Highlights from Our Gardens Nearly Complete: Our New Nursery Production Greenhouse We are putting the final touches on our new nursery production greenhouse, which will allow us to enjoy unprecedented flexibility to accommodate a variety of plant materials, growing methods, and environments … all in one facility. Located in the same location as our existing nursery, adjacent to Route 1, the new nursery production greenhouse greatly increases our level of environmental control, automation, and overall sustainability, as well as enables us to grow crops that we have not been able to grow before—in addition to the 1,300 types of plants we currently grow. After careful assessment of our existing production greenhouses, we designed and built this new production greenhouse to improve the quality and volume of our crop production, introduce sustainable technologies, and elevate the work environment for our staff. The new greenhouse will house 60 percent of our crop production, in comparison to our existing nursery, which grew 40 percent of our crops … but at

nearly 50 years old, lacked energy efficiency, appropriate growing spaces, and computerized environmental controls. Prior to the new greenhouse, our newest greenhouse facility on the property was 20 years old. The new facility consists of a 15,600-square-foot headhouse and a 65,348-square-foot greenhouse. The headhouse includes staff offices, potting/transplanting areas complete with a mechanical gantry system and conveyors for moving potting media, and receiving and delivery spaces with a drive-through lane allowing indoor plant loading in winter. Built of tempered glass, which allows for the highest level of light transmission, the greenhouse portion is unique in that it’s neither a commercial greenhouse nor a research greenhouse … but rather a bit of both. The vast majority of the new facility is dedicated to custom-growing plants for our seasonal displays, with 17 separate growing zones to best accommodate this diverse palette of plants from specialty cascade chrysanthemums to cool orchids to summer annuals and many more. In fact, our new

facility will enable us to grow cascade chrysanthemums indoors for the first time, allowing us to protect them from wet outdoor weather that often leads to fungal disease.

highest light levels possible, which is extremely helpful for acclimating plants to outdoor conditions before their transfer to garden spaces.

The new greenhouse encompasses two unique structural designs differing mainly by their type of roof. One half of the greenhouse is based on a “venlo” design, developed in the world’s leading greenhouse country, the Netherlands. This design employs a roof with individual vents for ventilation and temperature during fall through spring. The vents are kept mostly closed in summer when temperatures are lowered via fans and evaporative cooling technology.

Separate growing zones are distributed within these two roof types. Each zone features a curtain system to help with heat savings, as well as a shade curtain to help with cooling. Sixty percent of the zones also have grow lights for times of the year when light is limited, and blackout curtains to reduce daylength in order to trigger flower formation. The new facility also features a conveyor with a built-in watering system for hanging baskets.

The other half of the greenhouse employs a more recent design called “open-roof” where the entire roof can be opened like a giant accordion to provide passive cooling in summer, lower energy costs, and allow the

Following completion of the facility, we will transport existing crops to their new homes in the coming months … and embark on the exciting venture of bringing new, neverbefore-seen plants to Longwood.

“Our new greenhouse allows us to provide a greater diversity of plants, grown more precisely with less resource input, to raise our display quality to an even higher level.” —Jim Harbage, Director, Floriculture and Conservatories

Experience the Tulip Display of the Year

Coming Up Roses Thanks to our talented horticulture staff and their unmatched ability to bring new ideas and inspiration to life, we’ve begun the process of evolving our Rose Garden to a new planting design. The new design celebrates the garden’s early 20th century tradition and showcases a modern design approach to rose gardens… and we welcome you to follow our process over the next year. To create an extended season of horticultural beauty and interest in the Rose Garden, work is underway to update this historic garden while paying homage to its roots. The new Rose Garden will feature a more diverse selection of plants, including a variety of roses as well as perennials and other woody plants, planted in both formal and informal designs. One of the last gardens added during the lifetime of our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, the new design will be mindful of the Rose Garden’s special legacy and will maintain the original 1930s architecture, as well as continue to showcase the beauty of roses, including du Pont’s beloved climbing rose, ‘Direktor Benschop’ City of York, as well as new roses selected for their flower color, form, fragrance, and more. In preparation for the installation of the new design, we have already removed some plant material and completed soil renovations. We will begin planting the new design during this spring season. Once complete, the Rose Garden will showcase a beautiful color palette of dark purple to light tangerine to delicate blush to fresh green. Follow along with us as our new Rose Garden takes shape.

We’re delighted that our Spring Blooms display was named the 2019 Tulip Display of the Year by the World Tulip Society. A nonprofit organization made up of representatives of major tulip festivals and industries around the globe, the World Tulip Society is committed to promoting the tulip as a symbol of world friendship, peace, and spring. Longwood’s recognition as the Tulip Display of the Year is built upon decades of our celebration of tulips. Since the late 1950s, we have showcased thousands of tulips along our historic 600-foot-long Flower Garden Walk each spring. We continue to refine and evolve our award-winning spring display to include not only thousands of our popular tulips, but also different flowering bulbs to create a diverse, colorful, and memorable spring display. This year, our spring display in the Idea Garden is inspired by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher and the repetition of shape and form found in his work. The Idea Garden features a series of teardrop-shaped plantings of mixed bulbs and a succession of tulips arranged by color from the flamed lemon yellow Tulipa ‘Sweetheart’ to the soft pink Tulipa ‘Candy Prince’ to the purple-black Tulipa ‘Paul Scherer’. Complementing the elegant composition of the teardrop plantings is a mix of textural Triticum aestivum (winter wheat), gorgeous Hyacinthoides hispanica ‘Excelsior’ (Spanish bluebell), and delicate Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’ (summer snowflake). Experience the beauty of the tulip, and all it represents, this spring.
