Stocksbridge remembers with poppy display

IN September the Stocksbridge Town Council made a request for local residents to make a poppy as their own personal memorial to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

The Town Council have been overwhelmed by the positive response to this request. Many people have made several poppies and one resident, who is over 90 years of age, knitted over 300 poppies.

As the poppies are a personal memorial there were no hard and fast rules as to how the poppies should be made.

The High Street Knitting Shop provided knitting and crochet patterns for people to follow.

Poppies have also been made from bottle bottoms, felt, paper and pebbles.

Local community groups, schools and toddler groups joined the project using the poppy making as a way for local children to learn about the wars and the role of the annual remembrance service and parade in the Town.

The Town Council have installed the poppies on the Clock Tower Gardens as a memorial to the fallen from the Town.

The Mayor Cllr Julie Grocutt said:

Each year the Town holds a remembrance service and parade. As this year marks the centenary of the end of the first world war, we wanted to do something special to pay our respect for the sacrifice of local service men and women."

I would like to thank everyone who made a poppy and hope that local people will join the 11am service at the Clock Tower on Remembrance Sunday."
