet … but bound only by the limits of your imagination.

Highlights from Our Gardens An Unprecedented Experience Blooms & Bamboo: Chrysanthemum and Ikebana Sogetsu Artistry The traditional art of Japanese floral design, Ikebana serves as an expression of Japan’s deep connection with nature. Spanning more than 600 years of history, this art features hundreds of different Ikebana schools, each developing its own forms that depict the ideal of beauty and grace. One such school is the Sogetsu School. Built on the belief that Ikebana is a creative art in which one can express his or her originality—and that anyone can enjoy anytime, anywhere, and using any material—Sogetsu is one of the newest and most modern schools of Ikebana. The Sogetsu School was founded in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara and is now under the guidance of his granddaughter, Headmaster Akane Teshigahara, who designed the two bamboo art forms for the exhibit, and will be traveling to Longwood this fall. Teshigahara assumed the Headmaster role in 2001 and has since engaged in a variety of creative activities based on the Sogetsu School’s focus on free expression. “Although I have created bamboo installations in a variety of styles in Japan and around the world for over 20 years,” Teshigahara shares, “the two installations at Longwood will be the greatest and finest of all, both in terms of scale and bamboo manipulation techniques.” For her two
bamboo installations exclusively designed for display at Longwood, Teshigahara and her team will be twisting, spiraling, and intertwining 635 rods of bamboo to create natural works of art reaching heights of 15 feet … making it the largest display Teshigahara has ever designed in the States, and one in which guests can even walk through. Teshigahara’s inspiration for the installations at Longwood is to “bring to life the maximum beauty delineated from bamboo’s linearity and curves. One installation will feature a complex structure with curved elements symbolizing the birth of an unknown life,” Teshigahara muses. “The other will demonstrate the beauty of simplicity derived from bamboo’s linearity and depict a pulsing life connecting to the future.” Teshigahara also has a clear intention for what she’d like guests to experience when interacting with her art. “I would like visitors to immerse themselves and experience the installations without preconceived notions. I believe that people can have a true dialogue with plants … not just with the beauty itself, but with amazement, humor, and depth.” Blooms & Bamboo: Chrysanthemum and Ikebana Sogetsu Artistry is on view October 3 through November 17. 2019 Organ Competition Winner to Make Longwood Solo Debut The youngest competitor to claim the top prize in the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition, Sebastian Heindl, 21, certainly has a bright future ahead of him as well as an impressive resume on which to build. Not only garnering the $40,000 Pierre S. du Pont First Prize, which included a contract with Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists and a 2019–20 performance at Longwood, Heindl also won the competition’s Audience Choice Prize and American Guild of Organists Philadelphia Chapter Prize. “The Longwood Gardens Organ Competition is truly unique and inspiring,” says Heindl. “I have never been in a competition like it. It is all about creativity and pure musical beauty.” Heindl received his fundamental musical education as a chorister in
St. Thomas Boys Choir Leipzig, contributed as a youngster organist to the BBC TV documentary Bach: A Passionate Life with Sir John Eliot Gardiner at the famous Trost organ in Altenburg, and recorded his debut CD at age 17 at Magdeburg Cathedral. A student of church music at the University of Music in Leipzig, Heindl also won the 2017 Northern Ireland International Organ Competition. Held every three years and open to contestants ages 18 to 30, the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition began in 2013 and has welcomed musicians from around the world to compete on The Longwood Organ. Now embarking on our 13-month immersive residential program that develops global leaders in the field of public horticulture, our third Fellows cohort includes Shawna Jones from the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in Santa Fe, NM; Abra Lee from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA; Becky Paxton from UNC Chapel Hill; Mae Lin Plummer from The Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC; Barbara Wheeler from the Dunedin Botanic Garden in New Zealand; and Nanette Wraith from Keyneston Mill in Dorset, United Kingdom.

At Family Story Time, young guests can enjoy nature-based stories in our Lookout Loft Treehouse amid the beauty of the surrounding forest. Storytelling, songs, and puppets encourage children to discover the joys of nature, language, and literature. Story time is designed for children ages 3–5. Meadow Garden Wildflower Walks start at the Meadow Garden entrance near the Peirce-du Pont House before heading to our fully accessible Meadow boardwalk introducing you to our beautiful Meadow Garden. From there, you may continue with our wildflower experts on our meadow trails discovering what’s in bloom. During our Forest Ecology Walk, spend an hour walking with a member of our Natural Lands Team and discover how Longwood stewards its woodlands using shortand long-term planning strategies. Learn more about our adaptive management strategies including invasive species management and native forest plant and wildlife community restoration techniques. Birds of Longwood Walks, Beginner Bird Hikes, and Meadow Birding Hikes require outdoor clothing and shoes/boots. Binoculars are recommended. Is the class you want sold out? A Longwood Christmas

Our holiday display inspires and dazzles … and begins a week earlier this year, allowing for even more holiday magic. We celebrate the many shapes of the season with a display that is both nostalgic and inventive, inspired by the contours of traditional holiday favorites from poinsettias to pine cones to snowflakes, as well as the unique forms found in our grand Conservatory. It’s shaping up to be A Longwood Christmas to remember.
Visiting as a Member? Member Reservations Required Every Day After 2 pm Members may visit anytime, but require free timed Member reservations every day during A Longwood Christmas if visiting after 2 pm. Gardens Premium Members and those included in their Membership level do not require reservations. Member reservations are limited and sell out is likely. With a timed Member reservation, you may enter the Gardens as early as a half-hour before or as late as a half-hour after your entry time. Later or earlier arrivals cannot be accommodated. You may stay as long as you wish once you enter the Gardens.
Member Guests & General Admission Buy Before You Arrive • Timed Tickets Required • Tickets Limited Admission to A Longwood Christmas is by Timed Admission Ticket only with tickets issued for a specific date and time. Guests not included in a Membership require a Timed Admission Ticket. We cannot accommodate a Member’s request for tickets if we are sold out. Purchase in advance as tickets sell out.
Using Complimentary Guest Tickets? Complimentary Guest Tickets are not valid on blackout days (peak days) during A Longwood Christmas. Blackout days are all Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during A Longwood Christmas through January 1, and every day December 26–January 1. Check your tickets as restrictions may apply. Parking Longwood offers free parking and transportation is provided between remote parking and the Gardens.

For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following:
October 28–November 21 Daily from 9 am–6 pm Our Conservatory will be closed November 18–21 as we prepare for A Longwood Christmas. Our outdoor gardens will remain open.
– Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a firstcome basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted. – Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
Gardens Admission Adults: $25 Seniors (62+) and College Students with student ID: $22 Youth (5–18): $13 Children 4 & under: Free Members: Free Members require free timed reservations if arriving after 3 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through October 26. Dining at The Terrace The Terrace is a Certified Green Restaurant through the Green Restaurant Association and offers these dining experiences: The Café Enjoy casual fare made from fresh seasonal ingredients. 1906 Savor this artful, full-service dining experience. Reservations can be made via longwoodgardens.org/ dine or by calling 610.388.1000. Beer Garden Through October 26, dine under the stars with family and friends while enjoying Victory Brewing Company selections.
