I hope you all had a lovely Easter. My family and I took full advantage of the glorious weather over the school holidays and visited lots of local attractions and events including Thame Country Show, Wendover Woods and the Horses Home of Rest, but our favourite was riding the Steam Train from Chinnor Railway. We are so lucky to have this authentic attraction on our doorstep, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time once you hop aboard and it’s a great way to see our beautiful countryside. If you’ve not visited before I thoroughly recommend it. For those who prefer to take in the beauty of the Chilterns on foot, you’ll be pleased to know that the Chilterns Walking Festival returns from 21st May – 5th June with over 75 immersive and interactive activities and experiences planned. Check out our website to read more. Thame Town Awards returns to celebrate our local unsung heroes who go out of their way for others to make our community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live. If you know someone who lives, works, studies, or contributes to life in Thame and you feel they should be recognised for it, head to the Town Council’s website (www. thametowncouncil.gov.uk/community/town-awards/)by Thursday 26th May to nominate them. This years categories are: Company of the Year | Creative Arts Contribution | Service with a Smile | Sporting Contribution | Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer Group of the Year. THE SEASONS OF CHANGE Life restarts in Spring, but what if you feel lost..?

Andy Roscoe, Acupuncturist and Director at Thame Therapy Clinic, offers his thoughts on life after Covid and the changes accompanying the onset of Spring. Spring is here and change in the natural world gives us new opportunities. For a lot of us it is about picking up the pieces of life and trying to regain something that resembles normality before the pandemic. This is easier said than done. Covid cases are rising again and we can’t be sure if a runny nose is a cold or covid or just a bit of hayfever?! But this was probably always the case before covid… normality also meant some uncertainty. So how do we move forward with uncertainty around? Mostly we need to have some flexibility in navigating the way forward. We need to have at least one back-up plan. None of this is easy of course as the feelings of optimism in the air can soon be replaced by a rush of energy that creates a kind of giddy mayhem. Tired minds and bodies are flooded with a relentless imperative to get going but this can also be coupled with frustration, confusion or anxiety due to overwhelmed and not really knowing where we are or what direction we are going. It needn’t be like this. At Thame Therapy Clinic we have experienced practitioners who can help you find a way to move forward. It might be a counsellor, or psychotherapist or acupuncturist, or homeopath or body worker.

Give the clinic a call on 01844 215555 and speak to Andy or Kieren who will be able to advice on the best Therapist for you.

Making a Will - some important decisions, by Mike Bradley of Integrity Wills

A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will,

creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.

THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf.

APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.

PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant.

Midnight Walk returns for one final night... Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s annual Midnight Walk returns to Aylesbury for the final time after a two year hiatus on Saturday 16th July. Since it began in 2010, the Midnight Walk has seen hundreds of men and women come together and take to the streets of Aylesbury, walking over 50,000 miles and raising over £650,000 for the charity over the years. The charity is hoping its local community will support their Farewell Midnight Walk, with walkers joining them to remember loved ones and support their local hospice as they walk the final miles for one last time. Walkers can choose from 5 mile or 10 mile circular routes – both starting from Aylesbury College at midnight on Saturday 16th July, with refreshments at pit stops along the way. Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

May’s plant in focus is Wonderful Wisteria... Abundant dripping blooms of purple racemes drape the porches and walls of our homes throughout this month. They are a joy to behold, and with a scent to match; an aspirational plant to bring into your garden. They are however a plant that can cause a little consternation: Why won’t they flower? What makes them bloom? How do I train them where I want them? I know wisterias. Would you believe, I am Miss RHS Wisteria on YouTube! 279k views! Go check it out if you want to see me 10 years younger and with a Surrey accent! You will of course get the how-to on why and when to prune your wisteria. What do you need to consider if you want a wisteria in your life? Wisteria sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese wisteria, is a species of the pea family, native to China, in the provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Yunnan it can grow 20–30m, so planting position is key. Coming from those regions wisteria is hardy at low temperatures but loves a sunny spot. It needs the sun for ripening those buds and without this, it is very reluctant to flower. So a west or south-facing wall is very important for best blooms. Then it is all about the pruning. Wisteria as we have noted is a vigorous plant and so it needs pruning back to 5 buds from the framework to keep it in check. This prune is done in late summer (July /August) as the sap returns to the roots. When you prune you expose the flower-bearing tips to the sun and keep the plant’s growth close to the framework on the wall or pergola (or wherever you want it). You will then need to prune again in January cutting back to 2 buds. This reduces the leaf break in the spring and concentrates the plant’s energy in the flower buds giving you bigger blooms and an unfettered view of them. For the cultivar with the longest blooms go for Wisteria floribunda macrobotrys. I also love white Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Shiro Kapitan’. A note of caution on buying cheap and small specimens can take 7 years before they are mature enough to bloom so could be slow to perform. Those seeds like the laburnum are poisonous so be watchful with Dogs and children when the seeds drop.

With love, Lucie

Building Blocks of Britain: Bath Stone vs Portland Stone By Coulon Stone explains In Britain, one of our most treasured natural resources is a collection of limestones renowned for their architectural benefits. Two of the most popular are quarried in England’s Western Peninsula, an area which in the Jurassic Period was covered in water. Portland Stone and Bath Stone have both been used extensively building some of Britain’s most notable structures, and they continue to be used in homes today, particularly for fireplaces, staircases and flooring. Portland Stone quarried in

the Isle of Portland, Dorset, is am Oolitic Limestone formed over the last 150 million years from the slow compacting of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite) and organic sea floor matter, like shell fragments. Portland Stone is quarried in three distinct layers, and whilst all three are a light, off-white in colour, they vary slightly depending on the layer. The base bed is the oldest layer, and most pure in colour and grain, Whitbed is more textured to the touch and Roach, the youngest layer, has the most visible variation in colour and grains, and it’s in this layer the most amount of marine life can be seen. Portland Stone has been used to build important buildings since the Roman’s, and it’s particularly prominent in London, where you don’t have to walk far to see a Portland Stone Building. After the Great Fire of 1666 it was used to build some of the capital’s most infamous landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. Today it is a popular choice for fireplace surrounds and staircases due to its combination of calm, neutral hues, and durability.

Bath Stone also an Oolitic Limestone,

is quarried in Corsham, England. It’s warmer in colour than Portland Stone and when used in architecture gives buildings a distinctive honey appearance. Bath Stone is a ‘freestone’ which means it can be sawn in any direction, there are no distinct layers compromising it’s strength. This makes it ideal for building projects. Bath Stone’s most infamous landmarks make up the city of Bath’s World Heritage Site status and include The Royal Crescent and Bath Abbey. Bath Stone is also a popular choice for fireplaces and staircases today. It’s durable due to it’s ‘freestone’ structure, and has a classic, heritage feel to how it looks.
