TRAMLINES AT HILLSBOROUGH HAILED A SUCCESS
MORE than 100,000 people descended on Hillsborough Park and Sheffield city centre to party in the sunshine on the 10th year of the celebrated Tramlines music festival. The festival moved to its new, bigger location of Hillsborough Park this year, which gave the opportunity for four stages to play host to a line-up of acclaimed international acts, including Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David’s TS5, alongside Jake Bugg, Nina Nesbitt and Mabel. Exciting entertainment was also on offer at Devonshire Green, Barker’s Pool and the Peace Gardens as The Fringe at Tramlines provided free films, comedy and music that created a buzz across the city centre. Created by the combined forces of Tramlines, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield BID, The Fringe at Tramlines attracted 70,000 people, enjoying the free music stage, open-air cinema and
street theatre activities over the two-day event. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: "The Fringe at Tramlines brought tens of thousands of people into the city centre to enjoy music, film and performance. BID investment supports events that drive cultural and economic growth for the benefit of our local businesses. “It was fantastic to see Sheffield city centre busy, vibrant and taking on a festival feel for Tramlines weekend. Through the addition of a complimentary programme of city centre fringe events, this investment has helped drive visitor numbers and spend whilst enhancing the city’s distinctiveness and external profile." With the main festival moving to Hillsborough Park Tramlines were keen to keep some roots in the city centre where the festival started ten years before, by supporting an official fringe festival. Alex Deadman, Tramlines Festival and The
Fringe at Tramlines, said: “I'm delighted that Tramlines Festival were able to work with Sheffield City Council and Sheffield BID leading to the creation of an official event, 'The Fringe at Tramlines'. “The unique atmosphere created over the Tramlines weekend is reliant on both the ticketed event at Hillsborough Park and the vibrancy of the city centre. I hope that we now have a model that can be used well into the future.” The huge success of Tramlines festival was clearly evident with early bird tickets for the 2019 festival selling out within minutes after release last week. In 2019 the festival takes place on 19-21 July, tickets are on-sale now at www.tramlines.org.uk/. The Fringe at Tramlines will be back in the city centre on the same weekend, keep an eye out on the Sheffield Events Facebook page for announcements and updates.

YORKSHIRE DAY A HIT IN HIGH GREEN A YORKSHIRE Day event, organised by the High Green Health Network, took place on Sunday. The event, which had had to be moved due the refurbishment work at the Miners Welfare Hall, took place at St Mary’s Church Hall in High Green.
Mary Birch reads the Yorkshire Oath
There were over 140 people in attendance for the day, which included a brass band, tables and demonstrations by local groups, for a celebration of all things Yorkshire in High Green.
Pictured are ladies from the local history groups, wearing clothes to commemorate the centenary of voting rights for women, with Mary Birch reading the Yorkshire Oath. The winning ticket for the entry raffle was white 108, please get in touch with Schani Cave on 0114 213 4065 if that was you. Support for the event was given through funding by People Keeping Well and Ecclesfield Parish Council.
‘DEATH’ SMELL DRAWS COMPLAINTS AN animal rendering plant in Cubley has drawn complaints from local residents who have complained about the foul smell emanating from the premises.
The smell from Bella Vista Farm has long been a bone of contempt for locals but they say the recent spell of hot weather has made it even worse. The JG Pears-owned plant takes in dead animals and other animal waste for processing and they say that the service is vital.
However, such has been the volume of complaints that Barnsley Council are going to carry out an investigation. One resident described the smell as “horrendous” and says that it is “causing flies and maggots,” as well as making children sick. “It smells like rotten eggs, like chickens rotting. It smells like bodies rotting really, it smells like death,” she continued.

ways a small risk of developing blood clots after injuries of this nature.
Andrea Hicks, who was 48, broke her ankle after slipping on Langsett Road, not far from her home back in January.
It was found that she had developed a blood clot on her lung due to her inactivity whilst she recuperated.
David Urpeth, coroner, said: “I’ve heard clear evidence that the treatment provided following the ankle fracture was appropriate and in line with what other patients who have sustained this injury have received. Sadly there’s a risk of thromboembolus following fractures which is well recognised. That being said, Ms Hicks died at a very young age and that’s a tragedy for her as well as all her family she leaves behind.
At an inquest into her death, it was reported that there was al-
A conclusion of accidental death was recorded.
After receiving hospital treatment, Andrea was at home recovering from her injury when she was found dead just two weeks later on February 1.
Carolyn Chadwick, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: “We see hundreds and hundreds of patients with ankle fractures in the same situation, most of whom won’t be given an anticoagulant, although some will be. We’ve known people to be on anticoagulants and for this sad outcome to still be the case. “Despite much large scale research looking into the incidence no one knows when anticoagulants should be given, or how much to take and for how long. It’s still very much up to an individual decision on a caseby-case basis.”
AWARDS CEREMONY AMENDMENT
IN last week’s Look Local, we reported on an awards ceremony at High Green Primary School.
We reported that one of the awards was ‘person most likely to forget primary school’. It was in fact titled ‘The most likely to forget everything he has learned in school’. We wish to apologise for this error. The parent of the pupil involved has asked us to make it clear that school have apologised for the upset and are sending a replacement award to make him feel better about things.
JG Pears say that the site is essential to local farmers. Paul Beaumont, from JG Pears, says that while they take their environmental responsibilities extremely seriously, the hot weather was to blame for the rise in complaints.
“Our operatives strive to ensure day-to-day activities do not adversely impact our neighbours and the local environment, especially with respect to the current extreme weather conditions.
“As a highly-reputable family business and local employer, we work very closely with the appropriate local authorities in reviewing our operations.” As part of the investigation, Barnsley Council has asked residents to keep diaries and to contact the council when the odour is at its worst. The authority said it had worked with JG Pears to control odour since an abatement notice was served in 2013 under the Environmental Protection Act.

This year's event is part of DCRT’s Heritage Lottery funded Living Heritage of the River Don project. ‘Bio’ means ‘life’ and ‘Blitz’ means ‘to do something quickly and intensively’. It contains areas of woodland and heath land as well as sitting on the banks of the wonderful River Don. “We’re thrilled that the Don Catchment Rivers Trust have chosen Wardsend for this BioBlitz and are looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to what we know will be a great day.” Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this free event - potentially sparking an interest, or furthering one in natural history. SOUTH Yorkshire fire cadets, including some trained in Stocksbridge, have been honoured at a ceremony in Sheffield to mark their achievements. More than 20 cadets, aged 13 to 17, were recognised in front of friends and family at the event at the fire service’s Handsworth training base, for successfully completing their Level 1 and Level 2 BTEC in Teamwork and Personal skills in a Uniform Organisation. programme handed out at last week’s event.
Cadets train at their respective stations once a week, learning firefighting skills and techniques from specially qualified instructors. They also play a key role at community events and take part in team-building days throughout the year.
Station manager Matt Gillatt, said: “Our fire cadets scheme has a long and proud history. Over the years the scheme has evolved to provide a much more rounded mixture of skills and training, including community work and exercises to build personal confidence and employment skills.
Cadets enrol on to the CVQO education package, which covers the employability skills needed to work within the health and emergency services. The young people had 12months to work towards a recognised qualification, with certificates for successful completion of the
“South Yorkshire has one of the most successful fire cadet schemes in the country, so it is right that we recognise the achievements of our youngsters in this way.”

STOCKSBRIDGE RENEWS FAIRTRADE STATUS STOCKSBRIDGE has successfully renewed Fairtrade Town status for two years, following its ongoing commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles. Stocksbridge Fairtrade Group celebrated the achievement by presenting the certificate to Councillor Julie Grocutt, Mayor of Stocksbridge, at The Town Council meeting on July 12. The Stocksbridge Fairtrade Steering Group revealed its plans to promote Fairtrade to more community groups and businesses in the area by taking part in campaigns, including the UK-wide Fairtrade Fortnight at the end of February. The group have said they will continue to be present at as many community events as possible throughout the year. Stocksbridge was first awarded the Fairtrade status in 2015 in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the town, and the achievement of five qualifying goals, such as a wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from local people, businesses, the council, faith groups and schools.
Cllr Julie Grocutt, Mayor Stocksbridge, is handed the certificate
Margaret Derbyshire, chair of the steering group, commented: “We could not have achieved this status without the continued
support of The Town Council and the people of Stocksbridge.” Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “We’re very pleased that Stocksbridge has renewed their Fairtrade status and laid out clear exciting goals to take Fairtrade further. “Thanks to the ongoing support of the public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.” Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers ensure they earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies. In addition, they earn the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest as the farmer-owned co-operative democratically chooses, in projects that will benefit their business or community. The Fairtrade Mark independently certifies that products meet economic, social and environmental standards. As such, it is the most widely recognised ethical mark worldwide. For more information about the Fairtrade Mark and how to apply for Fairtrade status, visit www.fairtrade.org.uk.
More than 60 people prosecuted for falsely using blue badges MORE than 60 people have now been successfully prosecuted for using someone else’s blue badge to park for free in Sheffield – with fines totally around £30,000. In the latest three prosecutions, a further 15 people have been fined £5,575 – an average of more than £450 per fine. The blue badge is confiscated upon successful prosecution with no guarantee that it can be re-applied for, meaning that the badge holder and potentially their families are left out of
pocket and inconvenienced by the actions. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council, said: “Using a blue badge in this way is an abhorrent way to secure free parking, no matter what the excuse. People who wrongly use these spaces are denying people with a genuine need the opportunity to do so. “These prosecutions don’t just end with a fine but with the confiscation of a badge as well – which has been genuinely awarded in the first place. So, my
message is – don’t be tempted to use a relative or friends’ badge no matter what the circumstances. You will be fined and your friend or relative will lose the advantages that come with having a badge. “The improper use of blue badges has a major impact on people who actually do have disabilities, causing parking problems and discrediting the whole scheme. “Nobody else can use the blue badge unless they are travelling with the owner. My team won’t hesitate to continue confiscating blue
badge passes where they are abused.” In the cases the council has prosecuted so far, more than 98 per cent of the blue badges have been withdrawn. There’s a full list of blue badge regulations available at www.sheffield. gov.uk/home/parking/ blue-badge or by calling 0114 2734567. There are currently more than 24,000 blue badges in circulation within Sheffield – 225 of these belong to organisations and the remainder are individual badges.

Special thanks go to Toby Fletcher at Crown Cars, Sheffield Libraries and Lesley and the staff at Stocksbridge Library for allowing us to site the defibrillators outside their premises, and South Yorkshire Police who have agreed to site the third one outside Deepcar Police Station. Defibrillators are easy to use, just follow the instructions on the cabinet and the machine will ‘talk ‘ you through how to use it in an emergency situation. If you dial 999 you will be told where the nearest defibrillator is sited which will save valuable time.

Thank you for standing by the people of Haiti in their hour of need. You are helping to build houses strong enough to withstand the power of hurricanes. Together, we’re stronger than the storms.

Although not as big an operation as it once was, the steelworks still produce top quality steel and the workers take a great deal of pride in that. The loss of much of the industry has led to the identity of Stocksbridge having to change and this has been addressed with the Fox Valley retail park.
But by far the most important aspect of Stocksbridge is the sense of community spirit felt among those who live here – whether born and bred or recently movedin.

FOUR of the region’s biggest football teams are hoping to secure a place in the sporting history books in a few days time. Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United are set to compete in the fourth year of the now annual Youdan Trophy. They will play top international clubs like the Seattle Sounders – the cup holders for the past two years running – Oman’s Al Habsi and Canada’s ANB Futbol. Teams have been hand-picked to play in the tournament with many flying thousands of miles to compete in Sheffield, the home of football. The Youdan Trophy takes its name from the man behind the game’s first interclub tournament that was played just once at Bramall Lane in 1867.
The Football Challenge Cup was sponsored by legendary local entrepreneur Thomas Youdan and won by Hallam FC. Other teams set to compete next week include Wolves and Charlton Athletic. The Youdan Trophy was started four years ago as a way of providing up-and-coming referees with top level match experience. Youdan Trophy tournament director Jock Waugh said: “These teams have the pick of tournaments anywhere on the planet but they increasingly choose the Youdan Trophy here in Sheffield – it’s a great honour to know we’re becoming the place to see the game’s stars of the future.” The Youdan Trophy is a unique showcase of the game’s very best new talent via its under 16s and under 14s competition. The tournament attracts scouts from some of the world’s top clubs.
Top class refereeing is an integral part of the event. Mark Clattenburg – who officiated the UEFA Euro 2016 final – was a referee in 2017. Referees will be arriving in Sheffield from around the globe. Youdan Trophy 2018 is staged from August 3rd until August 6th at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park. Spectators are welcome at all games. You can also follow the Youdan Trophy on Twitter (@YoudanTrophy), Instagram (@YoudanTrophy) and Facebook (@ YoudanTrophy). The Youdan Trophy is sponsored by IPro Sport. The organisation also runs grassroots/development tournaments and tours. More information from www. youdantrophy.com

Norman, 83, reaches Parkrun landmark NORMAN Cole, aged 83, of Penistone Footpath Runners celebrated his 250th Parkrun at Barnsley at the weekend.
Joined by his family and running friends, he was presented with a commemorative plaque by Steve Lavender, to mark the occasion. Norman, who was diagnosed with cancer late last year, completed the 250th run after a short break whilst receiving 18 weeks of treatment. Norman thanked all the Parkrunners for their support and the standing ovation he received running into the finish. It’s been a congested racing week for Penistone Footpath Runners with many runners taking part in races across Yorkshire. James Thompson broke his own senior make club record at the Doncaster 5k with an impressive 15-53. Gareth Cook also broke the old record recording a PB time of 16-07. 27 Penistone runners undertook the Hud-
dersfield 5km which formed part of the club’s championship competition. On the night two 5km club records were broken - the ladies senior record by Ashleigh Bowskill in 23-12 and the ladies V35 by Laura Gill in 20-33. The Penistone teams fared well with the ladies team (Laura Gill, Julia Cobham, Ashleigh Bowskill) picking up second place and the men’s team (Kieron Reed, Rob Lees, Martin Ball) placing third. The race also represented the Yorkshire veterans 5k championships and there were many Penistone runners in the medals. A few hardy runners from Penistone made the short trip over the Strines to run in the Bamford Carnival Fell Race. First male back for the club was Mark Riordan in 53rd place in a time of 38-10. First lady back for Penistone was Julie Darigala in 40-24. Julie was an impressive fourth lady back overall and second FV40.

Boss admits Tigers loss is low point SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead described Thursday’s 52-38 home loss to Lakeside as the most disappointing result of his managerial career. In a rare Owlerton defeat, the Tigers threw away a ten-point lead in what can only be described as a total collapse for the steel city side. Despite a heavy downpour just before start time, Sheffield looked in control with six races gone.
But the Hammers began to get the better of the hosts away from the tapes with gating imperative and the visitors registered eight heat advantages in the final nine races. “First and foremost all I can do right now is apologise to our fans who paid good money to come and watch us tonight,” Stead said.
“It wasn’t good enough and if I’m being honest I think they were more up for it than we were.
“We held a ten point lead at one point and still lost by 14 and that’s just an embarrassment.
“Yes track conditions weren’t ideal, but I’m not accepting that as an excuse for that kind of performance.
“That’s the most disappointing result of my managerial career so far and I hope the team go home and have a good, long, hard look at themselves because that makes tomorrow’s meeting even more important.”
“People will say the rain suited the away team more and it was a leveller but we should still be good enough on our home track to beat anybody here at Owlerton.
The Tigers travel to rivals Scunthorpe on Friday (July 27, 7.30) - a full meeting
preview will be issued on the morning of the fixture. SHEFFIELD 38: Kyle Howarth 10, Charles Wright 9, Lasse Bjerre 6+1, James Shanes 6+1, Todd Kurtz 3+1, Broc Nicol 3+1, Georgie Wood 1+1. LAKESIDE: 52: Adam Ellis 13+2, Richard Lawson 11, Nick Morris 8+3, Ben Morley 6, Kyle Newman 5, Zach Wajtknecht 5, Alfie Bowtell 4.

Church lift Purdie Cup After the game, Church manager Ian Richards said: “I’m obviously pleased with the result tonight, everybody wants to win every game they play in and where there’s a cup at the end of it it’s really nice to see your captain lift that cup but we must remember its part of the bigger picture.
IT was Penistone Church who came out on top as they clashed with Stocksbridge Park Steels in the annual Purdie Cup. Second half goals from Sam Scrivens and Ash Ellis steered Church to a 2-0 win against their higher-league rivals. A crowd of 219 turned out to watch the game unfold and the deadlock was broken on 55 minutes through Scrivens and Ellis doubled the lead just six minutes later.
Andy Ring, who now plays for Church, was formerly a Park Steel

out August but it’s nice to win against your local Evo-stick neighbours and it was really pleasing the way we did it with some good individual displays and a good team performance. “A lot of credit should go to Penistone and Stocksbridge club officials Dave Hampshire and Mick Grimmer who revived this charity cup competition.”

“It’s nice that we got the win but that’s not the main thing in preseason there’s a lot more positives than that we have to enjoy these positives and move on to Saturday.” Stocksbridge Park Steels manager Chris Hilton says he wants to bring two more players in yet with his new team still finding their feet. Park Steels face a Sheffield Wednesday XI on Saturday August 4 with a 3pm kick off.
