2013–2014 Performance Series Our founder Pierre S. du Pont believed in the idea of The Garden as Theatre—and we continue this vision today by presenting spectacular jazz, organ, classical, and world music performances. This year we’re introducing 12 new artists to Longwood and welcoming back the 2013 Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition winner for his debut concert on The Longwood Organ. As we look ahead, a shining summer awaits. Join us as we open our new Meadow Garden and celebrate a century of performances when our Open Air Theatre turns 100.

One of the world’s most celebrated pianists, André Watts burst upon the music scene at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People’s Concerts. More than 45 years later, he remains one of today’s most beloved superstars and in 2011 received the National Medal of Arts. His program will include J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 10, No. 3 and works by Mozart and Liszt.

The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass Honoring the 200th Anniversary of Wagner & Verdi’s births Tuesday, October 29 8 pm

The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass is composed of America’s top brass musicians dedicated to bringing the joyous experience of great music to a wide range of audiences. A veritable “dream team” of virtuoso brass players, members of the group have performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Canadian Brass. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Saturday, November 23 8 pm The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele. A performance by this orchestra is funny, virtuosic, twanging, foot-stomping, and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar” and a menagerie of voices. Going from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks, the Orchestra takes us on “a world tour with only hand luggage.” Performance: Exhibition Hall $38 Reserved seating $32 Members

Making Spirits Bright Christmas with Ann Hampton Callaway Thursday, December 5 8 pm Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the finest singer-songwriters of our time. She dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. Founded in 1995, the Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style—a style that is strongly rhythmic, melodic, and filled with dynamic contrast. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. It’s truly organic. Joining pianist Roberts are bassist Rodney Jordan and the uniquely talented Jason Marsalis on drums. “We call him the ‘genius of the modern piano,’ because he is.” —Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Isabelle Demers is Organ Professor and Head of the Organ Program at Baylor University in Texas. A native of Québec, she is rapidly becoming recognized as one of North America’s most virtuosic organists. Her concert at the 2010 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists, in Washington, D.C., was received with great acclaim not only by critics, who deemed it “one of the most outstanding events of the convention” (The American Organist), but also by the standing-room-only audience, which called her back five times.

Venice Baroque Orchestra Thursday, February 20 8 pm Founded in 1997 by Baroque scholar and harpsichordist Andrea Marcon, Venice Baroque Orchestra is one of the premier ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. The orchestra has received wide critical acclaim for its concert and opera performances throughout the world. The program will include Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester Thursday, March 6 8 pm Slick and nostalgic, yet unmistakably modern, Germany’s Max Raabe & Palast Orchester debut at Longwood Gardens. The ever-elegant, debonair Raabe and his 12-piece orchestra embody the halcyon days of 1920s and 30s Weimar Berlin in all its high style and musical glory. It’s all there—dance hall songs, couplets, Cuban rumbas, happy foxtrots, and stylish tangos, as Raabe in his perfect tux captures the essence of the cabaret singer, the bel canto hero, the falsetto of ragtime, and the timbre of early pre-war jazz. Organist Brian Jones is Emeritus Director of Music and Organist at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston (1984–2004).
Legendary classical guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad—known as the Assad Brothers—are joined by their sisters and are performing as a quintet. This Brazilianborn family is known for their guitar innovation, ingenuity, and expression. The band presents a concert that blends classical music with their Brazilian heritage.

Van Cliburn Gold Medalist: Vadym Kholodenko Tuesday, March 18 8 pm Winner of the coveted gold medal at the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Vadym Kholodenko captured the attention of jury, audience, and critics alike for “mesmerizing and exhilarating” performances that brought the crowd to their feet,“[cheering] him like a rock star” (Cincinnati Enquirer). Anonymous 4 Grace and Glory Thursday, April 3 8 pm Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition. Anonymous 4 travels from old world to new: the first half of this program contains motets & chansons from 13th-century France, and the second half is a collection of American traditional hymns and songs. Benjamin Sheen Friday, May 2 8 pm In June 2013, Benjamin Sheen, 23, was crowned the winner of the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition receiving the Pierre S. du Pont First Prize of $40,000 and a contract with Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists. Sheen is a Juilliard School masters graduate studying with Paul Jacobs, a graduate of Oxford University with a first-class honors degree in music, and is increasingly gaining recognition as an international concert organist. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a recipient of the prestigious Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal for 2011. Performance: The Ballroom $25 Reserved seating $21 Members

Open Air Theatre 100th Anniversary Celebration Summer 2014
This June our Open Air Theatre celebrates a century of fountains and performing arts! Over the past 100 years hundreds of musical, dance, and theater performances have graced the Open Air Theatre stage. Join us for special performances to commemorate this milestone as we celebrate our artistic roots. Our Open Air Theatre was inspired by the Villa Gori Garden Theatre near Siena, Italy. The Open Air Theatre debuted with a performance of period dances followed by garden party dance music for guests provided by a local military band on June 24, 1914.
