Highlights from Our Gardens Experience Our New “Fountains Then and Now” Performance Every Day (1) One of the exciting new fountain performances that will debut this summer is “Fountains Then and Now,” which combines informative narration and an exciting demonstration of the new features of our Main Fountain Garden. You can see this special show daily at 11 am and 3 pm, and at 7 pm Thursday—Saturday evenings. The show begins with a bit of history about the fountain garden, shares some eye-opening facts and figures, then ends with a choreographed display showcasing our newest whirling, revolving, and dancing nozzles, culminating in our tallest jet shooting 175 feet in the air.

New Main Fountain Garden Exhibit Experiences (2) As part of our season of celebration, two exciting Main Fountain Garden exhibits will debut May 27. Inside our Historic Pumphouse visit our Pump Room & Gallery—a new destination within the Main Fountain Garden. We’re pulling back the curtain and inviting guests to see and experience the original machinery, drawings, and artifacts that depict the vision and design of these magnificent fountains. Learn more about the creation and engineering behind our original Main Fountain Garden. Discover why our Main Fountain Garden is an engineer’s garden and step back in time and see the original 18 pumps that powered the fountains from 1931 to 2014. In the original Pump Room, we have taken every opportunity to preserve and protect the original character and equipment, restoring it to its original period of significance.

This exciting exhibit also highlights how our Main Fountain Garden works today—which is at the cutting edge of design and engineering—just as it was when our founder Pierre S. du Pont first turned it on in 1931. In the Gallery, formerly the original electrical room that ran the garden, we are excited to showcase a special photographic exhibition by NYCbased photographer, Daniel Traub. Titled “Tunnel Series,” the photographs look further behind the scenes—documenting the hidden tunnel system that houses the extraordinary technology and mechanical components in the garden. A second new exhibit, “Water & Wonder: The Spectacular Main Fountain Garden Shows,” takes center stage in our Music Room. Learn how unique a treasure our Main Fountain Garden is—it’s one of only a few destinations in the world where you can experience the beauty of an illuminated fountain show in an extraordinary garden setting. Guests can delve into the history and grandeur of our fountain performances, including our Fireworks & Fountains Shows. The exhibit features experts from the field and our own fountain choreographers sharing insight into the creation process. Guests can explore the new technologies used to design our 2017 fountain performances, and see how shows have changed over time. Through images of past shows, artifacts from our Archives, and exclusive film footage, explore the history, choreography, and new technologies of the ultimate garden spectacle.

Preserving a Boxwood Tradition

Horticulture Revitalization at Carpinus Allée The fountains are not the only stars of the Main Fountain Garden. The horticulture shines as well. One area in particular is Carpinus Allée, formerly known as Caryopteris Allée. Carpinus Allée features 360 European hornbeam Carpinus betulus, AngloJapanese yew Taxus × media ‘Moon’, catmint Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’, and Blackberry-lily Iris domestica. This reimagined space leads guests to one of our historic love temples and a stairway that provides new access to the Main Fountain Garden. The tightly pruned European hornbeam hedges, which will mark the new boundaries of our Main Fountain Garden, vary in height from 3'– 8'—providing a European feel to the garden. New walking paths will give our guests new vantage points and a more immersive Main Fountain Garden experience.

Longwood founder Pierre S. du Pont inherited a collection of boxwoods in July 1906 when he purchased the property and continued to collect specimens throughout his life, quickly gaining a reputation as a boxwood enthusiast. In the 1930s, he used boxwoods to outline the exquisite fountains, allées, and walkways of our original Main Fountain Garden. Almost a century later, more than 2,600 boxwoods (Buxus microphylla var. japonica ‘Green Beauty’) have been planted in the Main Fountain Garden, honoring Mr. du Pont’s original design intent. As they mature, the boxwood will be trained into billowing, sculptural-like forms, adding even more visual interest to this grand garden.
