Glenn Boardman, 59, was killed in Chapeltown in June. Michael Andrew Goddard, 50, of Steven Close, was remanded to custody and appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Friday June 29. He was charged with murder and the trial began last Tuesday.

A post-mortem examination concluded that 59-year-old Mr Boardman died as a result of stab wounds.

An investigation was launched into Mr Boardman’s death after his body was discovered at a house in Steven Close, just be-

The trial is taking place at Sheffield Crown Court and prosecutor Peter Moulson QC said a circular trail of blood almost three miles long was found to lead from Michael Goddard’s flat through woodlands before returning to his flat. The blood

was tested and found to be the defendant’s blood. A jacket belonging to the defendant was also found on the trail of blood, covered in a mix of Mr Boardman and Mr Goddard’s blood. It was Mr Goddard who called the emergency services at 12.26am, claiming to have arrived at Mr Boardman’s flat to find an unidentified man who slashed at his hand before escaping through the window.

FORMER COACH HOUSE TO BECOME AGE UK CAFE

THE planned redevelopment of a derelict listed building in Hillsborough Park has received initial National Lottery support, it was announced this week. Age UK Sheffield plans to renovate the 18th Century Old Coach House building into a dementiafriendly older people’s centre, and café open to the entire community.

The project has received development funding of £49,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players this award will enable the local charity to progress the plans and apply for a full National Lottery grant at a later date. The project aims to create a vibrant hub to support dementiafriendly group activities such as singing and dancing, as well as

classroom-based activities and educational classes such as digital drop-ins. The community café will be open to the thousands of local park visitors, including dog-walkers, children’s playground users, and Park runners. It aims to provide local employment and volunteering opportunities in the Hillsborough area and introduce people to the

Walled Garden and other heritage within the park. Age UK Sheffield Chief Executive, Steve Chu, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. Thanks to National Lottery players we have a real opportunity to develop The Old Coach House into a thriving community venue for older people in Sheffield and local people in Hillsborough.

“Importantly, through this project, we can bring back into use a derelict listed building that would otherwise soon be lost.” The abandoned coach house, last used as a munitions store during the Second World War, could be open for use by the whole community by the end of 2020.

There is currently no dedicated older people’s activity centre in Sheffield. Age UK Sheffield is particularly interested in developing inter-generational learning opportunities and concepts such as a ‘Nana’s Café’, with socially-isolated older people being brought to together to cook for other people.

Marie Curie seeks volunteers in north Sheffield

MARIE Curie is looking to recruit more volunteers to collect in supermarkets, organise collections and events, or manage tins out on shop counters around the north Sheffield area. As collection organiser you would be responsible for co-ordinating on the day of a bucket collection in one of the town’s supermarkets, and being a collection box co-ordinator you would be responsible for contacting sites like post offices, newsagents and petrol stations to encourage them to host collection tins.

You then monitor the tins from time to time and, when it’s full, replace it and bank the money. Marie Curie are also looking for ad hoc collectors to sign up to their Great Daffodil Appeal campaign, as well as always needing more members for our Fundraising Groups organising events in their local areas across Sheffield. All of these roles only involve a small commitment and you would have the full support of the local community fundraiser, Rebecca Bramley.

Rebecca told Look Local: “We rely on local fundraising volunteers to be able to continue our national flagship nursing and support services. Marie Curie provides care and support to patients living with a terminal illness. “If you are interested in helping the charity with volunteering, however much time you have to give, please do get in touch.” You can contact Rebecca Bramley on 07525 392984, 01274 386190 or rebecca.bramley@ mariecurie.org.uk

Three friends raise thousands for charity THREE friends walked 100kms in three days through the World War One battlefields in October to raise money for a soldier’s charity. Steve Milne, Jonny Peat and Rob Hulley donned their walking boots to take on the Frontline Walk to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund. The Soldiers Charity was established in 1944 to help injured soldiers and their immediate family when they need it the most. Countless servicemen and women have benefited from ABF aid and will continue to do so for many years to come.

One of the battlefields was the Somme, where the Sheffield Pals Battalion were massacred at the Battle of the Somme on July 1 1916. Almost 20,000 soldiers lost their lives on that fateful first day, with another 40,000 injured. The three friends have raised around £10,000 for the charity in doing the walk and have had many backers including Sheffield Wednesday. Their base of operations was the Thorncliffe Arms in Chapeltown, who allowed them to hold functions and raise thousands.

Steve Milne served in the TA for 23 years as a medic in the 212 field hospital based in Sheffield and has a distant relative who was awarded the Victoria Cross in WW1. He said: “I’d like to thank everyone who helped, the management of the pub have been so accommodating to this charity, we have many stories and photos of the event before and during.

th

“I have done the event twice before so this was a third time for me. Overall, countrywide, in five years of the event, it’s raised over £1,000,000 for the charity.”

Centenary fields to be created in Sheffield parks

FOLLOWING the planting of 100 new memorial trees across parks in Sheffield, Sheffield City Council plans to create a Centenary Field in each park protecting these public green spaces as sites of commemoration for future generations. 100 war memorial trees have been planted this year, across 36 parks and public spaces, as part of the city’s commemoration of the centenary of the end

of First World War, with a further 200 more to be planted in the coming year. In creating Centenary Fields around the new war memorial, the council will create a lasting legacy to mark the centenary of WW1 by commemorating the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the conflict and ensuring that their communities benefit now and in the future from protected green spaces.

Sheffield already has two designated Fields in Trust at Weston Park and Ochre Dike Recreation Ground. The council now hopes to extend this protection further by protecting areas of the parks where war memorial trees have been planted.

Centenary Fields is a national initiative being led by Fields in Trust and the Royal British Legion. The Centenary Fields programme 2014-18 aims to protect at least one green space in every

local authority area across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

ancillary facilities for each site, now and in future, whilst making sure the quality and quantity of the green space is not compromised.

The Council will work collaboratively with local groups and Fields in Trust in terms of the detailed deeds of covenants for each site and each designation will be designed to best fit with the needs of the site. This will ensure the Council retains appropriate flexibility to provide a wide range of leisure and

The parks where memorials have been planted include Chapeltown Park, Ecclesfield Park, Grenoside Recreation Ground, Middlewood Park, Mortomley Park, Oxley Park, Parkwood Springs, Parson Cross Park, Rivelin Valley Park and Stannington Park.

Fire service opens doors to rough sleepers for second winter THE fire service is opening its doors to rough sleepers on the coldest nights in Sheffield for a second winter. Up to eight people are able to stay overnight at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s headquarters, on Eyre Street in Sheffield, with British Red Cross volunteers on hand to welcome them. Framework’s street outreach team and the council’s rough sleeper service will engage with people the next morning to talk about their needs and the longer-term support available. During the winter Sheffield City Council activates its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, known locally as Weather Watch, in response to the potential risk to life when the weather is very cold. This offers somewhere safe and warm overnight for anyone at risk of rough sleeping. Richard Crow, British Red Cross emergency response officer for South Yorkshire said: “We have responded to a request from Sheffield City Council alongside South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue to support at this scheme providing emergency shelter to the homeless in the city. British Red Cross volunteers and staff will be on hand to provide practical and emotional support, including the provision of hot food and drinks, and signposting service users to longer-term support where needed. “The Red Cross responds to an emergency every four hours across the UK, working with partners to help people in crisis.” South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Area Manager, Tony Carlin, said: “Helping people in need and saving lives is core to our mission as a fire service, so it makes perfect sense for us to provide emergency accommodation during particularly severe weather periods. “This initiative provides comfort, warmth and shelter for rough sleepers and the homeless and is a clear example of public agencies working together to help some of the most vulnerable people in our area.” Anyone who is homeless, or at risk of losing their accommodation, can call Sheffield City Council on 0114 273 6306 during office hours, or 0800 7311 689 outside office hours. The fire station opens its doors at 9pm on the coldest nights and places are allocated by contacting Sheffield City Council on the numbers above or by calling into First Point at Howden House. Staff at the fire station link people up to the Council’s Out of Hours Service when the fire station places are full, so that warmth and shelter can be found elsewhere. If you’re worried about someone sleeping rough please call Framework on 0800 066 5358 or Text SOTS to 80800 followed by your message, or visit www.streetlink.org.uk. You can also call the Weather Watch numbers on someone’s behalf (0114 273 6306 or 0800 7311 689 outside office hours) but please do this when you’re with the person so they can provide extra information. and condition of the privatised water industry is likely to require some form of public ownership. This needs to be recognised rather than tilting at windmills and pretending, as Mike does, that everything is for best in the best of all possible worlds.

We wish you God’s love and Peace over the festive The answer to why this is so can be found in the period. organisational business model. Regardless of whether its the privatised Water Companies, UK Ray and Veronica Hawley and all the team at the Rail, US healthcare, or Carillion, the reason why Hub food bank. many of these organisations are so expensive is to a greater or lesser extent since the 1980s they are all built around the notion that a firm is merely a collection of contracts between constituent parts rather than an organisation. Which is what sunk Privatised water industry Carillion. Perusing the correspondence from Councillor Mike Levery (Letters November 29) on the Water Industry provided a timely reminder of the old adage that people are entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts. Although there was stiff competition in this regard on that particular weeks letters page.

Consequently, when a problem arises in regard to a tick in a box regulatory or other target metric not being met what happens is a penalty claim is made by one actor – say a division of a water company upon a contractor who in turn invokes a similar claim against a sub contractor or other part of the organisation. This has important consequences.

Mike puts forward a partial and misleading picture with a selective use of facts which needs to be Firstly, the claims-management process is itself costly. Dear Editor (ii) The dire financial condition and the complex financial structure of the privatised water companies – some of which are “owned and controlled by funds domiciled in tax havens” such as “Luxembourg, Guernsey and the Cayman Islands” - which is unsustainable. In their 2017 Water Industry Risks Briefing the Environmental Rating Agency (ERA) noted that the debt levels of privatised water companies stands between £40-50 billion. This is as a result of “complex company structures” and “business models” reliant on “inter-company loans, bonds (which are often index linked), swaps, derivatives and currency hedges” which put these companies “at risk of insolvency in the event of unexpected changes in interest rates or inflation.”

The recent controversy regarding shortage of flu’ vaccine this year, consequently served to remind me of the following article that appears in the OUGHTBRIDGE NOTES column of the March 9 1900 edition of the Penistone Express (p5) which relates that: “An esteemed Worrall correspondent sends me a newspaper cutting, which he thinks will be comforting to the Oughtibridge butchers, who have some difficulty in meeting the demands of the influenza patients for leg beef. Here is the extract: – ‘A cow owned by Mr. Sharp, of Wilburton, Cambridge, has given birth to five calves. The cow and calves are alive and doing well.’ My friend thinks this is good news for Oughtibridge, and hopes the farmers will secure that class of beast and thus help the butchers to overcome their difficulty. Could it be a veiled reference to a case of Oughtibridge butchers at the time creating an artificial shortage of beef legs in an effort to hike up the price to influenza sufferers at the time? Or a comment on the inefficiencies of the free market when it comes to supplying an appropriate quantity of flu’ remedy? Then again, just how effective were/are beef legs in tackling the vagaries born of influenza? And how was the remedy prepared and administered I wonder? Food for thought as “they” say?! SUPPORTED BY THE MEETING PLACE SOCIAL CAFE £3 VOLUNTARY DONATION • ALL AGES WELCOME RELAXED ATMOSPHERE WITH GOOD COMPANY

DO you know someone who will be spending Christmas day alone? Perhaps it’s you? The Meeting Place, a new initiative in Stocksbridge, has bought together over 20 volunteers from around town to put on a ‘Christmas Day Together’ event at Christ Church Community Hall. Guests are welcome to come and join us from 11.30am till 4pm where they can enjoy good company, a great atmosphere, fun games and activities and plenty of festive food, including a two course Christmas dinner at 1pm. For those of you who prefer to relax after they have eaten there will be a comfortable space provided to watch a film in the

afternoon. For all this we just ask for a small donation of ÂŁ3 to help contribute to our costs.

will be, please let them know about this event and how to contact us.

From experience we understand that for all kinds of reasons it is easy for people of all ages to find themselves alone on days like these when others are busy occupied with their families. This event wants to make sure that if a person would rather not be alone they can come meet others and celebrate the day together. All ages are very welcome and are encouraged, this includes single parents who are alone with their children. If you are not alone this Christmas but know of somebody that

We are looking at catering for up to 50 people, there are still places available so if you would like to enquire or book a place for yourself or someone you know, please ring The Meeting Place coordinator, Sarah on 07800923192 or email her via SCcoordinator@outlook.com. This should be a great day, we hope you can come along and be a part of it.

See Santa at Fox Valley THE team at Fox Valley are working with the Wortley Rotary Club this month to bring Father Christmas to the centre throughout December.

Father Christmas can be found every Saturday and Sunday in the unit next to Ponti’s Italian Kitchen where he is ready to meet young visitors and find out what’s on their Christmas list this year. The grotto visit costs just £5 and all proceeds are donated to the Rotary Club

charities – every child receives a present as well as a traditional apple or orange.

Father Christmas will be at Fox Valley on December 15 and 16 from 11am through to 3pm. Events manager at Fox Valley Kayleigh Marron said: “We are delighted to be working with the team from the Wortley Rotary Club to bring Father Christmas to Fox Valley and to raise lots of money for local good causes.

“We had a great response to his first weekend and look forward to seeing lots more visitors over the next two weekends. This weekend the Salvation Army will also be performing at Fox Valley on Saturday and the local Hub Church will be singing traditional carols in the bandstand on Sunday – both performances will start at 12pm.

Ryan Johnson got the consolation for Church with a Joe Pugh brace and goals from Thomas Poole and Robson Doolan giving Staveley the win. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “Credit to Staveley today, they were the better team and the better team won. The score didn’t flatter them, they deserved to win by three goals. “I like Staveley as a football club, I have respect for the Staveley management team and I like Staveley as a football team on the grass. “They deserved that it just wasn’t our day, we were second best and we just have to hold our hands up and we have to accept responsibility.”

Barnsley College teams up with Aidan Appleyard

BARNSLEY College’s Sports Academy has teamed up with former professional basketball player, Aidan Appleyard, to develop its Basketball Academy. Aidan, who most recently played for Leeds Force in the British Basketball League, will provide young basketball players with an excellent opportunity to combine education and basketball.

AT the fourth and final 2018 South Yorkshire Cross Country League meeting at a very muddy Graves Park in Sheffield, Penistone Footpath Runners secured an immediate return to Division One. The club had been relegated to Division Two in 2017 so it was pleasing to secure an immediate return to compete with the best running clubs in South Yorkshire.

The success has been down to the strong commitment across the club from the juniors through to the seniors.

The final fixture also represented the South Yorkshire Cross Country Championships and there was further success for the club on the day.

Penistone’s performance was so strong that they would have actually finished second in Division One as the leagues compete in the same races.

Barbara Haigh and Julia Johnson again achieved second places in their age groups while Shaun Dimelow came third. Matt Robinson achieved third over-50 man.

There was also overall series success for Shaun Dimelow who was first over-40 man. Barbara Haigh achieved second over-65 woman and Julia Johnson second over-55 woman. Scott Hinchcliffe was third in the senior male category.

Husband and wife John and Jacqueline Howsham achieved double success with first and second at the Amy’s Retreat Santa Dash at Weston Park.

Aidan said: “I am looking forward to developing the basketball players of the future. I want to grow the Basketball Academy into one of the top five academies in the country. I think my playing experience will help me as a coach and benefit the students to fulfil their potential.” Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Coordinator at the College, added: “We are extremely pleased that Aidan has agreed to work with us. Aidan has a wealth of knowledge and coaching expertise, as well as contacts in the UK and overseas which will create opportunities for our students. Students will be able to gain valuable experience and learn from his experiences in the professional game, while gaining match day experience and regular support through College games.”

STEELS CONTINUE SLIDE AT OSSETT Ossett United 3-0 Stocksbridge PS

By Dave Rhodes GLAD to see the back of an ill-fated November, manager Chris Hilton and his staff were keen to get the boys back onto the pitch after a much improved performance against fellow strugglers Spalding United last time out but they fell to a 3-0 defeat away from home. With the squad now looking stronger in both quantity and quality there was an emerging, quiet optimism around Bracken Moor. It was a bright start for both teams on a quick pitch with well organised defences dominant early on. Ossett looked a strong experienced outfit but threatened Ed Hall, the away keeper, very little over the course of the first 20 minutes or so, indeed, it was Steels who opened up the home team well. Good play by Litchfield saw him cut inside from the right before firing a strong left footed shot that Brett Souter parried into the path of the onrushing Ruthven. The striker missed though, with Souter saving at his feet. Then Grayson missed the rebound from point blank range when Souter reacted and saved well.

On 25 minutes a long dead ball punt to the edge of the area found the head of Tom Corner the Ossett centre forward who connected with a clean header into the path of the lively Marco Basic who calmly slotted the ball over the advancing Hall after picking up the second ball. A typical passage of play for Steels as one minute they missed opportunities at one end then conceded at the other soon after. The hard working home side now looked capable and dangerous playing the slope of the pitch very effectively with some direct football. On 37 minutes Steels were two down. It was Aiden Chippendale who was allowed to run freely from deep in midfield before unleashing a terrific leftfooted long range effort that zipped fast off the surface past Hall’s left hand giving him no chance. Again Steels reacted well with good spirit and desire but couldn’t find a way through a disciplined and well drilled Ossett back four. The second half was mostly nip and tuck with both goalkeepers having little to do. Steels, kicking down the slope, were more of a threat early on forcing a few corners and free kicks but these

led to nothing with defenders winning the personal battles overall. The home side competed strongly in midfield and gave Steels nothing during a turgid opening half hour. It was Litchfield’s right footed free kick wide on the right that was perfectly flighted into the six yard box where Steels players failed to anticipate with little meaningful movement in crucial attacking areas of the pitch. Frustrated Steels players, Jordan, Charlesworth and Litchfield were all booked in the last 10 minutes as Steels started to lose composure as they just couldn’t find a way through a solid home outfit. To compound all Steels’ decent work and vigorous second half efforts, Steels were dealt a cruel blow on 90 minutes when they were dispossessed on the half way line wide on the right. In fairness to the home side they played it brilliantly and picked off Steels’ back line easily as they passed the ball across the pitch to give substitute Jack Vann a simple side foot shot past the helpless Hall. A tough encounter in difficult conditions.
