FUNDRAISING TARGET SET AS PLAYER LEAVES HOSPITAL DANIEL Lowe, the teenage footballer saved by a defibrillator last weekend, has been discharged from hospital and has been reunited with his Stocksbridge Park Steels team mates. The under 15 Yellows have had a week that they will probably never forget. Last Sunday they were devastated when their friend and team mate had a heart attack while playing. The heroics of several individuals kept him alive and he ended up in the special Heart Hospital in Leeds, where he underwent heart surgery. The trauma of the ordeal has affected a lot of people and through social media, people from around the country have sent best wishes and get well messages. So it was some surprise when just seven days later, Daniel requested to join his team mates and go back to the pitch where the incident took place. Daniel, fifth from the left, was surrounded by ecstatic and relieved players and managers. Daniel’s family have been keen to use the unfortunate incident as a way of raising awareness of defibrillators. His father said in a statement: “I would like to thank everyone who was at Daniel’s match “Their quick thinking not only saved his life but on Sunday. brought him back to us without any mental defi“Everyone contributed to saving our son’s life. There is free screening available from an organisation called CRY. Screening in Italy has reduced the occurrence of sudden cardiac death by 89%. Please

HILLSBOROUGH BURGLAR JAILED A 30-YEAR-OLD Hillsborough man is starting a three-year prison sentence after being convicted of burglary.

Dominic Ransom, of Leppings Lane, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday November 21. He pleaded guilty to two burglaries and was sentenced to three years in prison. On August 7 of this year, Ransom broke into a house on Wadsley Lane in Shef-

field, stealing watches, wallets and an amount of cash.

On August 13, he broke into a second house, this time on Stanwood Crescent in Sheffield, stealing laptops and a wallet. Investigations led officers to Ransom’s home on September 6 where he was found hiding in a kitchen cupboard. He was subsequently arrested.

Investigating Officer PC David Stacey said: “We are pleased with the sentence that Ransom has received; burglary can have a long-term impact on victims, especially in cases like these where the homeowner witnessed Ransom in action. “Our officers worked hard to track Ransom down and I hope the community are reassured by his sentence.”

Young bards praised for 12th Night performance DEEPCAR St John’s CE Junior School have recently performed a Shakespearian play, Twelfth Night, at Barnsley Civic Theatre. This was part of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation Shakespeare Festival for schools. Miss Anne Danks, a Y4 teacher, successfully applied for some funding from the BlueSpark Foundation. This enabled the pupils to gain an invaluable experience to perform in a professional theatre both in acting and in technical roles - learning how to work the lights and sound to bring the production to life.

The children were initially very nervous but performed the play superbly in front an audience. They were brilliant at learning their difficult lines and were praised by the Shakespeare Schools Foundation professionals for their understanding of the language of Shakespeare and their characterisation. Their comedic performance of the exaggerated characters in Twelfth Night brought laughter from the audience who, like the actors and technicians, thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Oughtibridge Village Made draws in the crowds

6th December 2018

www.looklocal.org.uk

MP backs campaign to improve access to financial support for terminally ill ALONG with actors Jim Carter and Nichola McAuliffe, Angela Smith MP is backing a campaign that will enable more terminally ill people to access benefits more quickly and easily, regardless of the condition they have. The MND Association and Marie Curie are working together to push for a change in the law that will enable more terminally ill people get quicker access to the benefits they need to live well until they die. Currently, someone is only considered terminally ill if there is a reasonable expectation of having six or less months left to live.

By Ewan Pendleton

a Thursday evening at the end of November.

WITH Christmas just around the corner, some residents of Oughtibridge were working like elves to get themselves ready for the annual Christmas market, Village Made. With over a dozen stalls stocking all manner of handmade delights, such as sweet smelling soaps, brilliantly decorative baubles and candles, jewellery and tasty treats, everything for sale was produced locally. Village Made has been running for almost a decade now and interest in it certainly hasn’t wavered as time has progressed. This year, well over a hundred people braved the bitter weather to attend the market held in Oughtibridge Chapel on

There was something there for people of all ages. Christmas themed crafting workshops were available for adults and children, with both of which being fully booked up in advance. Traditional festive themed snacks and refreshments like mince pies and mulled wine were also on offer to keep the customers content. Not forgetting Oughtibridge brass band, who accompanied the proceedings with some Christmas tunes to add to the already lively atmosphere. With the ever growing popularity of online shopping and big brand stores, the people of Oughtibridge know that it is important to get involved with nights like

these - which was shown by the excellent turn out of both patrons and stall holders. Indeed, such was the demand for stalls, some people opted to share. Founder and co-organiser of Village Made, Kristen Berry, strongly believes that there is still a place for this type of community event. She said: “We all buy things online because it’s easier and I don’t think that’s going to stop, we can order something and it arrives at our house.” “But I think people do appreciate the fact that things here are made locally. Having it come right from your village from someone who’s made it that lives a few blocks away from you is a nice thing to do.”

This definition excludes people with complex and unpredictable terminal conditions from accessing the financial support they need in a timely manner. The current bureaucratic process for accessing crucial benefits can be lengthy, complex and instructive. The change in the law will allow clinicians to determine whether a person is terminally ill, instead of an arbitrary time-limit decided in years gone-by. This would mean that people with complex and unpredictable terminal illnesses, such as motor neurone disease, can apply for benefits in a way far better suited to their needs and circumstances. Angela said: “Chances are, we all know someone who’s been affected by a terminal illness, so it’s absolutely crucial that we make sure that

anyone facing such a difficult time gets all the care and support they need, when they need it. That is why I’m backing the ‘scrap6months’ campaign.” Scott Sinclair, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Marie Curie, said: “Having the support of Angela, Jim and Nichola makes a huge difference to the campaign. “The current welfare system for terminally ill people is unfair and outdated, and results in cruel and distressing treatment for people who are at the end of their lives. “Nobody with a terminal illness should have to face multiple assessments and back-to-work interviews when the stark fact is that they are dying and have limited time left.” Marie Curie is there for everyone affected by a terminal illness, including those with cancer, dementia, heart or lung disease, and neurological conditions like motor neurone disease. If you’re living with a terminal illness or caring for someone, call the Marie Curie Support Line on 0800 090 2309 for support, or go to mariecurie.org.uk/help. The Access to Welfare (Terminal Illness Definition) Bill is seeking to change the current definition of terminal illness to allow terminally ill people to access benefits quicker, easier, and in a way that best suits the individual.

Greener Worrall goes for red

Local News

Local winners in awards ceremony LOCAL school girl Molly Hayes, 10, attended the Sheffield Star Superkids awards on Monday after being nominated for the Fearless Bravery Award by her school. Molly, who attends Deepcar St John’s Junior School, was one of several finalists to receive a certificate from mascot Theo the Bear. Molly was put forward for the award after a tough year being in and out the Children’s Hopsital with a heart condition that nearly took her life. In March, Molly became extremely poorly very quickly and was diagnosed with a heart condition called Supra Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT) at Sheffield Children’s Hospital - her heart rate spiked to 256bpm.

PASSING through Worrall? Look out for the new red maple tree by the junction of Kirk Edge Road and Worrall Road. Amey staff moved the four-metre October Glory with its 50-litre of rootball into position on Tuesday morning watched by 15 members of the Worrall Environmental Group and Sheffield City and Bradfield Parish Councillor, Vickie Priestley. Amey’s Andrew Greenwood worked with the group in selecting the site just across the road from a 20-yearold oak planted by a member of that

group – that now stands at almost 10 metres tall. The autumn colours of these two trees will contrast for decades to come. The red leafed maple was chosen to give a poppy-like colour around the date of the Armistice commemorations. Some of those gathered will water the tree next spring twice a week with 20 litres of water from the nearby drinking troughs. This planting pushes the number of newly provided trees around Worrall close to the 2,000 mark.

Despite several attempts to lower her heart rate nothing was working. The doctors administered a drug to Molly. The first attempt failed but on the second dose it worked and stopped her heart. For a few moments she was clinically dead with the heart monitor stopping. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters A Bright future This week I attended the celebration evening at the Stocksbridge High School, along with a hall full of family and friends of the students. I had the pleasure of presenting certificates of education and other achievements to the students and former students of the school. It was reassuring to see so many of our town’s young people achieve so much. As the recipients of the GCSE certificates have now left the school, I thought it appropriate to write to Look Local to wish everyone I met a bright and successful future.

It would appear from the last two issues of Look Local that the Penistone and Stocksbridge CLP may have given the ‘leave’ constituents of Penistone and Stocksbridge a helping hand in the deselection of Angela Smith MP by initiating the vote of “no confidence” in her.

The writer refers nostalgically to the days of tolerance and comradeship, whilst ironically condemning as “cajoling and bullying” any attempt to get MPs and Constituency Party members to pull together as one voice in support of their duly elected leader whose overall popularity is recordbreaking.

If the letter sent in by KR (issue1037) showing the figures for the 2016 EU Referendum (61.3%) In our area voted to leave, surely our MP should be voting forthe Brexit agreement in Parliament on December 11.

The writer went on to list ten requirements of his choice, all of which describe Jeremy to a tee. Perhaps if your correspondent disagrees he will write in again with some detail to support his argument.

As for the comments by Mr Tivey in his letter (issue 1037) ‘Our MP’, I believe that the letter from KR negates a lot of his 10 points concerning Angela Smith and to look back on the closure of our Leisure Centre in Stocksbridge in particular as to whether she does work for all her constituents.

Friends of St Matthias have now arranged a meeting on December 17 at Stocksbridge Town Hall to update on progress. Support also came from Stocksbridge Town Council and the Women’s Institute. With, Inyerface Arts, a group that puts together arts and music for kids, Beacon Arts, who deliver arts, theatre and performance in the local community and Stocksbridge Music Festival, a focus will be on creating a high quality performance space.

The Stocksbridge Sustainable Energy Group, created after Stocksbridge Solar Futures Project (Universities of Durham and Sheffield), continue in the local community sustainable energy projects and wish to utilize St Matthias Church as a zero emission project – notably its big roof offering potential for solar panels.

DO you know someone who will be eating Christmas Dinner alone? Perhaps it’s you? The Meeting Place, a new initiative in Stocksbridge, has brought together over 20 volunteers from around the town to put on a full Christmas Dinner, with all the trimmings, as part of a ‘Christmas Day Together’ event at Christ church Community Hall. Welcome coffee and snacks from 10.30am, dinner around 1pm, tea and cake around 4pm. It could be just what you are looking for.

The Meeting Place team have been asking around to make sure that people who are facing Christmas Day alone will have the chance to share in a dinner in welcoming surroundings, with lots of other people. There will be about 50-60 people altogether, and there are a few places left. It’s designed for people under 65, because there is already an event which caters for people over 65. There is a small charge for the meal.

The Meeting Place team is taking referrals now. So if you know of someone who might want to come, please ring the Meeting Place Co-ordinator, Sarah, on 07800 923 192, or email her on sccoordinator@outlook.com , and she will follow up on your enquiry. Perhaps it’s someone on your street. Perhaps you might want to talk to them first? Sarah’s colleague, Carla, said: “Let’s try and make sure no-one has to eat alone on Christmas Day.”

Ladies battle to a point in entertaining match Loughborough Students 1-1 Oughtibridge WM Ladies A VERY depleted War Memorial Ladies rolled up their sleeves and dug out a hard earned point from their trip to the impressive Holywell Park Sports Complex. It could have been even better if they had held onto their 12th minute lead, Millie Kenyon producing some great wing play and a tight angle finish to match. Annie Longmore glanced a header just over from Maddie Bishop’s cross but the students are a dangerous team going forward and levelled on 35 minutes through Grace Stanley. Oughtibridge stayed disciplined in the second half and soaked up some pressure, Loughborough coming close when they hit the bar from a harshly awarded free kick. The ref became even

more unpopular when he let Loughborough play on with Jen Selman down with a head injury, fortunately Oughtibridge survived the scare thanks to some last ditch defending from Abby Towns and Chloe Rodgers. With the game into injury time Kenyon worked some left wing magic before crossing to Demi Mullen, holding off her marker to find Codi Melia steaming in to fire home only to be thwarted by a remarkable save from the home keeper. All in all, a fair result, with the defensive spine of the Oughtibridge team, Laura Watton, Milly Wilson, Grace Rodgers and keeper Coran Wright looking solid throughout. This Sunday Oughtibridge host much fancied Peterborough United at the War Memorial with a kick off of 2pm.

War Memorial go top Oughtibridge WMFC 3-2 Renshaw With only two games in the Blades Super Draw Premier, War Memorial went top when David Hudson’s side got the better of Renishaw Rangers by the odd goal in a five-goal thriller. A brilliant team move provided the game’s opening goal with Strachan Sampson the eventual beneficiary after great work by

Danny Booth and man of the match Matt Harrison.

lum Chambers who slotted the ball passed the visiting keeper.

James Savage levelled matters with a clinical finish from a tight angle. Oughtibridge had several great chances to go ahead but had to wait until the 60th minute when a superb curled effort from substitute Jordan Smith restored the home lead and that was extended to 3-1 when Sampson played in Cal-

Renishaw captain Lee Walker headed home his side’s second and Oughtibridge were indebted to keeper Chris Arnett who denied the away side a point when he saved a penalty in the closing minutes and also saved the follow up for equal measure.

corner 10 yards out was agonisingly close to the opener.

Photo: Ian Revitt THERE were home debuts for new signings for Ed Hall and Jordan Lemon as manager Chris Hilton shuffled his pack after the heavy defeat last week against Cleethorpes. Hall, the current number one for Yorkshire International, and Lemon, signed from Matlock Town, were be looking for an immediate impact. Visitors to Look Local stadium, Spalding United who, like Steels, were fighting for points at the wrong end of the table. After 10 minutes, Steels started to force their way into the game with some bright counter attacking play as Williams, Litchfield and Ruthven all testing the away keeper Michael Duggan with shots on goal - Ruthvens effort was cleared off the line by a Spalding defender and then McFadyen’s free header from a Litchfield

Steels were dominant now and should have been one up when Wiles fired on goal only for his effort to be cleared off the line too. Good play from Steels as Litchfield broke free in the box, his trickery leading to a clear penalty as he was tripped. Ruthven stepped up and shot hard to Duggan’s right where the height was just right for the keeper and although he had anticipated the shot well, Ruthven will be disappointed he didn’t score. Better from Steels as the away side was limited to only a few flurries forward offering very little in terms of effective attacking play. As half time approached the Steels boys will again reflect on missed opportunities but would be buoyed by a much improved performance so far. Ed Hall showed real class in his distribution with accurate long range passes to both Litchfield and Wil-

liams early on as Steels tried to keep up the positive momentum gained in the first half but it was Spalding who had reacted best in the opening 10 minutes of the second period. Leon Mettam’s free kick and snap shot were fired straight at Hall as the away side pressed forward with more intent. Good play by Williams and Litchfield gave Ruthven a terrific chance to open the scoring but he side footed straight at Duggan from 10 yards with only the keeper to beat. Litchfield then fired over the bar with a left footed drive. The game was opening up with both teams playing well. A terrific 25 yard volley from Scott Floyd was tipped onto the bar by Hall and then at the other end Duggan’s failure to collect a long straight ball into the box found Fielding winning the dual only for his brave header to loop over Duggan creeping the wrong side of the post.

On 78 minutes Steels deservedly went ahead through Litchfield. Williams headed the ball into the path of the in form striker who had lost his markers in the Spalding last third, he calmly slotted the ball right footed over the advancing Duggan into the net. With Steels looking comfortable they seemed well on course for the three points but Spalding found energy and drive in the last five minutes causing a few nervy moments for the Steels defence. It was a whipped in left footed corner that unlocked the Steels rear guard as Conor Marshal lost his marker three yards out and latched onto the ball, firing in at the far post giving Hall no chance. It was a cruel blow for the home side as Spalding no doubt travelled back down the A1 feeling a tad lucky to have a point under their belts. Positive signs for Steels. Next up its Gresley FC on Saturday December 15 with a 3pm kick off.

STEELS DEVELOPMENT SIDE KNOCK RESERVES OUT OF CUP Stocksbridge PS Development 2-1 Stocksbridge PS Reserves STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels’ development and reserves were drawn together in the third round of the County Senior League Cup and it was the development squad who came away with the bragging rights. The reserves took the lead when a good ball into the box was calmly finished by Lewis Whitham, however instead of pushing on the reserves sat back and thought the job was done which was far

from the truth and the development squad should have equalised after fine work from Cleote and a good ball into the box failed to find a finish.

ter passing and the reserves starting to threaten once again with Townsend and Whitham going close.

The equaliser came with a good strike from Kirk from the edge of the box past Ratcliffe - this resulted in a 10-minute spell of pressure from the development squad who were now fired up.

The game looked to be heading for extra time when a rush of blood from veteran keeper Ratcliffe, who was playing for the suspended Bond, came outside his box to clear but hit the ball against his own defender to leave Cleote with an empty goal to score the winner.

Kerry replaced Grayson for the reserves and this brought a bit of calmness to the midfield with bet-

No excuses as Church are second best PENISTONE Church lost 4-1 to Staveley Miners’ Welfare in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division at the weekend with manager Ian Richards making no excuses. Ryan Johnson got the consolation for Church with a Joe Pugh brace and goals from Thomas Poole and Robson Doolan giving Staveley the win. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “Credit to Staveley today, they were the better team and the better team won. The score didn’t flatter them, they deserved to win by three goals. “I like Staveley as a football club, I have respect for the Staveley management team and I like Staveley as a football team on the grass. “They deserved that it just wasn’t our day, we were second best and we just have to hold our hands up and we have to accept responsibility.”

Ossett Rugby 27-24 Stocksbridge Rugby STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby lost to unbeaten league leaders by just three points on Saturday and are about to make a fantastic signing. The Pigs produced a stirring second half performance against Ossett at the weekend and were unlucky to go down with the home side hanging on for the final whistle. Whilst never be happy with any defeat, head coach Rhys Keenan and his team will take a lot of positives from the performance, & look for similar displays in the coming weeks.
