TEENAGE FOOTBALLER’S LIFE SAVED BY DEFIBRILLATOR Mum says, “There should be one at every sports ground, in every school and on every street corner.” By James Evans A DEFIBRILLATOR was used to save the life of a 14-year-old footballer in Oughtibridge at the weekend – and his parents say the devices “should be on every street corner.” Daniel Lowe, who represents Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Under-15 Yellow, was involved in the game against Maltby Main at Forge Lane, Oughtibridge, when he collapsed and suffered a heart attack.

SAVED: Daniel Lowe, 14, is recovering from his heart attack.

The referee then called for the defibrillator, which was installed last year and donated by the Daniel Wilkinson Foundation, and coach Nick Dodsworth and two nurses from Maltby shocked him to try to get his heart beating and back to the normal rhythm.

He was down for several minutes and once the ambulance arrived, the coach and two nurses continued to help and managed to get him stable enough to take to the hospital. The youngster is now recovering and his parents have hailed the quick thinking actions of those who came to his aid. Daniel’s mother, Lynsey Lowe, said in a letter to the club: “My husband and I want to thank everyone who was at the match on Sunday. “Everyone contributed in saving my son’s life, from the referee who knew a defibrillator existed, the parents who ran speedily to bring it and the parents who lined the route for the ambulance to gain access.

“Plus, of course, the nurses and our coach Nick that started giving him CPR at the scene, bringing him back to life. “Their quick thinking not only saved his life but brought him back to us without any mental deficits. “He is recovering amazingly and is spending time in hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary, where they are investigating what caused his cardiac arrest. “This life saving piece of equipment is priceless. If we have learnt from the tragic event please let it be that these defibrillators are at every sports ground, in every school and on every street corner.” A spokesperson for Stocksbridge Park Steels told Look

Local: “From all of us at Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club, we want to wish Daniel a speedy recovery and that we are going to ensure safety is a priority for everyone.” Park Steels junior chairman and referee at the match, Ian Cavanagh, told Look Local: “I can’t praise highly enough the conduct and efforts from both sets of players, parents, coaches and the paramedic team. “I witnessed some true heroes in action on Sunday and I’m very proud and honoured to be part of Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C.” League funding is available to help with the cost of defibrillators, more details are available at https://junleague.com/news. php?newsid=2675.

THREE ARRESTED AND RELEASED ON BAIL IN CONNECTION WITH RUNNER’S DEATH THREE people arrested in connection with the murder of Gary Dean have been bailed pending further enquiries. Two people, a 40-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman, were re-arrested by police on suspicion of murder earlier this week, in connection with Mr Dean’s death. A 49-yearold woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All three were arrested on Thursday November 22 but have now been bailed pending further enquiries. Mr Dean, 48, was found with significant injuries in a wooded area behind Moorend Lane, Silkstone Common, close to the Trans Pennine Trail, at around 5.40pm on Thursday September 6. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “Our inquiry has been ongo-

ing since 6 September, with dedicated staff investigating this awful offence of murder. I’m still appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact the police. The investigation continues and anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 628 of 6 September 2018. Yorkshire Ramblers tackle Kanchenjunga trek to cap their 125th year I only wish I could be back there again with you.”

meets each year most in the UK.

Alan has climbed not only 8,586m (28,169 ft) Kanchenjunga but all 14 of the world’s 8,000m peaks – the only Brit to have achieved this feat.

Despite the club’s name, members rarely simply ramble and are not confined to Yorkshire and members from Oxford, Inverness, Norway and Australia are on this trek.

The YRC group returned to Manchester from Kathmandu with enough time to shower and change before their annual dinner marking the end of the Club’s 125th year. This event will be held at Settle’s Falcon Manor and be addressed by the President of the Alpine Club, John Porter.

A DOZEN Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club recently reached the site of Kanchenjunga’s north base camp on the 15th day of their 22-day Himalayan trek organised by YRC Honorary member Motup Gomba and his Rimo Expeditions team. It took them a week to get to a roadhead and in contact with Yorkshire. One member on this trek is Worrall’s Michael Smith who has lead YRC mountaineering trips to various parts of the

Bolivian Andes, Svalbard, Greenland’s Liverpool Land, Malawi’s Mulanje massif and Nepal’s Mera Peak. As they set out for Nepal, leading Yorkshire mountaineer and Honorary member, Alan Hinkes OBE wished them well saying: “Kanchenjunga is an arduous and challenging trek to BC (basecamp) but very worthwhile with impressive scenery culminating in spectacular views of the third highest mountain in the world.

Trekking is only one of the YRC’s wide ranging activities. 2018 has seen them rock climbing in Spain, winter mountaineering in Scotland, caving in Romania and hill walking in Ireland and Wales besides meetings in their Clapham and Little Langdale clubhouses. The Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club welcomes independent minded hillwalkers, cavers and the like whatever their level of experience (membership@yrc.org. uk) and holds about twenty weekend or week-long sociable

Kanchenjunga was first climbed by two Brits, Joe Brown and George Band, in 1955 two years after Everest was first climbed. Kanchenjunga’s ascent is more demanding than that of Everest. Out of respect for the local cultural significance of the mountain’s summit, climbers stop short of the last few feet. This third highest mountain in the world straddles the border between Nepal and India’s Sikkim. Weather was good for the trek though cold for the several days above 4,000m. It rained during daylight hours for only half-anhour but also during a couple of nights. Leeches were a minor problem in the lower little-used temporary sections of the trail taken to avoid landslips. There are seven YRC members living in Sheffield.

WEDNESDAY FANS SHOW CHRISTMAS SPIRIT AHEAD of the Championship clash between Sheffield Wednesday FC and Derby County FC this Saturday, S6 Foodbank and their team of volunteers hosted two drop-off points for food donations at Hillsborough. Twin gazebos were present from midday through to kick-off on the bridge next to the South Stand and at the Owls Megastore for fans to bring food items to give. All donations are recorded digitally by S6 Foodbank and will be tailored for the individual or respective group in need. It was hoped that the event would provide much needed relief to many this Christmas period and raise awareness of the rising need since the government introduced Universal Credit. Sheffield Wednesday’s involvement with S6 Foodbank came about following an intervention by local Councillor Ben Curran. He said: “I know no one wants to have to rely on using a foodbank, but it is a sad fact of recent

times that more and more people are dependent on them. “I already work closely in supporting S6 Foodbank and I know that Wednesday do some terrific work in the community, and I don’t just say that as I’m an Owl, so I thought it would be only natural to bring them together to see what could be done. “I’m delighted that I have been able to play my part in the new initiative and huge credit must go to Mr Chansiri and everyone at the Club for being so open to this idea. “It is worth bearing in mind that the majority of people who rely on foodbanks are in-work. There should be no shame in turning to a foodbank to support you or your family, and I hope that fellow Wednesday fans will give and support this cause”. Marcus Brameld, Community Manager at SWFC, commented “Christmas is the traditional time of year for everyone to celebrate togetherness with family and friends. So this weekend is the ideal opportunity for the

Wednesday family to come together and offer the hand of friendship to those in the community that need it the most. “Sheffield Wednesday are proud to be in partnership with S6 Foodbank and we urge as many of our supporters as possible to make a donation, however big or small, on Saturday.” Chris from S6 Foodbank said: “The partnership with Sheffield Wednesday shows the backing of business in the city and their heart for community, Sheffield is a great city for supporting people in need and this is another example of this in action, as a foodbank we have seen an increase of 25% since April and with the onset of winter plus Universal Credit the numbers could increase, so every tin helps.” The foodbank said they were “overwhelmed” by the response with generous donations helping to replenish the supplies.

Vast majority of local roads resurfaced since 2012 East Ecclesfield (80%), West Ecclesfield (81%) and Stocksbridge (85%) all scoring higher than the city wide average. This information also follows last year’s National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction Survey which revealed that satisfaction with the city’s roads has almost doubled over the past decade.

Councillor Steve Wilson NEW figures have revealed that north Sheffield roads are in a considerably better state than in previous years, with the vast majority resurfaced as part of the Streets Ahead project.

Figures detail that for the average council ward in the city 72% of roads will likely have been resurfaced since the start of the council’s Streets Ahead project. In addition many local wards saw an even greater share of their roads resurfaced – with

In 2012 Sheffield City Council began a huge city-wide highways maintenance contract with Amey to upgrade and maintain the condition of the city’s roads, pavements, street lights, bridges and other items on or around our streets. The Streets-Ahead programme is the largest highway investment contract ever seen in Sheffield, worth £2 billion, and has seen around 800 miles of road resurfaced across all areas of the city.

Commenting on the figures East Ecclesfield and Labour Councillor Steve Wilson said: “These figures show what a difference there has been to our roads. “This is something that matters to a lot of people in our area and I am really pleased with the progress made. The roads really did need drastic improvement and I’m pleased Labour councillors forced this change.

BURNCROSS Action Team invited Year One and Year Two pupils from Angram Bank and Windmill Hill Primary schools to paint their own designs onto pebbles to be displayed in the Burncross Gateway Garden. Both children and volunteers were delighted with the results. “The wildflower garden can look rather dull as winter approaches and the colourful pebbles will brighten the area. We hope that some of the children will visit with their families to search for their pebbles,” said a volunteer. A raffle organised by the Acorn Inn funded the project.

Sheffield man who cannot be named jailed for “decades of sexual abuse” A 57-year-old Sheffield man has been convicted of a string of sexual offences against young children, following a two-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court charged with a catalogue of sexual offences against child relatives, including multiple counts of rape and sexual assault.

On Friday November 23, he was found guilty of five counts of rape and five counts of sexual assault. He was also found guilty of two counts of cruelty, three counts of sexual activity with a child family member under 13, one count causing a person to engage with sexual activity without consent and one count of causing a child to engage with sexual activity without consent. He was immediately sentenced to 24years in prison.

The charges relate to three children, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, who were all under 18 at the time of the abuse. Detective Constable Nick Johnson, the investigating officer, said: “This is a substantial sentence for the significant and prolonged sexual abuse of three young victims, all of whom have shown tremendous strength and bravery throughout our investigation.

“Our inquiry began in 2015, when one of the victims made the incredibly courageous decision to come forward and report his horrific crimes. We were able to identify further victims and uncovered this man’s prolific offending, which spanned two decades. “I am pleased he has been sent to prison for his crimes, though this will never be able to undo the damage caused to his victims. I only hope that with this conviction and sentencing, they feel able to

move forward with their lives knowing that their abuser is behind bars.” Please note that victims of sexual offences are guaranteed anonymity under the Sexual Offences Act. Anyone who posts information that identifies a victim, or information that could lead to the identification of a victim, is breaking the law. Due to the nature of the charges in this case, neither the offender nor the victims can be identified.

LIB DEMS AND CONSERVATIVES NAME CANDIDATES on Barnsley Council for the Liberal Democrats. Hannah believes her experience as a councillor, at work, helping to run a local business and raising a family in South Yorkshire all give her the right perspective to take on the role of parliamentary candidate and be a fresh and effective voice for Penistone and Stocksbridge. Hannah has announced her candidacy just days after momentum activists passed a vote of noconfidence in local Labour MP Angela Smith. Hannah has pledged to work for everybody in the local area, and to listen to residents’ views regardless of their political leanings or party affiliations.

BOTH the Liberal Democrats and Conservative parties have named their parliamentary candidates for the Stocksbridge & Penistone seat at next general election. Penistone and Stocksbridge Liberal Democrats have selected local Councillor Hannah Kitching. She lives just outside Penistone with her husband

Miriam is married with three children, owns a software company and is a fully qualified science teacher. She was selected by members of the Penistone & Stocksbridge Conservative Association on Wednesday October 24. A parish councillor in the constituency, Miriam will campaign to become the first ever Conservative MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge. She says that her campaign will focus on delivering housing that is sensitive to local communities, improving public transport infrastructure and raising educational standards. “I am honoured and delighted to be selected as the Conservative candidate for Penistone & Stocksbridge,” Miriam said.

“I am proud to call this area my home, and my commitment to our local community will enable me to represent the people of Penistone & Stocksbridge with real integrity. “Only the Conservatives can build a country that works for everyone with a stronger, fairer economy and a more compassionate society.”

She added: “I want to become MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge to serve the people of this constituency. I want to stand up for Yorkshire values of hard work, fairness and community spirit and make sure we all have the opportunity to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.”

Sixty-five students are staging the romantic comedy musical Grease, which explores the highs and lows of being a teenager in the 1950s.

Jo Beadle, Performing Arts Lecturer at The Sheffield College, said: “We’ve had a lot of fun working on this show, which is an important part of the students’ coursework and

helps them to develop the skills that the performing arts industry needs.” She added: “It’s a great, uplifting musical for the festive season and an all time favourite that appeals to a wide audience.” The students are completing the Performing and Production Arts Level 3 qualifica-

tion at Hillsborough campus, which has the latest performing arts facilities including a state-of-the-art drama theatre. Students will be performing four shows on December 4, 5, 6 and 7 at 7.15pm in the drama theatre at the College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street. For tickets, please email info@sheffcol.ac.uk.

NEW HOMES FOR SHEFFIELD SHEFFIELD, like many other major cities, has a growing population and a growing demand for new homes.

Around 2,000 homes are needed in the city per year over the next five years for the young, older people, families and those who are vulnerable. These homes need to be either homes for sale or to rent. The new homes delivery plan, launched this week, aims to meet these needs which will mean that people in Sheffield will live in good quality, affordable, safe and secure homes. The council say that the plan will: • Maintain the current level of homes being built and improve the range on offer. • See the building of these 2,000 new homes, which will include over 725 new af-

fordable homes per year for the next five years to meet housing need.

• See the council working with the public and private sector to deliver the much needed homes. • Support the council’s intention to prioritise brownfield land to bring back into use land that has not been used for many years. • Bring existing empty housing back into use. Building more homes will mean that it will be easier to free up and make the best use of the city’s existing stock. Many people are struggling to afford to live in a home that they can afford across all types and tenures of housing. The council will work with the private and public sector to address the significant shortfall in affordable homes for

rent and the under-occupancy in many areas. Both quality and choice of housing will be significantly improved across the whole city. The council‘s approach is designed to reduce the inequality gap and not fuel it. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development said: “Our homes matter to us. They are the foundations of a strong community and, at a very basic level, they are a major factor in deciding whether we feel safe, warm and cared for. We want to have a more inclusive and successful city, so we need our housing to offer choice, be affordable and provide good quality homes for all. We will only grow and prosper as a city if we do this and if we do it right. People will only want to stay here and come to live here if there is housing that meets their needs.”

Firefighters tackle Chapeltown house fire caused by candle A MAN was given treatment for smoke inhalation after a fire in his Chapeltown home – which was caused by candles. Firefighters from Rotherham, Elm Lane and Tankersley stations were called to the incident, on Smith Street at 5.15pm on Sunday November 18. Upon arrival they found a fire in the ground floor living room. Breathing apparatus wearers entered the building to extinguish the fire before clearing the

smoke using positive pressure ventilation. After the incident was dealt with, and the occupant had been given treatment by paramedics, it emerged that this fire had started when the flame from a candle, which was on a windowsill, spread to a set of window blinds. Crews also noted that there were no smoke alarms in the property and installed two before leaving. Following the incident the service is re-iterating its safety advice regards candles, and smoke alarms.

STOCKSBRIDGE CO-OP DONATE OVER £14,000 TO LOCAL CAUSES

Working smoke alarms provide early warning when fire hits. Buy them, fit them to every level of your home and test them weekly. It only takes two minutes. It is safer to use battery operated candles, but if you are going to use wax ones they should be kept well away from curtains, clothes and other flammable materials. They should also be kept out of reach of children and pets, placed on a heat resistant surface and carefully extinguished before you go to bed.

FAMILIES are being given the opportunity to pick their own Norwegian Spruce and even cut down their own tree to take home for a magical Christmas. Grandad John Johnson has busily been planting the trees over the past 12 years and what began as planting 50 trees for each grandchild that arrived into the Johnson family now sees over 2,000 trees in Ewden Valley. John, who used to be Father Christmas in Bolsterstone, still

keeps the Christmas spirit well and truly alive in the village. There’s even a bear hunt for the kids whilst mum and dad are busy cutting down their tree. The kids receive home-made gingerbread men, chocolate, Satsumas and even a present! John is also giving some of the proceeds of his tree sales to charity, with Sheffield Children’s Hospital the lucky recipient.

Trees can be purchased from Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery every day with bear hunts taking place every Saturday and Sunday in December. Make your Christmas extra special this year and treat the family to a magical start to this year’s festivities. Please call John Johnson on 07957 549136 for further details.

Local author to drop anchor in Fox Valley LOCAL author Suzy Senior has penned a swashbuckling Christmas tale like no other with her new book, ‘A Pirate Christmas: The Nativity Story’. This will be on Saturday December 1, with crafts, activities, a treasure hunt and interactive Pirate Nativity performances take place on the bandstand at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Fox Valley have been brilliant, and we are very grateful for all their help. Illustrated by Andy Catling, the book tells the story of Pirate Dad, Joe, and Cannon the Ship's Guinea Pig, who are sadly stuck on their ship and missing the annual Buccaneer's Ball. To cheer them up, Pirate Dad pulls out an old book, and begins to read a Christmassy story. Rev Hilda Isaacson, who represents one of the churches involved said: “Shiver me timbers! The students took the opportunity to ask Paul questions related to coaching, athlete development and sport science. Paul said: “I visited Barnsley College and University Campus Barnsley to share with students the opportunities available to them after their studies and how anything is possible with the right mind-set. “It is vital for students to gain an idea of the life and commitment involved in sports. It was an honour to talk to the students and hopefully inspire the next generation.” Dan Connolly, Sport Higher Education Pathway Leader at UCB, added: “We were grateful and thrilled when Paul spoke to our students about the sacrifices you have to make as a footballer and manager, and the opportunities available to our students within the sport industry. I’d really like to thank Paul for sharing his vision with our students.” To find out more about University Campus Barnsley or Barnsley College Sport courses call 01226 216 165, visit universitycampus.barnsley.ac.uk, www.barnsley.ac.uk or email info@barnsley.ac.uk.

LATE DRAMA IN CHURCH GAME IT was an eventful game to say the least as Penistone Church lost 1-0 to Worksop Town in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday.

Matthew Sykes scored the winning goal via a 93rd minute penalty but an excellent game was marred by an after match altercation resulting in four red cards. Brett Lovell and Sam Scrivens for Church and Michael Trench and Kyle Jordan for Worksop were the recipients. In another blow for Church, Nathan Keightley suffered what is suspected to be a broken ankle. Church manager Ian Richards commented after the game: “Firstly it’s just apologies, really, as to how the game ended. It’s not how me and Dave

Hampshire (club secretary) who lead this club on and off the pitch want to be measured against and reflected against. “I don’t condone that from my players whatever the instigation was, whatever the provocation was, whatever the result is on the pitch. I see my players as a reflection of me on and off the pitch and they’ve let themselves down a little bit there and Dave said some who came to watch didn’t quite reflect him and the football club as a community club that are supportive. “Unfortunately it detracted from a very good football match, a football match we were at the wrong end of but we’re always performance driven and we were the better team today.

“They’ve come with a clear game plan, they’ve come with seven defensive minded players, and they’ve set up with a back five where the two full backs didn’t go too far forward especially the right back and they’ve gone with two midfielders, Max Pemberton who can play centre-half of left-back and Danny Patterson who is a holding midfielder. They defended on the edge of their eighteen yard box.

“Huge credit and respect to us and compliment to the players and if that last couple of minutes on the pitch and that ten minutes after the final whistle hadn’t have happened I would have been in that changing room praising my players saying what a performance they had.

“Sometimes it doesn’t happen in front of goal it wasn’t that they weren’t knocking at the door, they weren’t probing they weren’t trying, they weren’t trying different things they weren’t working hard to score it was one of those days and with a few minutes to go I said to my assistant Duncan, I’ll take a point, it’s not being there, another clean sheet, we go again and it continues our unbeaten run then there was a little bit of indiscipline where we didn’t go back and play three versus two once they’d done the header and then we made a wrong decision on the penalty by diving in which gave the ref no choice and to be fair to Matt Sykes it’s a composed finish in the last minute. “I’m disappointed with that result, I’m disappointed with what happened after but the performance was very good, it

was a high quality game and we just have to be prepared for that now. “I now have to look forward now and see what match bans Brett Lovell and Sam Scrivens get for the incident after the match, try and look at replacements and look how we adapt to that. “Another negative was the loss of Nathan Keightley, there’s rumour coming out that he might have broken his ankle. I’m gutted for the lad, he’s had no injuries, he’s 19 he’s been fine, he’s playing really well, it was an innocuous injury it wasn’t a bad challenge. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious. “We now have to dust ourselves down and we learn from our experiences, we train on Wednesday and put it right against Staveley away next week.”

WHEELERS RIDE OUT LAST Sunday Birdwell Wheelers were joined by members of Team Manvers Triathlon Club for the weekly club run. Steels concede six in crushing defeat

Cleethorpes 6-2 Stocksbridge PS By Dave Rhodes STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels arrived at lowly Cleethorpes Town knowing that the fixture was a real six pointer and that a solid performance would be needed. Certainly, Steels’ soft centre should not rear its ugly head today as it had over recent performances. Again Manager Chris Hilton had to juggle his already depleted squad as injuries took their toll. For Steels supporters it would have been expected that the team should keep it tight for the first 20, see what the opposition has to offer, be hard to break down, be tenacious, win tackles and be in the game. Sadly all the best laid plans come apart when the basic requirements of football are not met - 2-0 down after 20 minutes due to second balls not being won, reactions and anticipations being too slow. Both goals from dead ball play were gifts under the circumstances. Steels did rally a little and played some bright penetrative football

mainly due to Williams but didn’t really test the home goalkeeper to any degree and perhaps should have done with half the chances being created. Steels were back in the game after 30 minutes when Litchfield’s persistence was rewarded, winning the first heading dual 25 yards from goal and picking up the loose ball, he slammed home a nice left footed shot from 10 yards out central to goal. A lift for the Steels team, and at this point deservedly so, but it was on the home side’s next venture forward that Steels found themselves, frustratingly, 3-1 down. A volleyed effort from 20 yards that seemed to go straight through the surprised Amissah. Cleethorpes became confident, were threatening and authoritative as half time approached as Steels tried hard to pull a goal back on the counter. Certainly the next goal would be key to which way the game was going to go. Unfortunately for the Steels, it went the home side’s way on 43 minutes,

a real killer blow as the lively Daniel North was allowed to freely progress into a shooting position on the left cutting onto his right foot and sending a curling shot in off Amissah’s left hand post. Too easy for the home side, really poor work from the away side and Steels 4-1 down as the half time whistle went. They were 5-1 down after 55 minutes, the game was becoming an embarrassment for Steels supporters. It was too easy for Alex Flett, the Cleethorpes captain, to come onto a left wing pass, taking three touches before firing in a side footed shot easily past Amissah. The shot was well placed from 18 yards out but without power so credit the player, but again disappointing for Steels, defending 30 yards from goal. On the hour Steels looked gone, out of it with too much of a mountain to climb, it seemed that everything Cleethorpes had hit had gone in but the home side had taken the reins, the initiative and thrived on the goals scored as confidence levels rose.

Litchfield’s second goal was a calm finish in the box as he slotted the ball wide of Dylan Parkin with an angled effort from 10 yards. Again he had skilfully manufactured the chance himself, hopefully his goals will now give him much needed confidence. The goal hadn’t affected Cleethorpes’ approach to the game as a disjointed Steels went through the motions, huffed and puffed and seemed to let the opposition exploit spaces on the pitch with ease. The deflated Steels boys conceded a corner late in the game, swung in from the right gave Cleethorpes inexcusably a free header in the six yard box. Amissah parried out but the ball fell to a Cleethorpes forward to tap in from close range.

STRACHAN Sampson’s hat-trick fired Oughtibridge War Memorial to a 5-2 win against Wickersley Youth at the weekend.

Players will know and must take responsibility, take on board both the poor performance and the result as just not good enough.

The home side took time to settle and almost went ahead when Chas Tunnard fired at the keeper and Matt Harrison looked certain to score when he had just the keeper to beat but also shot straight at the Wickersley goalkeeper.

Next up its Spalding United on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

Results and news update from Stocksbridge Golf Club SATURDAY saw Stocksbridge Golf Club’s Professional’s Prize competition for November keenly fought in calm and relatively mild conditions. The early mist cleared quickly and 36 members had a good chance to score well. I. Hulbert won with a highly creditable 41 points, beating C. Walker into second place with the same score but with a better back nine. P. Finney came in third with 40 points and playing off a handicap of four, impressively played to

scratch, not a common occurrence at the challenging course. Club gents champion, S. Clayton, came in fourth with 38 points. The course remains in excellent condition, with fairways still firm and the greens consistent and relatively fast for the time of year. The good condition of the course is down to the hard work of the green keepers and members who volunteer with a range of tasks, including president John Yeates who routinely goes around the

SAMPSON HITS TREBLE

course with grass and sand mix to repair the fairway divots. The club has recently invested £5,000 on essential greens maintenance, particularly to contain fusarium blight, a fungus that causes rings of grass to die off. So far it seems to be paying dividends. Club professional Roger Broad commended the hard work of the course staff “to get the greens at the club to the highest standard all year round.”

War Memorial moved into second place in the league with the win at the War Memorial Ground.

Wickersley’s Kris Lee-Green then scored the only goal of the first half with literally the last kick of the half but Oughtibridge levelled when Sampson scored his first with a superbly executed overhead. Dan Broomhead played in Sampson for his and Oughtibridge’s second to give the home side the lead before two home penalties put the home side in command thanks firstly to Chas Tunnard after Danny Booth had been brought down. And the sparkling Sampson made no mistake when Olly Black was upended. A Tom Galloway own goal reduced the lead to 4-2 but Dan Broomhead had the last say with a fifth home goal and his first for the club. Oughtibridge face Renishaw down at the memorial this Sunday and victory will take the to the top of the table.
