Come Early! Arrive by 2 pm and you’ll miss the evening rush of traffic and still have time to explore all the Brandywine Valley has to offer after your visit to the Gardens. Our outdoor holiday lights come on at 3:30 pm and our fountain shows run continuously throughout the evening.

Print Your Tickets at Home. To avoid lines, we encourage you to print your tickets at home and show them upon entry. Or, go paperless and open your print-at-home tickets on your smartphone prior to entering the Visitor Center and we'll scan it at the door.

Bundle Up! A Longwood Christmas is both indoors and outdoors. Please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.

Shop and Dine. Our Café, 1906, concessions, and The GardenShop are all available for you. Make a reservation in our fine dining restaurant 1906 at opentable.com. Be sure to select the same date for which you purchased Timed Admission Tickets or made a Member Reservation.

Allow for Travel Time. Traffic may become heavy approaching Longwood Gardens between 3 and 7 pm.

Parking is Free. Remote parking is used if needed. Transportation from remote parking areas to the Gardens is provided. Handicap parking is available in the main lot of Longwood Gardens. Please display your handicap permit so our staff can appropriately direct you to the designated area.

Garden Fresh Highlights The Fruits of Our Past This year’s fresh and in season fruit theme for A Longwood Christmas is inspired by the historical significance fruit has played since 1907 when our founder Pierre S. du Pont first purchased and planted fruit trees at his estate. In 1912, Mr. du Pont recorded a list of the following fruits growing in the orchards: 18 apple varieties, apricots, plums, nectarines, and 14 peach varieties. The Conservatory was built between 1919 and 1921 to create a large entertainment space but also as a place to grow fruit out-of-season. The central area of our Conservatory, the Orangery, originally sheltered citrus. Six greenhouses dedicated to fruit production flanked the Orangery and could produce as many as 5,445 nectarines, 1,000 apricots, 655 peaches, and 1,139 figs a year. The Banana House was dedicated to growing fruit for the enjoyment of Mr. du Pont’s employees, friends, and family. Throughout the 1920s–40s, Mr. du Pont sent holiday gift baskets filled with fruit to family and friends, and in return, he received many thank you notes for his generosity. Guests can see some of these historic thank you notes on display outside the Music Room alongside modern-day fresh fruit baskets inspired by those from our past.

The Magic of A Longwood Christmas Changeover Perhaps one of the most impressive things about A Longwood Christmas is what happens the three days before the display even opens. That’s when the entire Conservatory is transformed into our holiday showplace. The “Changeover,” as it is called, is anticipated with enthusiasm and excitement by everyone in the Gardens—and has become a tradition. Beginning on Sunday night, November 24 at 6 pm 155 staff members work many hours to transform the outdoor Gardens and Conservatory from Chrysanthemum Festival to A Longwood Christmas. Within the first three hours of work, all of the mums

are removed from the Conservatory, and more than 50 trees and a portion of our 2,300 poinsettias are moved inside. Trees are pre-lit prior to moving them into the Conservatory, but all the decorating with dried, faux, glass, and fresh fruit ornaments are completed on-site. Every area of the Gardens isn’t considered “finished” until Display Designer Jim Sutton checks it off as “approved” on Wednesday, November 27. To keep our hardworking staff happy, coffee and donuts are served in the morning, and pizza dinners are provided at night. “The best part about A Longwood Christmas Changeover is seeing all of our staff work together seamlessly in an intense, short period of time to help each other in any way needed. I get the best feeling seeing our team members proud of their work and knowing the joy our trees and displays will bring to guests during the next 46 days,” Sutton says. Although Changeover is compressed into four days of work, the planning process of A Longwood Christmas starts more than 12 months in advance and takes an estimated 5,400 hours to create.

Explore More Lights Outdoors This holiday season we’ve expanded our outdoor light display in the east part of the Gardens. Stroll past floating green and white trees in our Large Lake. See more than 100 sparkling snowflakes twinkling in the night sky and be amazed by our first-ever display of 18 custom crafted 13 ft –16 ft tree forms twinkling with white lights behind our Small Lake.

What’s Your Guess? One of the freshest highlights of this year’s A Longwood Christmas is our floating apple display on the Fern Floor in our Exhibition Hall. Red Rome and green Granny Smith apples from a PA-based apple grower, Bear Mountain Orchard, float in an artistic pattern in four inches of water. To keep the apples in place, a lightweight structural form was made using plywood, Plexiglas, and metal at our in-house Carpentry Shop. After A Longwood Christmas season, the apples will be donated to Herr’s in Nottingham, PA for cattle feed. Just how many apples are floating on the fern floor? That is our question for you! Reservations made via opentable.com or by calling 610.388.1000. For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following: – Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a firstcome basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted. – Rentals are free for Members, but Member guests will be charged a fee. – Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
