Highlights from Our Gardens Presenting Our Largest Tree Display Ever (1) One of our must-see, show stopping, displays of this year’s A Longwood Christmas is the “Living Tree.” Standing more than 30 feet tall and spanning 20 feet wide in the flooded Fern Floor, this constructed tree form is the largest in the history of our display. Over the course of brainstorming, building, planting, decorating, and completing, more than 50 staff members contributed hundreds of hours to this holiday masterpiece. The infrastructure highlights many of our departments, involving collaboration between our metal shop, carpenters, horticulturists, and designers. The tree itself is made with a combination of wood and metal, giving 1,300 potted plants a place to sit on the massive structure. The tree features a mix of red poinsettias, white scarlet-plumes, Canary Island ivy, and white moth orchids. An elegant tree skirt of living ferns harkens to the design tradition of displaying ferns in the Exhibition Hall. Due to the large size of the design, a complex irrigation system of 4,000 feet of tubing funnels up the “trunk”, providing an individual water spout for each plant. The irrigation system includes multiple lines so each type of plant can be watered according to its needs, and saves staff from hand-watering from 30 feet above the marble Fern Floor. Our horticulturists designed the planting scheme meticulously to reflect each plant’s need for water, sunlight, and temperature. The tree is also adorned with hand-painted silver winged burning-bush branches, crystal garland, and ornaments.

An Orchestra of Christmas Joy (2) Our A Longwood Christmas theme, the sounds of the season, comes to life in our Music Room this year! Built in 1923 by Pierre and Alice du Pont, the room’s elaborate walnut and silk paneled walls, teak floor, grand fireplace, and extravagantly molded and painted plaster ceiling create the perfect place to deck the halls. At the center of the room, you will discover a Christmas tree inspired by music that rotates in a wooden music box. More than 60 violins, violas, flutes, clarinets, drums, trumpets, trombones, and French horns act as garland on the 19 foot tall Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) grown in north central Pennsylvania. Beautiful transparent glass ornaments, delicately laid ribbon resembling sheet music, and classic Christmas tunes radiate from a music box, creating an orchestra of holiday cheer for all. Fire Pit Fun is Back (3) We’re bringing back not just one, but three fire pits this holiday season– tripling the areas where our guests can warm up by the fire! The fire pits will be placed at the Hour Glass Lake Pavilion, Peirce-du Pont House Plaza, and Dogwood Plaza. Along with the return of last year’s spherical fire pit, our two new fire pits were created in a collaboration of our horticulture team, masons, and metal shop craftsmen. Inspired by our Meadow Garden, the new fire pit at the Hourglass Lake Pavilion features a circular 6-foot base that is adorned with handmade metal cattails that were individually welded onto the structure. The new fire pit at the Peirce-du Pont House Plaza is 4 feet by 8 feet, and was created by building a metal trough and covering it with stones. The fire pits will be available every night from 4:30–10 pm throughout A Longwood Christmas, weather permitting.

Children’s Christmas Trees One of our most cherished traditions since 1993, the Children’s Christmas Trees invites students and their families to be a part of A Longwood Christmas. Thirteen trees, on display in our Estate Fruit House, are designed and created by participating schools chosen from the tristate area. Each May, schools submit an application including pictures of the ornaments, garments, and toppers they hope to use for the tree display. This year, schools were asked to submit design ideas based on our color palette of red, green, and gold. Some of the designs we expect to see include a candy-themed tree, a nature-inspired tree, and a snowinspired tree. It is a magical experience for the students to see their handmade ornaments hanging from a Longwood tree for you to enjoy!

Holiday Magic at the Garden Railway Take your little ones to see our Garden Railway, featuring four locomotives rumbling over 450 feet of track in our beautifully landscaped display located near the Terrace Restaurant. The Garden Railway is outdoors and runs during regular Gardens hours, weather permitting, through January 8, 2017.

Experience Wintergarden at Dilworth Park this holiday season! Located at City Hall in Center City, Philadelphia, Wintergarden is a wonderland featuring inspiring horticulture displays, fire pits, ice skating, shopping, and more. One of Wintergarden’s must-visit features is the new America’s Garden Capital Maze—a holiday-inspired garden that celebrates the 32 public gardens in our region—including Longwood Gardens! Children and adults will delight in discovering picture-perfect moments amid the vibrant plantings, topiaries, twinkling lights, and décor that showcases all the public gardens, arboreta, and historic landscapes that are located within 30 miles of Philadelphia. Get inspired for spring during your visit, too, and take advantage of 12 weeks of free Garden Programs throughout January and February.
