Orchid Extravaganza On View January 18–March 22 Opposites attract this season. With bold, vivacious hues found in a sea of golden Oncidium to swirls of salmon Phalaenopsis to a tapestry of vibrant Vanda, our Conservatory is a vision of color and texture. Vivid baskets, columns, orbs, and more fanciful forms elevate our indoor world of whimsy and warmth. Our outdoor gardens illustrate the subtle beauty of the winter landscape, where the dramatic silhouettes of majestic trees and delicate grasses together paint a setting of quiet tranquility. Inside and out, wondrous winter awaits.
Expect the Unexpected Showcasing the Diversity of Orchids
We strive to deliver innovative displays while elevating the art and science of horticulture. This year’s Orchid Extravaganza display is no exception, thanks to its array of orchids that are not only beautiful, but also help showcase the diversity of the orchid family. This year, our Exhibition Hall is adorned with custom-made containers of cascading white Phalaenopsis Sogo Yukidian ‘V3’ and purple Phalaenopsis Tai Lin Red Angel ‘V31’ hybrid orchids. ‘V3’ and ‘V31’ orchids boast unusually long flower spikes that hold their flowers for a long time, allowing for prolonged, breathtaking beauty. Producing these special plants is a highly specialized process practiced by only a small number of expert growers in Taiwan. They take four years to grow, as the plants need to produce at least 10 leaves before they are allowed to flower. The plants are grown at elevated temperatures, held steady day and night, as well as fed heated water and fertilizer in order to prevent flowering and build energy in the plant. Once the plant has reached its necessary size, flowering is initiated in two distinct stages and temperature is adjusted to a moderate level, with day and night fluctuations. As the flower spikes develop (taking 4 to 5 months before the first flower opens),
the plants are placed facing south and their spikes trained along a curved metal stake to yield their amazing shape. This year, you’ll be treated to a sea of Cymbidium, as these dramatic, showy orchids in delightful hues of orange, yellow, and green grace our Conservatory. Native to tropical and subtropical Asia and Australia, Cymbidium are known to carry many long-lasting flowers on each stem. They also come in a variety of colors, are often used in cut arrangements, and are identified by their grassy leaves. While Cymbidium are among the most common orchid genera, these bombastic showstoppers require a great deal of care and attention, given their ability to grow incredibly large, forming large clumps quickly. Cymbidium from our collection will also be showcased in our North Passage, Acacia Passage, and our rotating display of orchids in our East Conservatory. This rotating display showcases unusual orchids from our collection, further highlighting the diversity and varied beauty of orchids, all throughout the season.

Wild World of Plants Join Our Community Read
Along with our community partners—gardens, museums, and conservation organizations, as well as many public libraries—we are proud to offer the seventh year of our Community Read, a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and start a conversation. Throughout winter and spring, we ask readers to push the boundaries of what they thought they knew about botany and dive into the wild world of plants. This year’s books include our first-ever science-fiction selection, a nonfiction showcase of bizarre plants from around the globe, and a reimagined folk tale for our youngest readers.
Get the Books and Start Reading! This year’s selections challenge the human understanding of plant life and inspire us to examine the amazing capabilities of plants. A tale of first contact, Sue Burke’s debut science-fiction novel, Semiosis, follows a group of colonists forced to land on a planet they aren’t prepared for, where plants are the dominant life forms and humans are their pawns. In Weird Plants, designed for middle school through adult readers, author Chris Thorogood’s jarring illustrations and botanical expertise help mysterious plants from across the globe leap off the page. For our youngest readers, The Enormous Potato by Aubrey Davis is a humorous tale of a farmer who needs help harvesting a giant potato. Community Read Events Attack of the Plant Nerds: Science Fiction vs. Science Fact Book Talk and Signing with Sue Burke, Marc Hachadourian, Bridget Wosczyna, and Peter Zale March 28, 6:30–8:30 pm Longwood Ballroom Join Semiosis author Sue Burke and a team of plant nerds for an evening exploring plants both real and imaginary. Burke will discuss the inspiration behind the world of Pax, as well as answer questions regarding her next sci-fi novel, Interference. The plant nerds round out the evening by sharing tales of their favorite odd and unusual plants. Following the talk, continue the conversation in our Conservatory. Evolution of Killer Plants April 13, 6–7 pm National Mechanics, Philadelphia From cryptic parasitic broomrapes (Orobanche) found in the far reaches of Nepal to the myriad forms of tropical pitcher-plant (Nepenthes) in Borneo, author Chris Thorogood shares insight into the mysterious world of “green predator” plants found throughout the world in this lecture in Philadelphia. Highlights from Our Gardens
Our Fellows are on the Move Our Fellows are going places! Our 2019–20 Fellows have finalized their two-month field placement locations, which will take them to gardens around the world as part of their 13-month Fellows leadership development program. In February, Nanette Wraith and Barbara Wheeler will head to The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL for separate projects; Shawna Jones to National Parks Board Singapore; Becky Paxton to The Huntington in San Marino, CA; Mae Lin Plummer to Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, UK; and Abra Lee to Chateaux Villandry in Villandry, France.
Field placement is an integral component of the Fellows Program, guided by the legacy of Longwood founder and visionary business leader Pierre S. du Pont and grounded in the disciplines of leadership, organizational behavior, and nonprofit management. During their field placements, our Fellows will study and learn about their host organizations’ structure, culture, and approach to staff management and leadership. Along the way, the Fellows will develop a deep understanding of leadership, immersing themselves in projects that help each of their host organizations achieve strategic goals.

Take a Riviera Holiday in Philadelphia Take a journey through the story of Longwood’s plant exploration program with our exhibit at the 2020 Philadelphia Flower Show from February 29 through March 8. Located in the Philadelphia Flower Show’s Horticourt, Longwood’s exhibit celebrates the flower show’s Riviera Holiday theme—inspired by the world’s exotic Mediterranean gardens—with a focus on the impact of our plant exploration program. The exhibit will showcase the achievements of one of our very first plant exploration trips: a 1957 journey throughout the Mediterranean that covered 15,000 miles and resulted in 2,800 plant collections. Visitors to the exhibit can view some of the plants resulting from this trip—along with
a stunning display of succulents— and learn about our plant exploration program’s past, present, and future, and its lasting impact on the field of horticulture. “Longwood is proud to support the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society by creating a unique exhibit for the Philadelphia Flower Show,” shares Longwood’s Vice President of Horticulture Sharon Loving. “Plant exploration is the key to Longwood’s beautiful, diverse displays and we’re delighted to share that story with the Philadelphia Flower Show audience. Scout Programs Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups are invited to engage in a Longwood-led program and earn a Longwood Fun Patch. Scout groups participate in fun, hands-on activities throughout the Gardens to meet partial requirements for specific badges, while learning about Longwood’s history, beauty, and more. Juniors: Flowers Legacy Naturalist Badge Learn about Longwood’s diverse garden areas and unique flowering plants growing year-round in our 4-acre Conservatory. Cadettes: Trees Legacy Badge Stroll through the deciduous and coniferous trees and learn about the deep history of Longwood’s property.

Discover native plants that support our ecosystem, build a bug house, and plant a pollinator garden.
Plotting the Gardens July 27–31 Use your wayfinding skills to uncover hidden gems, geographic features, and natural patterns as you navigate the Gardens using paper maps, digital maps, and our interactive map. New locations visited each day will inspire garden-focused art, science investigations, and craft activities. View Finders August 3–7 See the Meadow Garden, Peirce’s Woods, and Main Fountain Garden from a new perspective. Use digital cameras to capture the Gardens and transform those images into multimedia art, paintings, and more. Digital cameras will be provided. A Taste of Nature August 10–14 Learn how to harvest from the garden to make easy-to-prepare, healthy snacks, and scented homemade concoctions. Noa with Gil Dor March 19 8 pm Known for her artistry and commitment to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Noa and her long-standing musical collaborator and guitarist Gil Dor present a diverse and inspiring repertoire. Performing in English, Hebrew, and Yemenite, Noa and Dor build from the message of Noa’s Letters to Bach, a 12-piece selection of Bach’s instrumental music with Noa’s contemporary lyrics. Fireworks & Fountains Shows Tickets On Sale April 6 at 9 am Our Fireworks & Fountains Shows light up the night sky on six dazzling evenings: May 24, July 2, July 18, August 8, September 6, and September 26. A special event ticket is required for Fireworks & Fountains Shows; admission to Fireworks & Fountains Shows is not included in Gardens Membership.

For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers on a first-come basis. Children’s strollers are available for a fee (complimentary for Members). Supply limited, reservations not accepted. Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather. Parking Longwood offers free parking for our guests.
