Read. Think. Engage. Join Our Community Read

This winter we join local libraries and community partners for the fourth year of our Community Read–a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and start a conversation. As we anticipate the reopening of the Main Fountain Garden, we are reminded of Pierre du Pont’s application of innovative design and technology when creating this engineering marvel. Therefore it is fitting for this year’s community read to explore—and explain—the science, technology, and engineering concepts inherent in our world today. #CommunityRead Follow us @LongwoodGardens and share your ideas using the hashtag #CommunityRead.

Community Read Events at Longwood The Way Orchids Work Thursday, March 23 9 am–12 pm Learn how orchids work and about their specialized adaptations, then participate in an orchid sketching exercise. Advance Registration and Fee Required: $49 longwoodgardens.org/enroll Includes a copy of The Way Things Work Now

The Way Astronomy Works Friday, April 21 6:30–9 pm Join famed Franklin Institute Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts on a journey through the evolution of space exploration. Following the lecture, staff from The Franklin Institute and local amateur astronomers will provide telescopes and instruction for you to view the night sky above the Meadow Garden. David Macaulay will also be on hand to sign his book, The Way Things Work Now. Advance Registration and Fee Required: $49 longwoodgardens.org/enroll

A Community Conversation with David Macaulay Saturday, April 22 7–9 pm Hear David Macaulay speak about his career as an author and illustrator, and the inspiration behind his role of “Master Explainer.” Join with fellow readers to celebrate and discuss the book. Mr. Macaulay will be joined by P.S. du Pont Fellow Colvin Randall, who will discuss Pierre du Pont’s passion for good engineering. A book signing follows the conversation. The Way Things Work Now explains complex processes in a humorous and accessible style, accompanied by engaging illustrations. Author David Macaulay’s idea for the book series stems from an innate curiosity to know how things work, and wanting to leave readers with a sense of curiosity to know more. In Rosie Revere, Engineer author Andrea Beaty tells the story of Rosie, a little girl with dreams of becoming an engineer. “Where some people see rubbish, Rosie Revere sees inspiration. Alone in her room at night, shy Rosie constructs great inventions from odds and ends.”

Highlights from Our Gardens Silver Garden's Pop of Color During Orchid Extravaganza

Tropical Slipper Orchids Debut in Acacia Passage

(1) Above the winding walkway of the Silver Garden hang more than 200 Vanda orchids resplendent in a mixed color palette. Inspired by aerial floral designs, the display gives guests the experience of walking under the epiphytic Vanda that grow with their cascading roots exposed. The installation process required our metal artisans to create a horizontal wire framework from which our gardeners strategically placed each plant. The Silver Garden mimics the dry, arid landscapes found in Mediterranean and desert regions with plants requiring significantly less water than orchids. As a result, the suspended orchids are deliberately placed above the walkway to prevent overwatering of the surrounding garden plants. Vanda root systems are watered daily with a mist nozzle and thrive best in a greenhouse environment.

(2) Our Acacia Passage is named for the cinnamon wattle (Acacia leprosa) trees. They were planted and trained to arch over the walkway by our founder Pierre S. du Pont himself. During Orchid Extravaganza our Acacia Passage is in bloom, where you can discover delicate cascading branches adorned with feathery foliage and fluffy yellow flowers. Both the flowers and leaves of this unusual acacia give off a memorable scent. New to the display, exclusively for Orchid Extravaganza, the Acacia Passage will showcase a total of 162 Paphiopedilum, or tropical slipper orchids, planted in 18 raised planters.

Prep Your Home Garden for Spring Though the winter months are upon us, there is always something to be done to prepare home gardens for spring blooms and summer harvests. Land Steward Tom Brightman recommends home gardeners leaving fallen leaves in their yards and garden spaces if one of the goals of their garden is the protection of native insects and pollinators. Leaving fallen leaves on the ground in native perennial beds and woodlands protects many beneficial insects over the winter months. Senior Gardener Roger Davis says until the ground is completely frozen, it is not too late to plant bulbs for beautiful blooming flowers in March and April. Winter is
