FORMER Sheffield Hallam MP, Sir Nick Clegg, has had a talk at a university cancelled due to security concerns. The former Liberal Democrat leader was due to appear at the

University of Sheffield on Thursday October 18. The event, hosted by Sheffield Young Liberals Society, was to feature a question and answer session the former deputy Prime Minister. Community celebrates 30 years of the Steel Valley Project STOCKSBRIDGE countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, held a sponsored walk on Saturday October 6, bringing together the local community to celebrate their 30-year anniversary. Members of the public joined staff and volunteers on a walk which included many of the sites where the charity’s projects have taken place over the years. With the choice of a 12-mile or six-mile route, the walkers climbed out of Stocksbridge to meander over Whitwell Moor and enjoy views across Strines before stopping for a celebratory buffet lunch in the historic village of Bolsterstone. The longer route then visited Wharncliffe Heath and returned back along the newly finished Little Don Link, climbing up to the Steel Valley Walk to take in the views above Stocksbridge

before making the final descent back. A total of ÂŁ943 has been raised so far through sponsorship and entry fees, which will go towards helping to deliver future projects to improve the local environment. Speaking on behalf of the charity, Project Manager Tom Newman said: “We would like to thank everyone who participated in the walk and raised funds for the Steel Valley Project, along with the local businesses who have generously donated money.â€? He added that the walk had been “a great opportunity to showcase the work of the charity over the last 30 years and give local people the chance to visit lots of our project sites.â€? The Steel Valley Project now works with a variety of different partners, but has continued to develop long term relationships with founding partners Stocksbridge Steel-

works (now Liberty Speciality Steels), Stocksbridge Town Council and Sheffield City Council. Liberty Speciality Steels, kindly provided the parking facilities and event HQ for the walk whilst Stocksbridge Town Council donated funding for a commemorative 30-year metal water bottle which all participants on the walk received. Special thanks must also go to Dark Peak Fell Runners, based in Sheffield, who held the ‘Royal International Dungworth Fell Race’ on the same day and donated all their entry fees from the event to the Steel Valley Project’s current crowdfunding appeal to replace a stolen strimmer. Members of the public can still donate to this appeal via the Steel Valley Project website at www.steelvalleyproject.org

GRENOSIDE SCOUTS PART OF NATIONAL INSTALLATION

GRENOSIDE Scout and Guide Group are celebrating the award of two ‘There but not there’ silhouettes funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. The silhouettes will form part of a national installation and will be on display at their forthcoming fundraising events, the Bonfire and Christmas Fair and also in Church on Remembrance Sunday. The award was made under the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember, and to think about the Armed Forces today.

As a group, Grenoside Scouts and Guides are committed to remembering those who lost their lives in all conflicts. The silhouettes will represent a person who would have been part of their group, had a past family member not lost their life.

special guest appearance and welcoming children into his grotto.

The first public event that the silhouettes will be on display at will be their Bonfire and Firework display on Saturday November 3.

The Group are having a busy few months of fundraising. Their jumble sale in September was very well attended and raised a record breaking amount of just over £600. They would like to thank all the helpers, everyone who donated items and everyone who came along and bought some of the many great bargains.

Tickets for this are available online at https://bit.ly/grenoscouts. Their final fundraiser of the year is their Christmas Fair on Saturday November 24 at 10.30am, when Santa will be making a

Due to its popularity, they have panned another jumble sale for Saturday March 23 next year. This was followed on October 6 with their sell-out Oktoberfest Party.

The Group are fundraising to make improvements to their headquarters. The children have been involved over the Summer working alongside the Royal Horticultural Society, on a pilot youth project working on improving the outside area. They have been involved in designing the area, giving input and ideas on what they would like to see, clearing the area and planting. All this is giving them life skills, knowledge and a sense of ownership of the area, as well as working towards a number of badges. Work is due to start over the winter on the planned extension to the headquar-

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

Bracken Bashing on Wharncliffe Heathlands BRACKEN will be the target for two work parties over successive weekends on Wharncliffe Heathland Nature Reserve starting on Sunday October 28. Bracken spreads underground and can quickly smother other vegetation if left to its own devices. The management plan for the heathland reserve aims to reduce the area occupied by bracken using two approaches. First, hu-

mans bashing the dead bracken and raking it off followed by the introduction of cattle to trampling new growth as it emerges. To ensure the cattle do their part, salt licks and plant rich hay is used to keep them in the right area. Seed from the hay helps establish grassland where the bracken used to dominate. The new grassland is more attractive for wildlife than the dense bracken.

After years of bashing, there is a growing area of woodland pasture that has added to the diversity of the reserve Local volunteers are invited to join bracken bashing work parties on Saturday October 28 and Saturday November 3. The latter will include Sheffield University Conservation Volunteers. Both work days will start at 11am. Meet at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar (map reference SK

291 980/postcode S36 2SQ). Wear stout footwear and bring warm clothes and some lunch. Under 19s are welcome but will need to be accompanied by an adult. The work days will be finished by 4pm. POLICE ISSUE ADVICE FOLLOWING THEFTS FROM CARS FOLLOWING recent theft from motor vehicles in the north of Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police Designing Out Crime Officer Dene Tinker offers the following advice. • Always lock and double lock your car doors. • Don’t leave anything on show or anything of value in the glove compartment

• If possible leave the glove box open so the offenders can see that there’s nothing of value to steal. Keyless car thefts - once a car has been targeted, two criminals work together using electronic signal relay devices to steal the vehicle, normally from outside the owner’s home.

How to avoid being a victim of keyless car theft: • Contact your dealer and talk about the digital features in your car. Have there been any software updates you can take advantage of? • Check if your keyless entry fob can be turned off. If it can, and your dealer can also confirm this, then do so overnight.

• Store your keys away from household entry points. Keeping your keyless entry fob out of sight is not enough – thieves only need to gain proximity to the key to amplify the signal. • Although the relay device signal can pass through doors, walls and windows, it cannot penetrate metal, so storing your keys inside a metal container or a signal blocking wallet can

safeguard your vehicle against an attack.

age to the key and is unlikely to be effective.

• Faraday pouches can be purchased online and in stores, these will prevent your signal being intercepted and your vehicle stolen.

• Review your car security. Check for after-market security devices such as steering locks or trackers, which are proven to deter thieves.

• Despite social media or public opinion, I would advise NOT to leave keys in the fridge or microwave as this may do more dam-

• Be vigilant. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your neighbourhood – andreport anything unusual to the Police.

Freeview upgrades Sheffield Street to Freeview Play Freeview brings the Free Love to Freedom Road, Sheffield

Residents of Freedom Road have been celebrating after receiving brand new Freeview Play TVs which could save them up to £400 a year. To celebrate Freeview’s new TV ad campaign, “Join the Free Love Freeway”, Freeview decided to kit out the aptly named road with new sets, offering residents on the street a brand new Freeview Play TV in partnership with Sheffield-based TV & appliance retailer Crampton and Moore. To mark the occasion, Freeview hosted a street party, complete with a marching brass band, face painting and film crew. The residents of Freedom Road are among the many viewers making the switch to the subscription free TV platform. Freeview has grown its viewer base faster than any other major TV platform since 2016, making it the most widely watched in the UK . Research conducted by Freeview shows that over half of Brits (53%) are open to switching from a paid-for TV subscription service to a free option, letting them gain access to 95% of the nation’s most watched TV shows without a monthly bill. Resident Ben Drury of Freedom Road said: “I’ve been spending £65 per month on my TV service, but all of my favourite shows were available for free on Freeview Play. There was no reason not to switch, and it was

Call 0114 283 11 00

so easy – I’m saving money and still getting to watch the shows I love. I just wish I’d realised sooner.” John Craske, Freeview, said “We’re so confident in the programming, functionality and flexibility that Freeview Play offers we were prepared to put our money where our mouth is, giving a whole street the chance to upgrade to a Freeview Play TV. We wanted to make this a nationwide opportunity but our Finance Director just wouldn’t allow it”. With Freeview Play, viewers can watch a massive variety of programmes with easy access to both live and on demand TV, and most devices have access to top up with streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It has never been easier to become a Freeview Play viewer, with the service built into nearly all new TV models, and if you have an older TV – Freeview Play boxes start at £70. Scott Molloy manager of Crampton and Moore Sheffield branch, said “It was great to be involved with the Freeview Play event as we’re a local family run business and like helping out in the community. We loved showing the residents of Freedom Road everything that Freeview Play has to offer – and delivering a TV with confetti and a brass band accompaniment is always fun!”

Your Letters In Bloom

I refer to my article in last week’s Look Local regarding an anonymous letter.

Martin Davis (ex Mayor of Stocksbridge and ex City councillor).

October snow

Some readers may have incorrectly assumed that the persons mentioned in that anonymous letter Dear Editor, were local people. This is absolutely incorrect, the persons mentioned do not live in Stocksbridge or Deepcar or for that matter in the Look local circulation area and they have never stood as a Stocksbridge town Councillor or represented Stocksbridge and Upper Don at City Council level.

Whilst the current Indian summer we are experiencing is most welcome, I nevertheless wonder if we may be being lulled into a false sense of security; for the following report appearing in the October 30 1926 edition of the Penistone Express (p12) concerning the Stocksbridge area I can understand that this has caused distress and relates: “SNOW STORM: Severe weather has discomfort for our local past councillors and for been experienced in the Stocksbridge district during the week and on Sunday evening there that I most sincerely apologise. was a snow storm. South Yorkshire village could be England’s favourite conservation area ELSECAR, a small industrial village in the heart of South Yorkshire, has been shortlisted for the title ‘England’s favourite conservation area’; one of only 18 to be selected from nearly 250 nominations across the country. The award, by national charity Civic Voice, aims to showcase the UK’s best-loved historic places and the local communities that help to make them so special. Elsecar beat of stiff competition to be nominated for the public vote and is the only conservation area in South Yorkshire to make it through to the final selection. Elsecar is known and loved by many people across Barnsley for its historic buildings and green spaces. Yet, it is only recently that the true extent of its role in England’s industrial story has started to be understood. Elsecar was developed as a model industrial village for the Earls

Fitzwilliam of nearby Wentworth Woodhouse from the 1790s. It was the forerunner to model industrial villages like Saltaire and much of its original planned design still survives. The village includes many beautiful buildings, including workers houses, school, church, pubs, a Georgian canal and colliery workshops (now the Elsecar Heritage Centre). Designated as a conservation area in 1974, Elsecar has seen many of its historic buildings and green spaces carefully restored, with support from Barnsley Council, the local community and many other partners. It has recently been designated a Heritage Action Zone and a Great Place (along with nearby Wentworth) in recognition of its unique and important heritage. Matt Gladstone, Executive Director for Place at Barnsley Council, said: “We’re delighted that Elsecar has been shortlisted as one of

England’s favourite conservation areas. We are very proud of our heritage and our local communities which make this area so unique. I urge the residents of Barnsley and South Yorkshire to vote and help give Elsecar the national recognition it deserves.” Tegwen Roberts, Elsecar Heritage Action Zone officer with Barnsley Museums, said: “There is so much to love about Elsecar. Most people outside of South Yorkshire have never heard of it, but it has an incredible history. As a conservation area, it is particularly important as almost every aspect of its original planned design survives, including beautiful historic buildings and green spaces. It also has an amazing community spirit, which gives it a real sense of place.” The winner of the public vote will be announced at the annual Civic Voice conference on Friday October 19.

Halloween & Bonfire Feature

Halloween & Bonfire Feature THE largest firework display in north Sheffield and Sheffield’s second largest will again take place at the Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club on waterside Gardens. This year, top cover band the Replays, who played at this summers festival at the venue, will support a spectacular show set to music, by one of the country’s top display companies Pyrovision. Ian Sanderson, chairman of the sports club, said: “We are delighted to put on such a big professional show, complete with live band, funfair, bars and great food, which many tell us is one of the highlights of the local calendar. It takes a lot of organi-

sation and cost, but we think it’s well worth the effort.” Max Webb, director of Pyrovision, said: “Pyrovision have worked at many prestigious locations and venues both globally and across the UK. Many of these venues are of National and Historical interest, including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, the London Eye, the River Thames, Plymouth Citadel and Edinburgh Castle. “We are often invited to showcase our pyro-musical expertise at international festival events and competitions as far flung as China, Japan, Canada and, more locally, Monaco.

“This year we have designed the display around a tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the RAF, particularly relevant to the War Memorial club. “The music for this years event has also been chosen to fit this theme. As you can imagine we will be bringing the sky to life in reds, white and blues to represent the colours of our nation.” Buying tickets in advance is strongly advised, and they can be online at OWMSC.co.uk or from Oughtibridge Kitchens on Langsette Rd in Oughtibridge.

Singing train conductor to perform home town gig in Stocksbridge YORKSHIRE’S singing train conductor is to perform in his home town of Stocksbridge as part of debut album tour. Paul Mirfin, better known as Yorkshire’s singing train conductor, started writing songs three years ago and has now released his debut album as well as touring with his band to California and UK festivals. Few bands have been met with such a warm reception in their first year of playing together and the new line up for this album including Paul’s brother Ben (drums), Warren Timmis (guitar), Mark Boyle (banjo)

and John Evamy (violin) have already been featured as track of the week on BBC Introducing, Songs of Praise, Premier Radio and TBN as well as playing to sell out venues at Harrogate Royal Hall and Joshua Fest in California. The band have a unique folk rock sound combining references to Mumford & Sons in the musical arrangements with the influence of rock legends such as Johnny Cash. Paul’s gravelly tones and poetic lyrics allude to childhood years growing up in the steel town of Stocksbridge and his life as a railway worker and father.

The band have an amazing range of songs from upbeat hoedowns to stunning ballads such as ‘All I Want to Be’, a beautifully tender lullaby written by Paul for his daughter. The Paul Mirfin Band will be performing at Christ Church Stocksbridge on Thursday October 18 at 7pm. Entry is free, and refreshments will be available. Any donations towards refreshments will go towards the work of The Meeting Place Social Café which is based at Christ Church Stocksbridge, helping to reduce isolation and loneliness in the Stocksbridge area.

Archives on Tour - Local government in Hoylandswaine IMPORTANT historic records relating to the former Hoylandswaine Urban District Council have been carefully sorted, preserved and catalogued by Barnsley Archives and Local Studies team.

documents for the very first time. They include rate books (lists of residents who paid a rate to the council), plans for new buildings, a census of children in the district from 1877 and various posters.

The new records will be showcased for the very first time at a special event on Wednesday October 17. The event, which will be held in Hoylandswaine Village Hall between 10am and 1pm, will allow people to see the fascinating

The surviving records provide a unique insight into the rural nature of the Hoylandswaine district, which reached out from the centre of the village as far as Cat Hill, Wellhouse Lane near Penistone and Hill Top. The oldest records in the

collection detailing local government date back to 1847 and move through to the formation of Hoylandswaine Local Board in 1869, the change to Hoylandswaine Urban District Council in 1896 and finally to its merger with Penistone Urban District Council in 1938. The area became part of Barnsley Council in 1974. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Our previous Archives on Tour events were hugely successful

and provided residents with a unique opportunity to see historic documents up close. On Wednesday October 17 residents with an interest in local history will once again be able to study a selection of unique documents and discover what village life was like during the 19th and 20th centuries. “For anyone unable to attend the event, the newly catalogued collection can be found in the Experience Barnsley Discovery Centre located in the Town

Hall. Open Monday to Friday, with late night opening on Tuesday it’s the perfect place for anyone looking to uncover their family history and explore the Barnsley Film and Sound archive.” To find out more about the exhibition visit www.experience-barnsley.com or to view the online catalogue visit www. explorebarnsleycollections.com

Hillsborough Feature

TAKE A STROLL THROUGH HILLSBOROUGH

This week, we take a walk through Hillsborough - full of history and quirky features.

Hillsborough has faced some adversity in its journey to being the hub of activity that it is now.

It has one of the country’s top dog racing tracks, a casino, a leisure centre and a football ground – home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

The Great Sheffield Flood caused much devastation in Sheffield and approximately 42 people were killed in the Hillsborough area alone. It was also host to a terrible football disaster which is still a widely-debated subject now.

Fans of architecture will find a few treasures too, such as the red brick church and the former Victorian swimming baths that is now a pub. But what we’re featuring here are the businesses that trade in the Hillsborough area. A hotspot for shoppers, Hillsborough has a wide selection of shops and businesses with easy transport links to the city centre and other areas of Sheffield. It lies at the point where the River Loxley and the River Rivelin flow into the River Don, making for a thriving place to visit full of history.

With the success of the steel and engineering industries in Sheffield, the area began to recover as there was an increased demand for suburban housing. The arrival of the tram in 1903 was a big boost to the development of the suburb; it initially ran as far as the top of Parkside Road before extending to Middlewood in 1913. House building continued until around 1909 when most of present day Hillsborough’s road infrastructure had been created.

The name of the suburb comes from Hillsborough House built and named in 1779 in tribute to the Earl of Hillsborough who lived in Hillsborough, County Down. For 124 years the house was a private dwelling, but since 1906 it has housed the Hillsborough branch library.

Hillsborough made history after a deal made last year, when the Bassets factory became the first place in England to manufacture the world-famous biscuit Oreo, adding to the list of global brands already being produced in Sheffield. It’s also plays host to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, one of the oldest professional clubs in the world and the third oldest in the English league. The team have played their home games at the Hillsborough Stadium, previously named Owlerton, since 1899.

The centre of Hillsborough is known as Hillsborough corner, where Langsett Road, Middlewood Road, Holme Lane and Bradfield Road all meet.

Here is where shoppers can find a wide selection of independent businesses in the heart of Hillsborough. The place continues to thrive with amenities such as butchers, florists, and many family run businesses in addition to its selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. The shopping centre, Hillsborough Exchange, sits on Middlewood Road and features an array of shops to make for a worthwhile trip for anyone looking to shop for a day.

PARKVIEW Soft Furnishings

Shoppers may also be interested in visiting Hillsborough Barracks, a walled complex of buildings with even more businesses to offer.

There is no service but this allows mourners to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. This service will also be booked at the family’s convenience. I Did It My Way’s basic service is priced from £2,310 (cremation only), with no other costs to pay. A colourful coffin depicting the client’s life, or something special about them, with the hearse and a limousine, is fully inclusive from £3,060 (cremation only). STEELS EXIT FA TROPHY By Dave Rhodes

AS storm Callum battered the east coast over the weekend a lingering drizzle welcomed the players as they entered the field of play at the recreation ground at Pickering. The FA Trophy tie rearranged as a Sunday fixture due to the 1940s event in the town on the Saturday. With an ever increasing demand on finances for non league clubs both teams would be keen to progress in this first preliminary round match. With a slope on the pitch from wing to wing the home club utilised it well with long diagonal balls stretching the home defence on numerous occasions but by enlarge these were dealt with comfortably by the Steels back line.

A half volley from Mangham, as steels countered was parried by Charlie Andrew the home goalkeeper going out for a corner, then the same player had another right foot shot that deflected wide when it looked on target. Both corners taken by Coleman led to nothing as the Pickering defence won the heading duals in a crowded 18 yard box.

Steels looked organised and bright and started to pick up second balls too, but all too often lost the ball in critical areas of the pitch as the transition from defending to attacking was in process.

Confidence levels dropped, chins were down and passes went astray as Steels tried to force the play, they needed to regroup as half time approached with Pickering looking to add to their one goal advantage. But it was Steels who took the bull by the horns with great spirit and pressed forward gaining three corners on the bounce towards the end of the half. It was better from Steels and although nothing came from the corners the away side went in at the half -time interval with fresh optimism. Steels came out of the traps strongly and were the better side pushing forward at ev-

real blow as Steels did look likely to get something at this point in the game. The excellent Wiles was a constant threat and a driving force in midfield but alas ploughed a lone furrow.

It was all Steels but on 55 minutes a killer blow when Pickering countered well, taking a two goal advantage as a left wing cross was met by Greening as he slid in at the far post. The goal was a

Again Steels were guilty of over playing in the final third, not looking after the ball when passes to runners were easier options as Steels strived to get back into the match.

Certainly Steels were not getting the rub of the green as Coleman’s terrific long range drive came back off the inside of the post and Rhodes, two yards out, just inches from connecting his head to a fine right wing cross from Coleman. But it was poor defending again that lead to Pickering sealing the game with a third goal on 80 minutes, when

Joe Danby fired high into the roof of the net, left footed from 15 yards out. Pickering saw out the last ten minutes without a problem and Steels were left to lick their wounds, didn’t deserve a three nil score line and hope that new injury worries don’t add to Chris Hiltons already depleted squad.

Mixed week for Church IT was a week of mixed results for Penistone Church as they progressed in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup with a second round win against AFC Bentley on Wednesday but then lost comprehen-

sively at home in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday. A Kieran Ryan was enough to help Church to a 1-0 win against Bentley to go into the hat for the next round

but they came unstuck in the league on Saturday. With an hour played, it was still 0-0 against Eccleshill United but Church found themselves chasing the game on 65 minutes when

Thomas Dugdale struck for the visitors. Nine minutes later, Dugdale bagged his second to give Church a mountain to climb. The defeat was sealed when Khurram Shazad scored a third.

Ten-man War Memorial hold on to win IN the only all Blades Super Draw League encounter Oughtibridge War Memorial edged past Intake Old Boys 3-2 at the War Memorial Ground. Despite a very understrength squad, War Memorial started the game brightly, and in a feisty first half Chas Tunnard went close in just the second minute before he opened the scoring soon after with a smart finish.

Last season’s top scorer Callum Chambers made his first start of the season and added two more, his first was a superb finish when he latched on to a Strachan Sampson pass and the he made no mistake from the spot to put the home side three up after half an hour. Mark West and Sam Knight made it a close game with strikes for Intake but Oughtibridge, who missed a hatful of second

half chances, managed to hold on despite playing the last half an hour with ten men after Harley Scholey was injured and they had no substitutes to call on. On Thursday October 25, Oughtibridge War Memorial will face Norton Oaks in the Blades Super Draw Steve Gee Merit Cup Final at Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Look Local Stadium, kick off is 7.15pm and entry is free..

Stocksbridge Rugby come unstuck on the road

A FLAT wide pitch and a gale greeted Stocksbridge Rugby as they made the short trip to Mosborough Rugby at the weekend in the Yorkshire Division Four league clash.

With a crippling injury list, head coach Rhys Keenan was forced to dig deep into his playing roster, with a couple of walking wounded having to make up the interchange bench. The starting line up included no less than six players who usually turn out for the development XV stepping up a level. There was also a welcome return for long term injury victim Tom Spencer, whose shoulder is now healed. Stocksbridge started strongly and were camped in the home side’s 20 metre zone in the early stages. A reckless high tackle on scrum half Frith lead to a simple penalty opportunity which Bowskill duly accepted to nudge the Pigs in front. Disaster from the kick off, a recurring theme of the afternoon, gave Mosborough immediate possession and they punished some weak defence to score a converted try and take the lead.

Mosborough 29-23 Stocksbridge

As the visitors piled on the pressure, the larger, slower home forwards struggled to cope in the loose and quick thinking from Frith at a penalty allowed Bowskill a free run at the line which he gleefully accepted to edge Stocksbridge in front and added the conversion extras for good measure.

Further poor communication for the resulting restart allowed the kick off to find touch and from the lineout the home forwards gradually made their way towards the line and scored their second try of the afternoon. In an end-to-end contest Stocksbridge had much the better of both territory and possession and should have been well clear of Mosborough by half time.

A rushed pass from the home scrum half was read and intercepted by Scotty Bowskill who again crossed under the posts to increase the lead, with the added conversion too. Mosborough added a simple penalty when the Stocksbridge forwards infringed at a ruck and chose to take the points on offer as both sides seemed to settle for being level at half time. Almost on the stroke of half time and deep inside their own territory, a risky play by the Mosborough backs created an overlap for their speedy winger to go almost the length of the field via some paper thin defence, to produce the try of the day and give the home side the advantage by 22-17 at the break. All was still to play for in the second stanza and taking advantage of the gusting wind Bowskill nudged Stocksbridge closer to parity making a difficult penalty kick look easy. Spencer, Keenan and Joe Smith were introduced to the fray and a couple of incidents led to a brawl involving several

players from both teams. The referee, quite correctly, issued a red card to the home side’s chief antagonist for a reckless boot to the head of the luckless skipper Rowett. Facing 14 men, Stocksbridge began to take control but lacked the accuracy to complete some promising attacks and at least three tries went begging because of simple handling errors. As both sides tired, Mosborough crashed over for the killer try meaning Stocksbridge have to score twice for victory. The brave effort from the visitors cannot be questioned but try as they might Stocksbridge just couldn’t burst the home side’s dam, although another Bowskill penalty with 15 minutes remaining kept them in the hunt and just six points adrift. This proved to be the last score of an entertaining game with the home side taking the spoils and a final score of Mosborough Rugby 29 Stocksbridge Rugby 23 left the Pigs with just a losing bonus point to show for their efforts. Stocksbridge hold on to second place on the league ladder. However, in form Hessle are the visitors to Coal Pit Lane this weekend and just three points separate the two teams. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to half back Scott Bowskill for a personal haul of all 23 Stocksbridge points, Scott is sponsored by Byron & Teresa Turner.
