Can you find all the flock?

A new sheep-themed art trail launched Penistone is embracing a charming new art trail featuring whimsical sheep sculptures to captivate locals and visitors alike. Crafted by artist Michael Disley, these 11 woolly residents, fashioned from natural granite, can be found across town engaging in various activities, from cycling and roller-skating to football. The project pays homage to Penistone's rich heritage, rooted in centuriesold sheep sales, with the white-faced woodland breed known as Penistone sheep. Among the flock highlights: A sheep enjoying popcorn outside Penistone Paramount Cinema A cycling sheep at Penistone Showground on the TransPennine Trail A football-clad sheep at Penistone Church Football Club A well-traveled sheep with a suitcase near Penistone Railway Station

Richard Wheeler: Man pleads guilty to fatal Sheffield city centre attack

Five "grazing" sheep benches, enhancing public spaces. Fans have already embraced the footballing sheep, named Penny, while the rest await monikers chosen in collaboration with local schoolchildren. Michael Disley, a seasoned stone sculptor, spearheaded this initiative, conducting granite-carving workshops titled School of Rock in local schools. This art trail is a delightful facet of our Principal Towns programme, aligning with commitment to invest in community vitality. To join the fun, share your sheep sightings on social media with #PenistoneSheep. As Cllr Janine Moyes expressed, “let's make Penistone a hub of joy and discovery.”

A man has admitted killing another man who died 10 days after being attacked outside a Sheffield city centre pub. Richard Wheeler, 56, died in hospital from injuries sustained in the assault, which took place near The Bessemer pub, in Leopold Street, on 15 July. On Wednesday Liam Jones, (pictured) 20, pleaded guilty at the city's crown court to a charge of manslaughter and five other offences. Jones, of Bowshaw Avenue, Sheffield is due to be sentenced on 8 December.

Memorable Remembrance Parade and Clock Tower Rededication Ceremony Commemorate a Century of Sacrifice

GENERATIONAL TOGERTHENESS: 96-year-old Royal Navy veteran Jack Clayton, who stood proudly alongside his 8-year-old great-granddaughter, cub scout Bella. 100 Years of historic Clock Tower: Photo by Pete Revitt Football Match Remembrance: Stocksbridge Park Steels Photo by Pete Revitt.

In a poignant tribute to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, this year's Remembrance Parade saw a remarkable turnout that reflected the community's unwavering commitment to honouring the fallen. The solemn Remembrance Service took on added significance as it incorporated a Re-dedication Ceremony for the historic Clock Tower, which stands as a silent sentinel marking 100 years since its construction and dedication to honour those who gave their lives in the First World War. Originally erected as a memorial for the fallen of the Great War, the Clock Tower later became a symbol of remembrance for the Second World War as well, with the names of those lost in WWII added to its hallowed walls. The ceremony not only paid tribute to the brave soldiers of the past but also served as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of their sacrifice on the community. Among the attendees was 96-year-old Royal Navy veteran Jack Clayton, who stood proudly alongside his 8-year-old greatgranddaughter, cub scout Bella. Their intergenerational presence encapsulated the spirit

of remembrance, as they joined together on this solemn Remembrance Day in 2023. Mr. Clayton, a living link to the past, shared his experiences and wisdom with the younger generation, fostering a sense of continuity in the collective memory of the sacrifices made for freedom. The atmosphere was filled with a mix of sombre reflection and gratitude as the community came together to pay respects to the heroes who have shaped the course of history. The Clock Tower, standing tall as a testament to the resilience and sacrifice of those who served, now holds renewed significance as it enters its second century as a symbol of remembrance. On this Remembrance Day, as the echoes of the parade and ceremony fade, the community remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten. The Clock Tower stands as a silent sentinel, its hands ticking through the years but its purpose unwavering—to honour and remember the brave souls who gave their all for a better future.

Changes ahead for town centre The Stocksbridge Town Deal team have outlined their proposed timeline for the major transformation of the Manchester Road area in Stocksbridge.

A key part of the regeneration of the town centre is the brand-new Library and Community Hub building. The planning application for the town centre’s new anchor building is scheduled for submission next month. Ahead of the application being submitted the Town Deal team will be engaging with local businesses in the Manchester Road area about the plans and the wider vision for this part of the town. If the planning application is approved it is hoped that work can then start in May 2024 on the development site, delivering the brand-new landmark building which will house a modern new library as well as managed workspace and a skills and learning hub. There will also be flexible community space which it’s hoped can be used to provide services including pop-up banking. Essential survey work around the development site is taking place throughout November in the run-up to the application being submitted. The building has the working title of Stocksbridge 519 which relates to the street numbering on Manchester Road. This initial planning application will be followed by applications for the shop front improvement scheme in the precinct area and the plans for a new town square as well as upgraded paving and planters. Stocksbridge Town Deal Board Project Champion for the Library and Community Hub, Ian

Sanderson, said: “The submission of the planning application for the new 35,000 sq ft building is a great milestone in the delivery of our project which is at the heart of the town’s regeneration.

“This sets the standard for our vision for Manchester Road which is going to be game-changing for the town centre.” Work has already started this autumn on the Oxley Park Improvement Project and a separate planning application will be submitted next month for an All Wheels Park which is also being funded through the Stocksbridge Town Deal. Timeline of the town’s transformation:

December – scheduled submission of plans for Stocksbridge 519, the new Library and Community Hub building. December: Expressions of interest for operators of the Stocksbridge Hopper Bus service. December: Formal agreement with education provider to operate a post 16, adult learning and skills hub. December: Planning submission for the new All Wheels Park at Oxley Park February 2024: Tender period for construction and confirmation of a temporary location for Stocksbridge Library during construction on the main site. May 2024: Potential start of work on Stocksbridge 519.

The event, with around 120 competitors, would affect a number of routes in Penistone, Cawthorne, Wortley and Stocksbridge. Barnsley Council's cabinet is expected to decide whether to authorise the closures at a meeting on Wednesday. 'Never to be forgotten' According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, councillor James Higginbottom said: "Our primary responsibility is

to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. "The decision to approve or object will come with careful consideration and assessments on whether the event can be carried out safely and successfully." The Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club is one of the oldest clubs in the country, tracing its origins back to 1902. The club said the rally would "comprise four special stages using minor roads in predominantly low populated areas. "The loop of stages will be run twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon." It described the rally as a "never to be forgotten experience" for spectators.

FUNDRAISING FOR A WORTHY CAUSE

Jenny Garside, President of Penistone Women’s Institute presents a cheque for £1,500.00 to Linda Patterson, Chief Officer of BIADS

BEATING their previous year’s record the ladies of Penistone Women’s Institute raised a fantastic £1,500 for BIADS, their chosen charity for 2023. BIADS (Barnsley Independent Alzheimers And Support) help over 3,000 alzeimer sufferers, their carers and families in the Barnsley area. With such a worthy cause it was with much satisfaction and enjoyment that their many fundraising efforts were so successful.

At the last WI meeting, a cheque was presented to Linda Patterson, Chief Officer of BIADS who was extremely grateful and said “this amount will tremendously help the Barnsley community.” In particular Penistone WI would like to mention and thank the generosity of members attending the fundraising coffee morning at a member’s house, not forgetting the community of Penistone who supported the fundraising fashion show.

Dear Editor,

Thank you I would like to say a big thank you to the lady who got in a taxi after myself who found £30 that i had dropped. This happened on Monday 30 October and the lady handed to the driver who then handed back to me. I thank them both for their honesty.

We lost my Dad to cancer in 2015, just 18 months after we’d lost my Mum to the same illness.

Dad was cared for by the excellent Sue Ryder Nurses in his last days and we wanted to give something back to say thank you for helping us through one of the most difficult times in our lives. That’s how the charity’s December Daily Dash was born.

November 3, 2023- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Crawshaw, a beloved figure in the Stocksbridge community and the founder of the iconic establishments, John Crawshaw Butchers and Colins, Crawshaw Butchers PLC Brian's legacy is deeply intertwined with the recent history and heart of Stocksbridge/ Deepcar. In the early 1950s, he started his business from a small wooden hut on Manchester Road. Over the years Brian's dedication, hard work, insistence on quality and attention to detail developed the future culture of the businesses that progressed from the little green hut. Even after his early retirement Brian frequently visited the shop and butchery in Stocksbridge, staying engaged with the enterprise he had started and cherishing the interactions with both old and new faces, employ-

Remembering Cllr Vickie Priestley Vickie represented the Worrall Ward for 25 years and had served four times as Bradfield Parish Chair. Vickie was also a serving City Councillor and a past Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Vickie was well known for her commitment and dedication to the Parish and worked hard for the community groups she represented. Vickie will be sadly missed by all her friends, colleagues and the residents she served. Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Colin Ross, said:

“Vickie was so well respected amongst her colleagues, and it speaks volumes that the same feelings I have today, are felt right across the chamber and amongst officers in the Council. “Vickie first became a Councillor for the Stannington Ward in 2000 and continued to represent the ward up to her passing. Vickie was also a former Lord Mayor of Sheffield from 2013-2014. "Both Vickie and her husband, Lloyd, made a great impression as they carried out their Lord Mayor duties, and I am sure many of the groups and individuals they encountered will be very sad to hear of the news of her death. “My thoughts are with Vickie’s family and friends at this difficult time.” Sheffield City Council will be flying the Union flag at half-mast in memory of Cllr Vickie Priestley. A book of condolence has been opened in the Blue Ball at Worrall.

Stocksbridge fall short Stocksbridge 8-13 Hornsea

After the storms and rain of the previous week, a pitch inspection passed the Coal Pit Lane field fit to play as Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby hosted Hornsea RUFC from the East Coast in their Round 7 clash of the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition. Head Coach, Andy Lawrence sprung a surprise in selecting Callum ‘Whippet’ Green, usually a winger, to partner Reece ‘Diesel’ Aspin, and Liam O’Leary on the back row. More good news was the return of the ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal to take his place on the bench after an injury layoff, and former skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst also returning to the match day squad. The home side started brightly and it wasn’t long before the rampaging Liam O’Leary crossed for the opening score of the day. A well-timed interception from Jack Pearson and some neat interplay with young flyer Harrison Norman should have led to a further score from the home side, but somehow the visitors held their line against a dominant Stocksbridge outfit. Hornsea got their scoring started with a simple penalty, and veteran goal kicker Scotty Bowskill was also on target with a precise strike to extend the lead at halftime: Stocksbridge Rugby 8pts – Hornsea RUFC 3pts. A much-needed win looked on the cards for the home side, who had the best of both territory and possession in the 2nd stanza, but the final pass was missing as Hornsea took advantage of a hole in the Stocksbridge blue wall to draw level with a try of their own, and then went into a slender lead with the conversion tagged on. A late penalty for the visitors sealed their hard-earned victory, and left the home

side frustrated and a little disappointed not to secure a victory their efforts deserved. The defeat leaves Stocksbridge in 12th place on the league ladder. Club Captain, Adam Frith said afterwards ‘This is frustrating, we were clearly the better team and our defence stood up really well’ before adding, ‘we will keep going, and be positive and look forward to getting the result next time out’. The Funding Solutions Man of the Match award went to the industrious Liam O’Leary, who was a threat all afternoon, with Pearson, Harrison and young Jack ‘milky’ Martin all putting in performances to be proud of. Stocksbridge Rugby travel to West Yorkshire to visit Knottingley RUFC next weekend in a Round 8 clash, whilst the next home fixture sponsored by Premier Stone Worktops Ltd will in Round 9, when Leeds Medics and Dentists will be the visitors on Saturday 2nd December with a 2.15pm start. The Club will enjoy another ‘bye’ on 25th November. Off the field, and after a successful trial period the Club’s HQ on Manchester Road has increased it’s mid-week opening hours, opening at midday every day, except Tuesday when it will remain closed, until 9pm on Wednesday, 11pm on Sunday, 11.30pm on Monday and Thursday, with Friday and Saturday remaining at midnight. Christmas and the holiday period opening hours will be announced soon, so look out for this.

Steels woes continue Cyclocross

ambition

Barnsley Sixth Form College student, Oliver Akers, is gearing up to achieve his dream of becoming an elite Cyclocross World Champion. The English Language and Literature, Geography and Physical Education A Level student took up cycling aged four. He now trains and represents Ribble - Verge Sport Cyclocross Team, where he cycles for 25 hours a week to perfect his balance, strength, flexibility, agility and endurance. Oliver currently competes at an international level and has come first in many category races. His greatest achievement to date is winning a World Cup round in Dublin, Ireland and wearing the GB kit on many occasions. Oliver is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and works on his strength with the coaching staff. This has enabled

Stocksbridge PS 0-1 North Ferriby

him to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects of his competition such as equipment and travel. Oliver said: “I didn’t decide to get into cycling, it came naturally when I was very young and I have continued ever since then. I am immensely proud that I have never been off the podium at the Koppenberg, which is an international race in Belgium, attracting more than 40,000 fans on a cold day in November. “My main goal in sport is to become an elite Cyclocross World Champion, but before that happens I am looking forward to gaining as much experience as possible over the coming years. “I’m looking forward to receiving a bursary from Barnsley College, as this will enable me to travel to more races and gain more, much needed experience.”

Stocksbridge Park Steels continued their poor run of form with a 1-0 loss to North Ferriby. Steels started brightly and could have been ahead if not for the bodies on the line defending North Ferriby. A looped ball was headed towards the goal by the debutant Charlie Reaney. However, a dream start for him was denied by his effort being cleared off the line. Stocksbridge would then be punished for not making the most of their bright start. A corner was whipped in with some pace and Levi Torbotton rushed through the defence to head in the cross, giving North Ferriby the lead. For Stocksbridge, a familiar pattern would resume. They’d have a lot of the ball and they could get it into the box but they wouldn’t get the killer ball or have it drop in just the right place. It wasn’t helped by North Ferriby’s do-or-die defending which seemed to result in every Steels shot hitting the back of a sliding Ferriby defender. In the second half, it was very much the same deal. Stocksbridge had a lot of the ball but was not able to create much of a clear-cut nature, meaning real big chances were limited. However, one massive opportunity was denied. Curtis Davies’ shot took a big deflection and fell to Reaney on the edge of the six-yard area. He looked to curl his effort in, but Jordan Douglas made a stunning save to make sure the three points would head back to Humberside. Next Home game: Saturday 25 November vs Cleethorpes Town, 3pm KO.
