Capture our Gardens as you experiment with key elements of photography. Use your lens to document the magnificence of Longwood and collect one-of-akind images to build your personal portfolio. Personal cameras or Longwood‘s digital cameras may be used. Portfolios and flash drives will be provided. Suited for all skill levels.
July 16–20 Longwood‘s Garden Adventure Discover historical facts as you travel behind the scenes to create your own treasure map and solve puzzles and mysteries. Even the youngest detective will enjoy exploring Peirce‘s Woods, the Main Fountain Garden, and the Conservatory tunnels to uncover bits of Longwood‘s past. Paint It! Experiment with various methods of capturing nature's beauty. Create one-of-a-kind pieces with various paint mediums. Develop your talent for painting summer blooms, swaying trees, insects, and flowing landscapes. Supplies will be provided.
July 23–27 Birds, Butterflies, and Bees Discover the birds, butterflies, bees, and other wildlife that inhabit our Gardens day and night. Learn the secrets of attracting wildlife into your own environment as you explore the Meadow Garden and other areas on Longwood‘s vast property. Blend It! Let nature inspire your artistic talent as you compose original artwork using your own drawing technique. Learn to blend different media, colors, and textures and bring home a portfolio of masterpieces. Supplies will be provided.

New Behind the Scenes Tour: Under the Fountains Tours begin May 8 Most Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays 1:15 pm and 3:15 pm Tickets on sale April 23 $20 Non-Members/$18 Members (2) Experience the Main Fountain Garden from the inside out and explore the inner workings of the garden underground to see how this spectacular garden and its more than 1,700 fountain jets and streams dazzle and delight. Start your tour with private seating for a dynamic Main Fountain Garden daytime show, and then learn more about this oneof-a-kind space on a guided 60-minute behind-the-scenes tour traveling from above ground to the vast tunnel system hidden below. You’ll learn that beauty runs deep in this immersive, entertaining experience. Please note: This tour requires the ability to climb several flights of stairs and is not accessible by wheelchairs or other mobility devices. This ticket does not include admission to the Gardens.

Celebrate Family During Mother‘s Day Weekend Join us for Mother‘s Day Weekend Thursday, May 10 through Sunday, May 13. Gather the family for a spectacular evening fountain show Thursday through Saturday evening when the Gardens are open until 10 pm, or enjoy a flowerfilled Sunday stroll when the Gardens are open until 6 pm. The Café, 1906, and Beer Garden will be open and serving fresh seasonal fare. No reservations are necessary at The Café and Beer Garden, but 1906 reservations are limited, so make yours in advance at longwoodgardens.org/dine. Please note: Free timed Member reservations are required if arriving after 3 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. No Timed Member reservations are required on Sunday.

Past Meets Present: Our Historic Peirce‘s Trees Collection Our story began with Mr. du Pont’s act of tree preservation in 1906. Today, we continue to steward the trees throughout our Gardens, mapping them, tracking their condition and care, and ensuring we have replacement trees ready if needed, including exact genetic matches for our historic and notable trees. In 2017, our most historic trees were recognized with accreditation by the Plant Collections Network of the American Public Gardens Association. The Peirce’s Trees Collection includes 296 trees that represent not only the oldest in the Gardens, but also a direct link to the history and legacy of the Peirce family, Pierre S. du Pont, and the Philadelphia region. Within the 296 trees, 50 taxa are represented, and you can identify the original trees by their brass tags with the 1800s prefix, signaling that they have been on the property prior to 1880. We are continuing to survey our woodlands, many of which have not been disturbed since the late 1800s, for additional trees to include in the collection, which we expect may ultimately include more than 400 trees. Many of the trees are found in the woodland perimeter areas of the Gardens, but as you walk the landscape this spring, make sure to visit the national champion Magnolia acuminata var. subcordata ‘Peirce’s Park‘ (yellow cucumber magnolia) adjacent to the Peirce-du Pont House, or its neighboring Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree), Betula lenta (cherry birch), and Tsuga canadensis (Canada hemlock) trees along the southern path in Peirce’s Allée, all of which are standouts in the Peirce’s Trees Collection.
Join engraver and artist Andrew Raftery as he details his Autobiography of a Garden, an installation of 12 earthenware plates transfer-printed with engraving that depict the gardening tasks he undertook each month of the year in his mother’s garden. As part of The Garden Conservancy 2018 Speaker Series, Raftery will share insights into the relationship between nature’s inherent rhythms, the garden as inspiration, and the eight-year creation process of this unique installation. The lecture includes a wine and dessert reception. An award-winning printmaker specializing in scenes of contemporary American life, Raftery is a professor of printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the US and his work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and many others.
The Beauty of Spring, Captured Enjoy a juried exhibit of stunning images from the Delaware Photographic Society, one of America’s oldest and most respected photographic associations. Delaware Photographic Society members have captured stunning images of our spring flowering plants and trees. Stop by the Visitor Center to view the beauty of spring through the eye of the lens and the art of the photographer. The exhibit is on view now–April 29.
2018 Scout Programs Registration Open Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups are invited to engage in a Longwood-led program and earn a Longwood Gardens Fun Patch. All fun patches are unofficial and designed to be worn on the back of any sash or vest. Scout groups participate in various activities throughout the Gardens to meet partial requirements for specific badges. Wolves: Grow Something Adventure Travel behind the scenes to learn about the varieties of plants growing in our indoor production greenhouses and the automated growing environments that allow us to produce plants. Scouts experiment with seeds and take home a mini greenhouse to grow plants at home.
Juniors: Flower Legacy Naturalist Badge Immerse yourself in the beauty of Longwood’s diverse garden areas and learn about the unique flowering plants growing year-round under our four-acre Conservatory. Experiment with seeds, discover the working parts of the flower, and create a dried flower keepsake.
Brownies: Bugs Legacy Naturalist Badge Learn about insect body parts, life cycles, and habitat. Scouts make their own bee puzzle, hunt for pests, and learn about our integrated pest management system.
Cadettes: Trees Legacy Naturalist Badge Stroll through the shade of deciduous and coniferous trees and learn about the history of Longwood. Discover amazing facts about our champion trees and hundred-year-old bonsai. Learn how to tell the age of a tree, practice identifying trees, and bring home a tree cookie.
Bears: Furs, Feathers, and Ferns Adventure Explore our historic indoor and outdoor Gardens to discover the world of plants and insects. Scouts use magnifying glasses to identify fern spores and visit our soil shed to observe Longwood’s composting operations.
Webelos: Into the Woods Elective Adventure Journey through the Gardens to discover the role of trees and plants in our ecosystem. Learn about our historic trees, find what it takes for a tree to become a champion, and how to decipher a tree's life story.

Member Reservations Now Available The revitalized Main Fountain Garden awakens for its second spectacular season and we will be celebrating all summer long. Join us for daily performances when the fountains dance to stirring music and water jets shoot up to 175 feet high. Don‘t miss our Illuminated Fountain Performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, as well as our Fireworks & Fountains Shows series. Free Timed Member reservations required if arriving after 3 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through October 27.

For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following: – Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a firstcome basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted. – Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather. Parking Longwood offers free parking for our guests.
