HO LI DAY A Longwood Christmas November 28–January 12
A Longwood Christmas On view November 28–January 12 Fruit has had a place of importance in the Gardens since 1907 when our founder Pierre S. du Pont first planted fruit trees. We celebrate this history by decking our halls with the bounty of the season. Extravagant fruit-adorned trees stand in our Conservatory, red and green apples float in our Exhibition Hall, and a lavish holiday tea is set in our Music Room. Stroll the Gardens and enjoy our expanded outdoor experience—featuring a floating tree display, twinkling tree forms, a 12-foot fountain of lights in our Main Fountain Garden, and more. Savor the beauty of A Longwood Christmas— fresh and in season.

Garden Fresh Highlights The Fruits of Our Past This year’s fresh and in season fruit theme for A Longwood Christmas is inspired by the historical significance fruit has played since 1907 when our founder Pierre S. du Pont first purchased and planted fruit trees at his estate. In 1912, Mr. du Pont recorded a list of the following fruits growing in the orchards: 18 apple varieties, apricots, plums, nectarines, and 14 peach varieties. The Conservatory was built between 1919 and 1921 to create a large entertainment space but also as a place to grow fruit out-of-season. The central area of our Conservatory, the Orangery, originally sheltered citrus. Six greenhouses dedicated to fruit production flanked the Orangery and could produce as many as 5,445 nectarines, 1,000 apricots, 655 peaches, and 1,139 figs a year. The Banana House was dedicated to growing fruit for the enjoyment of Mr. du Pont’s employees, friends, and family. Throughout the 1920s–40s, Mr. du Pont sent holiday gift baskets filled with fruit to family and friends, and in return, he received many thank you notes for his generosity. Guests can see some of these historic thank you notes on display outside the Music Room alongside modern-day fresh fruit baskets inspired by those from our past.
The Magic of A Longwood Christmas Changeover Perhaps one of the most impressive things about A Longwood Christmas is what happens the three days before the display even opens. That’s when the entire Conservatory is transformed into our holiday showplace. The “Changeover,” as it is called, is anticipated with enthusiasm and excitement by everyone in the Gardens—and has become a tradition. Beginning on Sunday night, November 24 at 6 pm 155 staff members work many hours to transform the outdoor Gardens and Conservatory from Chrysanthemum Festival to A Longwood Christmas. Within the first three hours of work, all of the mums
are removed from the Conservatory, and more than 50 trees and a portion of our 2,300 poinsettias are moved inside. Trees are pre-lit prior to moving them into the Conservatory, but all the decorating with dried, faux, glass, and fresh fruit ornaments are completed on-site. Every area of the Gardens isn’t considered “finished” until Display Designer Jim Sutton checks it off as “approved” on Wednesday, November 27. To keep our hardworking staff happy, coffee and donuts are served in the morning, and pizza dinners are provided at night. “The best part about A Longwood Christmas Changeover is seeing all of our staff work together seamlessly in an intense, short period of time to help each other in any way needed. I get the best feeling seeing our team members proud of their work and knowing the joy our trees and displays will bring to guests during the next 46 days,” Sutton says. Although Changeover is compressed into four days of work, the planning process of A Longwood Christmas starts more than 12 months in advance and takes an estimated 5,400 hours to create.
Explore More Lights Outdoors This holiday season we’ve expanded our outdoor light display in the east part of the Gardens. Stroll past floating green and white trees in our Large Lake. See more than 100 sparkling snowflakes twinkling in the night sky and be amazed by our first-ever display of 18 custom crafted 13 ft –16 ft tree forms twinkling with white lights behind our Small Lake.
What’s Your Guess? One of the freshest highlights of this year’s A Longwood Christmas is our floating apple display on the Fern Floor in our Exhibition Hall. Red Rome and green Granny Smith apples from a PA-based apple grower, Bear Mountain Orchard, float in an artistic pattern in four inches of water. To keep the apples in place, a lightweight structural form was made using plywood, Plexiglas, and metal at our in-house Carpentry Shop. After A Longwood Christmas season, the apples will be donated to Herr’s in Nottingham, PA for cattle feed. Just how many apples are floating on the fern floor? That is our question for you! Be sure to “Like” us on Facebook at Facebook. com/LongwoodGardens and participate in our Facebook contest to guess how many apples are floating on the Fern Floor! The contest is open from Thursday, November 28 at 9 am through Tuesday, December 3 at midnight. The winner will receive a year-long Rose Arbor Membership and a gift certificate for “Tea for Two” in the Green Room at The Hotel du Pont. We will announce the winner on Wednesday, December 4 on our Facebook page.

Our Music Room Goes Green for a Holiday Tea
One tree you’ll be sure not to miss this holiday season is the 18-foot Douglasfir tree in our East Conservatory adorned with 175 larger-than-life, hand-blown glass works of art. Each red, green, and yellow glass pear on the tree may look like it’s an ornament, but these works, created by artisans from Cohn-Stone Studios in California are 10"–12" in height and weigh 2.5 lbs, making them too heavy to hang like a traditional ornament. Our Longwood Metal Shop made a custom frame that sits inside the tree to gently hold each pear in place. These exquisite pears will also look perfect as a table centerpiece or on display on a mantle or shelf in your home. We’re offering guests the opportunity to purchase the official hand blown glass pears used on this tree! Pre-order your hand-blown glass pears today, while supplies last, at longwoodgardens.org or call The GardenShop at 610.388.5475. Pears are $329.99 and Members save 10%. Please remember, because you’ll receive the pears featured in our A Longwood Christmas display, items are available for in-store pickup or will begin shipping on January 16, 2014. Supply is limited and color choice is first come, first-served.
This year, our Music Room display is inspired by the Green Room in The Hotel du Pont, which is celebrating its centennial year. Our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, was largely responsible for building the Hotel, located in Wilmington, DE. Today, the Green Room at the Hotel du Pont still serves daily afternoon tea and in honor of its 100-year milestone, a collection of loose leaf centennial teas featuring many of the du Pont landmarks in the Brandywine Valley—including Longwood Gardens—was created. The Longwood Centennial Tea makes a perfect stocking stuffer and is available for $21.99 at The GardenShop and longwoodgardens.org, Members save 10%. Inside our Music Room display throughout A Longwood Christmas seasonal splendor abounds,

Thursday, March 6, 8 pm Slick and nostalgic, yet unmistakably modern, Germany’s Max Raabe & Palast Orchester debut at Longwood Gardens. The ever-elegant, debonair Raabe and his 12-piece orchestra embody the halcyon days of 1920s and 30s Weimar Berlin in all its high style and musical glory. It’s all there— dance hall songs, couplets, Cuban rumbas, happy foxtrots, and stylish tangos, as Raabe in his perfect tux captures the essence of the cabaret singer, the bel canto hero, the falsetto of ragtime, and the timbre of early prewar jazz.
