Highlights From Our Gardens The Tradition Continues This Christmas we celebrate all of the traditions that make A Longwood Christmas so special … and our expert staff that makes it possible. From our traditional poinsettia standards to our living wreaths to our floral trees, our horticultural excellence leads the way. Outside, hundreds of thousands of outdoor lights set a festive mood, while our light shows set to holiday music, both near the Large Lake along a Pierce’s Woods backdrop and in the Main Fountain Garden, warm the heart. As you step foot in our East Conservatory, you’ll be greeted with a palette of wintery white, cool blue, and silver, evoking the feeling of refreshing, brisk air … but experienced in the comfort of our Conservatory. Draped in hues of blue, white, and silver, our towering 24-foot East Tree furthers the East Conservatory’s invigorating feel. Outdoor Landscape Manager Roger Davis, who leads the East Tree design and installation, was inspired by “an appreciation for our loved ones and community” and

conveying a “refreshing winter feeling while inside. The chill in the air and the joy of the season make this my favorite time of year,” shares Roger. The jovial sounds of fountains beckon you to the Fern Floor, where a delightful display of intertwining poinsettia ribbons flowing among fountains and surrounding red- and gold-decorated trees evokes a feeling of warmth and wonder. Led by Horticulture Specialty Grower Kevin Bielicki, the display “hearkens back to some of our past traditional floral displays but reconfigured in a new, contemporary way.” For Kevin, the design brings him back to his childhood when “it was always a tradition to completely decorate our house inside and out, building great memories along the way. Designing an experience to help guests generate memories for years to come is very satisfying,” he shares. Speaking of warmth and wonder … our Music Room is a delight just waiting to be unwrapped. This iconic A Longwood Christmas space is decked out in a theme reminiscent

of a nostalgic Christmas morning, with overflowing stockings hanging from the mantel and an 18-foot-tall Fraser fir rotating in the center doorway, with beautifully decorated presents waiting underneath. Senior Horticulturist April Bevans, who has led the design of the Music Room for nearly a decade now, shares that “the room is dressed for a traditional Christmas and this year is just the right time for that feel. I always go into designing the Music Room with a story in my head, and this year I envisioned the most beautiful sitting room that calls us all back to the visions of the holidays as a child.” Other delights waiting to be discovered throughout our Conservatory include an ombre-swathed tree amid a vibrant meadow in our Mediterranean Garden and spectacular living trees of tropical foliage in our Palm House, Tillandsia in our Cascade Garden, and poinsettia and Artemisia in our Rose House. Outside, more beautiful horticulture in the spirit of traditional A Longwood Christmas beauty awaits. Our 25-foot

Gardener’s Tree is enveloped with ornaments, sugar cones, gourds, and a handmade grapevine garland, as well as topped with gilded curly willow and Paulownia pods. As in many years past, our Wildlife Tree nourishes our feathered and furry friend with its handcrafted edible ornaments, and our Peirce-du Pont House Conservatory and Heritage Exhibit Rooms feature multicolored décor as bright and cheerful as the season itself. Senior Horticulturist Lauren Hill, part of the team who decorates the Peirce-du Pont House for the season, loves that the house calls for attention to “tiny details,” as guests can view everything up close in this space. Lauren always feels inspired by her own childhood when decorating the house, sharing “When I was little I would wake up early in the morning when it was still dark to go and plug in the Christmas trees. My mother had a tree for each of us four kids. I would lay on the floor under the lights and at Longwood I want to create that same magical escape for our guests this year, to feel the brightness of the holidays."

Winter Wonder On View January 23–March 21, 2021

This winter, it’s all about outdoor spacious and indoor oasis. Outside, envelop yourself in a feeling of peace and tranquility with a walk amongst the dramatic silhouettes of trees that stretch far into the sky, as soothing, textural grasses and seed heads guide you along the way. Take time to examine the fine details of the winter garden, set against the fresh, crisp air of winter. Inside, step into a sanctuary of warmth. Look up to an overhead garden of hanging baskets adorned with such vibrant beauties as jasmine, capeprimrose, and lipstick-plant. Find yourself in a paradise of flowers and foliage, bursting with color … all in a beautiful indoor winter wonderland with a tropical twist. Warm up to winter.
