From our Italian Water Garden illuminated with a 20-foot tree form, to a golden hickory tree lit with its roots aglow near our Meadow Boardwalk, to the colorful fountains of our Open Air Theatre, there is holiday magic everywhere!

Highlights from Our Gardens Waterlily & Main Fountain Garden Magic in the Music Room (1) Our Waterlily Display may be closed for the season, but during A Longwood Christmas guests can experience elements of this favorite summer display and the origins of the Main Fountain Garden in our Music Room. The room will be set up as though it is Pierre S. du Pont’s study as he is in the planning stages of building the Main Fountain Garden. Two 15-foot trees will be decorated with dried waterlilies and other preserved floral elements. The process of drying our waterlilies began in August when our Waterlily Curator began cutting flowers out of the flourishing display. Flowers that had bloomed in the last 24 hours were the best candidates for the drying process because they are more narrow and less likely to break than the older flowers. Blue, yellow, and white flowers that recently bloomed were chosen to match the colors of our A Longwood Christmas theme. From the pools, the flowers were shaken upside-down to get the sweet nectar and other moisture out. A wire is put through the bud and the stem is cut off so that just the flower with a wire for handling remains. Next, the flowers are put in plastic containers and covered in ‘dustless silica gel’, a sand-like material that dries out the flowers. The flowers are left in the container for two weeks in a cool. dark spot. When the flowers are removed after two weeks, they are dried, brittle, and feel paper-thin. Smaller, delicate waterlilies in little globes will adorn the Music Room trees, and the larger flowers will be featured on the mantelpiece in the Music Room.
The Art of Growing Poinsettias (2) Did you know that our gardeners and growers trial every cultivar of poinsettia before they appear in the Conservatory for A Longwood Christmas? This year 1,600 pots, baskets and standards of red, white, pink, orange, and marble poinsettias will grace the conservatories of Longwood to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. These blooms are possible due to the dedication of our team of three horticulturists and their effort to produce these spectacular plants. Poinsettias are short-day plants that require long nights and short days to initiate flowering. They require constant attention regarding fertility, soil moisture, temperature, and light. Successful growth requires intensive crop care procedures including timely potting, pinching, shoot removal, and disease and insect control. As a result of labor intensive crop care poinsettias reward us with the vibrant and colorful flowers that have come to be our traditional floral symbol of the holiday season. Most of our poinsettias are started from cuttings in June through early August and are ready for display in the Conservatory by Thanksgiving … just in time for A Longwood Christmas. Some of the most notable poinsettias that will be featured this year are Santa Claus Red (trialed in 2004), Orange Spice (trialed in 2014), and Red Glitter (trialed in 2011). Poinsettia trials are continuing behind-the-scenes in our Production Greenhouse and Estate House north passage. Each year we trial 10–12 new cultivars, and are trialing the following: Christmas Joy Pink, Christmas Joy White, Christmas Party, Infinity Marble, Glace, Christmas Glamour, Prima Donna, Saturnus White, Titan Pink, Titan Red, and Titan White. Be sure to come next year, and just maybe some of these poinsettias will be the crown jewel of a future A Longwood Christmas.

Holiday Magic at the Garden Railway The Christmas lights are up at our G-scale model train display. Be sure to take your little ones to see the four locomotives rumble through our beautifully landscaped display located near the Terrace Restaurant. The Garden Railway is outdoors and runs during regular Gardens hours, weather permitting, through January 10, 2016.
Outdoor Christmas Light Display Expands
Professional Gardener Class of 2015
(3) This holiday season we’re expanding our outdoor walking paths and light display in the east part of our Gardens. You will enjoy more lit trees, an illuminated Italian Water Garden, our Meadow Boardwalk, and a new display near our Hourglass Lake Pavilion. One tree not to be missed in the Hourglass Lake Pavilion is our Meadow Garden-inspired tree decorated by our Natural Lands Caretaker. This 12-foot-tall concolor fir will be adorned with ornaments using materials found in the Meadow Garden and throughout our natural lands as well as a silver grapevine garland, water droplet-shaped ornaments filled with milkweed down, and handmade dragonfly decorations. The dragonflies are made with redbud (the wings) and black-eyed susan (the eyes) seed pods attached to a “body” of red or yellow twig dogwood. When the sun sets at the Hourglass Lake Pavilion, you will be able to see the largest tree of A Longwood Christmas aglow in our Meadow Garden … a 90-foot hickory tree twinkling with red lights in the distance. Another new display near the Meadow Boardwalk will present a picture-perfect moment with a glistening gold hickory tree that will not only have its trunk and branches illuminated, but will also have the outline of its roots lit, too. Please note: Our Meadow Boardwalk is available weather permitting.
(4) This December, Longwood Gardens is pleased to celebrate the graduation of eight Professional Gardener program students. This two-year, tuition-free program trains students for professional careers in public horticulture through rotations in the classroom and in our Gardens. The class of 2015 has been busy with class and work rotations, but they also managed to develop a Longwood student blog, lead the student beehives to a successful honey harvest, and one student completed the first student exchange program for ten days at The Alnwick Garden in England. Many exciting opportunities are lined up for their futures. One student has accepted a position in Longwood’s nursery, while another has two more internships in Mexico and England before he begins his career at Untermeyer Gardens in Yonkers, New York. “We are proud of all this class has accomplished, and are looking forward to seeing them flourish in their future careers,” says Brian Trader, Domestic and International Studies Coordinator & Interim Director of The Longwood Graduate Program.

Our World’s Fair Fountain (5) We will have a special fountain on display in our Conservatory this year during A Longwood Christmas. The World’s Fair Fountainhead was used at the 1939 World’s Fair, and was given as a gift to the Gardens by William H. Frederick, a longtime member of the Longwood Gardens Board of Trustees. This fountain was first displayed at Longwood on our Fern Floor during A Longwood Christmas in 1986. This fountainhead returns to dazzle as it creates a fabulous basket of water in our East Conservatory.

Rhonda Vincent & The Rage Saturday, January 30 8 pm Named “The Queen of Bluegrass,” Rhonda Vincent & The Rage are the perfect combination of bluegrass and country. She is a six-time Grammy Nominee and her band has won more than 100 awards for the Bluegrass genre. Her most recent album, Only Me, shows that she is a true artist not confined by strict musical genres or corralled by boundaries set in place by corporate music honchos. James O’Donnell Friday, February 19 8 pm James O’Donnell is Organist and Master of the Choristers of Westminster Abbey in London. He is in charge of directing and overseeing the music for all services and events at Westminster Abbey, including the music for the special Royal occasions held there. Internationally recognized as a conductor and organ recitalist, he has given concerts all over the world and appeared as an organ soloist in the BBC Proms and at many other festivals. Winter at Longwood Gardens is far from snowy and cold. Our Conservatory transforms into a tropical oasis featuring our largest and most diverse display of orchids ever. Our spectacular orchid curtain returns, a 12-foot orchid arch spans our Oval Basin, and 200 Vanda Orchids hang above you as you explore our Silver Garden. Experience orchids at every turn during Orchid Extravaganza. OrKID Days … A Family Affair! January 18, February 15, March 19 11 am–2 pm OrKID Days are filled with fun and wonder for our youngest guests. Children can explore orchids firsthand at discovery stations, enjoy interactive story reading, and partake in a family seek-and-find in our orchid-filled Conservatory.

For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following: – Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a firstcome basis for a fee.
