Highlights from Our Gardens Meet Clivia ‘Longwood Sunset’ (1) We are pleased to introduce the fifth cultivar release from our clivia breeding program. A flower color breakthrough in our 40-year-long breeding program, Clivia miniata ‘Longwood Sunset’ was selected for its uniquely pastel-colored flowers of soft apricot tones with a contrasting butter yellow and white throat. The large individual flowers exhibit overlapping tepals with slightly reflexed tips with a darker orange edge. The flowers are born on 25-inch scapes and held in large 8-to-10-inch umbels above the deep green foliage. Blooms appear February through March and have a pleasant, light fragrance. This previously unnamed seedling was an award winner at past Clivia Society shows and is available for purchase for $900 through an exclusive partnership with White Flower Farm at whiteflowerfarm.com.

Peony Garden Gets New Look (2) This spring, our Peony Garden will get the final touches on a redesign to make the garden even more impactful and beautiful for our guests in the future. The transformation began last fall when the beds were redrawn to allow for more planting space and the top 24-inches of soil was replaced with a better-draining soil mix. The plant palette changed to include select peony cultivars in an inviting coraland-pink color palette that, once established, will typically bloom in late May and early June. In all, 177 peony plants representing 7 cultivars will flourish, increasing the population of peonies in the new garden by more than 40%. Hostas, lilies, and ornamental grasses, set to be planted

in spring, will provide summer and fall interest. Finally, the garden’s sundial is being restored and our masons are busily refurbishing its stone base in time for its return to the garden in spring. Like all new gardens, the Peony Garden will need time to mature before it blooms to its fullest potential. Guests will be able to enjoy the garden again when it reopens mid-May.

Expanded Geophyte Display This Spring (3) Last fall, our Outdoor Display Team planted approximately 500,000 geophytes throughout our Gardens. Minor bulbs are traditionally nature’s first sign of the spring season, creating carpets and tapestries of blues, purples, whites, and yellows. Tommasini’s crocus, winter-aconite, glory-of-the-snow, and daffodils burst through cold soil in Oak and Conifer Knoll, the Hillside Garden, and areas surrounding the Peirce-du Pont House.

Spotlight: Research Trials in the Gardens Did you know that in addition to the creation of beautiful displays, inspiring performing arts, and a myriad of educational programming, our staff conducts innovative research every day? In fact, each year our research team trials 300 to 400 plant taxa to support plant breeding, regional trials, global plant exploration, and the creation of our world-class displays. In preparation for the return of our Main Fountain Garden, our research team has conducted trials on ferns and mosses to grow in the new Grotto– the secluded center of the Garden. The Grotto presents a challenge because the plants will be subject to seasonal temperature fluctuations and minimal sunlight. Since July of 2015, our researchers have been testing ten fern species in environments mimicking that of The Grotto to learn more about how each species fares. Our horticulture staff will continue to closely monitor the plantings once The Grotto opens to ensure these tested ferns perform as expected.

Our new GardenShop is open and ready for shoppers! In addition to a fresh look and expanded floor plan, we’re excited to welcome more signature items from local and regional artisans. Browse textiles made by Bonnie Kaye Whitfield, pottery by Frank Stofan, home fragrance by Zoet Bathlatier, and enjoy an expanded plant selection featuring handmade terrariums and terrarium kits. Members can take advantage of 20% discounts at the GardenShop during our upcoming Member Appreciation Days on April 17, April 24, and May 1. The GardenShop opens daily from 9 am until the Gardens close.
