VOTE OF ‘NO CONFIDENCE’ IN MP AT the most recent General Meeting of the Penistone & Stocksbridge Labour CLP held on Friday November 16, a motion of ‘no confidence’ in Angela Smith MP was passed with a majority of 27 votes in favour to 20 against with one abstention. The motion calls for the vote of ‘no confidence’ to be forwarded to the Chief Whip of the Labour Party and request that he withdraw the whip from Angela. Angela Smith has represented this CLP since it was created in 2010. Before that she was MP for Sheffield Hillsborough from 2005 to 2010. In the motion, the CLP noted that in 2015, Angela Smith voted against greater restrictions on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract shale gas in National Parks, the Broads, areas of outstanding natural beauty, World Heritage sites, and near points where water is abstracted for domestic and food production purposes. It also noted that earlier this month at a water industry conference in Manchester that Angela
had described Labour’s plans for the return to public ownership of the privatised water industry were, “undeveloped, un-costed and should not be a priority amid so many post-Brexit challenges.” She denounced the proposals, promoted by John Mc Donnell, as ideological and founded in “the politics of the past.” The motion also noted that she had written in the press articles that undermine the leadership and the wider party as well as tweeting and retweeting criticism of Jeremy Corbyn.
The CLP say they believe that she has demonstrated that she no longer represents the views of the CLP by her conduct, her actions, and in articles she has written. They added that “She has been a persistent and visceral critic of Jeremy Corbyn and through her divisive attacks on him she has damaged the Labour Party locally and nationally. “Her articles and comments on Fracking and Privatised Water Companies that are contrary to the Labour Party Manifesto com-
mitments, demonstrate that she has lost touch with the Party and the constituents she was elected to represent. “She has snubbed this CLP very publicly at an event to raise funds for her election campaign.
“The relationship of trust and respect that is an essential and fundamental requirement between an MP and their Constituency Party has broken down, perhaps irrevocably, and as result the CLP has no confidence in Angela Smith to represent its members as our MP.” Angela Smith responded with statement on Twitter. It read: “I take my responsibilities as a Member of Parliament very seriously and my first priority is always to do my job, to the best of my ability. “It is frankly astonishing that a cabal of hard left members has absorbed everyone’s precious time and energy on an inaccurate and divisive motion of no confidence.
“Given that the country is facing its biggest crisis since Suez, one would have thought their attention would be better focused on the huge decision facing the country, a decision that will affect the lives of every one of my constituents for years to come. “I will continue to prioritise our area and my constituents and will not be distracted by internal political posturing such as this.” Some fellow MPs have defended Angela. Wakefield MP Mary Creagh tweeted: “Sorry to see my friend and Yorkshire neighbour and fellow eco champion Angela Smith MP being treated like this.” Chuka Umunna posted: “The hard right - Boris, Rees-Mogg, Farage and co - are in the midst of an attempt to hijack UK politics and some UK Labour activists think the priority should be passing votes of no confidence in centre-Left MPs fighting these Brexiters in Parliament. Utterly disgraceful.”

Busy Beacon seeks new blood STEEL Valley Beacon will hold casting auditions in February for two shows -‘Addams Family – the Musical’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ which will be staged in the Autumn of 2019. Anyone who would like to be considered for a part should request an audition pack from Mandy on 07966054959 or manyja@hotmail.co.uk. Anyone interested in other aspects of production such as sound, lighting, design, costumes or publicity etc is also encouraged to get in touch. The group promises a friendly working atmosphere and a lot of fun. Three shows are currently in rehearsal. The junior group will be performing ‘Wind in the Willows’ in St Ann’s Hall on Saturday January 26 and Sunday January 27 (matinee). Director Mandy Aitken describes the experience of working with this group of 25, the youngest being just four, as exhilarating though exhausting. She is assisted by professional writer, Suzy Senior, and accomplished musician Joe Shaw. All three are delighted

by the enthusiasm and inventiveness of the group and a thrilling show is promised. The youth section – numbering 30 and ranging in age from 12 to 25 – will perform a Terry Pratchett play, ‘Wyrd Sisters’, a gripping and amusing parody of ‘Macbeth’, in Stocksbridge High School on February 15 and 16. The ‘less young’ members of the group will stage the Pantomime ‘Robin Hood and his Big Bad Band of Girlies’ along with a repeat of the well-received ‘Last Tango in Little Grimley’ and some comedy sketches, in St Ann’s Hall, including a licensed bar, on January 11 and 12.
ing too and from school, dog walkers, ramblers, joggers and local residents walking to the Asda and the railway station at Chapeltown.
Parish Cllr Alison Gethin, secretary of the Thorncliffe Conservation Group, said: “A member of our group went out to cover a small hole reported to us. He made it safe and put hazard tape around to alert walkers to the danger.
Parish Cllr Zoe Sykes said: “The police have been informed as this is a crime which could have easily resulted in injury or even death.
“As there is no lighting on that stretch of the TPT anyone crossing the bridge could have easily broken a leg or even worse. “The bridge is now out of action and the nearest alternative route has steps, so is not disabled friendly.”
Steel Valley Beacon, now in its 20th year, thanks those who regularly patronise their shows and in particular for the encouragement this gives their younger performers. Much hard work in preparation is considered worthwhile in itself but performing to an appreciative audience is especially rewarding.

LAST Wednesday, vandals damaged a bridge by the duck pond on the Trans Pennine Trail between Cart Road and Bridge Inn Road.
“Unfortunately, just before 9pm that same night, a local resident heard banging and footsteps running into the woods. The next morning the bridge was as shown by the photograph.
Tickets for all the shows are available from Vanessa at Stocksbridge Keys, through any member of the company or on 0114 2884391.
This bridge was constructed in 2006 using 106 monies and since then the Thorncliffe Conservation Group with support from the Sheffield Countriside Partnership based at Wood Lane, Stannington have maintained the Pond, Summerhills and adjacent ancient woodland. The right of way over this bridge is well used by children walk-

“Our current City Councilor Andy Bainbridge gave a witness statement on this paperwork. Since then our group of volunteers have been looking after this route at little or no cost to the Council. I therefore see no reason for a delay in Sheffield City Council repairing this bridge.” The group used to hold work sessions on the first Saturday each month but as most of the group are retired they now meet on the first Monday of each month. The group welcomes volunteers but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. If you’re interested just turn up for a session or call Alison Gethin on 0114 2467414.

HIGH GREEN MAN FINED £10,000 FOR FOOTBALL VIOLENCE A 19-year-old High Green man has been handed a suspended prison sentence, a £10,000 fine and a threeyear Football Banning Order after pleading guilty to the assault of a football fan. Bradley Smart appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday November 12 where he was sentenced to 15months in prison, suspended for two years, as well as given a three-year banning order and ordered to pay a £10,000 fine. He pleaded guilty to Section 20 Assault. On Saturday September 16 2017, after the Sheffield United v Norwich match,
two visiting fans from Norwich suffered serious injuries after disorder on Bramall Lane. The men, aged 55 and 25, required hospital treatment for their serious head and facial injuries. Temporary Chief Inspector Phil Barraclough, from South Yorkshire Police’s Operational Support Unit, said: “Following the disorder on Bramall Lane in September 2017, an investigation was immediately launched. “Through CCTV enquiries and public appeals for information, we were able to identify Smart and a number of other individuals.
“I am pleased that he has been handed a significant sentence for his crime, as this sends a strong message that violence will not be tolerated and if you choose to engage in disorder at football or any other public event, the consequences can be severe. “South Yorkshire Police are working in partnership with all five football clubs in our county to ensure that our football events are trouble-free and that supporters from all clubs can visit our football grounds and enjoy the occasion without fear of violence. “The football clubs are also committed to identifying any persons who are involved in football-related crime and disorder and will take positive action
to ban any supporters convicted from their grounds.” Breach of a banning order is a criminal offence, punishable by a maximum sentence of six-months in prison or a fine of up to £5,000, or both. In addition, a further banning order may be imposed. Four other men have also been convicted of their involvement in the disorder and were sentenced last month. On October 18 at Sheffield Crown Court, all four men were convicted of affray and each sentenced to ninemonths in prison, suspended for two years, as well as given three-year banning orders and fined.

UNIVERSITY Campus Barnsley Travel and Tourism and Acting for Touring Theatre students successfully launched a living history event to remember the end of World War One. The Home from the Front event at Elsecar Heritage Centre provided an authentic recreation of the demobilisation of troops by using a steam locomotive No.813, built in 1904 in Leeds, and Great North of Scotland No.34, a six-wheel railway carriage. Acting for Touring Theatre students played the role
of troops, nurses and others at the front line who made the journey back to their homes around the UK between 1918 and 1920. Oliver Edwards, a Travel and Tourism student and Co-Organiser of the event, said: “The event has helped strengthen relationships between students and the wider community. We are grateful to all our partners for their help in making this event a success. It has definitely provided me with experience I can use in the future.”

REDISCOVER YOUR POTENTIAL.
Neil Johnson, Head of Service Industry at UCB, added: “The students’ behaviour and attitude was exemplary. They really got into their roles and gave the public a realistic experience of life during World War One. Each student played their part in helping achieve the aims and objectives of the event, making it a huge success.” To find out more about University Campus Barnsley and our courses call 01226 216 165, visit universitycampus.barnsley. ac.uk or email info@barnsley. ac.uk.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Readers may have heard that there has been a vote of no confidence against Angela Smith MP. In her response, she has said that this is a distraction at a time when the country is in crisis.
She says this is the work of a ‘cabal’. Well, if it is, I’m not in it. I just want the option of being able to vote for a genuine Labour MP who mostly backs the leader and politics.
We are still looking for singers, groups, bands, solo musicians, choirs and dance groups who perform classical, choral, rock, pop, folk, indie, rap, jazz or indeed anything else! We would especially love to hear from young people playing in bands and young solo singers.
For the past two weeks I have been selling poppies on behalf of the Royal British Legion at the Aldi store in Fox Valley. I would like to thank the staff of Aldi for their support.
Come and see us on Friday November 23 at 7pm at the Rugby Club, 634 Manchester Road Stocksbridge A big thank you to the good folk of Stocksbridge when we will tell you more about the festival and and Deepcar for their generous donations. you can book your spot. Stocksbridge golf ROUND three of the Winter Cup was played in calm and mild conditions at Stocksbridge Golf Club and it showed with some excellent scoring. A total of 47 players competed and enjoyed the course, which is in excellent condition for the time of year. All greens are in play and the use of some temporary tees is in place following work by the greens staff on the main tees. Eight players matched or bettered the standard scratch for the day of 37 points in the Stableford format. J Dean won with an impressive 42 point that included a birdie and eight pars and 25 points on the front nine alone. N Elliott pipped P Finney, both on the same score of 41 points, with a better back nine. Pete Finney managed an impressive six birdies in his round. M Page came in fourth with 39 points. The Dragons Christmas Cracker Round three took place on November 14. Twenty-nine section members took part and D Stringer won with 38 points. F Hines came second with 37 points, just in front of G Stainforth with 35 points. The Dragons section will enjoy their annual presentation ceremony and dinner in the Club House on December 12. The Mid-week Stableford Division One winner was T Newton with 39 points. M Hulbert was second with 38 and L O’Sullivan was third with 32 points. The Division Two winner was G Stainforth with 40 points. Second was D Jones with 34 and A Mosley was third with 34 points (a lower score on the back nine).
Stocksbridge PS 0-2 Pickering Town Report by Dave Rhodes PICKERING Town provided the opposition at Look Local Stadium and with both teams too near the bottom for comfort the game took on a sixpointer feel to it. Steels came out of the blocks strongly and created good chances for Wiles, Ruthven and Williams, all blocked by Pickering defenders packing the six yard box. Another shot by Williams was straight at Charlie Andrew the away goalkeeper and Mangham’s header from Coleman’s outswinging corner was just over. It was a positive first 20 minutes for Steels with some good approach play and passing phases. Great work down the right by Rhodes, Wiles and Mangham gave Williams the opportunity to fire a low cross across the face of the goal only to see the ball, frustratingly, zip past all.
Encouraging signs for Steels, who never really looked in danger, and were largely in control of the game at this point. But how goals change the course of games. A sloppy ball across the Steels midfield lines was picked up by a Pickering forward who immediately sent Josh Greening scurrying in on goal, Amissah was quick to react but only half blocked the effort from 16 yards out as the ball rolled over the line. Steels really never recovered from this setback as Pickering seized the opportunity by forcing corners and pressing forward but without testing Amissah to any degree. The second half was a largely uneventful affair. Confidence is such a big requirement that when it’s low individuals start to over play, over do things and take the easy options. The game was littered with offsides from both sides which impacted on any sort of attrac-
tive passages of play from each team. On 75 minutes Pickering went further in front with a poor goal conceded by Steels. Amissah may be disappointed as he was slow to react, down to his right, after the lively Josh Greening scuffed a left footed effort from 20 yards past him low into the corner of the net. Steels great efforts to achieve something were largely disappointing as they just couldn’t find an end product. McFadyen’s free header from Coleman’s corner just missing was a highlight and typical of how things were going for Steels as the ball went the wrong side of the post. Pickering saw out the second half with ease and the away keeper having a quiet day at the office is becoming all too familiar for the Steels’ loyal supporters. Next up at the Look Local is Spalding United on December 1 with a 3pm kick off.
Steels fight back to earn point against Villa High Green Villa FC 2-2 Stocksbridge Park Steels FC Reserves A LUKE Townsend brace rescued a point for Steels in the local derby on Saturday. Villa were the best side for an hour of this game and played the better football taking the lead in the first half when the Steels defence failed to deal with a cross into the box. Although not playing well, Steels created some chances in the first half but were wasteful in front of goal. Things didn’t improve much at the start of the second half and Villa increased their lead with a
curling shot from Jack Jones into the far corner of Bond’s goal.
great strike from the edge of the box.
Steels changed their shape and went to three at the back and this started the comeback. Good pressing in midfield got the ball to Townsend and he looked up and chipped the keeper from 30 yards.
Although now on top, Steels still had to be careful not to get caught on the break.
Steels were now on the front foot and put the tiring Villa defence under more pressure. The equaliser came when Townsend again got on the ball and made himself a yard of space to curl home a
Whilst this was probably Steels reserves’ worst performance of the season they can take the positive from not letting their heads drop at 2-0 down to come back and gain a point - it means they have still only lost one game out of 12 this season. Next game is Saturday November 24 against AFC Penistone with a 3pm kick off.

Church score five on the road Hall Road Rangers 0-5 Penistone Church PENISTONE Church took a fantastic 5-0 win on the road at Hall Road Rangers in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday. Tom Cadzow opened scoring on nine minutes but Steels had to wait for the second half until they could add to the score.
Sam Scrivens opened the floodgates on 52 minutes with Nathan Keightley adding a third on the hour and Jack Tanser putting through his own net on 86 minutes. Just a minute later, Conor Glavin wrapped up the scoring. After the game, Church manager Ian Richards said: “I’m really pleased the score line reflected the performance.
At half time we were 1-0 up, the performance was excellent first half we just didn’t convert the goals - we created a number of chances. “The front three were excellent and linked up well, Ash Ellis and Danny Howes built a great platform which allowed Jordan Coduri to go and join in. We were excellent from open play and closed play situations.”

PIGS ENJOY BIG WIN
STOCKSBRIDGE restored their winning form on Saturday with an emphatic win against Stanley Rodillians, having last earned a victory in the reverse fixture in September. Bridge did not stand on ceremony as the game kicked off, immediately finding a hole in the Stanley Rods defence. A clinical back line play found the returning Ben Senior who rolled back the years as he powered through the line, stepped inside the full back and dotted down under the sticks. Scott Bowskill dutifully added the extras to make a 7-0 lead. At every juncture Bridge looked like extending the score as they remained dominant during the opening exchanges, but an eagerness to capitalise on the pressure meant that chances were forced and opportunities missed. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the lead was doubled as quick ball off the line out found Pete Newton on the fringe who gratefully made the most of a huge gap in the stretched Rods defence to slide in for a try.

The home side would have to absorb a period of pressure on their own line as Joe Jones was sent to the bin for repeat offside offences. Solid defence prevented Rods from adding a score of their own, before defence
