The thief that struck at K Stuart and Sons and his car

THIEF STEALS FROM FUNDRAISING KIDS AS TWO HONESTY TINS RAIDED IN SAME NIGHT
TWO children who have been raising money for new musical instruments for their school have been left heartbroken after a cruel thief stole their collection tin. Joshua and Amelia Goss have been selling their own free range eggs. They have chickens at home which they look after, clean and feed themselves, despite being aged only eight and five.
They have been selling there eggs in an honesty box at the family farm for the last few months, also selling them regularly to school parents and teachers. But a visitor to the farm broke into the box on Saturday night and helped himself to the contents at Greenmoor. However, upon hearing of the incident, one kind person has
offered a donation of £150 to buy gardening equipment for the next fundraiser. On the same night, the honesty box at K Stuart and Sons was also raided, with the culprit caught on CCTV. The car the thief was in was also captured on screen. It appears to be a VW Passat estate with a possible registration number starting with PL05 or 06 but should be easily recognisable with the dents to the side which make it fairly unique. On Facebook, K Stuart and Sons posted: “The annoying thing is we have a load of 5mp HD cameras that I haven’t got round to installing yet due to not having time or when I had time choosing to sleep instead.
“Also last night, another honesty box belonging to two children in Greenmoor selling their free range eggs was smashed and the money taken. “The funny thing about ours was that he put his 70p in the tin to pay for the bottle of milk he took, went back to the car and then came back for the tin. “As l said before the car it’s very unique even without the registration number and I’m sure someone will recognise it. “The 24/7 self service system we’ve run for the last five years has worked very well with this being only the third major incident so we won’t put up with it. “Any information would be greatly appreciated and I guarantee your name will be kept out of it.”

Volunteers from the Steel Valley Project have been repairing the dry stone wall which borders the cemetery and clearing overgrown vegetation to help improve access, whilst still retaining a thriving habitat for wildlife in the area. Additionally, a small section of surfaced path has been installed from the lay-by to the cemetery entrance, helping to make the site more accessible for visitors.
By the time the project has been completed, visitors will also be able to learn about the history of the cemetery via an interpretation panel which the charity will design and install.

mustard gas in World War 1, was several times at death’s door. On one of these occasions the doctor, who originated from London, had been paying my father a home visit. He took my mother on one side and told her to expect the worst. Telling her to let my father have anything he desired. Mother replied that she had made him some Beef Tea. The doctor looked aghast and, probably not knowing what Beef Tea was, said “Well giving something that he likes”. This put a very puzzled look on my mother’s face. Talk about talking at cross purposes. Needless to say, father recovered. But whether from the doctor’s efforts or from the benefits of the Beef Tea is anyone’s guess. Thank you
Can I thank, through your letters page, the kind and thoughtful person who found my fatherin-law’s glasses. They went out of their way to go into the café, find our address and post them through the letterbox. Your kindness is very much appreciated.
A big thank you for the support from the people who have supported us once again for the Shoe Box Appeal up at Green Moor Church. We have sent 1,000 boxes this year and they are on their way to Romania. Margaret McGuire and all at Green Moor Church
In a spin for asthma charity I wanted to share a lovely story with you at our local gym, The Thorncliffe Leisure Centre in High Green. Our regular spinning group called Wheels of Steel, ran by Martyn Wyatt, as had one of our regular spinners give birth to a lovely baby girl last week. We decided to raise a bit of charity money and guess the baby’s sex and weight. Baby Millie was born 8lb with mum Jen and baby doing wonderfully well. The winner was Jo who won a tub of Roses chocolates! Obviously Jo now needs more spin classes to work off those extra pounds! The money has been given to Asthma UK in memory of the local lad that sadly passed away in Hesley Wood earlier this year. Jackie Charlton
Lunch club thanks ON behalf of MHA, I wish to thank all the volunteers who help with Thursday Lunch at Christ Church, Stocksbridge, without whom this service could not run. To the members I hope you have enjoyed the past year and let’s see what 2019 brings.
Concert
Thanks to Mrs Claus for coming to our Christmas party and the Co-op for raffle prizes.
Regarding Tuesday December 18 at The Venue – an evening of singing and brass band favourites. The audience joined in and the air was electric! Wendy
The two groups choir and band shared a programme so eclectic and the audience joined in with it all. Singing followed by band features – all truly singing and playing their hearts away. The two conductors dressed in Christmas fashion, so talented, giving and sharing, a camaraderie between them – we wished they could play and sing for hours more. Thank you to all the musicians and singers – they brought a truly giving show to Deepcar and Stocksbridge on a cold and rainy December night. May they all have a lovely Christmas and New Year– we can’t wait till December 2019. I’m sure the audience will be awaiting the announcement. Thanks again. Pam Bettney.

OVER the course of the last year, many of us will have been to a wedding or two. In the midst of the celebrations, it’s easy to look past the planning and preparation that takes place in the months leading up to the big day. For those couples who are currently planning their own wedding and could do with a bit of guidance, this feature will highlight local businesses who can share with you their expertise and put you on track to completing your preparations and give you peace of mind. There’s a lot to prepare for and at first it can seem daunting as though the
list will never end. There’s the venue, the dress, hair and make-up, a cake, transport and that’s just to name a few. Even if you haven’t got a date set, there’s no harm in planning ahead and getting some ideas now. A quick browse around any of the shops in this feature will help you to get ahead and ease the stress for when it’s time to make arrangements. Local artist and RSPB Old Moor work to support England’s most threatened bird LOCAL artist, Shelia Bury, is working with RSPB Old Moor, near Barnsley, to support the national ‘Back from the Brink’ willow tit project to help save the UK’s most threatened resident bird from extinction. Willow tits have declined by 94% since the 1970s. The birds thrive in scrub land found in post-industrial landscapes, making the Dearne Valley an ideal habitat for them and also one of the last places the willow tit can be found. This
project, led by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the RSPB, aims to save these delightful little birds. Shelia Bury has created a series of paintings called ‘Where willow tits fly’. She is displaying and selling her work in RSPB Old Moor’s café all winter, with 40% of every sale being donated directly to the willow tit project. Shelia said: “I was intrigued by the nature of the willow tit and their need for post-industrial landscapes. Upon
visiting the various sites these birds are known to inhabit I noted the landscapes were very paintable. Wanting to help the willow tit project I set out to paint the areas ‘Where willow tits fly’ and decided to donate a percentage of each painting sale to the Back from the Brink project to help this little bird in the Dearne.” Danielle Meyer, Visitor Experience Manager at RSPB Old Moor, said: “We are delighted to be able to exhibit She-
lia’s wonderful paintings and to highlight the plight of this fantastic, but elusive little bird. Bringing the plight of the willow tit to the public’s attention is important to its conservation. “With the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, we are working to better understand the willow tit and the habitat it needs to flourish. By the end of the project we hope to have improved its conservation status in the Dearne Valley.”
To see the paintings in the ‘Where willow tits fly’ exhibit, visit RSPB Old Moor’s café. Entry to the café and information about the project is free. There is an entry fee to access the nature reserve (free for RSPB members). To get involved or find out more information about the Back from the Brink Project, please visit www.naturebftb. co.uk. For more information about RSPB Old Moor, visit rspb.org.uk/oldmoor.
Santa visits raise more than £900 for local charities SANTA and his helpers have raised more than £900 for the Rotary Club of Wortley in the run up to Christmas at the Fox Valley festive grotto. The special grotto was created in the unit next to Ponti’s Italian Kitchen for Santa to visit and meet local children over three weekends through December. All visiting children received a special Christmas gift as well as a traditional apple or an orange from Santa – helping to raise funds for local good causes through The Rotary Club of Wortley. The Club is a local charitable group who take part in lots of fundraising activities including visits from Father Christmas. The Christmas gifts were kindly sponsored by Sandersons Department store which has hosted the Fox Valley Santa in previous years – a total of £908.65 was raised this year. Events Manager at Fox Valley Kayleigh Marron said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to The Rotary Club of Wortley for helping us organise the visits from Santa to our Fox Valley grotto. “We would also like to thank all the families who came along to see Santa and help us raise this fantastic amount for the Rotary Club to support their good causes. Everyone here at Fox Valley takes a great deal of pride in giving back to the community around us.” This year’s funds raised at Santa’s Grotto will help to support the Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club mobile defibrillator fund – enabling them to take the life-saving unit to away matches as well as having it on hand during home games. Trevor Fletcher, of the Rotary Club of Wortley, said: “It has been great to work with the team at Fox Valley again this year and we’d like to thank everyone involved in raising this fantastic amount of money.” The Rotary Club also organises Santa visiting Fox Valley for the annual Christmas lights switch on.
Tankersley win at Modeshift STARS Regional Awards TANKERSLEY St Peters Primary was awarded the School of the Year, Barnsley at the Modeshift STARS School Travel Awards again following their win the previous year and they are now the very first school in Barnsley to achieve the Gold Award.
schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel for the journey to and from school. 69 local authorities across the country participate in the scheme representing around 15,000 schools.
Modeshift STARS is supported by the Department for Transport and is free for schools to use. It is an online platform that can create a school travel plan, log sustainable travel activities and schools can work towards Modeshift STARS National Accreditation. For more information visit www.modeshiftstars.org
Schools were nominated by their local authorities for demonstrating best practice in the promotion of sustainable school travel. These nominated schools were invited to attend the Modeshift STARS Regional Awards were the Schools of the Local Authority and the Schools of the Region were announced.
Supported by the Department for Transport, it is the national school travel awards scheme that has been established to recognise
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “It’s fantastic to see Tankersley flying the flag for Barnsley. We work hard
to encourage schools to utilise active travel and Tankersley have fully embraced it. Everyone at the school should feel really proud.
“We’ll continue to work with more schools to see growth in active travel like we did this summer when promoting National Clean Air Day, and we now have a dedicated Active Travel Hub in the town centre we want to see more adults doing the same. “We want people to see both the health and environmental benefits and for residents to consider making Active Travel the everyday way to travel to and from school. It’s a small change that people can make to increase their fitness and the air quality in their community.”

Many camps in South Sudan can hold thousands of people living in makeshift accommodation in close proximity to one another, with schools, hospitals and markets all adding to the risk of fire. As Clare Holmes, a watch manager, was part of a team well as this, all cooking takes place on open fires of six volunteers who were approached by the and fire service response is limited. ‘Women in the Fire Service’ network to visit the Clare said: “The greatest risk in camps like the one camp, after a request they’d received from an aid we visited in South Sudan is during the dry season charity. which runs from November to March, so it was During the two week trip, the team provided ‘train important to put into place fire safety measures as the trainer’ courses for United Nations (UN) camp soon as possible.

“I hope that our work can make the lives of the people we visited safer for years to come.” The trip to South Sudan was supported by Fire Aid, a charity which provides donations of fire and rescue equipment and training to those in need of such assistance. The charity recently visited South Sudan in March 2018 and identified a number of substantial fire risks including a lack of awareness of fire safety. It was from this that Women in the Fire Service were asked to request if any of their members could volunteer for a second visit to the country. It is hoped there will be a follow up visit in 2019.

PENISTONE CHURCH BOSS DISAPPOINTED WITH DEFEAT Barton Town 2-1 Penistone Church PENISTONE Church manager Ian Richards said that the 2-1 defeat to Barton Town had “taken the gloss off ” a fantastic 2018. Danny Chambers had given Barton the lead after just four minutes but Church were quick to respond with Sam Scrivens levelling five minutes later. But Eddie Birch’s 46th minute strike caught Church cold after the restart and they held on to win. Manager Ian Richards commented after the game: “I‘m disappointed to lose today, not as much because of poor performance or poor attitude or work ethic from the players it’s just that it’s taken the gloss off an incredible 2018.
“It was another special year for Penistone Church FC in how we’ve progressed. As I said to the players both before and after the game it’s them who have moved this club forward. “We brought Conor Glavin in the summer and we’ve promoted Sam Scrivens and Reece High from the reserves but apart from that the same group who started the year finished the year and have progressed as a squad and a team and it’s disappointing we end it on a low moment. “We just didn’t have both ends of the pitch, we didn’t have that quality that has got us where we are this season. We conceded two soft goals that we could have dealt with better, both goal were good finishes, the first one in the bottom corner, hard to save and the second one in the top corner,
hard to save, but it should never have got to that player in that position. “We are in the top ten of teams of our level for most goals scored today we didn’t have that quality or creativity in front of goal. The pitch didn’t help and in the second half you could see that after they scored early that both teams struggled to convert any chances. “It wasn’t through a lack of endeavour or wanting to score we just couldn’t get that quality or cutting edge in front of goal. It doesn’t mean we’re not going to get it next week it doesn’t mean we’re not going back to keeping a clean sheet, we’re in the top ten nationally, and we’re second in the league with the most number of clean sheets and third for fewest goals conceded. It just wasn’t to be today.”

Broom notches up 200 different Parkruns
PENISTONE Footpath Runners’ John Broom has reached a notable milestone by completing his 200th Parkrun at a different location. His first one was in Cardiff in 2008 and his furthest away was Bournemouth which involved a 4.30am start. John said: “Parkrun has taken me to some wonderful places around the UK. Places I would never otherwise have visited.” John’s favourite venues are Hull and the stunning Fountains Abbey and Sewerby. He’s run in every county with the exception of Cornwall. John has run 375 parkruns which is the equivalent of 1,875 kilometres. His fastest time is 16-27. Penistone junior Imogen Wolff achieved a remarkable time of 19-35 at the 5km Conkers Parkrun in Leicestershire. Imogen set a new course record in the girls aged 11 to 14 category.
